Napa Valley Hospice commemorated its 30th anniversary on Sunday, May 2, in the gardens of Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services (NVHADS), 414 South Jefferson Street. JoAline Olson was honored with the inaugural Spirit of Hospice Award for her profound impact on the hospice and palliative care movement through her commitment to compassionate, person-centered, end-of-life care.
"JoAline had a vision," stated Linda Gibson, President & CEO of NVHADS. "From the moment JoAline stepped into the leadership role in 1985, she recognized the intrinsic value of end of life services, and worked tirelessly to ensure that all who were in need of services, had access, regardless of their ability to pay."
Linda Gibson also honored "three Hospice Heroes," Alma Skillings, who started as a home health aide in 1979 and still is an active member of the NVHADS staff; Sarah Gorodezky, a visionary leader who headed the agency for a decade and was the recipient of the Pierre Salmon Award of Excellence (CA Hospice & Palliative Care Organization); Pam Byrne, Hospice Program Director for the last 15 years.
Napa Valley Hospice started as a program with St. Helena Hospital's Home Health in 1979. Napa Valley Hospice was incorporated as a 501 (c) (3), or a not-for-profit community benefit corporation. And in 2005, with Sarah Gorodezky's determination, NVHADS moved into their current building at 414 South Jefferson Street.
Proclamations were presented by Supervisor Bill Dodd, who spoke about his own positive experience with hospice, and Melissa Rodezno - representing Congressman Mike Thompson.
"It's an honor to be associated with an organization that touches the lives of so many, in such profound ways and has been doing so for 30 years," stated Steve Silva, NVHADS Vice Chair.
Today NVHADS is known for many services, including hospice, grief support, caregiver support, and Alzheimer's specialty care. Their mission is to build a community in which exceptional care for life-limiting conditions is accepted, expected and available to all. |
