MODERN WOODMEN INVEST IN THEIR COMMUNITY
"The first thing that you have to know about Modern Woodmen is that we don't chop wood," laughs managing partner Tim Graham. Modern Woodmen of America, located on Ward St., is a tax-exempt fraternal benefit society. It sells life insurance, annuity and investment products, not to benefit stockholders but to improve the quality of life of its stakeholders - members, their families and their communities. They accomplish this through social, charitable and volunteer activities.
The society is organized around a lodge system. Called camps, these local organizations offer fellowship and community service opportunities for members. There are more than 2,300 camps nationwide and more than 700 youth clubs, which teach children about doing good to others.
Modern Woodmen members participate in national days of service, like Make a Difference Day; camps and youth clubs participate in volunteer and social projects throughout the year. The organization's Matching Fund Program matches money raised by individual camps for community members or organizations in need.
Last year the Scarborough office gave away $7,500 in matching funds and good neighbor projects. Recently, Tim and camp secretary Laurie Paradis presented the Scarborough Fire Department with $1,000 to assist in the purchase of gear for the rescue swimmers team. Graham says that, despite the bad economy, 2009 was one of the best years in the company's 127 year history. |
