Dear Friends of Balancing Act,
Fretting about the hour you just lost to Daylight Savings Time? Not to worry.
By slowing down, you can quickly make it up! At least that's the message in an interesting new book called "The Power of Slow."
As my latest column points out, I could not have discovered the book at a better time -when I was home recovering (slowly) from foot surgery.
Going slow can be a fast track to healthy time management, especially when it's paired with a new perception of how much time you have and the ability to laugh at your own overbooking,
As my grandma used to say, "Take it easy by easy." She was way ahead of her time. Pat |

A Whack In the Head to Multitasking
My favorite scene from Bambi is the little rabbit Thumper showing how easy it is to skate on the ice. Grinning and swaying, he outdoes the wobbly fawn. "Watch what I can do!" he shouts.
There'a little bit of Thumper in many of us. See how easy it is for me! See how much I can do! See how many things I can do at once!
Well, it seems that a lot of us are skating on thin ice. According to this new book on managing time, multitasking is counterproductive, and our oversupply of digital gizmos is actually slowing us down.
A few tips from the book to slow down the Thumper in us:
- Schedule time just to hang out.
- Wear flip flops. It's hard to run in them..
- Eat with a fork. Then put it on your plate between bites.
Try it. You'll like it. |
It's all in how you look at time....
When you wound the clock forward, where did your head go?
Oh, no! I'm losing an hour? or
Yay! We're gaining an hour of daylight?
The way we perceive daylight savings time can tell a lot about the way we perceive time in general. In our minds, time can be abundant, or it can be scarce.
One of the most useful ways I've found to get to the abundant view came
years ago from life coach and author Debbie Phillips. It's this mantra, prescribed for those days when our guts our saying, "There's not enough time in the day."
Instead, try "I have all the time I need to do all I have to do." Over and over. Meditatively. It works.

If all else fails, try laughing.
Sometimes, we're so busy trying to get it all done that we take ourselves too seriously.
Overload + Smile Shortage = Instant Meltdown.
If you're in meltdown mode, take a Dog break
and discover you're not alone. My book is available now through Mothers Day on my website with free priority shipping.

Leash Law No. 15: Take Time to Laugh
Studies show that mirthful laughter, a good, old-fashioned belly laugh, can do wonders for us physically and emotionally. Join a laughter club or become a certified laughter leader (CLL) yourself so you can help others to laugh their way happy and healthy. To find a laughter club near you, or find out how to become a CLL, go to the World Laughter Tour website.
