What's in a Name? Let's Reframe!
Dear Friends of Balancing Act,
Age of Miracles Book Cover
What better way to get in a happy mood than attending three days of Advanced Certified Laughter Leader training with the World Laughter Tour?

Besides lots of laughs, I came away with a few gems to pass on to you:

Reframe. If you struggle with doing something like regular exercise, try reframing it. For example, if you can't say "Exercise Rocks!" say "Movement Rocks!"   Other reframing possibilities:  paying bills (timeliness rocks!); doing laundry (cleanliness rocks!); carpooling (eavesdropping rocks!)

Brush Backwards. Try brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand.  Could make you more creative!

Move around. Don't try to do your creative thinking in the same physical space as you do your linear thinking.

Hope the holidays are treating you well.  And if not, find an aspect you like and reframe. Gingerbread rocks??

With money and time in short supply, you might turn to the mighty pen for a no-cost memorable gift.  Preparing for a "Gift of Writing" workshop I'm conducting this Saturday, I bumped into some amazing ideas for custom-made hand-written gifts that don't require the skills of a great American novelist. To mention a few:

Book your memories.  Take random memories of your times with the recipient and write them up in a small blank journal.
Make lists of qualities you admire about the recipient or buzz words that will bring times together back to mind.
Write a short poem and frame it or, if you're no poet, find a poem especially suitable for the recipient and frame that.
Make a recipe book.  Compile a family recipe book, coupled with anecdotes that go with each one.
Write an old-fashioned letter. Who gets these anymore?  Write one by hand, conveying holiday greetings and a few memories.  Chances are, it will be the most cherished gift of the season.
More Fun To Take The Stairs??

Brain Rules with CD
We all know it's healthier to take the stairs than the escalator. But who does it? It turns out that a lot more people take the stairs when it's fun.

Click here to find out how the stairs became a lot more fun in a Stockholm subway station, where the staircase was made to look like giant piano keys that actually play.  It's a testimony to how fun can change our behavior for the better.
Leash Law No. 12: Simplifying The HolidaysAge of Miracles Book Cover

If you love the proverbial hustle and bustle but feel exhausted by New Year's Day, try limiting the frantic activities to only one of your frenetic favorites each year. You might limit yourself to one daylong shopping spree at the mall at the height of the season or one full day of cookie baking until your feet ache. But simplify the other activities. During the shopping spree year, you might purchase home-baked goods from a friend who's looking to make extra money. During a baking year, you might do your shopping online. That way, your life will be more in balance.
