                             The Gift of Words

In the midst of this holiday season many families are struggling with the insecurity of the economy. The state of Michigan has been especially hard hit. With all the financial challenges looming as we head into the New Year, we need to be more creative with our giving this year.

Let's consider the "Gift of Words".
In the book written by Gary Chapman, called, "The Five Love Languages", one of the love languages is "Words of Affirmation". Words... they don't cost a thing, but when given in a positive way, they are priceless. The largest percentage of our general population, 35% is the "S" style. (Let alone the even higher percentage of the "S" style blends, I/S, C/S.) Remember, their needs are: Appreciation, Security and Affirmation.

In my D/I style, I had found it difficult to use "words of affirmation". I guess I just expected folks to do what they were supposed to do! One of the blind spots for the "D" style is believing that encouragement leads to complacency. Needless to say, positive, encouraging words did not flow too freely from these lips. I have learned through the years that people really do respond to "words of affirmation".

Something to consider for your staff, students and family is giving the "gift of words". Think of a co-worker you admire and respect. Write them a note on nice paper or in their Christmas card telling them what you admire and respect about them. Each of your students, even the ones that challenge you, need to hear positive encouraging words. Consider writing each of them a note or mail a Holiday postcard home thanking them and sharing what you appreciate about them. Better yet, have each of your students write the nicest thing they can think about each student in the class. Compile the comments and give them back to each student. Some of these kids, if not all, will keep these notes forever!

How about our families? Sometimes they are the folks we take for granted the most. Remind your spouse why you fell in love with them and what you value about your relationship today. Tell your kids how much you love them and the joy they bring to your life. Even though life can be stressful sharing words of affirmation can not only encourage a more positive relationship but also heal a strained or broken relationship as well.

You may never know what is emotionally going on inside of those we see every day, but at this time of giving, give the priceless gift of words.

Have a blessed holiday season!
