Doug waving
'For all that shall be, yes'
Members of the parish and the wider community came together Sunday evening to celebrate Fr. Doug Hahn's thirteen years as rector of St. Thomas. A Festive Choral Evensong was led by the choir and Rick McKnight at the organ; the Rev. Timothy Graham from Trinity miter cake Church as officiant; and the Rev. Bill Combs, a former associate at St. Thomas, as preacher. A festive reception included purple and lilac flowers as centerpieces and a cake topped by a miter made of icing. Many thanks to Ann Johnston and her crew for making the reception so wonderful! Among the gifts to the Hahns: a drawing from the choir by the Rev. Bill McLemore, formerly of St. Stephen's in Smiths Station, Ala.; a framed photo from the CVEM staff and board; and a framed photo of the nave from the Vestry. Additional gifts for Fr. Hahn's attire as bishop are forthcoming.
In both morning services, Fr. Hahn preached his last sermon as rector. He also celebrated the Eucharist. In his sermon, Hahn quoted the late Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld: "For all that has been - Thanks. For all that shall be - Yes.
We wish Godspeed to Doug and Kaye, and our prayers continue for their new ministry in the Diocese of Lexington.

generosity
 Stewardship 2013
"Stewardship 2013: A Celebration of Generosity"
will include Cottage Meetings, articles from Vestry members explaining the needs and hopes of the different
areas of our lives together, our prayers for a successful campaign, and our expressions of gratitude for all the blessing we enjoy. Please begin to consider how you can be a generous and grateful part of the life of this Church
we love.
The cottage meetings will be in various parishioners' homes. They're the evenings of October 1, 2, 4, 8, 9 and 11.
You will receive information about attending a meeting, but in the meantime make attending one of these a priority.  This will be an opportunity to visit with fellow parishioners over coffee and dessert, hear information about our parish's financial life, and hear about this ministry of generosity. Stewardship cards and materials will be distributed so you may take them home and return them at a later date.

Refugees
Book club session to focus on refugees
The St. Thomas Readers Book Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at the CVEM House, 1120 Lockwood Ave., off Wynnton Road. The book is "Outcasts United: An American Town, A Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference" by Warren St. John. This true (and very readable) account of a soccer team in Clarkston, Ga., focuses on the teenage refugees who made up the team and the young woman who coached them. St. Thomas' own Lisa Venable and Greg Herring were involved with refugee families in the Atlanta area at the time this story was being written. We have extended an invitation to them to share their memories of those years.

Vicky Partin, CVEM Missioner, has graciously agreed to host this meeting and will also speak to her recollections of working with refugees who came to Columbus. Everyone is welcome for what promises to be a lively and enlightening discussion. Contact Sonya Boyd at 706-563-6161 or janulau@aol.com if you have questions.

"Outcasts United" is available for purchase at local bookstores, online, and in an ebook format on Nook and Kindle. The Columbus Public Library also has copies.
