Dear St. Thomas friends,

Please enjoy this issue of our E-NEWSLETTER! Please check your e-mail each week to read our news and events. To read more information, you can now find us on Facebook!

Dougandkaye
A way to honor the Hahns
On the evening of Sept. 16, St. Thomas will host a Festive Choral Evensong to honor the ministry of the Very Rev. Dr. Doug Hahn and Kaye Hahn. This will be their last service at St. Thomas. The Rev. Bill Combs, a former associate priest at St. Thomas, will preach. The Rev. Tim Graham, the new rector at Trinity Episcopal in Columbus, will celebrate. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Please click here to view the invitation. St. Thomas members are asked to bring their favorite hors d'oeuvres on a pretty serving dish. Prep work will be needed the afternoon of the event. Call Ann Johnston at 706-442-2233 if you can help. All are welcome!

A request from Rick McKnight: I would like to have a full choir loft for Evensong to send Doug and Kaye on their way. If you have sung with the choir before, have never sung with us but read music and have a pleasant voice, join us. The next rehearsal is 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, and dress rehearsal is 3:30 p.m. Sept. 16. If you have any questions, call Rick at 706-575-8900.

Meanwhile, the Adult Sunday School this week will feature Fr. Hahn "reflecting on our mutual ministry at St. Thomas."

P.S. It is also requested that any items borrowed from the church kitchen be returned by the 16th. A few things are missing.

dinner party   Step into Foyers
New Foyers groups are forming this month. Foyers groups are groupings of parishioners who meet regularly for dinner, usually in each others' homes, but sometimes restaurants or wherever they wish. It's another way for us to get to know one another better. Click here to read more, including how to sign up.

Stewardship plans underway
The Stewardship Committee will have an orientation luncheon for all hosts and emcees of the Stewartship Campaignhands open this Sunday, following the 10:30 service. Our stewardship cottage meetings will be held in various parishioners' homes on the evenings of October 1, 2, 4, 8, 9 and 11. You will receive information about attending a meeting, but in the meantime make attending one of these a priority.  This will be an opportunity to visit with fellow parishioners over coffee and dessert, hear information about our parish's financial life, and hear about this ministry of generosity. Stewardship cards and materials will be distributed so you may take them home and return them at a later date.
-- Fr. Hahn

Speaking of stewardship:

Dear Friends,

As part of our stewardship materials, we want to produce a written piece called "Gratitude - A Celebration of Generosity" - using the words of many St. Thomas folks.  This will include brief words, signed or anonymous, about why you give to St. Thomas, or what you are grateful for at St. Thomas.

  • You may give for reasons unrelated to St. Thomas:  "because God has been good to me."  "because the Bible tells me so."  "because it connects me to God's wider world." Etc.
  • You can be grateful for anything - the beauty of the grounds, the fellowship around the tables, elements of worship, anything.

We encourage you to help.

Complete one of these two sentences, or write something in your own words:

  •  I give to St. Thomas because ____________
  •  I give to St. Thomas because I am grateful for ___________

You may sign this or make it anonymous.  Don't be shy.  Remember there is great power in testimony.

Take a moment and respond to this email.  We would like your replies by Sept. 12

God's Peace,

The Stewardship Committee
Time to jam: Columbus Jazz Societyjazz
The Columbus Jazz Society continues its great evening of jazz: a free concert from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday. We are happy to have our new home at St. Thomas. All Saints Hall provides the best listening experience for jazz music. The CJS will be sponsoring The Maneuver Center of Excellence Jazz Band under the direction of SFC William Baez.
This is a free concert open to all who wish to get an idea of what jazz music is all about. The concert Sunday will be held outside on the St. Thomas property, providing the weather is nice. "Barbeque & Beer" concessions will be available by Country's Barbeque. Bring the whole family, lawn chairs, picnic foods, and relax to the great sounds of jazz!
The Columbus Jazz Society holds a concert and jam session the second Sunday of every month from 6-9 p.m. at St. Thomas.

Seeking youth director
St. Thomas is looking for a part-time youth director. We will be interviewing in the next few weeks, so if you know of someone who would be a good fit for this, please send information to the St. Thomas office and they will pass this information to the appropriate committee.  Interested persons may also contact the parish office for a job description. Call 706-324-4264.

phone New phone set-up
As some of you may have noticed, the phone systems at St. Thomas have been updated. When you call, you will be greeted by a message. To get through to the office, just press 2 and we'll answer! This change was implemented to reduce the volume of calls coming through intended for the Wynnton Neighborhood Network, and allows us in the office to use our time to better serve the parish. Thank you for understanding.

Refugees
Book club session to focus on refugees
The St. Thomas Readers Book Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the CVEM House, 1120 Lockwood Ave., off Wynnton Road. The book is "Outcasts United: An American Town, A Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference" by Warren St. John. This true (and very readable) account of a soccer team in Clarkston, Ga., focuses on the teenage refugees who made up the team and the young woman who coached them. St. Thomas' own Lisa Venable and Greg Herring were involved with refugee families in the Atlanta area at the time this story was being written. We have extended an invitation to them to share their memories of those years.

Vicky Partin, CVEM Missioner, has graciously agreed to host this meeting and will also speak to her recollections of working with refugees who came to Columbus. Everyone is welcome for what promises to be a lively and enlightening discussion. Contact Sonya Boyd at 706-563-6161 or janulau@aol.com if you have questions.

"Outcasts United" is available for purchase at local bookstores, online, and in an ebook format on Nook and Kindle. The Columbus Public Library also has copies.
