Teen wins national award

Maura Reilly-Ulmanek, 17, of Kentucky tends to her neighbor's garden. Inspired by that activity, she wrote a poem, "Esther's Garden," and was quite surprised later to learn she won a Gold Medal in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Here is Maura's work:

esther's garden
i wish you could have seen
mother teresa holding hands
with Him for the first time
their soft fingertips
tasting of lavender
and lemongrass
i've tried to tell father daniel
that esther's rain-glazed benches
are as good as any pews
and i'd like to feel moss and
soil under my knees
when i stoop to pray
you'd think she's trying
to teach all things to speak
in latin greek and love
can't the black-eyed susans
say amen?
let the junebugs
baptize us with rain water
we'll whisper our confessions
to the steady koi
the cicadas hum
the sweetest sermons
you'll ever hear
listen they'll coax
the hallelujah
from your lips
i don't know much about the bible
but you can't tell me
that He hasn't written His will
in spiderwebs and slug trails
that we weren't each born
with a little eden in our bones
teaching us to dance
to the holy murmur
of what is here

Speaking of Lexington ...

Our rector, Fr. Doug Hahn, and his wife, Kaye, have been  in the Diocese of Lexington since last weekend. Since Monday, Fr. Doug and five other candidates for bishop have participated in a "walkabout," touring the diocese and getting to know the people there. The walkabout ends Saturday, with the  election Aug. 18 in Lexington. Please keep Doug and Kaye, as well as the Diocese of Lexington, in your prayers.

Episcokids Updates
The Episcokids have had a busy week. We had 18 join us to watch Ice Age at Hollywood Connection and many showed up for a Pool Party at Ms. Janet Mapel's house. Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting adventures! VBS Fun

We look forward to a new school year beginning on Wednesday, August 15. Children's Choir is at a new time. It will start at 5:30. At 6:00 we will all gather for a family dinner in the Parish pool party Hall and have Episcokid Formation class at 6:30. The class is an Episcopal communion instruction for children  called "This Bread and This Cup." For those children with parents still involved in adult education programming, we will have childcare and activities.

I am accepting school supply donations to help defray the cost of materials. Items most needed are glue bottles, glue sticks, markers and Fiskar scissors.

Blessings! Erin Redden, Children's Ministry director
NetsforLife
Nets for Life raises $2,416!
A big thank you to the people of St. Thomas who raised $2,416 for Nets for Life. This amounts to 200 nets, which will help protect about 600 children around the globe, in places where mosquitoes are more than a menace but a life-threatening reality. At $12 apiece, your gift has gone a long way toward saving lives.
See this page for more about the program, sponsored by Episcopal Relief and Development. (Photo by ERD)
