Breakfast, commissioning honored Finley
Last Sunday, the parish enjoyed a special breakfast and commissioning to honor long-time St. Thomas member Finley Williamson. A wooden chest (above) was commissioned by Friends of Finley and sits in the office area. The woodworker was Buena Vista resident Rick Garner. Finley has long kept St. Thomas' woodwork repaired and updated. Finley and his wife Heidi were joined in the celebration by their son and his family. More than 40 persons donated to make this artwork possible. In his brief remarks Sunday, Finley said: "This is really kind of embarrassing but I have heartfelt appreciation for everyone who donated."

Service June 24 at Zion Church
Talbotton, Ga.--Fr. Jeff Jackson and the parish of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, Hamilton, and the Chattahoochee Valley Episcopal Convocation invite you to join them at fpr worship at 4 p.m. June 24 at Zion Church. Fr. Jeff will celebrate, and Fr. Hahn will preach.
Fellowship and light refreshments will follow. Zion, built in the 1840s, is the oldest Episcopal Church owned by the Diocese of Atlanta. The building has been spared modernization and is a perfect replica of a typical English rural parish church of the Tudor-Gothic period. The altar, communion rail, lectern-pulpit, and prayer desk are handmade of native walnut. The entire structure was constructed with wooden pegs and handmade iron nails. The pipe organ, a Pilcher, was installed in 1850 and has been in continuous use since that time. Zion Church is located at 100 Main Street in Talbotton. |

Where in the world is St. Thomas Parish?
As you travel this summer, many of you will worship in other places. It is a joy to see the diversity of our wonderful Church. Drop us an email about any church you visit between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and we will start an ongoing list of links to the places we have encountered God.
Recent visits: The choir visited St. John the Divine, where they sang on May 26.
The St. Thomas clergy, along with three lay electors, worshipped June 2 at the Cathedral of St. Philip before the election of our 10th bishop. And, a teen from our parish visited Camp Mikell recently. And, where in the world are the Episcokids?
We are encouraging all our our families to post pictures of their kids on vacation this summer on the St. Thomas Episcokids and Friends group page on Facebook. If you are not sure how to do this and you agree to having your child's picture posted, please email the picture to episcokids@stthomascolumbus.org and Ms. Erin will do it for you.

The Traughs make 70! Dick and Shirley Traugh, charter members of St. Thomas, are about to celebrate their 70th anniversary. On June 20, 1942, Dick and Shirley exchanged vows in Berwick, Pa. They were married 11 years before their daughter Molly came along. She is Molly Sams and lives in Titusville, Fla. The Traughs have one grandson, Scott Weaver, and a great-granddaugher, Carley Weaver. What makes a marriage last? "Never hold a grudge," Dick advised. "We always make up before we go to bed." A special breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday will be in their honor. |
Trading GracesDo you have a book, magazine, movie or piece of music that has touched you with God's spirit? Pass it along. Until the beginning of Vacation Bible School, we will place a table in the narthex. Leave a book, DVD, or CD that has moved your spirit. Take one that has moved your neighbor. Let us keep up with one another as we trade graces.

Vacation Bible School and Nets for Life
Photo Courtesy of Episcopal Relief and Development
Dear St. Thomas Friends,
The mosquitoes are especially bad this year - what a nuisance. But they are not the danger to us that they are to many of our brothers and sisters around the world, vulnerable to threat of mosquito-borne malaria. This disease kills one million people each year; most of these are children under 5. Every 45 seconds a child dies of this disease. You may remember the powerful story that Rev. Moses Matonya told us about the death of his first child by malaria.
This is sad news.
But there is good news. We can help. Most cases of malaria can be prevented by the use of mosquito sleeping nets. These are inexpensive to us, but very rare and costly to people in the developing world. This is where "Nets for Life" comes in.
"Nets for Life", in partnership with Episcopal Relief and Development, is raising funds to purchase mosquito nets. Our Vacation Bible School has adopted Nets for Life as their outreach project, and in this wonderful way our children are reaching out to children across the world.
We are inviting you to participate. A contribution of $12 provides one net; any contribution of any amount will be appreciated. Checks made payable to the church should be marked for nets. You may also donate through the Web site.
Support "Nets for Life" between now and the end of June. And each time a mosquito buzzes you, pray for those children you are helping live a longer and malaria free life and give thanks for the generosity of our Vacation Bible School Children.
Christ's Peace,
Fr. Doug
