Bishop Whitmore to Visit St. Thomas on October 9

St. Thomas Choir to Perform the U.S. Premiere of "Vox Christi", an Original Composition by Prof. Philip Wilby

This Sunday, October 9, the St. Thomas Choir will perform the U.S. premiere of the original composition "Vox Christi", by Prof. Philip Wilby.

Professor WilbyIn 2009, when the St. Thomas Choir was in England singing at Wells and Gloucester Cathedrals, we asked the composer Philip Wilby to come from his home in Bristol (where his wife is the Canon Precentor) to offer a Master Class for the Choir, and to conduct the Choir at Evensong. We had a reception afterwards and we all hit it off! Prof. Wilby (pictured) is known foremost as a composer of music for wind bands, and as a Professor of composition at Leeds University. He has been wildly successful at choral music.

We all had a splendid time enjoying this unique experience, and later Prof. Wilby suggested that he would like to write an original piece for the Choir. The result was "A Prayer for St. Thomas" - a setting of the collect for the day - which we sang on St. Thomas Day in 2010. This has been recorded and just released on the Regent label featuring the Exon singers. It was recorded in Wells Cathedral, and has been very favorably reviewed in the London Times.

"Vox Christi", the piece which you will hear on Sunday, October 9, is in stark contrast to the gentleness of the "Prayer." Prof. Wilby sets the Great Commandment in a way that makes the text come to life in dramatic fashion. In fact, when we were discussing this commission, I mentioned that hopefully we would soon complete our organ renovation with a chancel division. You will hear a couple of measures near the end in which he incorporates a tuba stop from the front organ. "Vox Christi" has been published by the Royal School of Church Music, and is already in its second printing in England, and has been sung on BBC Radio 4 broadcast of Choral Evensong. To listen to the mp3 of "Vox Christi", click here, then scroll down slightly.

We are honored to help in the creation of music in the service of the Church. We rejoice in our collaboration with Prof. Wilby and praise the Lord for his talent.

The St. Thomas Readers Book Discussion Group will meet in the Parlor on Tuesday, November 1, at 5:30 pm. The book we are discussing is The Invisible Wall by Harry Bernstein, a memoir of his childhood in a Manchester, England, neighborhood where Jews lived on one side of the street, Gentiles on the other. This remarkable book was written when the author was ninety six years old---and he wrote three more books after that! The Invisible Wall is available in paperback, and there are copies in the public library system, including a large-print copy at North Columbus Branch Library. All are welcome to attend the discussion. For more information, please contact Sonya Boyd at 706-563-6161 or janjulau@aol.com.
