St. Thomas Choir to Perform Special Music and Lyrics to Support the Three-Week Welcome Back Kick-Off!
A biography of Ray Capo, Lyricist:
I have been a member of St. Thomas for approximately 12 years. During this time I have taught a children's Sunday School class for six years, along with leading children's chapel for one of those years.
I am married to Mary. I have a step daughter, Morgan Hays, and we have two boys, Nick and Tom (pictured).
I am currently beginning my 18th year of teaching in Muscogee County, currently teaching 7th grade math at East Columbus Magnet Academy.
I have always held a passion for traditional Christian hymns. For years, my favorite was O God, our help in ages past (music St. Anne). About three years ago, following a Sunday service, I began to put poetry words on paper to the syllabic form found in the St. Anne music. The writing topic was the cross of Christ and was originally three or four verses in length. A person with whom I shared this suggested I add more verses, to lend the writing for use during the stations of the cross. This piece, Before the cross of Christ I bow, has been used by the St. Thomas choir for two years during holy week.
Given the positive responses from fellow parishioners, I have since written several more pieces, some of which have been used during services here at our parish. Some of these include Praise to Thee, O Trinity; All glory, laud, and praise ascribe; Hail to the Word, Divine; and the latest, used during this three week series on prayer, Teach us to pray, dear Christ, our Lord. I have written these poems to traditional hymnal music, which are older and in the public domain.
I appreciate the kind responses I have received in the past regarding these songs. I also appreciate Rick McKnight, Organist and Choirmaster, for his advice and kind words during this process. I hope that the words I share through these hymns minister to you greatly, as they do for me, during my meditations.
Submitted by Ray Capo.
In addition, Roger Redden will add his trumpet artistry to this Sunday's Choir performance. This is also the final Summer Choir Sunday. Come to the Choir Room at 9:30 and be surrounded by the St. Thomas Choir on their first Sunday back.
Submitted by Rick McKnight.

St. Thomas Readers Book Discussion Group

The St. Thomas Readers Book Group will begin its seventh season on Thursday, September 8, at 6:00 p.m. in the St. Thomas Parlor. We will be discussing Dancing in Cadillac Light and Part of Me, both by Kimberly Willis Holt. Considered an outstanding author of books for children and young adults, her works are often found on school reading lists. Both of these books celebrate the joys of family, reading, faith, and the triumph of the human spirit. They are not available at the Columbus Public Library, but they may be purchased online and in local book stores. The convener of the group also has several copies that she purchased from Amazon.com. Anyone wishing to purchase one of these copies may contact Sonya Boyd at 706-563-6161 or janjulau@aol.com. The funds will be donated to the St. Thomas Youth.
There will be no meeting of the Readers Group in October so that everyone may participate in the Columbus Public Library's The Big Read, celebrating the works of Edgar Allen Poe. A variety of activities are planned for the month and we hope that all will support The Big Read. Contact the Chattahoochee Valley Regional Library for further information on The Big Read.
Announcements about the November meeting of the St. Thomas Readers will be forthcoming.

To help his transition and to test the completeness of his recovery, James will begin with light work only, before resuming his former workload in full.
We have appreciated the patience and cooperation of St. Thomas parishioners during these past four months. We thank you for your continued support during James's transition back to work.
