| Presidents Report | Hello,
Happy May to everyone! Well lots of great things have been happening at the Club. In April we brought you some fantastic entertainment and intend to keep on stepping up our game in that regard. Some of the key highlights for April include holding a very successful Member Appreciation Evening, initiating a patron-centred contest titled "Dash for Cash" (sponsored by Movie Experts in Bowmanville) and paying out a total of $1500 over 15 weeks, kicking off Karaoke Sundays, and initiating a Youth Talent Competition. Please stay tuned for some very exciting events in May!
As many of you know, the theme for 2012 Pride (Durham) is "Putting the Unity in Community". What a powerful theme indeed but we must, as a community, breathe life into that theme. The recent silent "NO H8" Rally held in Oshawa BEHAVIORALLY demonstrates our ability to come together as a community not only for a shared cause but also on very short notice. I would invite each of you to ask yourselves what YOU are personally doing to promote unity and love within your very own community. Afterall it is one thing to come together against an outside influence and quite another to come together FOR one another. The truth is that love is indeed louder than hate and each one of us has a valuable role to play...in how we treat one another, how we speak to and of one another and how we support one another. At the end of the day, it is about making deliberate choices. Let us come together and be the change we wish to see in our community!
I do hope that this message sees each of you happy, healthy and feeling blessed.
Warm Regards, Karen Hillier President@club717.ca |

Have you heard about the sweet store with a big heart? After starting her company in April 2010 as a home based company Christine Barnes, Founder of The Candy Cause has opened a headquarters in Oshawa Ontario which serves as a retail location for its customers.
In the store you will find: retro candy, a popcorn section offering 70+ varieties of popcorn, popping kernels in white, red, blue and yellow, 16 flavours of popcorn seasonings, and the original North American made Jacob Bromwell outdoor over the fire popcorn maker. The bulk candy section carries licorice balls, salt water taffy, licorice babies, sour keys, pixie sticks, good and plenty and so much more! There is retro candy, British candy, 12 flavours of cotton candy made fresh at the store chocolate and so much more!
The store also serves as a small cafe. Stop by for a visit and enjoy a lunch for only $4.99 including a drink, perhaps you are thirsty for some retro Pop Shoppe pop or a Mr. Freeze Slush. When was the last time you had a funnel cake? The Candy Cause serves them either dusted with icing sugar or fully loaded with ice cream, strawberries and sauce.
In one short year The Candy Cause has been present at many local events such as: Whitby's Harbour Day's, Whitby's Canada Day Celebration, Whitby's Heritage Days, Port Perry's Fall Festival and Oshawa's Auto Fest, Oshawa's Spring Home & Garden Show, Kingsway College Christmas Show, Port Perry's Spring Home & Garden Show to name a few.
Christine and her husband Chris adopted their daughter through Durham Children's Aid Foundation. This year with a portion of proceeds from their popcorn sales in the store and at events they will donate money back to this organization and give the gift of excitement this Christmas to children less fortunate. The Candy Cause is also a proud supporter of: The Salvation Army, United Way, The Lions Club, Big Brother's, Wyatt's Warriors, and this year they will take proceeds from their popcorn sales and donate them back to this organization to give the gift of excitement to children affiliated with this organization. The Candy Cause is also a proud supporter of: The Salvation Army, The Lions Club, United Way, Big Brother's, Wyatt's Warriors, Durham's Walk for Lupus and Pride Durham.
Ask how The Candy Cause can help with your next event. They can work with small venues to large corporate venues. Having worked with The Source By Circuit City and Volkswagen Canada they are sure that your next event can have a wow factor to it also!
One day at a time everyone can make the difference in someone's life!

Hello Everyone!
Thanks!
Kelly,
Vicepresident@club717.ca
I can't believe it's already May 1st, seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the New Year!
I'm so excited for the next couple months, we've got some amazing shows lined up for May, and then we have Durham Pride in June.
If you're not going camping on the long weekend, please try and make it out to the club on Friday May 18th, for Tim's Birthday show!!! Tim Beaven has been around the club a long time, and if you have the pleasure of knowing him, you know that he deserves a party like no other!!! In case you missed the decorating that he did for New Years, and the Member Appreciation night, all I can say is TLC or SLICE needs to get this man a decorating show ASAP!
Special guests for the Birthday Show fit for a Queen are Tyler Uptight and Cameron!!!! We've got a few surprises up our sleeve for that night as well.....Tim prepare yourself!!
Last Saturday was the first day of our Youth Talent Competition with Pride Durham, and we had an amazing turn out of 8 contestants. You would be amazed at the talent of the youth involved, and being a judge is one difficult task.
The contest is run every Saturday (excluding the long weekend) from 430-730pm until June 2nd, with the finals being held June 4th. We've got a lot of special guest judges lined up, and this past Saturday I had the pleasure of judging along side Councillor Amy England, David Moorhouse of Pride Durham, and Chase Wood (aka Maximum Wood, winner of Club 717's new talent contest last year) So if you've got some spare time on a Saturday afternoon, come out and cheer on our LGBTQ youth!
That's all for me, I hope to see everyone out at the club!!!
Thank you,
Kelly

| Treasurers Report - by John |
Hi All
I hope everyone is enjoying our great line-up of talent at the Club.
April was a very successful month financially, and that is in part due to the efforts of the Board to enhance the entertainment, but more importantly due to the number of you that turned out to support the Club.
Our first Jubilee Event went over really well. Thanks to Richard and Gord for setting up such a spendid array of wines and offering many samples to the patrons. Our sponsors that were there had an equally thrilling experience and have told us to include them in our future Jubilee plans. This is just another example of the Community coming together to support our 25th year as a Not for Profit Entity.
Please check out the posters on the web, the weekly eblasts, and this Newsletter to keep up to date on the many events in May. Some of these events have never been held at the Club, and prove to be exciting for the Community to be a part of. As I said last month, if the Club does well, then the Community is doing well. We are here for each other.
I have our book keeper doing a few tallies on things that the Club has participated in over our 25 years. Hopefully this will be ready for our next Jubilee event.
Our membership is also up significantly over last year at this time. After the pro rated memberships start in June, this should really put us over last year. Patrons are seeing the added values of membership, and taking advantage of it.
Our "Dash for Cash" has really caught on. After being on the door for the last few Fridays, it's amazing that people actually have all their tickets on them when they come in, and are ready to get the latest one.
We can only hope that we all band together to keep "Unity in the Community" and enjoy our times together at the Club. Just take a few minutes to think about all the friendships that have started at the Club, and are still going strong.
Have a great May!!!!
John Duvall

Topic:
We Must Continue to Educate and WIN against HIV
As many of you know....I volunteer with The AIDS Committee of Durham in a fundraising role. I have been doing so for over 2 years now. I recently attended a workshop which had various speakers talking about current treatments for individuals with HIV, current statistics, prevention and education. The workshop/conference was excellent. I thought I was educated about STI's, HIV and AIDS - this conference woke me up to my ignorance and really emphasized how important it is for us to continue to fight against HIV and AIDS.
STATISTICS - AT A GLANCE (Updated November 2011)
- At the end of 2010, an estimated 34 million people (31.6 million - 35.2 million) were livinig with HIV worldwide, up 17% from 2001. - 2.7 million (2.4 million - 2.9 million) new HIV infections in 2010 - approximately 65,000 people are living with HIV and AIDS in Canada. Of those, 30% are unaware they are infected with HIV.
WORLDWIDE
- Of the 2.7 million new infections in 2010, an estimated 390,000 (340,000- 450,000) are among children. - AIDS related deaths are decreasing the number fell to 1.8 million (1.6 million - 1.9 million) in 2010, down from a peak of 2.2 million (2.1million - 2.5 million) in the mid-2000's
CANADA (Updated December 2010)
- The number of people living with HIV (including AIDS) in Canada continues to rise, from an estimated 57,000 in 2005 to approximately 65,000 by the end of 2009 (a 14% increase). - Althought estimates of the number of new HIV infections are quite uncertain, it appears that the number of new infections in 2009 (estimated range between 2,300 and 4,300) was about the same as or slightly greater than the estimated range in 2005 (2,200 to 4,200).
MOST RECENT TRENDS
- Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) continued to comprise the greatest proportion (44%) of new HIV infections in 2009. - In 2008, persons who inject drugs (IDU) comprised 21% of new infections. - The proportions of new infections in 2009 among male and female heterosexuals who are not from countries that have high rates of HIV was 25% and male and female heterosexuals from countries with high rates of HIV (so-called 'endemic countries') comprised 5.5%. - The proportion of all new infections among women was unchanged from 2005 to 2009 (26%). - Aboriginal persons also continue to be over-represented in the HIV epidemic in Canada, and comprised 11% of all new infections in 2009.
ONTARIO (Updated August 2010)

Accronyms
STI's - Sexually Transmitted Infections HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus AIDS - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
There is still much to be done to help spread HIV and other STI's and educating yourself, your children, friends and family is one a very important aspect. The most important is to practice safe sex. Don't be afraid to talk about this issue - Personally, I find it respectful if you can have an open discussion about all the good and bad aspects of sex with all the people you care for. Many people believe that they are immune to HIV because they are young, heterosexual, women and still beleive that this is a 'gay men's disease' - The statistics prove this to be a misguided notion.
Remember to have empathy for those that have HIV and/or AIDS - you don't know the circumstances in how they were infected and if you did, there should be no judgement against them. HIV/AIDS is no joking matter.
If you have sex - protect yourself, especially if you are having sex with more than 1 partner. Know the facts, arm yourself, respect your sexual partners and most of all, respect yourself!

| Cleaning Corner - by the Queen of Clean | |

Oh Spring is here and the one famous thing that we should all take the time to do is a good Spring Cleaning in our home, apartment or condo. Open the windows & patio doors and let the fresh air in! Take down the curtains & wash them and so on and so on....
The one product this month that I truly love is the SWIFFER Duster regular and 360 degree! They are amazing to get dust and cob webs from those hard to reach places. They are also great for last minute and quick dusting before company arrives. You can get them at any stores like Canadian Tire, Walmart, Home Depot, Zellers, Rona, and even at the local grocery stores. Watch the flyers as they do come on sale. Of the two of them the SWIFFER 360 degree Duster is my favorite because you can get all dust with one swift!
It is also great to pick cat hair! LOL!

Chardonnay
