| Greetings! |
"This Month's Jubilee Event" Wine & Cheese April 21st
We'll it's here, the first of several events that our Jubilee Committee has come up with. This first event is hosted by Richard Twigg (aka Twiggy) who as we all know, is an expert at throwing parties and hosting events. This event will have a full "Wine & Cheese Buffet" with some surprises tossed in. Special Decorations. Richard has sourced out and purchased some special Wine and Cheese for the night. The bar will be open from 7pm - 9pm for this event followed by an Amazing Show by Michelle Ross & Ivy later. Coming to the Wine and Cheese Event will give you early access to the bar before normal opening hours. Once regular bar hours hit, there will be a terrific show by Michelle Ross and Ivy later in the evening. This show is in support of Pride Durham and will be a fundraiser to help cover the cost of the upcoming Pride Parade Week and Music Festival. The Club, your local not-for-profit LGBTQ bar, really has hit a huge milestone. Not every business makes it this far. If it were not for the hard work that Club 717 and it's founders did over the past 25 years, our community would not be the same today. Just think how much money Club 717 helped raise and donated over the last 25 years. That's no small amount by any stretch of the imagination. Growth, Change and Support takes money. If your a part of one of these organizations that has received some of the donations or support. Consider coming to some of the Jubilee Events this year to show your thanks and support, although the Club has not been one to pat themselves on the back for all they have done. Turning 25 is a big deal for any business. That being an LGBTQ business puts even more pressure on and makes it that much more of a success !! Now for some exciting news !! NEW CONTEST: Sponsored by our friends at Movie Experts Bowmanville - They are also celebrating 25 years in business !! | Presidents Report | Hello,
Spring has sprung and the grass has ris'...guess who your new President is?! Lol, for those of you who have not yet heard, I became President of Club 717's Board of Directors on March 18, 2012. Danny Caudle, President until that date, chose to step down from his position and the Board of Directors in general. Be assured however that Danny continues to be an avid supporter of both the club and its Board and will continue to have a presence at the club. I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Danny for all of the work he has done and continues to do. Congratulations to Kelly Hummell who is now the Vice President ,in addition to her role as staffing director. She is a strong and talented woman and I look forward to working closely with her over the coming months! We are confident that we can continue to carry out our vision for Club 717 and set the stage for another 25 years of service to our members and the community in general. As always we welcome feedback from our members (and from others as well) and will continue to strive to build our membership and make Club 717 "the place to be". While membership does indeed have its privileges, it is important to clarify what being a member at Club 717 means. First, it means you have a vote at our AGM and a say in who sits on the Board of Directors. Second, it means you can attend any and all events at the Club without ever having to pay a cover charge. However, membership does not mean ownership. That is to say, while we do value your input and feedback it is the Board of Directors that YOU elect that ultimately makes the decisions. We have a process in place via email or via written letter for any member to table their concerns/issues/feedback and we would ask that you kindly use that process. Not surprisingly, we are also incredibly open to hearing your POSITIVE comments/feedback as well! Happily, spring seems to have arrived early and with it comes new growth and rejuvenation. Correspondingly, we are currently doing some restructuring at the Club (entertainment, staffing etc) and know that these changes will help take us to the next level. We would really appreciate your continued support as we move forward. I do hope this message finds each of you in a healthy, happy and prosperous place. I truly look forward to what lies ahead in this, our Silver anniversary, year...and beyond!!! Warm Regards, Karen Hillier President@club717.ca |

| Community Challenge - by Jean-Guy Dugas | There are so many ways that we as members of the LGBTQ community can help other charities out.
Here are some challenges to our Club 717 patrons and members.
1) Volunteer to the AIDS Committee of Durham
2) Volunteers are needed for Pride Durham Inc.
3) Purchase 1 or 2 toys and 1 or 2 food (canned) items per month, and then when Club 717 has its Food & Toy Drive at Christmas drop it off. This way you will not feel so financially stressed out at Christmas.
4) You can also mail in or drop off your unused Canadian Tire Money to Club 717 and then we will use it only to purchase toys for the kids at our 2012 Toy Drive at Christmas.
Remember it is not how many toys or how much money you spend on the volunteer work or donations, but it is the feeling in your heart that you were able to make a contribution and a difference for someone that is in need.
Oasis Animal Rescure could use your support

There are so many ways that we as members of the LGBTQ community can help other charities out.
I had the opportunity before Christmas to walk in and visit the staff and cats at the "Oasis Animal Rescue and Education Centre" located at 86 Simcoe Street North in downtown Oshawa. They have an open door policy so that anyone can walk in and play with the cats.
This is where I met Nala and Kiara and now they are my little girls. Oh yes they are spoiled and now act like 2 diva's.

They are always looking for volunteers and take donations of cat and dog food. They also accept money donations.
If you are not certain about adopting for life then you can always do a Foster Home program with the animals till they find a family that wants to adopt the animal permanently.
Oasis Animal Rescue and Education Center

Please consider how you can make a huge difference in their tiny lives
Best regards,
Jean-Guy

| Vice-Presidents Report - by Kelly |
WOW!!! Spring most certainly has sprung!!!
As I sit here writing my first article as Vice-President of Club 717, I'm still baffled that I sit on a board elected by our members, in a position voted on by fellow board members, and think although this is a volunteer position, I am truly hounoured, humbled in fact to represent Club 717.
A big thank you to the members that thought I had what it takes to be on the board, and to my fellow board members, I have the utmost respect for all of you.
I would like everyone to acknowledge the hard work that Danny Caudle has done the last 5 months running the board, and although I support his decision to resign as President, I would like to point out that he put 110% into his reign and should be thanked for a job well done. Danny I have the utmost respect for you, you're an amazing supporter of our community, and an incredible human being.
Congratulations to Karen Hillier for taking over the roll as president, and I'm looking forward to the remainder of our term on board together. You have the intelligence and charisma of no other woman I have met before, and with your ideas for change, I think people will see that you have the Club's best interest at heart.
For the most part I'd say we have a strong board of directors, that want to work together as a team and see the club succeed for another 25 years.
Speaking of 25 years, I'm also sitting on the committee for our 25th anniversary celebrations, and without giving away all the juicy details, there will be some upcoming events that you won't want to miss.
I honestly have to say I've been coming to Club 717 for the past 10 years, and although there's been drama, new and lost friendships/relationships, this is my home away from home. I enjoy coming to the club for work or socializing and I hope to see Club 717 around for another 25 years!!
Thanks!
Kelly,

| Treasurers Report - by John |
Hi All
March was a great month at the Club. We planned many events and all were successful. Many thanks to all those who assisted in decorating, planning and bringing each event to a successful conclusion.
This is what makes the Club so special. As most of you know, we are a Not for Profit organization, so we are able to give back to many avenues in our community. In essence the Club is the Community, so if the Club does well, then so does the Community, and if the Club does poorly, then the Community is not supporting us. Just a thought to keep in your minds.
We have many exciting events planned for April and we can only hope that you come out and support our efforts.
We are also beginning our first of many 25th Anniversary events. It is a wine and cheese party on Saturday April 21st from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. The bar will also be open for other drinks. Please plan to help the 25th Anniversary Committee launch their first of many jubilee events. This event will be immediately followed by our Pride Durham's bi-monthly Reminisce Retro Video Dance. However, this event has an extra addition. We are fortunate enough to have our Ivy performing with Michelle Ross. This promises to be an amazing show. So, please, mark April 21st on your calendars, and help us make our total evening a success.
Our membership has already exceeded last year's total for the same period, and that is so promising. In the past week, there have been 3 renewals, and 3 new memberships. It won't be long before we reach June, when the pro-rated membership begins.
To sum it all up, we need you, the community to support us in our efforts to keep the Club moving forward in a positive direction.
Have a great April

| Let's Chat - by Rob |
Hoping to inspire people to make positive changes within themselves thereby creating a more inclusive, happier and positive world!!!
Topic:
Looking at the past with Regret
How many of you reminisce about the past and find yourselves saying "oh, I wish (filll in the blank)" or "I regret doing this" or "If I can change a moment/time in my past, I would (fill in the blank)".....my question to you would be, Why? Why would you want to change something that has happened already? What would you get out of it that you haven't already?
Here is how I consider my past: Yes, there are many things that were not great about my past, there was physical and emotional abuse, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, etc. Along with many negative emotions and memories of the past - I have more joyous and positive memories. I feel that all the obstacles I faced in my past and the decisions I have made in the past have made such a huge and pivotal impact on who I am/have become as a person today. Have I not gone through all my stuggles or trials and tribulations I may not have become a vegetarian, an animal advocate, an environmental advocate etc. Why struggle with things that have already taken place, that we can't do anything about?
I am a huge believer in living for the moment. Live for the now - you can't look back and you can't determine the future. What you can do, is think about what you say and the actions that you take, TODAY - they may have a positive and profound effect on our tomorrow. Take notice of how you treat others and what you say to them. Are you empowering them? Are you giving constructive criticism? Are you not imposing your judgements on them? Are you allowing them to be who they are meant to be?
I may not have an educational degree - I am definately not the smartest person in the world. The knowledge and experience that I do have is knowledge and experience that money can not buy. LIFE KNOWLEDGE - I love learning about our struggles, without them we would not become compassionate and loving people. I love that I learn more new things about myself everyday. I love evolving and listening to other peoples objectives and opinions as this helps me become more and more non-judgemental. Never look at the past with regret, because you probably would not be the great person that you have become today!
LIVE FOR THE MOMENT and ADVOCATE POSITIVE CHANGE FOR OUR TOMORROW
Love, light and joy to all of you! |
| Community Events - What's going on in Durham? |
Hey all =) I'm excited to let you all know about what's going on here at the AIDS Committee. Starting this month we have both a nurse and a physician here for you to access on a drop-in or by-appointment basis on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Services that can be provided include: wound assessment and dressing, health assessments, immunizations, wart removal, screenings, and nutritional counselling. The physician is able to provide non-narcotic prescriptions, but is only in the office in the afternoons while the nurse will be in during regular office hours on those days. Also, on months where there are five Wednesdays (May, August, October) they will be here on the fifth Wednesday as well. A health card is not necessary for an appointment, nor do you have to be a client to access these services. This is great news, so please share this information with anyone who could benefit. To book an appointment call toll free 1 (877) 361-8750. In other news, make sure to mark your calendars for the Day of Pink on April 11th, the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination, Homophobia and Transphobia in schools and communities. Check in with The AIDS Committee of Durham Region's Facebook group to see what we have planned, but if you can't make it out, at least make sure to wear pink and show your support. Check out http://www.dayofpink.org/ for more information. Lastly, A Taste For Life, ACDR's annual fundraiser is coming up on April 25th. The idea is simple - you go out to eat to a restaurant and they donate a portion of your bill to the AIDS Committee. A complete list of which restaurants in the Durham Region are a participating can be found on our website http://aidsdurham.com/tasteforlife . You get to help us meet our goal of $10 000 and you look good by taking your sweetheart out for dinner. It's a win-win! Play safe! Glenn Blake m2m@aidsdurham.com

| Cleaning Corner - by the Queen of Clean | |

Cleaning is one of my favorite things to do, believe it or not! I love cleaning.
With the warm and beautiful weather that we have been having lately it is the best time to open your windows & patio doors and let some fresh air in! Circulation of fresh air will help make your place smell and feel fresh again. It is better than always spraying some Febreeze air freshener in the apartment. Remember to be careful about spraying these products in your apartment when you have pets as it can be dangerous for their breathing!
The product of the month is the BISSELL Compact Upright Vacuum (with power groom compact pet)! Wow what a product. When I opened my Christmas present from Richard Twigg and Gordon Dick and saw this new vacuum, well I just about wet myself! LOL! I already had a vacuum cleaner since my 1st apartment, but they felt that since I adopted 2 little kittens, that this would be better to pick up the cat hair. This vacuum cleans and picks up pet hair very good and it even has an attachment especially for fabric on sofas and beds.
The cost of this item can range depending at which store you purchase it from. It is available at Walmart is $59.96 Online (regular price was $69.94) for the exact one that I have.
Regards,
Chardonnay
