| Greetings! |
Jubilee Committee Starting !!I had been writing my latest rant about loyalty but towards the end of February the board surprised me with my latest task. So, I saved my rant for another month. Mainly because the new task I have is much more upbeat and exciting. I'm thrilled to say I'll be chairing a group of some of the most talented people that I really really respect from the Club. Our group is in charge of planning some celebratory events to commemorate the Club's 25th Anniversary. So, if you have any thoughts or ideas you think would be great, SEND THEM TO ME !!! and we'll discuss them. All I can say for now is that I'm thrilled that I'm going to be working with a great group of people and I'm excited to be planning some great activities for our Jubilee Anniversary. It really is a huge milestone. Not every business makes it this far. If it were not for the hard work that Club 717 and it's founders did over the past 25 years, our community would not be the same today. Club 717, trend setting, original and community oriented. Make sure you keep an eye out for more details.... It's going to be a great year ! Have a great month, Ed |

| Presidents Report | Hello, It's March, Already! Time is flying, there is no way we are going to get accomplished all that we want to do! It seems like it was just a very short time ago we were elected, and yet we are going into our 5th month. We have been busy getting in great performers and lining up fantastic shows and events. There are more plans in the works that you will be happy with and we think will be a great additional service to all of our members, we will keep you posted. There are so many things in the works as far as shows go, and there are new things coming up in the community, as well, we are venturing into Toronto to show some support and we have an evening planned at the Regal on Church, great restaurant with great food and super friendly staff, a lot of you have been there and know it as Chik A Roo. On Thursday March 08th we have arranged a show to be hosted by the one and only Candice Kelly, Candice has four other performers coming out with her, this is to raise toonies for T.I.C.O.T. all proceeds from the two dollar shots will go to T.I.C.O.T. we really should show some support as they have shown the Club a lot of support for the past three years. It can also be a welcome back party for Gerard who we all or most of us, or some of us love and miss. As spring approaches, I realize what a crazy winter this has been, but camping season is fast approaching and I can't wait. This, of course means I will be around a little less, so now is the time to pop in and see friends before we all get really busy with summer stuff, before you know it, Election time will be upon us again. Think about running for the Board, I have heard a lot of ideas over the years and there is always room for fresh blood, don't just give your opinions, get involved, be the change you want to see. (Quoted from a person I consider a good friend). That's it for me. Keep safe, Danny |

| Community Challenge - by Jean-Guy Dugas | There are so many ways that we as members of the LGBTQ community can help other charities out.
Here are some challenges to our Club 717 patrons and members.
1) Volunteer to the AIDS Committee of Durham
2) Volunteers are needed for Pride Durham Inc.
3) Purchase 1 or 2 toys and 1 or 2 food (canned) items per month then when Club 717 has its Food & Toy Drive at Christmas drop it off. This way you will not feel so financially stressed out at Christmas.
4) You can also mail in or drop off your unused Canadian Tire Money to Club 717 and then we will use it only to purchase toys for the kids at our 2012 Toy Drive at Christmas.
Remember it is not how many toys or how much money you spend on the volunteer work or donations, but it is the feeling in your heart that you were able to make a contribution and a difference for someone that is in need. |

| Treasurers Report - by John |
It's hard to believe that March is here and in full swing already. We have a great line up for all the March Friday and Saturday nights, so make sure you read this newsletter, the weekly eblasts, and our website so you don't miss anything.
I want to thank the Board members and patrons who dedicated so much of their time to making the events in February such a success. We have enthusiatic people who are loyal to the Club, and only want to see it continue to grow strong. What a tremendous contribution we are to the community and to be strong for 25 years. This is a milestone, and we all should be proud to say we know it's OUR place to go.
On that note, let me inform you that a 25th year committee has been formed, and will be planning events to commemorate our long standing presence in an ever growning Community. It was decided at the last meeting to have the Newsletter Editor, Ed chair the committee. As you all know by now, when he gets an idea....it's full steam ahead. So, watch for some exciting things.
I should also note that our new furniture enhances the interior of the Club. However, all the members and patrons should treat the lounges and chairs as if they were their own. We are trying to listen to the patrons, and obtain more comfortable seating, so let's make them last.
March has a great line-up. Please mark all the events down so you don't miss out on anything. Our membership is still growing, and to date, we are well ahead of last year. More people are hearing about the benefits of being a member, and the great savings in money. Keep spreading the word.
I look forward to seeing you at the Club and saying "Hi". Please remember, it's your place to enjoy with your friends. All the best John |

Topic:
How hard is it for you to ask for help when you need it?
We have all witnessed when friends or loved ones are faced with difficult times in their lives. Many of them are so shaken up by the situation that they have no idea how to work through it, some may not even give you the slightest indication about what they are facing but mainly, we are sometimes to proud or stubborn to ask those we love for help.
In my personal experience - there have been times were I could have used the advice, guidance and support of a good friend or relative - and I know that most would be more than happy to help, but I was too proud to even ask. It is our nature to act out of kindness and compassion, but why is it so hard for us to ask for that kindness and compassion? We are so desensitized through media and the lack of personal communciation (hence this blog) that we don't even bat an eyelash when there are millions of people starving, dying because of war or disease, corrupt politicians, dictators murdering thousands of their own people, environmental catastrophes and greedy corporations. It is our responsibility to act and demand better of our society and of each other!
I have learned from my past that it is very important to ask for help when we most need it. I remember a moment in my life were my will and my heart was broken - I was living, but only as a black and white photocopy of my usual colourful self (lol). It was a point in my life where I needed the love and encouragement of friends and especially family. I assumed that most people would see my demeanour and initiate conversation by asking if everything was alright - I did not count on the fact that most people are uncomfortable in the simple concept of asking someone if everything was truly okay. In their defence - I also did not ask for the help I needed. Fortunately for me, the emotional pain was so overwhelming that I finally did seek the assistance I required to overcome this obstacle in my life. I am so grateful for it today!
We have to take a more proactive approach and be aware of those around us who may need our assistance - we don't have to pry, but we know those individuals who sit next to us at work, most of us know our neighbours and we know are friends and family very well. We must take notice to ensure their well-being because when we help them, we also help ourselves! When we give back (whether that is offering someone emotional, physical or financial assistance) the satisfaction and gratification we receive is much more worth it in the end.
I hope that by reading today's post it has sparked your desire to help someone in need. Put your intentions out into the universe and follow your heart. Together we can inspire others to make changes for the greater good of humanity and this planet. It all starts with you.
Love, light and joy to all of you! |

Outbreak of Kennel Cough in Durham Region
With an outbreak of kennel cough in the Durham Region, many dog owners are wondering if they need to vaccinate.
Kennel cough is also known as Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis. Symptoms generally present 7-10 days after exposure and the worst symptom is a dry, hacking cough that sounds worse than it is. For most dogs this is not a serious condition and will run its course in 2-3 weeks. Antibiotics and cough suppressants aren't needed or much help as kennel cough is caused by a number of viruses, not bacteria; very much like our flu.
The most effective treatment is to either use a cold mist vapourizer or put them in a steam filled room. Vitamin C is a great anti-viral, vitamin E stimulates the immune response system, and vitamin A also boosts immunity. There are also several homeopathic remedies such as Drosera or Lachesis. Consult with your holistic vet to find the best plan of attack.
Like our flu, which has many strains, so does kennel cough. Vaccinating your dog, does not ensure that they will not contract this virus while at the kennel, doggie park, groomer, or even vet's office. Actually, they can pick it up almost anywhere there is a large, concentrated dog population. So, should you vaccinate?
If you are leaving your dog in a kennel or taking them to a doggie daycare facility, you might not have a choice. Many facilities require proof of vaccinations. Otherwise, feeding them a great diet and keeping their immune system strong is generally a better approach.
The right choice for you and your pet is one where you feel at peace with your decision. Inform yourself and choose wisely.
Take Care,
Corry Hamilton

| Community Events - What's going on in Durham? |
Hey All,
Often we talk about good sexual health such as being free of STI's or practicing safer sexual activities. Likewise, we talk about good physical health as exercising regularly and eating healthy food. In general, we have a good sense of, and can talk openly about, what activities constitute good sexual and physical health practices. Another component of a healthy lifestyle which tends to get overlooked is mental health. However unlike physical health, which you are able to quantify in terms of BMI or number of push-ups, or sexual health, which you are able to practise, having positive mental health is difficult to encapsulate. Furthermore, poor decisions made by lingering mental health problems have the potential to lead to physical or sexual health issues. Needing approval because of poor self-esteem could lead to riskier sexual behaviours, in turn, putting your physical health at risk, for example. One of the skills that professionals in the Mental Health field promote is building resilience, the ability to bounce back from tough times like breakups or a job loss. Building your resiliency gives you the confidence to handle life's curve balls and experts recommend plenty of ways to do it! Making connections by building stronger relationships with friends is a great start because it helps to solidify a personal identity. Nurturing a positive view of yourself is an essential part of becoming resilient to life's hurdles. If you are having trouble bouncing back from a particularly tough time, it's important to remember that there are professionals willing to listen and the stigma surrounding users of their services is unfounded. Also, what your insurance won't cover, you can write off in your taxes! Play Safe =)
Finally, just a reminder that the AIDS Committee of Durham Region's Regional HIV/AIDS Conference coming up on March 16th. If you aren't able to make a full day conference, please come out to support ACDR at our Pre-Conference Gala the night before. The event will be hosted by actor Ryan Carnes who you may remember from 'Eating Out' so make sure to come out and support ACDR!
