COMMUNITY CHALLENGE
by Jean-Guy Dugas

There are so many ways that we as members of the LGBTQ community can help other charities out.

Here are some challenges to our Club 717 patrons and members.

1)    Volunteer to the AIDS Committee of Durham

2)    Volunteers are needed for Pride Durham Inc.

3)    Purchase 1 or 2 toys and 1 or 2 food (canned) items per month then when Club 717 has its Food & Toy Drive at Christmas drop it off. This way you will not feel so financially stressed out at Christmas.

4)    You can also mail in or drop off your unused Canadian Tire Money to Club 717 and then we will use it only to purchase toys for the kids at our 2012 Toy Drive at Christmas.

Remember it is not how many toys or how much money you spend on the volunteer work or donations, but it is the feeling in your heart that you were able to make a contribution and a difference for someone that is in need.

Newsletter Editor - Ed Greetings!

If you've ever felt the helplessness of having computer issues, you know how the beginning of this month was for me. The monthly or should I say "Partial Month" newsletter was delayed due to hardware failure.

All I can say is that you MUST MUST MUST always back up your computer information. Without my back up's I would have been dead in the water. You can't plan for a computer crash, just like you can never know when your going to be in a car accident. There are plenty of online programs, virtual hard drives and even services to back up your information effortlessly. Take the time to do it, you'll thank me later !!

As far as being late this month, I do apologize and I hope you didn't miss any of the great shows !! I should be fired, yes fired....hint, hint, nudge, nudge....

Don't miss out on any of Chardonnay's Valentine's Weekend if you can help it. It's one of the largest Prize Give-Away's I've ever seen at the Club !!! Check out her column below !! It took me an hour to retype it.

SAVE THE DATE: REMINISCE 80's & 90's Retro Video Night is February 18th and this month we have a Special Guest from Toronto. Ms. Michelle Ross will be in the house to help raise awareness for Black History Month and to raise funds for Pride Week here in Durham.

Great Work Jean-Guy !!!!

President's Message - by Dan C.

Club 717 President - Jason Allman

Happy Sweetheart's Month,

So far we really cannot complain about winter, the weather has been amazing.

January was a great month at the Club with some very good performances and we saw a lot of talent. Thanks go out to all those that have participated and contributed to the success.

The Board had a meeting and has reviewed with Donny all that is coming up and there is a good line up of things planned.

I am not going to go into detail, I would rather each of the team members report on their respective tasks at hand. The Board meets and puts the wheels into motion and then each party goes about their way. February has some great things lined up and I cannot wait to see you out at some of the planned shows and events.

If you noticed, we still have not taken down the decorations from New Years, we have had several patrons ask to have them up for a while. It is so great to see the work that Tim and Larry planned being so appreciated by everyone. Whoever takes on the task next year does not have a small job. I feel sorry for you.

March shows are booked and we are looking forward to a great month then as well.

Club 717 is now in the works of having a 25th celebration. The Board is now hammering out the ideas, I cannot elaborate at this point, but keep up to date by checking out the website often.

I am excited to attend all that is planned for Valentine's day weekend. Starting With Karaoke, then the Friday Show the Saturday Party and wrapping up Sunday with a quiet night.

Oscar Party, Super Bowl Party, Mardis Gras all in the works.

Entertainment can tell you about that, Memberships are due, Terry can elaborate on this, and Tammy can advise on Promotions.

That is all I have for now, other then to let you all know, there is a great team working together to provide our patrons with a super 25th year, and we hope after the G.M.M. that we will continue having more input from our members, it is for you that we do what we do.

Till Next Time.

Treasurer's Report - by John D.

I was glad to see such a large turn out at the GMM. We discussed a few critical issues and can now go forward with some actions.

In fact, we have listened to the members and have purchased 4 new lounges, 8 new tub chairs and 5 new tables.

This new look enhances the atmosphere and provides those that want seats to have backs on them. More changes are on the way.

Even though the January 31st deadline to re new memberships at the lower price has passed, we still have sold quite a few so far this month. Overall, we are ahead of what was sold last year at this date.

We have done an all out job in providing a variety of entertainment for you this month. Please watch your weekly eblasts and read this newsletter to keep up with everything. The events are also found on our website.

Our popular performer Chardonnay has a fabulous line up for Valentine's celebrations beginning with Karaoke and then a wild romantic Friday night, and our ever popular Saturday Valentine's dance.

We are also inviting our community to help us share in Black History Month. The bi monthly Pride Durham Retro Video dance on Saturday February 18th, will also feature Michelle Ross from Toronto. Please come out and show your support as we honour Black Awareness in our community.

This month, we also celebrate Candice's birthday show. Be sure to get there early because it's always a packed house.

As always I look forward to seeing you and chatting at the Club.

Have a great Month!!!
John

Topic:

1 Million Moms = 1 Million Bullies (Well 40,000)

There was a time (and it still happens today) were people were fired for being black and being a woman. I am sure today people are fired for having different beliefs, sexual orientation, and ethnic background......THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN!!! By now, I am sure that you have heard about Ellen Degeneres becoming a spokeswoman for J.C. Penney. This outraged a group called the 1 Million Moms - they wanted Ellen fired because she is gay. Why do people feel like their 'values of hate' become the values of everyone. I am sick and tired of people stating that their 'traditional' values are the end all and be all. Everytime I hear or see someone spewing about 'traditional' values, it seems to me that those values are shrouded by hate....is that what those 'traditional' values are to these people. I am just waiting for the townsfolk get together with their torches and pitchforks and start rounding all those who have different values and beliefs systems as they do and burn them at the stake. I am sickened at many horrific genocides that have taken place throughout history; People being killed and burned for being pagan and worshipping nature (they called them witches), all the genocide in the name of religion or having different beliefs, the holocaust (jews/blacks and homosexuals - just to name a few, killed because of being different), the civil rights movement - imagine being hated for the colour of your skin and the horror that these humans endured, Darfur, etc....I am tired of people being killed for no other reason than they are different!!!! Bullying has to STOP - It is even worse when the bullying is hidden behind politics/government, religion, education, etc.....THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

Here is Ellen's reply to this 'traditional' values - 1 Million Mom group..........I hope that whomever reads this agrees with the same values as mine (as Ellen so eloquently mentions):

Love and light to all of you!!!

Chardonnay's Cleaning Corner

Cleaning is one of my favorite things to do, believe it or not! I love cleaning. I found that a clean environment such as your apartment, condo, or house is good for your well being.

If your rooms are cluttered up with too many things and not kept cleaned then you will not feel so motivated and there will be a lack of energy. Try to keep your rooms cluttered free, organize and clean and you will notice a huge difference.

Did you know that when you make your bed in the morning that it will then keep the rest of your day organized and focueds? Well it is true. Many counsellors and psychiatrists will tell you this.

Product of the month: is the Mr. Clean Eraser Bad! Wow what a product. It works amazing in the kitchen and to clean in the shower/tub area. The best place to purchase them at a low price is at the Bargain Shop downtown Oshawa as you can get a 2pk for $3.00 or even better at Canadian a 4pk for $4.99

What's Happening in the Community ??

Hey All,

I want to let you all know about the  full day 2012 Durham Regional HIV/AIDS Conference planned for March 16th. It's a great opportunity to learn more about the organization and expand your knowledge of HIV/AIDS related issues and affected communities in Durham Region. Each member of our education team will be having a guest speaker  talk about issues specific to their department (M2M, Women, Youth, Black/African/Caribbean, and IDU-Harm Reduction.)  This conference will be of interest to social service providers, healthcare professionals, students, and community members with a focus on emerging trends and knowledge exchange. If a full day conference isn't your thing, consider attending our pre-conference dinner and keynote address on March 15th. David Hoe from Ottawa will be the keynote speaker for the dinner and actor Ryan Cairns from the movie Eating Out will be the MC for the day of our conference. To attend both the dinner and the conference is $90.00, with a discount for ACDR members.

On another note, if you are interested in being a part of the AIDS Committee's online outreach team, we are having a training session on Saturday February 11th. Conducting online outreach means being available two hours/week to respond to sexual health questions users of various chat rooms and hookup sites may have. Questions about STI's, getting tested, or services that the AIDS Committee provides are common. If you are interested in registering for the training session, or the 2012 Regional HIV/AIDS Conference, please email me at: m2m@aidsdurham.com.

Play Safe =)
