Quote of the Month
New Year & Fresh Start
Everyone should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one more hole in the belt buckle or let one out depending on your circumstances; but on the first of January let everyone adjust him/herself once more, with your face forward and take no interest in the troubles of things that are past.
Funny of the Month
I pointed to two old drunks sitting across the bar from us and told my
friend,
"That's us in 10 years".
He said "That's a mirror, dip-shit!

Pet Care Tip of the Month | |
Increasing Quality of Life Through Custom Orthopedic and Prosthetic Devices
Our pets make our lives complete, so is it any wonder that when they get older or sick that we move heaven and earth to make them better.
In the past, as our pets got older and lost their mobility there weren't a lot of options. Today, pet owners have access to the best diets, supplements, and complimentary therapies. One of the therapeutic options is prosthetic and orthopedic devices.
Orthopedic devices are external braces that offer support to limbs and joints; while prosthetic devices are a partial limb replacement.
There are many reasons that a pet may benefit from an orthopedic device. A pet may be too old or have an underlying health condition that may prevent surgical correction.
Perhaps they underwent surgery, but still require immobilization or extra support to allow the affected limb/joint the time to heal. Finally, your pet may have a neurological or nerve condition that could benefit from extra support to keep the affected limb in a neutral position making walking that much easier.
Prosthetic devices are reserved for pets that that either lost a limb to trauma, cancer or perhaps they were born missing a limb. While most animals can adapt to having 3 legs, it can cause muscle imbalances and injuries later in life.
A veterinary consult is the first step in determining if your pet could benefit from a mobility device. If they think it is the best option, they will refer you to a specialist such as Janice Olynich from Pawsability. Janice offers custom orthotics and prosthetics out of her office in Toronto. She will utilize a three step process, where she casts; test fits and finally provides the finished product.
If you are interested in learning more, please visit her website www.pawsability.ca or give her a call 647 888 6809.

 Greetings!
I would like to wish you a wonderful New Year !! Last year was tough for everyone but we can always choose to start off the year on a good note.
One great way to start off the new year is make a commitment to bettering our community.
It's nice to have a place to feel safe and have a good time. It wasn't always that way. 25 year's ago when the founders started Club 717 they had to fight for everything. It was an era of intolerance and hatred. Today's generation can't just sit and expect it all to be handed to them. The struggles of the community still exist but just in a different manner. Strive to make our community even better.
While community can be experienced in countless ways, the meaning of community might be pretty universal. Below is a list from a class of children. There ages were around 12-14. Often they say "Out of the mouth of babes", we would all be best served to remember some of these quotes:
"Community is being a part of something bigger than yourself" - Joe
"Community is based off trust. Without trust, there is no community. Only a mesh of different people" - Tamara
"Community...a group of people who all have something in common" - Derek
"The people that live around you and affect your everyday life" - Ashley
"Community makes you who you are" - Darius
"Community. Everyone should be involved" - Gunter
"Community comes together to help each other and others in need" - Taylor
"Community is how all people come together. It could be around a brand or just something simple. Community brings unity" - Alexis
"Community is a group of people who like or value the same thing in the same way. They come together as one despite the difference they might have" - Katlyn
"Community: a group of people that have similar interests and involved in the same thing or an area with people living in that area" - Alex
"Community is what bring us together and it is a great way to build relationships"
"We have a Colombian community center which involves people from all over the world to come celebrate the traditions of Colombia" - Sebastian
"Community... describes characteristics about yourself" - Christopher
"My church community means a lot to me. It makes me really happy because it shows people actually care about the ways of god" - Juan
"My community is football"
"My community is my family. It makes me the person I am" - Carlos
To me, a community is a group of like minded people that have each other's backs. They stick together and work as one to succeed. Whether it's a fundraiser for a community group or to help those less fortunate our community has been there and will continue to be here for each other.
Club 717 engaging and celebrating with our community for 25 years. Something I consider a great achievement and I'm thankful to all those that made it what it is today for all of us to enjoy.
So no matter how you define a community, do your part to contribute, be there for someone in need, lend a hand or simply attend a gathering to support a cause. It benefits us all in the end !!
Have a great month and a Wonderful New Year !!

President's Message - by Dan C.

Happy New Year-Thanks Again
Well the biggest task of the year has now been completed, the Annual Club 717 New Year's Party, Thanks to all of you that attended.
I have to say a very huge and special Thank you to the coordinators, Tim and Larry, as expected you guys did an awesome job, but then you went one step beyond that and wowed me again. You two are so in the wrong field and have missed your calling, I think you make great event planners.
Thank you is also required for your helpers who also busted their humps, Charlie, Donny, Jean Guy, Kelly, Chase, Steve and any others that were there to assist. I apologize I was not able to be there as I came down with a cold at Christmas.
I need to also Thank Mike May for the work involved in putting together the video requirements for the evening and the excellent job he has done in helping to carry off the music and video part of the evening. Also a very Special Thanks to John Duvall who even though he has been sick with Bronchitis has fulfilled the request of him to prepare the food for the night. Also a Special Thank you to Suz D for putting together a very last minute video promo for us to put on our web locations.
Last but definitely not least by any means Heart felt Thanks to Antoine Elhashem from Pink Pages and Pink Play Mags for his sponsorship and assistance to make this night happen. Antoine is a very strong supporter of the Club and consistently offers his support both financially and through various media efforts.
I cannot get over how you guys transformed the Club and the efforts made by all involved to make this the best New Years I have seen at the Club.
Christmas was a success and for that we thank all of our patrons and performers who came out to donate for the Annual food and toy drive along with all those who donated their show fees and tips to the Children's Aid toy drive and the Aids Committee of Durham's food bank. Donny and I delivered three full bags of toys and mittens to the Children's Aid along with 34 Wal-Mart Gift cards each worth $25.00. The staff were very happy to receive these gift cards again and had a list of teens already waiting for these.
Although the food donations were down we also raised $850.00 to go to the A.C.D.R. food bank. And there are a couple of boxes of food to go as well. Please remember if at anytime during the year you are able to give a little, the A.C.D.R. can always use food donations. They appreciate foods that are high in protein and any donations you can make goes to help your own community members as well. Christmas is not the only time of the year this organization needs our support.
December had an awesome month filled with some great entertainment and I was both surprised and happy to see a lot of old faces returning to the Club.
We are working hard to improve things and make the Club an enjoyable place for you to come and party and we are happy you choose our establishment to party at. Please be responsible and use a designated driving service; we want to continue having your patronage.
I could go on with a lot more but I am going to cut myself short this time, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a Joyous New Years, and I wish you all a healthy and prosperous 2012.
Warmest Regards,
|

Treasurer's Report - by John D.

Happy 2012 to all the members and patrons of the Club.
For those of you that were fortunate enough to attend our Gala New Year's Ball, you know that the tremendous efforts of all those involved in our 25th Anniversary celebration certainly paid off.
The Board approved a higher than normal budget but it was well worth it. I just want to thank all who got involved. There are too many to thank individually.
As we begin the 25th year, we have some amazing events planned to celebrate it.
I would also like to remind all the current members that you must renew your memberships on or before January 31st to avoid the price increase. You can also take your memberships out Online and they can also be renewed for 2 years.
Keep an eye on your weekly eblasts, newsletter and website and mark all our amazing events on your calendar or in your phone.
Let's take all our positive energy and be Thankful for your Club, and to those who created it and also to the many that allow it to continue.
I wish you all a safe and productive 2012

New Year's Entertainment Team Recap - by Tim
Hi All !! A room filled with love . . . . . When you walked into the club New Years Eve, it was palpable, you could feel the love. The love of the people that helped build that beautiful space for their friends and 'fam-MO-ly'. The love of the staff for their community, the love of the President and the Board of Directors for the members and patrons and I hope, my love for you and "Club 717".
To be asked to produce our New Years Eve Party is truly a huge honour and privilege, and at the same time a massive challenge. New Year's Eve is such an important night for so many of us, a chance of new beginnings, a point in time where we are prepared to work hard at life changes to make our lives happier, more fulfilled, better. To create the space for that moment for so many friends is both daunting and simply awe-inspiring.
The aim was to give you exactly what you all deserved, our greatest efforts to make every aspect of such a 'big' night the very best it could be. Thanks to an INCREDIBLE team I genuinely believe that was what was delivered :-D
I sincerely hope that all our guests had as much fun and felt the joy of the night that I felt.
My heartfelt thanks, respect and love to the sexy stars of the night, Larry, Charlie, Donny, Jean-Guy, Steve, Kelly, Chase, John D, Ed, DJ Mike May and his boys, Antoine, the awesome club staff team and to you, our guests, you made it a truly beautiful night ♥
Thank you all Tim xoxox Hugz Tim & Larry |

Let's Chat - by Rob
Hoping to inspire people to make positive changes within themselves thereby creating a more inclusive, happier and positive world!!!
Topic:
WHEN DO WE STOP OUR SELFISHNESS AND START THINKING ABOUT DOING GOOD FOR OTHERS?
Well - Christmas has passed, it is now time to think about paying off the debt some of us incurred in buying gifts for loved ones. We are also nearing the years end and it is always a good time to reflect on what we have completed in the past (without judgement or pressure if we have not met the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year). I hope that we all stop thinking about ourselves and strive harder to doing things for others. Random acts of kindness like; helping someone take their groceries to their car, holding a door open for someone, buying food for a homeless person, fostering an animal in need of a loving home, etc....
For me - this time of year represents a fresh start to think about what positive things I can do to help those who are less fortunate than me. I vow (to myself) to promise to work harder to create positive change around me, in the community and in the world. I hope that others have similar thoughts and really work hard to ensure that your new year is filled with love, light and positive energy that is infectious and causes others to act in the same manner.
Society puts so much pressure on us - mortgage/rent payments, credit cards, car loans, student loans, etc....why are we making so many demands on ourselves to have a high paying job so that we can create more wealth and debt for ourselves? Why can't we strive to live below our means and live comfortably and at the same time, share with those who struggle to buy food for their children? Is that not what we are supposed to do - to help our fellow men and women? I am astounded on the amount of expendable money that countries have for defence and yet they allow their citizens to starve.
Imagine if we took the time to help someone in need versus worrying about the current celebrity divorce? Imagine what YOU can accomplish by getting some friends together and volunteering for a day at a homeless shelter or animal hospital instead of spending hours watching mindless television? Imagine the change that we can create - a change for good.
I feel that this year is pivotal for change....I believe that many of us are going to be pivotal instruments for positive change. There is an energy in the air......more and more people are tired of watching greed and fear rule the world and we will be making our voices heard in 2012!!!!
I hope that you affirm (for the year ahead) that you will act with compassion, kindness and love for others without judgement - let this be your guide to make 2012 and the rest of your life meaningful
Love and light to all of you!!! Rob

A Pointless Sisters Message - by Glenda
Hello Possums, Ivanna and I have been lovingly hosting the ACDR show monthly, and I must say that it is great to see all of you out to support this great event. We have a lot of fun putting the shows together and creating some shows that are fun and sometimes very "tounge in cheek". Also we have a few shows lined up in the next few months at Club 717, with some new ideas, costumes and music to enjoy. Thanks for the continued support and we do love seeing you when we are performing. Some time in March I will, be having a "mens" fashion show that we will be selling tickets for, the money raised for this event will be donated to ACDR. DO NOT miss this event there will be outfits that will dazzle you, amaze you and also make you wonder how the models got into "those undies " LOL. We would love to see you there more information will follow as Stuart (aka Ivanna Diamond) and I work on creating an event that will be unforgetable. All in all we look forward to entertaining you this year, and love your input and support ! With love " The Pointless Sisters " |

Message from Chardonnay DuBarry
Message #1
First of all, I want to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Now I want to talk to everyone that receives the newsletter from Club 717 about a New Year Challenge. I would like everyone that has some Canadian Tire Money lying around to either drop it off at Club 717 or mail it in to us. This will be collected until the middle of December 2012 & will then be used to purchase toys for the 2012 toy drive at Christmas time. We all have to take the time to remember that there are kids out there that get very little or nothing on Christmas morning, so we need to come together as a strong community and show that we care.
Message #2

Valentine's Day is coming very quickly and I will be hosting the 2012 Valentine's Show (Friday night) and Party/Dance (Saturday Night) Club 717. I will be having a special guest from Toronto on the Friday night and promise it to be an amazing show. There are close to 50 gift prizes and could possibly be more. As we get closer to the event you will also be informed of something special that could happen on Thursday night. I can't give too much information away yet, so keep a look out for February newsletter.

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
JANUARY IN THE GARDEN
Well if you are out in the garden right now, I hope your wearing a couple of boas and some animal fur, to keep the frost from penetrating. And I hope you all have had a very happy Christmas and have some new goals for the New Year.!!!
Well, if you are looking for some indoor plant colour I saw Orchids on sale at "No Frills" for $10.00 to make you holler. Orchid flowers are long lasting, but to keep the plant going you must provide really good humidity, some half decent light requirements and if you can lower the temperature at night to 60 degrees Farenheit, that would be great. But if you really are interested in orchids, you should do some research, so that you can provide the ideal enviroment, to make them grow and prosper. Some orchids are easier than others; but if you are willing to go all out, you can grow and enjoy the more difficult ones too!!!! The flowers are fabulous, coming in many colours, shapes, sizes and some even throw out a magnificent scent. And did I mention that they are long lasting????? But challenging!!! And if you are a person who enjoys the flowers but not the care, You can still purchase the plants, which will last for a couple of months, and then dispose of them. Treat them as a seasonal plant!!! Who knew??
January, to me, is the time to think about your garden......... what was successful; what do you want more of; what do you want less of? are there some new plants that you want to try out in your garden??? This is the time to start planning for next year. If you took some pictures of your garden, this may be a simple procedure. Relying on your memory, may not be so forthcoming. I planted a gold leaf Barberry in the spring, which grew quite vigorously and the fall colour added some orangey / red to the leaf colour, which makes me want to have more of these in the garden. I did not plant any spring bulbs this year, because I could not remember what was out there in the garden. But I am sure that next fall, I will be planting some, because I will be taking some pictures this spring to see what I do have out in the garden. I am due for some replanting of spring bulbs.
If you are a person who is willing to grow from seed, now, if you haven't done it already, is the time to order some seed catalogues!! They are a wealth of information, and can provide you with a list of plants that you haven't even considered. Growing form seed is challenging, but not impossible. But if you are challenged with the fact of growing, you can pick up some plant names, to take to the garden centre, and purchase those plants, that you must have in your garden.
Because December was such a warm month, the gardening mentality went out the window. Very fall like conditions, which does not want you to prepare for winter. So if you haven't already done so, you can wrap up those evergreens, and more tender plants, because winter is on the doorstep!!!
And if you have R E A L Christmas trees, boughs or garland, you can place these in the garden after Christmas over the more tender and demanding plants, so they catch the snow, and add some winter protection. Recycle -- Reuse ......
Till next time in the garden,
Charlie

What's Happening in the Community ??
Hey All,
Now that the holidays are here it seems like we've all got some more free time on our hands. While traditionally the holidays are touted as a time for family and friends, you may be dedicating some of your free time to vent some lingering sexual frustrations which have accumulated over the past year. Sometimes it may not go quite as you planned and you wind up catching something. As if that isn't uncomfortable enough, you may be faced with the reality that you could have passed it on to someone else. So how best to break the news? Maybe you met online and never exchanged info, or maybe talking face to face or over the phone is really not something you're prepared to do. Enter inSPOT.org. Until now the way of breaking the news anonymously was restricted to creating a fake email address, or passing their contact info on to the nurse at the clinic after the fact. inSPOT lets you send an ecard to up to up to six email addresses, with the option to remain anonymous, alerting them to the fact that they've been exposed to someone who has contracted a specific STI. If you've hooked up with someone and want to let them know that you might have passed something on, consider checking this site out.
In other news, the AIDS Committee along with the LGBTQ centre at UOIT are organizing a day of workshops on Feb 4th ranging from Toys for Boys and Toys for Girls, to BDSM and Polygamous Relationships, to Sexual Self Esteem. Registration is a suggested donation of $10 and includes lunch. For more information on our Hot, Horny, and Healthy workshop, or to register, send me an email at m2m@aidsdurham.com.
Play safe =)

Prideline Durham LGBTQ Helpline
Prideline Durham is about to celebrate its first 3 months on the line with residents of Durham Region and like all things new, we're off to a slow start. We like to think of ourselves as the tortoise - slow and steady wins the race!
We have had several connections with the community from those who are questioning their own sexuality and value system to family members looking for support and information. We've also had a few calls from people just saying "it's nice to know you're there when and if I need you". So callers, whenever you're ready.... we're here to talk it out.
If you are interested in volunteering with Prideline Durham, please go to our website www.distresscentredurham.com and follow the links to "Give Help" à "Volunteer Information" à "Application Form". All the information and instructions can be found in that section of the website.
2012 Training Dates are posted (pdf.) on the homepage of our website.
You may also contact the LGBTQ Program Director, Erica Simpson directly at 905-430-3511 x34
