Pet Care Tip of the Month |
Hello Everyone, I have no idea where the time goes. Hard to belive it's that time again. Since the recipes were such a hit last year. I've included a couple more. I've actually had people feed them to their family and friends and they liked them. Have a great day, Corry **************** Fruit Bars 1 cup oats 1 cup brown rice flour 1 tsp lemon/lime rind-grated ¼ tsp nutmeg ¼ tsp cinnamon ½ cup canola oil 1¼-2 cups fruit (remove skin, pits and/or core)-I like a combination of blueberries, apples and pears. Puree fruit. If it is a little runny, you can add a pinch or two of flour to firm the fruit mixture. Mix the remaining ingredients. It will be crumbly. Place 1 cup dry mixture in the bottom of a lightly greased 9X9 pan. Firmly press down. Spread the fruit mixture and top with the remaining dry mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes. The bars are ready when the fruit puree is firm and the bars hold their shape when they are cut. Cool for 1-2 hours and then cut into bars. Cheese Treats 2 cups white rice flour ½ cup- 1 cup low fat cheese ¼ cup canola oil ¼ cup water Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Knead the dough. Roll out to ½ inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until firm to the touch. Allow the cookies to cool for 1-2 hours ************ Please Consider "Taking the Lead" for your pet care needs > Dog Walking

 Greetings!
I want to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas !
Yes, I know I said the "C" word but you'll just have to excuse me. We live in a world now where core traditions and a person's right to celebrate a Holiday is questioned in fear of offending someone. I'm starting to come to the belief that all everyone is interested in is "DRAMA". Drama in life, work, family and community.
Do we have nothing better to do than cause stress for those around us. I Look at it this way, if "Santa" offends you don't sit on his lap. If Christmas offends you, don't celebrate it. It's your choice. But at the same time, don't expect everyone else around you to be afraid to say Merry Christmas just because your not participating. Just sit back, enjoy the festive season cut out the drama entirely in your life and enjoy it while it lasts. Before you know it, the New Years hang-over is pounding and it's back to work. That's my two cent's worth.........and no I don't want change back !

President's Message - by Dan C.
WOW, so was there even a November? That month just flew by. One of the first things I would like to do is to Welcome Glenn Blake as the new men's outreach worker with the A.C.D.R., Glenn has some pretty big shoes to fill in replacing Mark Hamman as the men's outreach worker, but he has taken on the task and is going full out. Glenn, I lend you my support in any way I can and am sure you will prove to be a welcome member of the community.
As far as November goes it went so fast, or at least we were so busy we did not notice it. Immediately after the A.G.M. we went straight to work on Halloween, we had a great Halloween party at the Club and the weekend proved to be very successful Friday with Farra and Savaugnah and then Saturday with the private party on of coarse. Our Sunday Halloween party was much busier then we thought it would be and turned out to be quite the night.
Once we got through October, we had to get the Planning on for November, this of coarse involved a night of the Kings and we also have arranged an intimate evening with Kendall a keyboardist from Toronto and awesome vocalist. He has not been out to the Club for some time. Kendall was missed and he did a great job at providing us all with some superb entertainment, also John put on a delicious spread for the event. At the end off the Month we had the amazing Sofonda Cox on the 25th another evening of great entertainment with our own Benn Dover as well.
I will leave the balance of entertainment for Donny to report on.
I am very excited to say things are going very well and we have been seeing many old faces out at the Club, along with several new ones as well.
We apologize that it took us so long to get the New Years news out to you, but your new board has been working on lots of things at the same time. This looks like a very promising evening and we want to make sure we get it right. The theme is being handled by Tim and Larry and I have no doubt what so ever that they will impress our socks off. I am looking forward to it and tickets are now available.
Posters for New Years and Tickets are at the Club. I will let Tammy elaborate on this as she is our promotions person.
When Karen asked me to run for the Board again, she promised she would run along with me and be my backup. Well I am pleased to be working with her as she is a great source of confidence and we seem to be on the same page most of the time. I feel that you have elected a strong, confident and enthusiastic Board of Directors and I look forward to a year with all of them. We have had past experience and look forward to new experiences, and we are pumped for a year of fun and excitement.
And now that Karen has got me into this she tells me I am killing her! I replied I am not, I just own you for the next year. :)
I am enjoying working with this board and the staff and all of the performers and am very happy that a lot of those who had a break, are coming back. This will only add to the vision we the board, have for the Club.
You will notice some subtle improvements starting to happen, this has been discussed by the Board and we all feel the Club needs a redecorate and a new energy.
The full board spent a few days down here cleaning, this meant every cupboard inside and out, all floors, bathrooms, storage areas and non visible rooms and the floors have been stripped and cleaned and the bathrooms have been repainted, this is a start of what is to come, we hope you will like the changes as they occur. Great Work Donna ! the floors shine again !! The washrooms have been re painted and also the drag room. A great thanks To Lin B.
We have loads of plans for improvements and this will be happening for a while till we get it where we want it to be. But the staff and the board are both enthusiastic and excited to see these changes come into fruition.
I have to say, the camaraderie and energy are so renewed and I think this is an inspiring board that are all driven and I cannot even get the ideas out before I have volunteers.
You members have been so positive and we are feeding off your enthusiasm. My list of Thank you's include John D, Ed F, Donny P, Aaron C, Ry C, Suz D, Sean F, Jackie G, Tammy D, Jason A, Andrea, Kelly H, Steve B, and last but not least Karen H.
Others who I need to recognize and thank are Roy M, Mike C, Kendall P, Jean Guy D, Donna McP, Lin B, Edna, Madge, Ruby, Glenda, Ivanna, and Kelly H and Tim B and Larry C.
Without the support of all of these people, things just would not happen. Thank you all for volunteering and dedicating your precious time and giving to the community is for us all to enjoy.
I am looking forward to an amazing 25th year of D.A.A.S.C. o/a Club 717 in Durham and a positive and exciting year of working with a great group of people. I hope to see you all out at the Club in December.
I would like to thank the Christmas decorating committee. Which includes: John D., Ed F., Donny P., Jean-Guy D., Joe G., Tom H., Steve B., Charlie S., Larry C., Pat C., Francesca., Kelly H., Christopher J., Stuart S. and Peter.
Lastly, I would like to wish our precious members and patrons a very safe and Merry Christmas. I wish all of you a very Happy and prosperous New Year. I ask that you all act responsibly and don't drink and drive. Please use one of our Designated Driving Services. We value our members and patrons and their safety.
Till Next month
Thanks Again

Treasurer's Report - by John D.

Dear Members and Patrons;
I want to thank all of you that participated in any way towards our magnificent shows for the month of November. The Board has worked hard to put together an amazing line up for you, and it is paying off. We have spent a little more, but we have had capacity crowds and many old faces return.
As you know, we are back under the guidance of President Dan Caudle, and along with that comes many ideas and plans for the amazing 25th Anniversary Year. Thanks Dan.
It's hard to believe that December is here already. So many homes have their outside lights on already. People are really in the Christmas mood. It's no different at the Club.
We have both Friday and Saturday nights planned for December, and of course the New Year's Eve party will not only commemorate the true beginning of our 25th year, but will be one of the best we've seen. Tickets are on sale and going great, so you won't be disappointed. We have a great team put together to make sure we're over the top.
Prorated memberships are still available and also 2012 memberships will be available in the next week. We've already had a few renew their membership on line.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to share some thoughts especially during the Christmas season and also with the Club's 25th Anniversary.
A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to present Roy Miles with his birthday cake, and for those of you that were there, I also shared a message.
We are living in an era with constant changes, but do any of us stop to reflect on the previous decades. At this time, we should definitely be considerate of the bullying and teen suicides, but this is really no different than it was 20 or 30 years ago. If anything, things were worse back then because today's society is more accepting of the community due to the efforts of all the various agencies and publications. Back then they had no Facebook or social media to help get the word out. Change has progressed rapidly.
Twenty five years ago, we were fortunate enough to have this special group in our community who banded together to form D.A.A.S.C (aka Club 717). These men and women all held respectable jobs, yet they risked being humiliated, scorned, bullied to put our Club together so we could have a place to call "our own". A place to feel comfortable in. A place that's seen it's up's and down's, but is still in operation today. It's still continuing to serve the community in a positive way.
Since the Club is a Not-for-profit organization, it has always given back to the community, to all groups, not just the "Gay" ones.
This will be the 8th year that I've been a member of the club and I still can't do enough to ensure that it continues to grow and provide the sanctity that we all need.
I really want the youth of today to be aware that when they walk through the door, they are not just walking into a fun and relaxed place to be, but they are walking through history because of our founding members. To this group of people, we should be eternally grateful. It's because of them and the way they paved the way, you're seeing the LGBTQ community expanding in Durham.
This is why this year is so special to many of us. Club 717 - 25 years supporting our community !! and going strong.
As your treasurer, I'm thrilled to see our 4th quarter doing so well. From what I've seen so far and projections, 2011 / 2012 is going to be a banner year for our Club, paving the way for more expansion possibilities !!
I wish each and every one of you nothing but the best for a great holiday season and a fantastic New Year.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the Club. Have a great month

Entertainment Update - by Tim
Hi All!! Larry and I would just like to say how thrilled, honoured and excited we were to be asked to join the New Years Eve Party team. As always, it is our intention to bring you the most spectacular party playground we can dream up. . . . and Boy!! have we been dreaming!!! This year will see the return of our awesome cold Gala Buffet and amazing Dessert Table :-D ...... calories served with champagne don't count so be sure not to miss the Champagne Toast at midnight. Of course there will be all the trimmings of New Years Eve, the favours, the noisemakers, the prizes and surprises and I'm lead to believe even a hint of royalty, all served up with the fantastic party of sound brought to us by the incredible DJ May Day. This year, for the first time, we are pleased to be offering a limited number of dining tables, for those that prefer traditional over bar seating. Contact Donny for details. Now to go find a feller about a party!! Hope to see you all there Hugz Tim & Larry |
From the Vice Prez - by Karen H.
Hi everyone,
Let me begin by thanking our members for placing their trust in me by electing me to the Board of Directors for this coming year. I feel honoured and proud and will work hard on your behalf.
Having been the VP for just over a month at this point, I certainly have been kept busy (Danny tells me he owns me for the next year--yikes! Lol), but in a powerfully positive way. Both I and the other Board members have been very busy planning an exciting and memorable New Years Eve celebration that is certain to be a sold out event so please get your tickets early!
In addition to the New Years Eve event, we have many plans in place for the coming year that are designed to increase our membership, "wow" our existing members and bring our Club to a whole new level. Please stay tuned! As always we welcome and appreciate your constructive feedback on all of our endeavours.
As a member of your Board of Directors, I, like the other Board members, work on behalf of you, our members. In effect, we are 10 people who essentially "run" Club 717. Can you imagine what we could achieve if we had 100 people running it? So, if you haven't already done so, please consider renewing your membership for 2012. Better yet, why not purchase a membership for your friends and/or family members as a Christmas gift?
With the holiday season fast approaching, I encourage each of you to reflect on what you can PERSONALLY do to help bring your Club to the next level.
I personally am excited, energized and inspired by what we already have planned and know that you, our members, will feel the same as the changes we have planned "come to life".
Have a safe and happy holiday season. May each of you feel blessed, grateful, and loved!
Sincerely, Karen Hillier

Threat Post
Many of the Android apps that come pre-installed on a variety of Android devices from manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung, Google and others have access to more services and capabilities on the devices than they should or that users are aware they have, according to new research. These "capability leaks" can sometimes be inherited from other apps, but the researchers say that they constitute significant security weaknesses on the Android devices.
The new research was done by a group from North Carolina State University, and the results they came up with are not particularly pretty. They wrote a tool called Woodpecker that analyzes each app on the phone to see whether it can reach certain dangerous permissions on the phone from a public interface. They found that, among the 13 specific permissions they analyzed, 11 of them were leaked to various apps on the handsets.
After identifying these capability leaks, the researchers spent a considerable amount of time on reporting them to the corresponding vendors. As of this writing, Motorola and Google have confirmed the reported vulnerabilities in the affected phones. HTC and Samsung have been really slow to respond to, if not ignoring, the reports/inquiries. Although the uncovered capabilities found on the HTC and Samsung phones have not been confirmed by their respective vendors. The researchers have published their paper, "Systematic Detection of Capability Leaks in Stock Android Smartphones".
But wait, there's more bad news for the Android community as viruses are seeping their way into the little green robots functions. The latest report is straight out of Kaspersky Labs who have announced that the first malicious program, a Trojan-SMS has been detected for smartphones running on the Android OS. The Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, has already infected a number of mobile devices. Disguised as a media player application the Trojan is actually malicious program that, if installed, will start sending SMSs to premium rate numbers without you even knowing resulting in your money passing from a your account into that of the cybercriminals

Let's Chat - by Rob
Hoping to inspire people to make positive changes within themselves thereby creating a more inclusive, happier and positive world!!!
Topic: The Holiday Season
This holiday season can I recommend a different approach to shopping for gifts for your loved ones? Most of the people we know already have an abundance of materialistic goods, so why not think out of the box and present them with something you and they will feel great about?
Here are some suggestions:
- Donate to a local animal shelter on behalf of the person you are buying a gift for. - Volunteer at a homeless shelter and then make a gift donation. - Buy toys, clothing, books, music etc....and donate to a local women's shelter. - Send money to support a needy child in another country with a reputable non-profit organization. - Give to a well known environmental group. - When eating out, offer to pay someones check without them knowing. - Donate to a community hospital. - Buy non-perishable food items and drop them off at your local food bank or homeless shelter.
If you can't afford to give money or purchase items for any non-profit organizations, volunteer your time - it is rewarding and a life changing experience. But most of all, a gift that you can give everyone for free - LOVE and POSITIVE ENERGY!!!!
The joy you will feel from the love you give into the world is wonderful. Let it fill you up and let that love spread. Make your positive energy and joy contagious and infect everyone you know with it!!!
Love and light to all of you!!!
All the best, Rob

Hey all =)
Did you know that AIDS Awareness Week just passed at the end of November? The AIDS Committee of Durham Region had several events planned to mark the occasion such as flash mobs, an art show, movie viewings and a candlelight memorial on World AIDS Day, Dec 1st.
The month of December is thought of as a time for giving, but you don't have to limit yourself to only December, the AIDS Committee needs volunteers all year round. If you have some free time in 2012 and want to make a difference in our community, get in touch! Volunteers are a huge part of our organization. They make our events successful and there is a variety of opportunities to help out based on your skills and interests.
Just a heads up that the Oshawa Sexual Health clinic is closed for renovations this month and will likely not be open until late December or early January. If you do need to go to a clinic during this time you can find one in Pickering or Port Perry, both of which do rapid HIV testing which only takes 20 minutes. For more information, check out the Durham Region website. www.region.durham.on.ca and follow the health link.
Remember, it's the time of year when you're encouraged to give AND receive, so have fun and play safe!

Hello,
My name is Sarah and I organize an informal group called Writing Rainbow.
Writing Rainbow's mandate is to provide a positive space for LGBTQ-identified people under thirty years of age - and their allies - to connect with each other, explore LGBTQ+ issues and identities, and become better writers.
The group involves approximately an hour of participant-directed discussion and conversation, then an hour of writing exercises or working on projects in progress. Constructive criticism and feedback is available if needed. The group is free to attend.
Writing Rainbow is held weekly at Debbie's Cafe (95 Harwood Ave S., Ajax) from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Our goals for the next year involve adding a list of more specialized activities and workshops.
Please feel welcome to contact me with any questions or comments.

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN This has been a dry fall, in my opinion, and those newly planted trees and shrubs, and shrubs and plants that are under big trees and under the eaves of the house, may be in great need of some water. If they are too dry going into winter, the frost will dehydrate them even further, leaving you with dead plants in the spring. Rhododendrons, azaleas and tender evergreens may be wrapped for winter to prevent sun scald, wind damage and branch breakage from heavy snowfalls. Place 3 or 4 tall stakes into the ground around the plant and then wrap with burlap or some breathable material and then tie or staple it in place. This covering should be removed around Easter time, as too much protection in the spring may cause growth to begin too early and then be nipped by frost. If you have roses, hydrangeas or other tender shrubs, you can hill them up with about one foot of soil or compost, to protect them. Again around Easter time , remove that hill of soil, so growth does not start too early, and then get nipped by the frost. If you can dig, you can still plant tulips, daffodils and other bulbs, along with shrubs and trees. The shrubs and trees will need to be well watered and staked , so that winter winds do not blow them over. I like to leave the garden intact until spring, but if you so desire, you can cut back those perennials and unruly shrubs now. Mulching the garden now, is like putting a blanket on for winter. 2 to 3 inches of mulch should suffice. And if you receive or purchase amarylis bulbs, pointsettias, paper whites, hyacinths for the Christmas season, they can be saved for future enjoyment. Amarylis needs to be kept growing after it flowers, and it is good to put it outside for the summer. Bring it in after Labour day and stop watering it until Christmas when you can start to water it again, and watch it bloom again. Paperwhites and Hyacinths; once they have bloomed continue to water until the leaves start to yellow ; then stop. Once spring has arrived, you can plant them in the garden, where they should come up the following spring. Pointsettias are tropical plants from Mexico, and can be grown as year round houseplants. They can get rather large (small shrub size) but pruning them will keep them to a manageable size. Again it is best to place these outside for the summer months and fertilize on a regular basis; bring them inside for the winter. Best kept in a room by the window, but a room that you do not use as turning on lights can disrupt their needs to flower. They flower under short days, hence Christmas. But if you disrupt the long night, they may fail to flower. And perhaps some of you may be wondering what to get your GARDENER for Christmas. Gardening books with loads of colour pictures are a must. Garden gloves, gardener's hand cream, fancy flower pots, plants, seeds, a trellis, gift cards for a garden centre, and even a trip to Mexico would be most appreciated. It's hard to believe that another year is coming to it's end. I wish you all a happy and safe Holiday season and may your turkey be juicy. And if you are at Club 717 for New Year's Eve , I'll see you there, if not sooner. A very Merry Christmas and a most Happy New Year to you'all, Till next time in the garden, Charlie Plant Expert & Newsletter Columnist charlie.samms@gmail.com |
