Well I don't know what to say, like in the movie poltergeist, I'm back!

Hey Everyone, I just want to say Hi and Thanks for once again placing your confidence in me. As you are aware Oct 30th was the day for the Annual General Meeting for the members of Club 717.

And the election brought about a new Board. Jason Thank you for all your work over the past year, it was not an easy time, but you did a good job. For any critics, this takes a lot of work and time from your Board and it is a thankless job a lot of the time, please remember these people are doing this work for free. Also a big Thank you to Rob and Lance, your work did not go unnoticed.

This last weekend of October was incredible for attendance and participation, thank you to everyone who helped and you already know who you are as I have thanked you on the Events page.

Lastly a big Thank You to the entertainment team for suggesting that we do the Halloween party on Sunday Oct 30th. Your suggestion was responsible for a great turnout. Thank you to all those that came and decorated because it looked amazing. Thanks to John D for preparing the food, your Pizza was just as good as Pizza Pizzas. And DJ May Day an awesome job on the music. Jay, you did a great job on bar and held it all together very well on your own, Big thanks for all your hard work.

Our first task was appointing the new Board and these are the positions as they have been filled.

We already have some great plans which we hope to bring to realization very soon, and New Years has been arranged.

The details and ticket prices will be available very soon.
The theme is awesome and Tim and Larry have agreed to decorate and set the mood. These two guys do the most incredible things with the space and the ideas they have will blow you away, I am sure this will be a sellout so get your tickets early. We have sold out for the past three to four years. A meal will be provided along with your midnight glass of champagne in the price.

We have an intimate evening with Kendall set for the 19th of November to kick off our Christmas season, and we have the incredible Sofonda Cox coming out to perform for you on the 25th of November, a show you will not want to miss, Sofonda will be accompanied by our one and only FABULOUS Benn Dover, who never ceases to impress with the numerous characters and costumes he comes up with, This is the beginning of our 25th year and we are going to spend the year doing what we can to impress our members who have placed their confidence in us.

Treasurer's Report - by John D.

Dear Members and Patrons;

Well, the AGM is now history, and once again I have accepted the position of Treasurer. Although it is a time consuming position, it is also gratifying.

As for the past 3 years, I will strive to serve as your Treasurer to the best of my abilities.
We have so much to be proud of at the Club, and the new Board has so many great ideas to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary.

I am so pleased to have Danny back at the helm. He is filled with excitement, ideas, devotion and energy, which is just what we need.

We have an exciting line up for the month of November, including an early Christmas Kickoff evening with Kendall on the keyboard, and a delicious buffet to enjoy.

The New Year's Eve plans are finalized and the evening will be fabulous. Details will be available shortly, but do circle the date on your calendar.

I would also like to extend my thanks to those on last year's Board that chose not to return this year. We had a great year, and in this economic downturn, we managed to maintain an even bank balance.

Please pay close attention to your Newsletter, weekly eblasts, Facebook, and our website, so you don't miss any of our thrilling events.

Have a great month, and see you at the Club!!!

John

Hoping to inspire people to make positive changes within themselves thereby creating a more inclusive, happier and positive world!!!

Topic: Let us end bullying - too many kids are ending their lives !!

We have all seen the IT GETS BETTER youtube videos in support of ending bullying - they are GREAT but, we need to do more. I just read a twitter post by a teen who succumbed to bullying and ended his life. This is unacceptable. We must engage with teens and be vigilant in ending this horrible bullying. Here is the tweet that the boy sent out prior to ending his life......I find it touching that even after enduring harassment at the hands of his bullies - he finds it in his heart to say he loves them.

I hope this post gives you an outlet to take action and stand up for what is right. Stand up to the bullies - they are the ones that are making the decision easier for these kids to end their precious lives. It is stories such as this, that make it hard to remain positive - especially for those causing all the negativity, but I shall not judge those that made this boy end his life

All the best,

Contribution to Club 717 2011 Newsletter

Prideline Durham is a new telephone helpline service with a focus on supporting the well-being of the LGBT community in Durham Region. In collaboration with several community partners (PFLAG Durham, Community Development Council of Durham and AIDS Committee Durham Region), Distress Centre Durham took the natural role of developing the programming for this service where those in the LGBT community who are experiencing life challenges and mental health distress, can turn to for non judgmental support from an empathetic person who can understand their unique concerns, encouraging them to meet goals and reach their full potential.

If you are interested in volunteering with Prideline Durham, you can fill out and submit application at www.distresscentredurham.com

Currently recruiting volunteers for Prideline Durham! Interested applicants should know that:

In order to volunteer with Distress Centre / Prideline Durham they have to:

-       commit to volunteer for 1 year

-       donate a minimum of 16 hours (DCD helpline) or 8 hours (Prideline)

-       Not have called the centre for support in over 1 year

-       Agree to have DCD contact their counselor/therapist/psychiatrist if they are involved in professional support (this is a generic letter indicating the type of work they will be doing at the centre and the professional's opinion if they're client is able to work on the lines without triggering a negative reaction)

-       Provide a current criminal record check (they will need a letter from DCD for the $15 CRC, otherwise it costs $45)

To apply, go to www.distresscentredurham.com and follow the links to volunteer opportunities. Fill out the application indicating they are interested in working for Prideline. Once we receive the application, we contact them to schedule a telephone interview, then to come in for a registration meeting. The next step is to complete the DCD Basic training, with a one-day follow up training for Prideline. Our next basic training dates are:

We would like to thank everyone who attended An Evening of Hope on October 20th. If we are ever to eradicate bullying we can only do so through education and standing together against Homophobia/Transphobia.  PFLAG Durham Region will continue to focus on education in the schools and our community. We continually look for opportunities to bring awareness and have spent many hours delivering presentations, providing media interviews and participating in forums and on panels. Increased awareness we hope will lead to a decrease in isolation that many LGBT youth feel.

The 2011/2012 PFLAG Durham Region board is now at full complement and I would like to introduce our team:

Hello,

My name is Sarah and I organize an informal group called Writing Rainbow.

Writing Rainbow's mandate is to provide a positive space for LGBTQ-identified people under thirty years of age - and their allies - to connect with each other, explore LGBTQ+ issues and identities, and become better writers.

The group involves approximately an hour of participant-directed discussion and conversation, then an hour of writing exercises or working on projects in progress. Constructive criticism and feedback is available if needed. The group is free to attend.

Writing Rainbow is held weekly at Debbie's Cafe (95 Harwood Ave S., Ajax) from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Our goals for the next year involve adding a list of more specialized activities and workshops.

Please feel welcome to contact me with any questions or comments.

Got Plant Issues? - by CharlieGot Plant Issues - Email: newsletter@club717.ca and Charlie will get back to you !!

NOVEMBER  IN  THE  GARDEN

There is still time to plant some spring flowering bulbs. You can tuck some in between shrubs, perennials , along walkways, or make big statement by mass planting in a larger flower bed. When purchasing bulbs, bigger is better, so look for firm plump bulbs with no mushy spots or mould on them.   Now is actually a good time to plant as the soil is getting cooler. Odd numbers usually look more natural, so clumps of 7, 9,11 would be good clumps. Clumps with 99 would be fabulous....I"m sure you get the picture. Most bulbs like a lot of sun. So a sight getting at least 5 or 6 hours per day, will suffice. Heavy soils can be detrimental to bulbs, so well drained soils, rockeries or soils with added sand and compost will help the bulbs to flourish.   And in the spring, when the foliage starts to die back after their colourful performance, let the leaves die back naturally, as they are making food for next years crop of flowers.   I find that planting bulbs between perennial plants is a good idea, because as the perennial grows after the bulb show it often covers over the dying bulb foliage.

And then there are leaves and leaves and leaves. I always talk about mulching your leaves with your lawnmower and then placing those shredded leaves in your garden around trees and shrubs. But if you have a tremendous amount of leaves you could start a big compost pile. The cheapest way to make a big compost pile is with snowfence. Drive some large metal stakes into the ground in an area where you think is suitable for a pile. You can make it square or round and the size depends on the amount of materials you have to compost. Leaves, garden clippings, prunings, grass clippings, your old hanging baskets, your pots of annual plantings, along with vegetable debris from the kitchen, can all be thrown in. Because leaves compress a lot in a short time, I would make the pile inside your snowfence at least two feet deep and then a a thin layer of garden soil, then add a new layer , then a thin layer of garden soil, so on and so forth.   The garden soil contains beneficial microbes and bacteria and bugs that help to break down the compost. You will probably have to wait for one year to use it, unless you start turning it over in the early spring and add it to your planting areas, or mulch with it.   The finer the material is that you add, the sooner it will compost, giving you a dark gritty soil like amendment to use in your garden.

This a a good time to turn some of your planters into Christmas planters. Just chop off all the vegetation on the top of your planter, leaving all the soil and roots intact. Then you can do some pruning of evergreens and colourful twigged plants from your garden. I like to mix up an assortment of branches, so 3 to 5 branches about one to two feet long, will make for a nice mix. So make some branches short. 1 foot and some longer, up to 2 feet. These are just guidelines and you can make things as big or small or as colourful as you like. I like to use Pine because of the long needles and its texture; blue Spruce for its blue colour; Yew because of its deep green and soft colour and sometimes I get some red berries on the branch. I have a corkscrew Hazel that has twisting branches, and red dogwood with red twigs. I use some of the longer evergreen branches on the edge of the pot, to hang out and cascade down. The reason you leave all those roots in the pot is so you can spear the bottom of the branch into the soil and it should hold because of all the roots that have meshed together. I place tall red branches in the middle with maybe 3 corkscrew branches and then fill in with whatever branches you have left.   If at this point you feel that it needs more , you can do some more clipping. Finish it off with ribbons or bows, or add some cones. This is your work of art for Christmas.

Hope your Halloween was frightening, ghoulish and yummy. But now that it's over, Christmas and winter is in your face. So prepare and enjoy your gardens, your friends and your families.

Till next time in the garden,

Charlie
