Taking the Lead - Pet Care Message - by Corry
Pet Insurance-Is it Worth the Cost?
Many clients ask me this question and the easiest way to decide is to ask yourself if you are a saver or a spender?
If you are a saver you probably already have an emergency fund or contribute to one on a monthly basis: so pet insurance probably isn't for you. By putting away $25, $50, or $100/month you will have saved from $4500-$12,000 over the lifetime of your pet. If your pet stays healthy, then you have a nice nest egg to do with what you want.
If you are a spender, you might benefit from having pet insurance as it forces you to save by paying premiums each month.
There are many things to consider when choosing pet insurance and these are just a few items you will want to explore.
What does basic and premium coverage consist of?
How much more would you be paying for a premium policy and is there a deductible or co-pay? Some policies require you to pay 20% of the costs, while the insurance company covers the other 80%. If your pet breaks their leg or has to have surgery are you prepared to pay from $600-$1000 extra.
Are there any limitations to the policy?
Will the policy cover complimentary services such as chiropractic and massage?
How old is your pet?
Do you have a pet with a pre-existing condition, such as diabetes or allergies?
Do you have a pet that may suffer from hereditary conditions such as hip dysphasia?
All of these factors come into play when an insurance company is deciding whether they will cover your pet and determining the premiums you pay.
Do your research and at the end of the day, do what is best for you and your pet.

Android Malware Found Stealing Texts, Intercepting Calls
The steady drumbeat of malware and spyware targeting the Android platform is continuing, this time with the emergence of a new variant of an Android Trojan that masquerades as a Google+ app and has the ability to not only record phone calls, but also to answer incoming calls and respond to remote commands that arrive via SMS.

The new piece of malware is known as ANDROIDOS_NICKISPY.C and has some powerful functionality. The most interesting feature the malicious app sports is its ability to intercept incoming calls and prevent the user of the infected device from even knowing that the call came in. Also, according to
researchers at Trend Micro, ANDROIDOS_NICKISPY.C has a predefined controller number that, when attached to incoming SMS messages, can be used to issue commands to the infected device.

 Greetings!
I received a ton of emails asking why people have not gotten their newsletter. It actually helps remind me that people actually read this thing.... :)
Honestly, I've had a real difficult time the past couple of months getting the details needed to get this out on time. Regardless of the 20th of the month deadline, I'm still chasing people for the info. I've been told that some changes have been made so I'm hoping to get things back on schedule.
You will notice that I don't have all the event poster JPEGS. There have been some last minute entertainment changes and issues. Check the website and I'll post them once they are made available.
You'll notice that I chose the Quote of the Month this time. Quite often I'm emailed jokes, pictures and quotes for the newsletter. This month I wanted to get an issue and personal rant out.
Why's are community so "Apathetic" ??? Over the past year I've become more involved in attending community fundraisers, support issues and general meetings to continue to maintain our rights.
It's so amazing to see how people don't show up to support their local LGBTQ organizations. If it were a back yard BBQ and you didn't get invited, there'd be hell to pay, but show up at a rally or just to support a community fundraiser is like pulling teeth. Keep in mind "YOU" might need this service or support one day. Without support the politicians will no longer be as willing to stand up for us on really important issues. Don't just get upset when it effects you, stand up for your neighbors and friends. It's taken years to get to where we are. It only takes one election to loose it. Don't let the same small group stand there alone. People get tired and need fresh faces to keep them inspired to keep the fight going !!
There are many things happening this month from the ScotiaBank Walk for Life to the Evening of Hope in October. Make a difference, show up, lend a hand, donate a buck or simply lend an ear to a person in need. There are many ways to support even if you can't affort to donate. Little things make a big difference. Don't be Apathetic.... Ok, rant over.
Changes to the Board at Club 717 - Unfortunately, one of our Members at Large has resigned due to heath reasons. Warren although not as well know to everyone served faithfully. Please keep him in your thoughts. Lance has moved to the Member at Large position while our previous president Danny has come back as interim Secretary until the October elections to lend a hand.
On a positive note..... Next month (October 30th) is our AGM at Club 717. It's time to THINK BACK !! Are you happy with the way things ran. The way people performed their elected duties...... This is a call to the members, it's time to make your voice heard. Save the date and plan to attend. It's your opportunity to nominate the person you feel is competent, mature and willing to step up and make a difference. Don't just feel you have to accept the status que. Do you have ideas and want to be part of an exciting team !! This is your chance, your Club !! Open to all members in good standing. Let's make the 2012 Board one for the record books !!
Make sure you check out the full line up of activities this month at the Club. Have a great month, Ed Newsletter Editor |
President's Message
ey Folks,
Our Board of Director's fundraiser is coming up, and I'm so scared performing for you guys... but it's for an amazing thing, and it's a good way to close the year for us. Raising money to redecorate Club 717, is probably about the only thing that I would do this for. Our goal is to raise about $10,000.00 in this two day fundraiser. If anyone is interested in helping us out, we really could use ALL the help we can get... everything from props to backup dancers... send Bianca an email if you're willing to help out each of the nights... you can always reach her at entertainment@club717.ca and tell her anything that you could help us with... it's a two day event, and we are hoping to make it a spectacular event that you'll never forget.
The colder weather is coming, but not before we got some GREAT new fans at the club. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed last month, but the club ended up getting about 15 degrees cooler once we got them working. It would have been nicer to get air conditioning but for a LOT larger of a cost. About $70,000.00 according to the two or three quotes that we got last year. It's not perfect, but it's drastically better.
We are always looking for volunteers at the club, whether it is working during bar hours, or behind the scene, we could always use more help. Without volunteers, we don't function. Email Kelly, our staffing director at staffing@club717.ca, and she'll answer any questions that you may have.
It's hard to believe that it's almost been a year that I've been president. October 30th 2011 is out Annual General Membership meeting, and the Board is up for re-election. It's hard to believe that it has come so quickly. Mark the day on your calendar, and we hope to see you there.
That's it from me for this month... until next month everyone,
Jason Allman president@club717.ca |

Treasurer's & Membership Report - by John D.

Dear Members and Patrons; I hope you are all enjoying the "dog days of summer." September is here, and hopefully we can still enjoy some nice weather although a tad cool to start the month. I am happy to report that even with the summer months being a typically slow time for the Club, we are doing well financially. All our major expenses have been paid, and we are now working towards the preparation for the AGM. I would like to thank Jay Ingram for completing the inventory of both refrigerators last Sunday night. I would also like to thank our book keeper Sharron White and Roy Miles who came to the Club on August 31st, and completed the remaining inventory. Everything went very smoothly, and now Sharron has all the figures to add together for our year end. I would also like to convey special thanks to Terry Bennett. Terry came to the Club last Thursday night, and meticulously cleaned the Drag Room. It's great to see that we have so many members who like to pitch in and keep the Club looking good. We have also sold a few "pro rated" memberships in August. Patrons are taking advantage of the lower rate to get memberships. They will more than get their money's worth for this year, and can then renew for $40.00 next year. The pro rated membership fee is now down to $25.00 if you purchase it in September. The entertainment committee has some great things coming up, so please pay close attention to the eblasts, newsletter and website. See you at the Club!!!! John

Dear Patrons of Club 717;
It has been a while since I have last been to Club 717, and I can say that I do miss it dearly. Things over the last couple of months have been extremely busy for me and I want to take this time to thank a couple people from Club 717 for giving me the push in the right direction.
To all the Kings and Queens at the club who have helped me there, to learn and to grow and learn new things. I want to express you all my sincere thank-you's because without your inspiration, I don't know where I would be today. I want to put a big thank you out there to the Board of Club 717, because they had given me the push that I needed to go to new places and explore and to gain more experience. I think with taking the advice that was given to me by the Board and the Kings and Queens, that I have been able to accomplish quite a lot over the last couple of months, and I am proud to say, that I will always be an Oshawa Queen and that I had the honor of doing my first show at Club 717. This Club will always be home to me and that never change. I have been very busy in Toronto, and I have been learning new things along the way. As of the 8th of August, I had entered Candice's Star Search and placed 1st, which now will allow me to compete in the Semi-Finals, which I am looking forward too. I have currently have been performing with the Empress of Toronto, Dusty Balfour and have been helping her out with raising funds for Ticot, and I am happy to say that it is an honor to be working with a wonderful person as Dusty and the rest of the Imperial Court of Toronto.
As of next month, I will be starting to sit down with Fellow Kings and Queens yet again to bring you the story of how they became who they are today and what made them decide to do drag. I am looking forward to coming back to Club 717 and performing again with my fellow drag kings and queens and I hope that you all have a wonderful month of September.
Hope to see you all soon Lots of Love

Some Changes at ACDR and in the Community
As of August 6th, 2011 I was offered and accepted the role of Manager of Education Services here at ACDR. Taking on this role was a major decision for me as I loved my job as the M2M Outreach Worker. I have been involved with the Gay equality and social justice movement since the early 1980's and involved directly with HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention since the late 1990's. This community and its overall health are near and dear to my heart and having direct involvement is important to me.
I finally decided that it might be best for our community if I stepped back from the M2M position and let a new face with new ideas and dedication take over the role. Afterall at 52, I am not getting any younger and someone else may have even better ideas and direction. In addition, by taking the Manager of Education Services position I will still be connected to the M2M and larger LGBTQ community as I will be facilitating the direction of all the outreach programs here at ACDR, which of course includes M2M Outreach. I will remain involved as the Co-Chair of the Durham LGBTQ Communities Involved Committee and I will work with the new M2M Outreach Worker to make sure that person continues to work towards building and improving our community within Durham Region.
Another change that will keep me involved in our community will take place this month on Sunday September 25th, when I will take over as facilitator of the Community Rainbow Christian Church. Over the summer it was decided by the membership and our former Pastor Doug Willoughby to change the format of the Church. Starting this month our services will change to a spiritual discussion service format, instead of the formal church service that we were holding. I, with the direction and assistance of the congregation, will be leading this new discussion format.
Now at CRCC we will be looking deeper into reclaiming our religious and spiritual connection which for many of us LGBTQ citizens has been damaged or at worse, taken away from us by many mainstream denominations. We will be talking a lot about this and looking at or working on how we can reclaim what is rightfully ours as children of our great Creator.
I hope many of you will come and participate with us. We will be holding the services as before at St. George's Anglican Church between Athol and Bagot streets on Centre St. South - Downtown Oshawa at 3PM on the fourth Sunday of the month. Service is in the small chapel entered from the Bagot Street side of the building.
Life is always fluid and ever changing. These changes are just a part of that fact. I see change as a positive and necessary part of improving and making our lives better. I hope you'll see these changes in the same way.
Regards, Mark Hammann - Manager, Education AIDS Committee of Durham Region

Prideline Durham is a new telephone helpline service with a focus on supporting the well-being of the LGBT community in Durham Region. In collaboration with several community partners (PFLAG Durham, Community Development Council of Durham and AIDS Committee Durham Region), Distress Centre Durham took the natural role of developing the programming for this service where those in the LGBT community who are experiencing life challenges and mental health distress, can turn to for non judgmental support from an empathetic person who can understand their unique concerns, encouraging them to meet goals and reach their full potential.

Good Morning Everyone,
Local youth in the Durham Region have come together to form the Immigrant and Newcomer Youth Advisory Committee (INYAC).
INYAC is a youth-run committee created to facilitate the integration of immigrant youth, aged 16-24, into the community by empowering them to utilize their voice. With funding from the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the support of the Local Diversity and Immigration Partnership Council, and the coordination of ambitious and talented youth in Durham Region, the INYAC aims to identify the needs of immigrant youth, in order to influence policies, attitudes and actions, which will enhance the experience of immigrant youth in the Durham Region. Four focus groups have been organized to gather feedback from immigrant and newcomer youth in the Durham Region about how they are adjusting. The INYAC will use this information to work towards enhancing Durham as a youth focused community.
Focus groups will be held in Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa and Whitby the week of August 22nd - 26th!
INYAC NEEDS YOUR HELP!
PLEASE PASS ON THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR COMMUNITY CONTACTS, AND INFORM IMMIGRANT AND NEWCOMER YOUTH YOU MAY KNOWM, IN ORDER TO HELP RECRUIT YOUTH TO ATTEND THESE FOCUS GROUPS
On behalf of the youth who are part of the INYAC, I would like to extend our deep appreciation for your support in this matter.
If you have any question please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, Meg

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN Although summer is starting to come to an end, you still need to be attentive to those hanging baskets and gardens if they are dry. So keep watering, weeding and dead heading. If some of your plants are no longer in good shape or showy, pull them out and put them in the compost. If you feel a need to replace them, mums, kale, pansies and asters are some good choices that will bring you into late fall. If you are starting to think about next spring, perhaps some tulips, crocus, daffodils or other bulbs , would fill the need for that pop of spring colour. September is definitely a time to rejuvenate your lawn, with a fertilizer application, some over seeding and mulching with topsoil or some fine grade of compost. I always figure on Halloween to be about the last cut for grass. If you have planted some of your houseplants outside for the summer. or have purchased plants like oleanders, fuchsias, geraniums, lantanas or some other smaller woody type tropicals, and you want to overwinter them, now is the time to dig them up and repot them, so that they can settle into their new pots (make new roots) before you bring them into your home, sometime in October. When I bring plants inside, I usually prune really hard. The less leaves on the plants, means there are less bugs that you bring in. Also spray the plants with two or three sprays of soapy water a few days apart before they come in. And it is important to provide as much light as possible. And because we are heading into winter, where days are short, plants naturally go into a rest period, where water requirements become very little. And no fertilizer is needed until next spring when the days are longer, and the plants are growing. Fall is actually a good time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Just keep them well watered until freeze up. If you have peonies, daylilies or iris, this is a good time to divide them, and plant the divisions throughout your garden. When you dig up a clump, you can cut it in half, or quarters with a sharp shovel and plant in other garden locations. Or give some to your neighbour. Taking pictures of your garden, is a way to keep track of what is in your garden. I always plant some new plants each year and then next spring or early summer, I sometimes wonder what is coming up in the garden now. I don't remember planting that there. But it all turns out to be good. I may have to move things around a bit, but it works out! Flowers in my garden right now are: roses. rose of sharon, hydrangeas, lamium, hosta, daylily, clematis, sunflower, pink turtleheads, garlic chives, honeysuckle vine, porcelian vine, rudbeckia, tansy, perennial geranium, agastache - golden jubilee, thrift and a good variety of annuals too. I am going to plant some red tulips this year, as the garden is very yellow in the spring. And the privacy hedge will need at least two more trims before winter. And the fall colours will soon be here!! And the bird feeder is a great source of entertainment. The chick-a -dees actually chase the hummingbirds away from the feeder, and the hummingbirds don't even eat the seeds. Till next time in the garden, Charlie Plant Expert & Newsletter Columnist charlie.samms@gmail.com |
