Taking the Lead - Pet Care Message - by Corry
Q: A friend nearly lost her dog to bloat. I was wondering if you could explain what bloat is and how you can prevent it..
A: Great question. Bloat is a very serious problem that generally occurs with large to giant breeds. The cause is unknown but some vets believe that there may be a link with feeding large meals of dry food and the speed with which the dog eats the food.
The symptoms will generally appear a few hours after eating and the stomach swells up with gas and feels very tight. You will usually see almost a foaming of the mouth due to excess saliva production, drooling, restlessness, and discomfort. The dogs will try to vomit and eat excessive amounts of grass.
You do need to get medical attention immediately, as the increased pressure on the stomach can cause fluids to leak; this leads to dehydration, shock, and possibly death. The other complication involves the twisting of the stomach, which can result in a complete blockage. Surgery is required to correct.
If you live far away from your vet, you can try giving your dog fresh raw cabbage juice (1-2 oz) to give you more time. Cabbage juice is only effective at the first sign of bloat. There are many homeopathic remedies that can help, but you need to have them on hand. Pulsatilla 30C is generally the first remedy to try. Give 3 crushed pellets every 30 minutes for 3 treatments.
To prevent bloat, you need to feed smaller meals and slow down the gulping of food.
There are specially designed bowls or you can make your own by putting obstacles such as large kongs or balls in the middle of the dish.
Be prepared and know what to look for and you can save your dog's life.

ThreatPost -

Researchers have found a new piece of malware that's designed to attack the Mac OS X platform, an occurrence that's rare enough still that each new discovery is noted separately.
The new Trojan is known as the Black Hole RAT (remote administration tool) and is capable of giving a remote attacker virtually complete control of an infected machine. It's not clear right now whether the tool includes any exploits for OS X to help attackers install it on Macs, but in many cases malware tools like Black Hole are distributed via download sites and or torrent sites, as researchers at Sophos noted.
The Black Hole RAT seems to be in beta form right now, and has some fairly rudimentary capabilities, according to an analysis by Meths Cebrian Ferrer, a researcher in Australia who follows Mac malware. The tool enables the attacker to remotely shut down an infected machine, display a full-screen message that gives the user no choice but to reboot the computer, request admin privileges through a fake dialog box or open the user's browser. |

President's Message
ey Folks,
president@club717.ca
Happy summer! I hope you all are enjoying time off, or weekend getaways! I know I have been enjoying that weather, I just wish I had a backyard and a BBQ to enjoy it that much more.
We have been planning a busy summer for you guys to enjoy (the ones that don't manage to get away every weekend that is) you should come check it out, including a two day special event never done before at Club 717. The Board of Directors will be doing a special edition, two day fundraiser. All of the board will be involved one way or another... here is a picture from the last time I dressed up and took the 4 hour getting transformed into another gender.

I was kind of disappointed that no members showed up for the General Membership Meeting. We had to change the date because of the Civic Holiday, and we gave almost a months' notice... To avoid that for the next one, we have an Annual General Membership Meeting October 30th 2011, at 2:00 PM. I hope to see any many members as possible, as there will be some changes proposed to the membership. We will be sending out a detailed agenda prior to the meeting.
Thanks everyone to all those people who helped to tried to help with the Toronto Pride Parade, and a special thank you to Gerard, and his Husband Carlos, as well as Terry AKA Lauren Lovelace.
Here is a recipe for an amazing punch i had this summer:
The Midori Berry Bliss is a spirited, flavourful punch that is perfect for summer parties. Its bright green color adds flair to any festivity, and the mix of melon, vanilla, raspberry, and pineapple is a taste that will please any palate. If you're going to freeze an ice ring that fits inside your punch bowl, you may also want to add a few strawberries and other seasonal berries to the water for a fun, floating effect.

Ingredients:
1.5 parts Melon Liqueur
1 part Vanilla Vodka
1/2 part Raspberry Infusions
Splash of Pineapple juice
Splash of soda water
Garnish: Strawberry slices
Preparation:
Fill a punch bowl half way with ice.
Add Melon, Vanilla Vodka, Raspberry Infusions, pineapple juice and a splash of soda water.
Garnish with strawberry slices.
This will be short and sweet, until next month everyone,
Jason Allman |

Membership Report - by John D.

Dear Patrons of Club 717; Hi All I hope you are all enjoying your summer. We can't complain about the amazing weather.
I would like to clear up the misunderstanding regarding the last GGM. The July newsletter announced the change in date from July 31st back to July 24th, and the weekly eblasts also gave the same reminder.
We had our monthly Board meeting on July 24th, and waited until well past 4:00 PM to make sure no member made an attempt to attend only to find "closed doors". There was only one member who showed up after 4:00 PM, and if any member showed up on July 31st, there have been no calls or emails to complain. I currently have requests for the last three month financials from two members. If any other member wishes a copy, please email me, and I will make sure you get a copy.
We have had several members take advantage of the "pro rated" memberships. A pro rated membership can now be purchased for $30.00. Please pay close attention to all the events that are planned at the Club. The newsletter and weekly eblasts, plus the website are designed to keep you informed, so you can attend the special events that are planned for you to enjoy.I want to remind everyone that pro rated memberships can now be purchased.
This new system proved to work well last year, so hopefully those that have put off getting memberships will now come forward. Also keep in mind, if you are submitting your name to be a volunteer at the Club, you must be a paid member. Looking forward to seeing you the Club!! Regards John D. treasurer@club717.ca and membership@club717.ca

Durham Syphilis Rates Among M2M are Among the Highest in Ontario
In June Ontario's GMSH (Gay Men's Sexual Health Alliance) meeting featured a presentation from the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care on the substantial increases in syphilis infections among M2M. Between 2008 and 2010 84% of new infections have been among M2M in Ontario. As you can see by the Ministry of Health chart below Durham region ranked among the top six regions with reported syphilis cases in the province.
 | | Click here for larger Map |
In order to protect ourselves and each other we all need to know more about syphilis and how to prevent its spread, so I am sharing the following information to help. This information comes from the "Attack of the Cursed Syphilis Campaign" produced by the AIDS Committee of Toronto last year.
What Is Syphilis?
It's a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria that attacks the body in three stages. You may have syphilis and not know it. Some people develop visible symptoms of the syphilis infection, but others don't.
Stage One:
The first signs of syphilis surface anywhere from 10 to 90 days after exposure. You may notice painless sores on your penis, near your anus, or in your throat. Trans guys may notice painless sores in your frontal genital area. The sores will go away after 3 to 6 weeks. The syphilis, however won't.
Stage Two:
4 to 10 weeks after the sores, you may notice a red rash on your chest, palms, genitals, or the soles of your feet. Muscle and joint pain, fever and patchy hair loss are also common in stage two. These symptoms can go away without treatment, but again, the syphilis won't.
Stage Three:
The sores and rashes will be gone but the syphilis will live on. Over time the bacteria will attack your body causing serious damage to your brain, heart, eyes and bones. This process occurs over a 10 to 30 year period.
HIV and Syphilis
If you've got HIV, syphilis can hit you harder and faster, and may also be more difficult to treat. If you've got syphilis, you're more likely to get HIV or pass it on to someone if you have unsafe sex.
How It's Spread
Syphilis is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact including unprotected anal, oral, and for some trans guys frontal genital sex. You can also get syphilis by sharing drug equipment. Trans guys should take note that sharing needles to inject hormones is also considered a high risk activity.
Getting Tested
A simple blood test can tell you if you've got it.
Can It Be Cured?
If it's caught early, syphilis can be treated with antibiotics. Get Treated!
How To Protect Yourself
Always use condoms when having sex. They're not foolproof, but they're better than nothing. Using a condom when you have oral sex can also provide protection. For sex with trans guys, dental dams or cutting a condom up the side can be used as barriers. Don't share drug paraphernalia. Get tested for syphilis on a regular basis. Even if you've had syphilis before, you can get it again.
Telling Someone They May Have Syphilis
If you think you've passed syphilis onto someone but don't know how to break the news to them, contact your local public health department. They'll get in touch with the person for you, but won't disclose your identity. You can also send them an anonymous e-card by visiting inspot.org.
Where To Get Tested
Your family doctor, the sexual health clinics in Durham or contact the AIDS and Sexual Health Info-line 1-800-668-2437. French: 1-800-267-7432.
Where To Get FREE Condoms and Info
AIDS Committee of Durham Region - 22 King Street West Oshawa 2nd Floor (above Coffee Culture) Phone: 905-576-1445 or at one of our safer sex distribution sites.

A Message from a reader - Enjoy

Leviticus - what to do! In her radio show, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.
The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination .... End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing oder for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a deadpig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your adoring fan,
James M Kauffman, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus, Dept. Of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education University of Virginia

Gay Librarian Strikes again!
Sightings of the Gay Librarian were reported at the recent Durham Pride Information Fair and BBQ. She was spotted wearing lavender, and had a number of LGBTQ books and movies with her. It is in this reporter's opinion that she is attempting to entice the community into coming to her library. The Pickering Public Library currently employs this book babe, and has stated openly that it supports her endeavours to make EVERYONE welcome at PPL. While libraries are typically where you find women wearing cardigans, sensible shoes and tweed (not to be confused with the stereotypical lesbian wearing sensible shoes and plaid), things have changed. So beware of this librarian, or you just might find yourself coming to her library to check out the most recent Ivan E. Coyote book, videogame, iPod audiobook, or Rae Spoon cd.

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
AUGUST IN THE GARDEN Although today is probably one of the hottest days of the season, I am starting to think about fall and even my garden plans for 2012. I recently came across an article about fall planters, and thought it to be a little early but when I started to think about it, I thought planning ahead is a good thing. So here are some ideas about creating a planter for fall / halloween / thanksgiving. Some other terms that are somewhat new to me in the last couple of years are SPILLERS, THRILLERS AND FILLERS. And these are used for planters, hanging baskets and even in flower beds. I like to use some perennials in planters as they are more interesting, but some tough annuals will also fill the bill. So here are some examples. PERENNIAL THRILLERS - Ornamental grasses as Juncus, Green Pennisetum, Blue fescue, small shrubs either evergreen or deciduous PERENNIAL FILLERS - JAPANESE painted ferns. Lambs ears (silver foliage) , Hens and chicks, fall pansies, mini roses, mums, asters HEUCHERAS (available from reds to golds) PERENNIAL SPILLERS - CREEPING JENNY, English ivy, Lamium ANNUAL THRILLERS - KALE DINOSAUR, KALE REDBOR , these two kales are tall and can withstand frost, FLOWERING KALE- USUALLY has a colourful centre of red / pink / or white, mums, asters, gerberas, red pennisetum ANNUAL FILLERS -snapdragons, dusty miller, helichrysum, gaillardia, crotons, polka dot plants ANNUAL SPILLERS - ENGLISH IVY, Plectranthus, vinca major, ivy geranium, Because you are doing a fall planting, the plants need to be packed in or tightly planted because they are not going to grow too much. And whatever you decide or like in the way of plants is alright, because it expresses the likes of the planter(gardener). And the reason that I am suggesting this now, is because you may have many of these plants in your garden, that could be lifted and planted into your fall planter or basket. If you choose to use perennials in your planter, After Halloween, I would dismantle the planter and plant those perennials in the garden so that you can enjoy them next year. And to add some whimsy to the planter , you can purchase some gourds or small pumpkins, and add them to the planters. I would use long wooden skewers, like the ones you use for bar-b-que, shish-ca- bob. Pierce the gourd or small pumpkin with the skewer, and then place it into the planter in a space that needs to be filled. Odd numbers work best, like 1, 3 or 5. And if you need more height or interest in your planter, you can add some twisted branches into the middle , or off to the side. And depending where you place this planter, you could surround it with some various sized pumpkins in different colours, to create your own individual look. Your imagination and combinations will create a work of art. Also if you have an annual planter that is half dead, you can remove the dead or plants that do not perform and pump it up with some of the fall plants, rather than discard it. Also in August, Late August is a great time to rejuvinate your lawn. Temperatures are cooler at night, and we should start to get some rain. When I spot seed, I mix a handful of seed to 3 handfuls of potting mix(which is mostly peat moss). Throw this down on those bare or thin spots, and keep it watered for 10 days. Or you could use a spreader to broadcast seed over the entire lawn, and then spread a potting mix or peat moss over the lawn, rake it in, and then keep it watered for 10 days. Also if you want to expand your garden, planting trees , shrubs and perennials now is an opportune time. Prices may be better and there is still time for them to root in before winter. Just keep everything you plant , well watered until freeze up. You may also start to see spring bulbs in the garden centres . By adding spring bulbs to your garden, you can be adding a lot of early spring colour to your garden that comes back every year. Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus, Scilla and Hyacinths will add early colour and scent to your garden. But right now, you have to keep watering, dead heading, pruning and weeding those gardens, to keep them going and looking good. Also Late August is a good time to CRITIQUE YOUR GARDENS. WHAT do you like about your garden; what do you dislike about your garden; what would you change; what could you add or what could you remove? Walk around your garden with a cocktail or a glass of wine and ponder .. Happy gardening!! Till next time in the garden, Charlie Plant Expert & Newsletter Columnist charlie.samms@gmail.com |
Something to Say - by Savanaugh
My apologies to all my adoring fans and enemies who for whatever reason find themselves seeking out my column every month. I ly understand btw.... it is like that train wreck that you just can't keep your eyes off!!!! Last month was insanely busy.... Sav's twat found herself everywhere from performing a bar in Kitchener to yes..... performing at a local camp. Ya - Sav was dressed to the nines in the bush!! No dresses for Sav for the month of August - this girl is taking a month off to enjoy the sun and cruising areas of Southern Ontario. Will be all rested for the start of September where the calendar is very quickly filling up once again.
I had a ton of topics I wanted to raise this month - everywhere from continuing to support our LGBTQ youth, the HUGE need to develop resources and support for our Trans community, and general summer cruising etiquette (Sav know a thing or two about hiding in the bushes from cops and dealing with trolls who mis-represent themselves on cruising sites!) Instead, I am finding myself giving a lot of thought to what should really be a rather unimportant event in the larger scheme of life... but very pressing for me.
Social media had managed to make a huge musical hit out of what should be a very serious topic. I remember when hearing the song the first time, thinking to myself: "Wait a minute, this just seems wrong." The pressing lyric of the song: "Tried to make me to go re-hab and I said No, No, NO." It became a massive hit and possibly an anthem song for the decade. Drag queens were performing it with alcohol and drug bottles in hand, children were singing it in the backseat of cars on those long vacation drives with parents, and social media was recording every move of the artist as she continued her journey of self-destruction. Grammy awards were nominated and won over a song that essentially was a poignant cry for help. The entire Back to Black album as brilliant as it was, if listened to carefully gave every warning sign of the eventual demise of the artist. We essential revelled and celebrated a person's destructive path and demise. We eagerly searched U-tube to watch the heart-breaking performances as the artist struggled to remember lyrics or remain on her feet through a song. We hailed her brilliance and some even suggested that it was in fact her drug and alcohol addiction that gave her the musical brilliance. Could you imagine, the only thing in your life that you are really good at, being linked and attributed to your worse vice that is being used to self-medicate? Your entire worth to society is the creative genius that comes out of your pain and anguish.
So there we were, singing along in the car, mocking in performances, searching websites for the comedic relief of her chaos, reading the tabloids, back-up singer and musicians continuing to play during life concerts seemingly oblivious to their lead singer and executives pulling in the dollars - all while a life was fading before them. Shame on us all!
Take a moment and think about how we all contributed in some small way. Think about the ways we enable people in our own lives to continue the path of self-destructive behaviour. We all know people who are escaping through over-consumption. We laugh it off, we call it letting off steam, they are the wild ones, the life of the party, they are our source of entertainment. Sometimes we join them for small bouts of over-indulgence, but then we return to our organized worlds while their chaos continues on a daily basis. We keep it up and soon enough the candle of a close friend will blow out and it WILL be our fault - but we'll be humming that not so funny chorus: "tried to make them go to rehab but they said no, no, no."
