Massage for Sports
Massage Therapy has become a necessary ingredient for a complete workout. More and more people are realizing that a complete workout routine includes not only the exercise itself, but also caring for the wear-and-tear and minor injuries that naturally occur with strenuous movement. The physiological and psychological benefits of massage make it an ideal complement to a total conditioning program. Anyone who routinely stretches their physical limits through movement such as running, cycling, hiking, swimming, dancing, tennis and other racquet sports, strength training and aerobics can benefit from a massage. There are others who do strenuous activities in a day that is not normally classified as exercise. Examples are mothers with small children, gardeners, and others who use their bodies strenuously in their work. Incorporating massage in your conditioning program has many benefits. It helps you get into good shape faster, and with less stiffness and soreness. It helps you recover faster from heavy workouts, and relieves conditions which may cause injury.
Massage Therapy helps the body recover from the stresses of exercise. The benefits of massage include improved circulation, muscle relaxation, relief from soreness and stiffness, better flexibility, and less potential for future injury.

President's Message
ey Folks,
Happy Pride! I hope everyone had as much fun as we did with the Durham Pride Week!!! We were open all week for Durham Pride Week, and it was great seeing everyone who came to support us!
I would like to do some thanks here for all those people who helped. Donny, Bianca, Tammy and Bob; this was our pride week team, along with me. We put a lot of effort into all the decorating, last minute shopping and most of the behind the scene stuff... Thank you guys for making Pride Durham Week 2011 a success for Club 717, and also thank you to everyone who came to support all of the events! Also, I'd like to give a HUGE thank you to Pride Durham for all of your hard work planning Durham's First ever Pride WEEK and parade!!! This historical event will be remembered and built on for years to come.
Do you remember your first pride celebrations? I do... barely... hahaha you want to share your first pride story with us in the next newsletter, or some pictures from the first year or over the years at pride?
Speaking of over the years... I've been asked to do a few shows here at Club 717 over the years, but have always said no... That will be changing... The Board will be working with some other performers and will be involved with a two day fundraising event. Our goal is to raise some money to help redecorate Club 717...
The dates to save will be September 30th 2011 and October 1st 2011. These events will be an event you won't want to miss, and a fundraising show like no other you've ever seen.
Club 717 sends congratulations to the winner's of the Inspire Awards:
· LGBTQ Person of the Year and Pride co Grand Marshal Michael Bach
· LGBTQ Youth of the Year and Pride co Grand Marshal Leanne Iskander
· LGBTQ Positive Business of the Year and co Pride Honoured Group Sacred Quest
· Inspiring Community Organization of the Year and co Pride Honoured Group Fife House
Also, congratulations to everyone who was nominated, what a huge honour! From what I heard that night was an amazing night, paying respect back to the community for all their hard work, by working together to make society a better place... one person at a time.

Treasurer & Membership Report - by John D.

Dear Patrons of Club 717; I am very happy to report that the Club is doing well financially. June is a big month for us with expenses for insurances, and all the Pride festivities. We have ended the month with a secure bank balance, and I want to Thank all those who donated their time and money to the various fundraisers, 50/50 draws and raffles. These all join together to keep us in a healthy financial position.
We have a great line up of entertainment and fundraisers scheduled for the summer months, so I hope that you all continue to support our functions. We often don't appreciate the hard work that goes in to organizing these events.
As of June 30th, we have 95 members and 12 honorary members. I want to remind everyone that pro rated memberships can now be purchased. One has already been sold this month. This new system proved to work well last year, so hopefully those that have put off getting memberships will now come forward. Also keep in mind, if you are submitting your name to be a volunteer at the Club, you must be a paid member. Looking forward to seeing you the Club!! Regards John D. treasurer@club717.ca and membership@club717.ca |
A Message from the VP - Bob
It was my honour to represent Club 717 along with Bianca at the Inspire Awards held at Casa Loma in Toronto last month. Club 717 is one of the Durham Region's contributing partners of the Annual Inspire Awards along with Pride Durham and PFLAG Durham.
Congratulations to Antione Elhashem and his committee for staging an important and elegant evening honouring individuals for their contributions to the LGBT community in the GTA. It was gratifying to see such a large contingent of people from the Durham Region attend the gala and it was especially satisfying to see that 4 of the 12 individuals nominated for Person of the Year, one of the two nominated for Youth of the Year and 2 of the 4 nominated for Business of the Year were all from the Durham Region. They all did us proud and congratulations to them for their nominations and contributions to OUR community.
Club 717's involvement in the Inspire Awards offers us great exposure to the GTA community and we are thankful to Inspired Media Inc. for allowing us to be part of it. We look forward to seeing all our nominees lead the Toronto Pride Parade on the first weekend of July and we also look forward to being an important part of the Inspire Awards for 2012.
The Club has seen some great events over the past few weeks and my thanks to all who contributed to making our patrons and members welcome.
I was privileged to be able to work the Club 717 booth at the Family event at Heydenshore Pavilion during Durham Pride Week and enjoyed it immensely. Durham Region's first Pride Parade was a resounding success and congratulations to Pride Durham for all their hard work to make it such. It was great to see all the parade goers flock back to the club after the parade on the Sunday afternoon.
I'm happy to see more and more new faces coming to the club and that bodes well for our future. The Board of Directors have some great ideas on improving the atmosphere at Club 717 over the next few months to insure that Club 717 is THE place to be for the LGBT community. One thing we are in need of is more dedicated members to step up to the plate to help out as voluntary staff. Please email Kelly our Staffing Director at staffing@club717.ca if you are willing to put in a few hours a month to help us out. It will give you a good feeling to know that you helped us out to make Club 717 a better place for us all by doing your part. We all work better when we work as a TEAM.
Hope all our members have a safe and happy summer and thanks again for your wonderful support of Club 717.
Bob

AIDS Committee of Durham Region -
Pride In Pride Durham and Yes, Together It Does Get Better!
By Mark Hammann - M2M Outreach Worker
AIDS Committee of Durham Region
Wow, what an amazing Pride we had this year in Durham! It was such an amazing week here in our little corner of the GTA. I attended a number of events and the few I could not attend; I tried to make sure someone from ACDR was there. Seeing the representation from local officials at the Gala, Saturdays Pride Festival and the Inaugural parade was a major highlight for me. Just a year or two ago this year's Pride in Durham would have seemed almost impossible to imagine. Our community has come so far and at such a rapid pace. This year's Pride motto, "Together It Gets Better" was right on the mark! More than a motto, it is so very true that when we come together our lives become better and our community (the whole community, not just our LGBTQ community) becomes a better, safer and happier place for everyone to live and grow.
We now have momentum and we need to keep it going. From the postings I've seen online and from people I've met around the area, it is clear that next year's parade will be even bigger and the crowd along the route larger. This being the first Pride parade ever in Durham, I believe, that a substantial number of folks stayed away because either they didn't know what to expect or they felt few people would show up. Among those that I've spoken with who did not attend, they expressed disappointment that they missed it. They'll be there next year, I am sure of that. Beyond just attending the parade and events, as time goes by more and more of our LGBTQ members (both known and unknown to us currently) will start coming forth to participate and assist. We'll see more and more local politicians, municipal officials and straight allies showing up and more importantly, standing with us. It will only get better.
Thanks for the hard work of Kim, Diane, John, Ed, Antoine, David, Mia and everyone with Pride Durham Committee. Kudos must also go to Jayme Harper, the Durham LGBTQ Communities Involved Committee, Community Development Council Durham, Prideline Durham, PFLAG Durham and the others working behind the scene over the past couple of years. All have brought our community together and helped aid in the wonderful results we are seeing come to life and into our lives.
This year I hope you all feel the Pride like I do, and yes, Together It Does Get Better! |
A Message from the Entertainment Team

A Message from Pride Durham
 Pride Durham Thanks You !!
I want to send a sincere message of Thanks to all who volunteered their time and talents to this year's Pride Durham events.
As you know, we had a complete week of activities and each one was supported by our commuity.
The Youth Dance kicked off the week at Club 717 and from the success of this event, we are having another one !! Kudos to those that made it possible.
The flag raising at the various locations throughout Durham Region went well. Hopefully next year, we will have the full support of the entire Region. We need more people to show up at these events to remind the politicians that this is important !!
Thank you to Club 717 !! They were open all week and people enjoyed having a place to go to at the end of the events. It was well received and gives us lots of options to grow it for next year.
The Family event at "Chuck E Cheese" was tremendous. The staff received us with open arms and made everyone feel so comfortable. I know from all those that attended it, they really enjoyed the event !!
The Inaugural Gala dinner at Mojo Vino's on the Wednesday was also a success. Many thanks to the staff for the delicious food and great hospitality. We were overwelmed by the many politicians and community partners that came to support us. We know it was a pricey event and your contributions and support means a lot to us. Your donations have allowed us to continue to grow the organization and expand Pride !!
The Speakers event at UOIT on the Thursday was a real "HIT" !! Reverend Brent Hawkes and Shawn Proux provided the audience with a provacative talk on why we still need to celebrate our pride. There were many questions and opinions asked of each of them after their presentations. I cannot begin to express our sincere thanks to both of them for speaking at the event. Thank you very much to Barb and UOIT for hosting the event !! you were amazing !!
The annual Pride Fundraising show and dance at Club 717 was beyond expectation. There were many patrons that expressed the fact that they haven't ever watched a show at the Club with that much continuous energy. The performers put their entire souls into their numbers. The patrons participated in all the raffles and fundraisers to make the evening a great success. Many thanks to all those that decorated the Club and worked that night. It was really appreciated !!
Heydenshore was one busy spot on Saturday. The crowd was greeted by the Durham Regional Police car decorated for Pride and the many vendors that had booths for their business & organizations. The vendors were very pleased with the ever increasing turnout !! Thank you to all those that set up the tables for the daytime event and then rushed to complete the change over for the evening festivities !! Savanaugh and Ivy not only performed but hosted the Lady Gaga and Bette Middler impersonators. Thanks to the other performers who all made the night go smoothly. Thank you to Terry for rounding up ALL the prizes !! you really took on the challenge and did an amazing job !! Last but not least.... the exceptional team from Mike's Music Machine and Puzzler Productions. Mike, Benn and Thomas worked tirelessly before everyone arrived and were the last to leave. Thank you so much for your professionalism and dedication to the community !!
PFLAG started the Sunday event with their breakfast, which gave extra fuel to those that participated in our Inaugural Pride Parade. This was a huge success could not have happened without the efforts of our Parade Coordinator and Pride Committee member Kim Etherington. Kim you out did yourself and helped make Pride History in Durham, Thank you !!
The after party at Club 717 was amazing and was great to see many many new faces. The celebrations continued for several more hours.
The week was officially concluded with the appreciation buffet at the New Globe Restaurant for the registered volunteers that helped throughout the week.
We have once again proven that our community is strong and wants to be recognized and heard throughout the entire Durahm Region. We will only strive to make next year even bigger and better.
Once again........ MANY THANKS TO ALL THAT MADE THIS POSSIBLE !!!
To our Presenting Sponsors and Financial supporters. We've used your funds wisely and put them to good use in the community. Without your support and vision for the community, we could not have accomplised our goals !!
So to those of you reading this, please make note of the names below for they are truely supportive companies in Durham and deserve our patrontage !!

Prideline Durham is a new telephone helpline service with a focus on supporting the well-being of the LGBT community in Durham Region. In collaboration with several community partners (PFLAG Durham, Community Development Council of Durham and AIDS Committee Durham Region), Distress Centre Durham took the natural role of developing the programming for this service where those in the LGBT community who are experiencing life challenges and mental health distress, can turn to for non judgmental support from an empathetic person who can understand their unique concerns, encouraging them to meet goals and reach their full potential.

Gay Librarian Strikes again!
Sightings of the Gay Librarian were reported at the recent Durham Pride Information Fair and BBQ. She was spotted wearing lavender, and had a number of LGBTQ books and movies with her. It is in this reporter's opinion that she is attempting to entice the community into coming to her library. The Pickering Public Library currently employs this book babe, and has stated openly that it supports her endeavours to make EVERYONE welcome at PPL. While libraries are typically where you find women wearing cardigans, sensible shoes and tweed (not to be confused with the stereotypical lesbian wearing sensible shoes and plaid), things have changed. So beware of this librarian, or you just might find yourself coming to her library to check out the most recent Ivan E. Coyote book, videogame, iPod audiobook, or Rae Spoon cd.

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
JULY IN THE GARDEN By now most of you have planted more than you really wanted to. But the plant sales have started and there is still time to add to your garden. Just remember to keep things well watered, especially on those really hot days. So July brings what I call the maintenance of the garden. Watering, weeding, fertilizing, deadheading, which is the removal of spent flowers, which encourages more flower, and the pruning of hedges and shrubs, and of course the maintenance of your lawn. Watering is probably one the most needed for hanging baskets and pots and for all the newly planted material in your garden. Fertilizing on a regular basis, helps to keep plants in good vigour. And what would the world be without weeds? I remove large weeds a couple of times per week. But it is time to get more thorough, and go through the whole garden and remove them all by pulling them out and cultivating, which gets rid of those tiny weed seedlings. Some of the perennials are finishing and need to be cut back or deadheaded. I am starting to deadhead roses, tulips, daffodils and cut back perennials that have finished their flowering and are now overcrowding and flopping over. And by cutting some of these back, there is a chance to get a second later bloom. My privacy hedge gets trimmed monthly, and is due for its second clipping the first week of July. By clipping my cedar hedge mid-July, Once per year is enough. My lilac was starting to reach 8 or 9 feet in height, and I cut it back after it finished blooming to about four feet. That was a matter of choice, not a requirement. Because there are a lot of plants in the garden, I need to prune things back to a manageable size so the garden is not so overwhelming and overgrown. Pruning keeps the garden in scale, plus makes it neat and tidy. By pruning the larger shrubs back, it creates more room for the neighbouring plants to perform. Once you have thoroughly weeded the garden you can mulch around the plants to help keep the weeds down and to help conserve moisture. Also as the mulch slowly breaks down it adds organic matter to your soil. And keep an open eye for those pesky bugs. I have been hand removing the red lily beetles and throwing them on a patio stone and stepping on them. There are no sprays or chemicals on the market that will control them. Soap sprays will take care of aphids and whiteflies. If I have a heavily infested plant, I prune it back severely or just get rid of it. But there are chemicals available at your garden centre for the control of bugs. I had an area beside the garage that I needed to fill in, as my neighbour put up a new fence. So I split my hostas and filled in the whole area. This will keep the weeds down once it fills in. This was a low maintenance solution for that situation. And after you do all those gardening chores, you can sit back with a cocktail in hand and enjoy your garden of EDEN. SO ENJOY THE SUMMER, AND YOUR EVER CHANGING GARDEN AS IT CHANGES THROUGH THE SEASONS. Happy gardening!! Till next time in the garden, Charlie Plant Expert & Newsletter Columnist charlie.samms@gmail.com |
