Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.

Got Plant Issues? - by CharlieGot Plant Issues - Email: newsletter@club717.ca and Charlie will get back to you !!

JUNE IN THE GARDEN

I recently did a talk to about 50 seniors on container gardening last week, at that was their request. This will be a short article, however, it will be informative.

Everybody  buys  hanging  baskets at their local grocery store or garden centre.  By mid summer, a lot of these baskets are composted or thrown in the garbage because  they do not perform.  Almost all baskets are grown in a soil less mix  (peatmoss, vermiculite , perlite, and maybe some trace of fertilizer.)  In order for plants to grow, they need food.  So you need to water with a watering can with one teaspoon of fertilizer per gallon of water.  This is half strength solution, so use it every time you water, and the plants should flower.  Baskets and pots  are also demanding for water.  At home my baskets and pots get about a half of a day of sunshine, and in the heat of summer, I am watering every two days.  I can usually tell by the weight of the basket, if it needs water.  If its light in weight it needs water.  Also when the plants are wilting, that's another tell tale sign.   I always tell people who purchase a 10 inch hanging basket to also purchase a basket or pot that is larger;  a 14 to 20 inch, into which you can repot the basket that you purchased.

You can buy   soiless mixes  that have greater  water holding  capacity.  Mix about one cup of slow release flower fertilizer per bag of the soil, which is usually  about 30 litres of soil.  Also wet the soil mix before you use it, as it can be difficult to get it wet once you have planted into it.  Also never plant a dry plant, in any situation.   Water the plants that you are going to plant today, then plant them tomorrow, into  moist soil and then water thoroughly after planting.

When planting baskets or pots, I like to work with at least 3 different plants.  Tall one for the middle,  geraniums, or ornamental grass;  shorter bushier plants surrounding  the tall one, begonias, marigolds, coleus and some trailing plants around the edge as ivy, trailing petunias.  It's what catches your eye when you go shopping.   I like to keep a pot of  mixed herbs near the house for easy picking.

Now that summer has finally kicked in, get your plants in, remember to water and fertilize on a regular basis and enjoy.  Get creative with your plant choices and try something new.

Happy gardening!!

Till next time in the garden,

Charlie

H

 ey Folks,

Over the next couple of months I am going to be doing a couple of history pieces leading up to our 25th year anniversary. I need your help in making this happen. I have only been around for so many of these 25 years... So if you have any pictures or anything that you would like to feature in the upcoming newsletter articles, please email it to me at president@club717.ca.

Club 717 has a long and prosperous history in Durham Region. Club 717 began almost 25 years ago and has grown substantially into the dynamic establishment you see today. Club 717 as it's now known, is actually the Durham Alliance Association Social Club (DAASC). Club 717/DAASC is a not-for-profit organization providing a positive safe gay LGBT(TIQQ2SA(Sorry if I forgot anybody) community atmosphere where you can enjoy great music, reasonably priced drinks and friends). Whether you're new to Oshawa or the Durham Region, or simply looking for an alternative to big city clubbing, you will always find Club 717 is the place to be east of the city.

Club 717 is located in Oshawa, and offers a variety of services and entertainment. They are available through the week for private functions such as weddings, meetings and community fundraisers. However, we are best known for our local talents and entertainment.

Thursday is Pub Night, also known as "Thirsty Thursday's" by the regulars, where the LGBT community gather to relax, socialize and enjoy Club 717's Dollar Beers, $10 Pitchers and $3.50 Bar rail mixed drinks,  Free WiFI/Hot Spot and free pool. Whether you're just looking for an early weekend break or to finishing your college homework, Thursday night doesn't have to be boring.  Friday's feature our local impersonating performances followed by an electrifying club atmosphere. Club 717 regularly surprises our Friday patrons with guest performances from some of the industry's best know performers. Saturday is our Dance and Special Function's night. Saturday's range from high energy dance music by our house DJ's to group activities such as: Ladies Night, Men's Night, and various fundraisers.

Club 717 regularly hosts fundraisers to support our community. Watch our activities calendar for details. Club 717 is proud to host the monthly ACDR Fundraiser Dances. These dances / fundraisers go to support this amazing local group that offers help to many people in our community.

The Board of Directors of Club 717 is a volunteer committee that is elected by our paid members to operate the establishment. The general staffing, DJ's, bar staff are also volunteers and work hard so that their patrons have a great time. They do appreciate your tips for a job well done. The Board and Staff's dedication / love for Club 717 / DAASC has resulted in Club 717 becoming one of the safest and most respected establishments in our area.

We hope to also celebrate our 50th year anniversary, so let's take this adventure together.

In the Spotlight - by Ivanna

Dear Patrons of Club 717;

Each Month I will be sitting down with a new Drag King or Queen from all over the World. Bringing you their story about who they are and how they became who they are today.

This month I had the opportunity to sit down with Francesca Feelalot and find out what the story was behind her Drag life. I hope these interviews encourage you to be the person who you are.

Francesca Feelalot was born in the summer of 2004 at a party in Montreal with a bottle of Vodka. Some may say that it might be wrong for a Drag Queen to be born by a bottle of Booze but that is the way most of us are sometimes created. The main thing that Francesca remembers about the party is that she ended up putting on 10-inch platform stiletto boots and was wondering around in them at the party.

There were a numerous amount of people who had inspired Francesca to do Drag. Her main inspiration was the one and only Rue Paul, but the one that pushed her to the limits to become more of the Drag Queen she is today would be her sister Feria Feelalot-Dahling. The Queens that have inspired her as of today would be her fellow Drag Queens and Kings at Club 717. They have helped her by building up her confidence, helping her out with her techniques and performances and have been there to support her through thick and thin, whenever she needed help.

At the very beginning when she first was inspired to do Drag, Francesca and her sister Feria sat down together and were thinking about what her drag name should be. Francesca wanted a name that was based around a Spanish ethnicity due to the fact that her background is Spanish. Francesca's Drag persona is more of a kind and loving bitch. She tries to tantalize you with her tits that way she can earn tips for herself. Sometimes she also likes to take the action behind the stage and loves to put on a exciting show for everyone.

Francesca has been performing since the year of 2004. She has performed at several places but her home club is Club 717. She has performed at Crews and Tangos in Toronto and Parking in Montreal. She continues to expand, and is hoping to eventually make a name for herself that way she can start traveling and performing. She has not run in any competitions as of yet, but wants to try and get involved more in the community and wants to start possibly competing in competitions.

When Francesca does performances, she often goes out to purchases her outfits, but there are times where she has her wonderful boyfriend sew up some gowns for her. She also does her own alterations and is hoping to expand in that area to eventually learn how to make her own outfits.  If you want to know more about Francesca or see her perform, she invites you out to her shows at Club 717. You can also feel free to add her to Facebook under Francesca Feelalot.

The Month of May was filled with awesome shows and there was plenty of amazing performances that were held. On May 6th we had Lauren Lovelace's Birthday show which we had Lauren, Ivy and Twiggy perform!! Amazing Job girls. On May 13th we had Kings night, which was hosted by Billie. He had amazing performers come from all around to help fulfill the night of Kings! On May 20th we had Twiggy hosting a show with Ivy and Strawberry and I can say what a fantastic night!! On May 27th I had the privilege of sharing the stage with three fantastic performers. I want to thank Candice, Francesca and Strawberry Shortcake for taking time out of their schedules to come down and have a night filled with laughter and fun. Thank you guys for making the night a blast.

As June rolls around we see that we are getting ready for Durham Pride which is going to be the second week of June, and then we have Toronto Pride at the end of June. Pride Durham this year has a list of many events, which is going to be creative, and I am excited to see where everything goes.

The Following Shows are going to be happening at Club 717 this year which I am really looking forward to:

June 3rd - Pride Fundraiser (Open Stage) Hosted by Ivanna Tip Davenport

June 10th - Pride Weekend Kick Off with wonderful performances by Candice Kelly, Robyn DeCradle - Currently Reigning Miss Gay Toronto, Heroine Marks - Winner of Zelda's Star Search, Dusty Balfour, Vitality Black Kelly and Clint Lyckher

June 20th - Benn and Candice have a show!

June 27th - Ruby will be having her Birthday Show

I hope you all have a wonderful Month of June and I hope you all will be able to come out and celebrate with us for Pride Durham and for Toronto Pride as well!!

Have a wonderful June and I hope to see you all soon!!

Hugz

Sandra's Message:

Blackberry Thumb !!

Blackberry thumb

(Also Nintendo thumb, iPod thumb, text messaging thumb) Blackberry thumb is an irritation of the muscles and tendons at the base of the thumb. It is a rapidly growing condition as more people use thumb-operated gadgets.

Symptoms of Blackberry thumb

Pain: At the base of the thumb which may continue even when the thumb is not being used

Ache: In the thumb web space or base of thumb joint

Muscle tension: In the web space between the thumb and index finger What causes Blackberry thumb?

The muscles and tendons of the thumb are very strong but are not designed for the type of intense activity associated with many of today's handheld devices. Muscle fatigue and excessive muscle tension can cause pain and ache in the muscles and restrict the joint flexibility. Over the long term this kind of excessive use can irritate the tendons (see tendonitis) and additionally lead to premature arthritis.

What can I do about it?

Rest: Stop doing what makes it hurt. This important phase allows the body to start healing.

Balancing of muscle strength: Strengthening weak muscles and loosening tight muscles is crucial to achieving full recovery.

Gentle stretching and massage: Reducing muscle tension will improve flexibility and resolve the achy sensation. Less muscle tension means less force on the tendons and less chance of developing tendonitis. Book an appointment today with one of our Registered Massage Therapists to keep you communicating optimally.

For more information and proper techniques, book an appointment with one of our therapists today.

"Ask Savanaugh.... She'll Have Somethin to Say!"

* Reader Discretion Advised *

Helloooooooooo!  After threatening ya'll that without letters from my tons of adoring fans... the Ask Savanaugh column would have to end.  You have come through... some really fucking stupid questions - but come through none-the-less!

So lets get started.  To the jerk who asked how Savanaugh can fart with her cock stuck up her ass and duct-taped... I respond:  get your cock over here and I'll show you!   Stupid fuck!

And apparently someone wants to know if all of the outfits that I wear are my mothers?  I have to confess (as I have on stage) that at times, I have been known to invade my mother's closet to find an outfit or two.  The bitch has a fabulous figure and wardrobe.  I only wear her gowns and dresses and that's it.  You on the other hand -  we have your number... you were the one who secretly used to invade your mom's wardrobe at 10 years old, strip down,  put on her pantyhose and spend hours in the bathroom humping chocolate pudding and inserting pudding pops.

Another reader wants to know if I ever worry about going too far on stage.  She made reference to birthing Jesus in my Politically Incorrect Christmas show, humping mashed potatoes during a Newfie Screech show and once asking an attractive aunt if she had performed oral sex on her attractive niece who was in the audience at the time.  My response - FUCK NO!   If you wanted to see fucking Mary Poppins in a dress - you have come to the wrong place.  I am constantly trying to find ways to offend!  Ironically, every single time I've said to myself... okay - this next number is going to get me in a lot of trouble... you all fail me!  I pull a fucking chocolate bar out of a toilet on stage and eat it... I wait for it... the boos, the repulsion... and no.  Instead, a burst of laughter - you are all sick fucks!!!!  It's a lot of pressure to be this offensive ya know!  If I ever walked on stage and did the Sound of Music soundtrack - you would boo me off the stage.  Now if I was having sex with all of the Vontrapp children at the time - a fucking standing ovation.  Now tell me... who is the one who needs the therapy?  So worry about being offensive?  with the audience I have to perform to - I worry about not being offensive enough!

Finally, someone asked if Savanaugh has ever had sex with a dog.  Oh please... have you seen some of the guys at the club?  Of course I have!

Please send your questions and comments to:  Savanaugh@Club717.ca or facebook the bitch!

AIDS Committee of Durham Region -

Let's Show Our Pride By Helping Our Youth This Month

By Mark Hammann

M2M Outreach Worker - AIDS Committee of Durham Region

By now I am sure that many of you are aware that the Durham School Board banned ACDR's youth campaign last fall.  The campaign features two silhouettes, one of a rooster with the words 'Cover Your' and the other is a cat and 'Protect Your'.  These were created by a local student to be used as a youth HIV awareness campaign that gets the message of condom use across in an effective and non-verbal manner.   Recently it has gotten a fair bit of attention after the school board banned the "I © Boobies" campaign by the 'Keep A Breast Foundation'.   Keep A Breast Foundation is a U.S. based non-profit organization with a Canadian Chapter that works towards breast cancer awareness.

One of the statements that the school board has made to support its ban of both of these health campaigns is that these campaigns have "proven to only be disruptive when used in a school".   I don't know about you, but I find that response very weak.  I believe that educating can often bring about uncomfortable and challenging issues that people would rather not discuss.  I also believe that discussion and education are exactly what ARE needed if we are to learn and grow.   Growing up in the southern U.S., where issues of race and homophobia prevail I have personally experienced the damage that silence can do to individuals and society as a whole.  In the short term, we may feel that all is fine and that we are protecting some, but the challenging issues we as a society face in the long term can never truly be resolved or effectively coped with when we choose to censor and shut down discussion.   The statement offered by the school board in defense of their position also reminds me of a statement I remember being made by school officials down south years ago.  I very vividly remember school officials stating that allowing black people to attend white schools would 'only be disruptive to the educational process'.    I also have heard statements that Gay/Straight Student Alliances (GSA's) would be 'disruptive' if allowed in schools.   All of these statements have repeatedly proven false.

Andrea Pidwerbecki, a spokeswoman for the Durham District School Board shared the following remark about the board's decision to ban the Keep A Breast campaign; "... because that whole campaign is not well-known or understood by many people."   I am sure as well that some might say that our youth campaign is not well-known or understood by many people.  Speaking for myself, isn't this more reason for an opportunity to educate and help youth to understand an important health issue?   Ms. Pidwerbecki has also been quoted as saying, "the school board values the role of the AIDS Committee and welcomes the education it provides students -- as long as that slogan isn't involved."   For the AIDS Committee to present our health information in the public schools we have to be invited by the schools.   To the best of my knowledge we have only ever been invited by a small number of educators to talk about HIV/AIDS in the public schools.  During the past year we presented at one (1) school and three (3) school events, getting this important health information to approximately 575 youth.   Each of the past three years we have been invited to present to almost identical numbers of youth in the schools.  While it is good that we have been able to get this information to those 575, there are 23,909 secondary students currently enrolled in the Durham District Schools.   So in reality we were only allowed to reach 2% of this regions high school aged youth through the schools.   In my opinion this is too low of a percentage and so, I must respond that I cannot agree with her statement that the school board welcomes the education that ACDR provides its students when two percent is all we have been allowed to reach.

I must ask that beyond this 2% how many LGBTQ, Queer questioning and other at risk youth in the Durham school system have been left behind?   These youth need this health information for their protection and to protect one another.  If we as a region are serious about health and preventing increasing numbers of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancies among our youth then we need to be educating them at far better than just a mere 2%.

By not reaching enough youth (many who are at risk) in this region are we failing them?  Let us join together this month (right now) to show our pride supporting our youth by sharing the knowledge that is out there and is available.  Let's hold the school board to its words that this information is 'welcomed' and start educating!

If you'd like to sign the petition that we'll present to the school board trustees you can do so online at: www.ipetitions.com/petition/youthcampaign or at one of our safer sex distribution partners locations. Taking the Lead - Pet Care Message - by Corry

Q: I was wondering if you could tell me about Heartworms and if there are any alternatives to prevent or treat them.

A: Heartworms are parasitic worms that are transmitted via the saliva of mosquitoes. The infected mosquito bites a dog and the baby worms or microfilaria are injected under the skin and then travel through the bloodstream to the heart. It takes around 6 months for the lifecycle to renew. Heartworms can reach up to 11 inches in length and in the minority of cases cause persistent coughing, difficulty breathing and even heart failure.  Remember, that the presence of one or two heartworms is generally not serious, but the presence of large numbers of heartworms + a heart condition are usually fatal.

In 2010, the Ontario Veterinary College's Department of Pathology at the University of Guelph revealed that 564 dogs tested positive for heartworm in Canada; 431 of those dogs were located in Ontario.

The preventative drugs of choice contain chemical insecticides to prevent the microfilaria from developing into adult heartworms. There are many side effects, including vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, loss of appetite and even death.

If you have a dog with a compromised immune system, suffering from heart disease or live in a highly infested area, you may still want to use the traditional preventative drugs.

Another option you may want to discuss with your vet is the use of a homeopathic nosode made from heartworm larvae. Some holistic vets recommend a 30C dose every 2 weeks over the course of mosquito season. You may also want to explore the feeding of a raw diet, as wild animals such as coyotes and wolves do not seem to be susceptible to heartworm.  In general, the healthier the dog, the less likely they will be susceptible to illnesses. For those of you with cats, it is highly unlikely that they will be infected with heartworms.

Look at using Coenzyme Q10 to strengthen the heart or using natural bug repellants if your dog is out at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most prevalent. You can make your own using 1-2 drops of geranium oil, lavender oil or eucalyptus oil into 1 cup of warm water. Keep out of your pet's eyes and other mucous membranes.

Wormwood and Black walnut are herbs that are quite effective on worms and other parasites; so that may also be an option to supplement their diet.

Ultimately, you have to make the right choice for you and your dog. Discuss your options with your vet.

I wish you luck and hope you have a fantastic summer.

Distress Centre Durham (DCD), in partnership with CDCD (Community Development Council Durham, Aids Committee Durham, PFLAG Durham and the LGBTQ Communities Involved Committee is excited to announce the launch of their new project Prideline Durham!

Coming in September 2011 Prideline, a helpline geared specifically to the needs of the LGBTQ community in Durham Region will operate from 6pm, 7 days per week. For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact Erica Simpson, LGBTQ Program Director at 905-430-3511 x34 or our website at www.distresscentredurham.com. We look forward to promoting Prideline Durham and answering questions from the community at Pride Durham this June as well as Pride Toronto, this July.

We are collecting details of organizations, businesses, individual professionals, and groups that identify as allies for the LGBTQ community and/or that provide LGBTQ-targeted services. These services and resources will be listed, with your permission, in the first edition of the Prideline Durham Services and Resources Guidebook. The purpose of the guidebook is to be a reference tool for Prideline Durham telephone operators so that they are able to offer guidance to callers looking for LGBTQ-friendly or positive spaces or services in Durham Region.

Please consider lending your time and expertise to this important initiative by clicking on the link below and filling in the on-line survey: Click here

Hi Friends,

I thought I would share 'My Thoughts' - http://www.m2minfocentre.com/marks-thoughts.php .  on the M2M Information Centre web site (www.m2minfocentre.com).

I invite you to read the article and let me know what you think.  The AIDS Committee is reaching only 2% of Durham regions high school youth.  This fact, means that not even a full 1% of LGBTQ and other 'at risk' youth are getting the information they need on HIV/AIDS.  This is health information that will help them stay healthy and safe.   A youth developed campaign was created to increase this percentage of youth we are reaching.  A campaign that has been praised nationally and internationally as effective.  That campaign has now been banned by the school board, even though it has shown an increase in awareness among youth.   ACDR HAS to be invited by the Schools to give presentations on HIV/AIDS.  The school board says it 'welcomes' the information ACDR gives to the students.  But, ACDR cannot just go in and give HIV/AIDS presentations without invitation.  So if ACDR has not been getting more than three or four of those 'invitations' to present to students in the past (before this currently banned campaign), how are we to get the information to our youth?

So I ask you, is reaching 2% (less than one full percent of LGBTQ and other 'at risk' youth) acceptable to you?

Thanks for your time and concern,

Mark Hammann

Something to Say - by Savanaugh

Okay, some total ass recently asked me why the hell Durham is having its own Pride parade and a full week of Pride celebrations.  As he put it, all the gays can go into the city and party with all of the freaks there.  I looked at him straight in the eye and told him it was because of douchebags like him!

The mere fact that he has no concept of why Pride is important or why we would need one in our community - is the very proof why we in fact do.  Every single fucking day of the year is his celebration.  Go anywhere in most of Oshawa and you will find the daily, "in your face" celebration of Oshawa trash.  Everywhere he goes, he has the privilege of being surrounded by others just like him!  Turn any downtown core corner and you see the likes of him.  Pick-up truck, pot belly, tattoed to the hilt, cigarette suspended from one lip, beer can in the other smacking hi grotesquely obese 10 year old son upside the head while his wife is straddling his best friend's Harley wearing a skirt barely covering her hootch, chewin on a juicy-fruit stick, midriff showing and a 70's inspired tube top.  And they call the Pride Parade a freak show?

Head down to Lakeview Park on Canada Day and you will see a freak show.  Come on folks, lets call it like it is.  The July 1st celebration is when all of the underemployed trailer trash all get to congregate with their coolers full of beer and  cheap wine spritzers, sends their kids off barefoot in the contaminated waters of Lake Ontario -  while half-naked trash cuddle on their blankets bumping and grinding to grotesque cover bands of Aerosmith and Def Leppard.  Ya you are right bud - high fucking culture there... go smack your wife and kid around some more to compensate for your lack of self-worth or accomplishment in life.

So, in a couple of weeks, the LGBTQ community of Durham are taking over your streets and parks.  You can have them the other 258 days of the year.  For one week, our community will show you how to celebrate the values of our community with class and dignity.  For one week, Oshawa will be a much better place!  A week later, the true freaks of Oshawa can have their city back!

Until Next Month,

Savanaugh
