Is there a bug in your apple?

 

Apple finally sounded off on its phone tracking imbroglio on Wednesday telling iPhone customers that "it's the location, stupid." The company claims its tracking feature is designed to collect data on cell towers and wifi hotspots, not users.

 

Apple said that the feature, which makes a note of each cellular network tower and WiFi hot spot iPhones associate with, is part of a larger, company maintained database of Wi-Fi hot spots and cell towers in the user's vicinity. The locations of those towers "help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested," Apple said. Rather than relying on GPS to calculating a phone's location iPhones use the information from proximate towers and hot spots to triangulate a position and reduce the amount of time it takes to find and connect to GPS satellites. When GPS service is unavailable, the location data can even be used to calculate a users location on its own

I Hate to be political.... Sav's never political.  Well, maybe in the hidden context of some of her numbers..... like doing dirty things to an American flag (not so subtle I suppose) or pulling Stephen Harper dolls out of her twat (also not so subtle).  Okay, Sav can be political!   That is what drag has traditionally been about - making the social commentaries that everyone else was afraid to speak out loud.  Drag Queens can get away with murder.  To be honest, I am constantly surprised with what I get away with on stage that in any other social construct - may even find me in jail or at least paying a substantial fine!

So elections are upon us.  I'm not going to force my political views on anyone.  Orange is a fabulous colour on me - just sayin!  I hear the grumbles and mumbles already - but I wear my left-winged socialist agenda with PRIDE!   It pisses me off to see people lavishing in the social programs this great country has to offer.   Canadians pride ourselves on a top-notch education system, social safety net programs and of course our universal health care.  Pride to the point that we will BRAG on our travels about how good we have it.  But ever admit or recognize that all of these programs were initiated, fought for and created by left-of centre viewpoints.... no we are not SOCIALISTS!   The colour orange suddenly looks good on us when we are having our arm patched back together at the hospital but to put an orange sign on our front lawn... "no I'm not one of THEM"

 
I look in awe and wonder as I drive through some very modest neighbourhoods and see that house desperately needing repairs and an old clunker in the driveway and yes.... a blue sign?  WTF?   I think it must be some form of mental illness to be honest.  The people who will stub their toe on the driveway and decide that it might be a good idea to give her another wack just for fun.   Since ya got nothing..... ya might as well continue with nothing.  People who have just rolled over and accepted the lot that others have created for them.

 
Did I say Sav is not intentionally political?  I'm not going to tell anybody which party to vote for.  I have not even mentioned the political parties or candidates.  All I'm saying is that from a social fashion point of view... orange can look great on almost everybody... but blue?  Well only about 5% of the population can really afford to wear that colour.  Think about it....

 ello Everyone,

 
Normally I do not about talk politics, and this time is not any different! I would like to urge everyone to get out and vote May 2nd 2011.
 
 

Why is it important to vote?

  • The right to vote is a fundamental democratic right that is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is the cornerstone of democracy.
  • When we vote, we choose the representatives who will make the laws and policies that govern how we live together.
  • The legitimacy of a government lies in the fact that it is elected. Low voter turnouts may call into question this democratic legitimacy.
  • While democracy involves much more than holding elections every five years, voting is a powerful way to send a message to governments and politicians. The more votes, the more powerful the message is. In other words, every vote counts.
  • Compared to other forms of political participation, voting does not require a lot of time or effort - in other words, it is one of the easiest ways to have a say in how your society is governed.

Why is the youth vote important?

  • According to our research , only 37.4% of 18 to 24-year-olds voted at the 2008 general election. That means over 60% of young Canadians did not participate in selecting this country's government.
  • When politicians know in advance that most young people don't vote, they may be less interested in making the effort to be responsive to issues that matter to younger Canadians.
  • Some say that young people don't vote because politicians don't care about youth issues or don't talk to young people in their own language. But by not voting, young Canadians lose an important opportunity to make their voices heard by politicians. 

Remember, it doesn't matter personally who you vote for on my end, it makes no difference, as long as you try and make a difference by voting.

On a brighter note, Spring has finally arrived... and the loads of rain! We kicked April off with an April fool's joke all on the patrons... and had a DRAG free Friday dance night... I personally think that it was a success! If you'd like to see more events like that, or anything actually, email Bianca at entertainment@club717.ca 

Club 717's Got Talent was cancelled due to lack of interest! That's not to say that it will not happen, but it won't happen without your support.

Well everyone, it is the half way mark through my Presidency, and it's been quiet the ride! Up's and Downs, fights and conquers, but it's been a very positive six months so far, trying out a lot of new things! I can't wait to see what the other six months has to offer. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at president@club717.ca or stop me around the club and say "hello".

In the Spotlight - by Ivanna

 

Dear Patrons of Club 717,

 

Starting as of next month, I will be sitting down with drag queens from all over and will be giving you their stories about how they became who they are today. A lot of us know the performers but what we don't know is the story that lays behind them and what it was that motivated them to get into doing Drag. Certain Queens and Kings have been around for years and then there are ones that are fresh and brand new. This will give you all the opportunity to get to know performers better.

 

For the month of April, we had a lot of fantastic shows going on and i can say i was awed by a lot of them. On April 8th we were privileged to have the Pride Durham fundraiser at our club and they had brought in two fantastic performers. The night was filled with laughter and cheer when Robin Loren and Ivy took the stage and amazed the audience with a fantastic show. On April 15th we had Nikki Chin and Katherine Dior bring their Spoiled Rotten show to Club 717, and that was a night of fun. They were able to get the crowd going and kept the momentum growing through out the night. Girls you did a fantastic job and can't wait to see you do it again. On April 22nd, Ruby held her Let Them Eat Fish Show which had Ruby, Madge, Candice and Benn Dover in it and all i can say is what a hoot that was. Fun of fun and laughter. April 29th, we had one heck of a Mothers Day Show and all I can say is WOW!!! I never knew how my drag mother could have embarrassed me more in front of an audience then the way she did. Savanaugh I want to say a thank you for putting up with me and for letting this show be successful.

 

As we move into May, Several things come to people's minds and we wonder, Wow, where has the year gone already. June is soon approaching which mean Pride is around the corner, and so is Durham Pride as well. This year Durham Pride has a week full of events which is bound to be amazing and filled with so much fun. 

 

In May we have some fantastic shows lined up for you. 

 

- May 6th is Lauren Lovelace's Birthday Show

- May 13th is going to be a King's Night that is hosted by Billie

- May 20th is going to be a Night with Twiggy 

and 

- May 27th is going to be a Night with Ivanna Tip Davenport and Friends

 

We hope to see you all out to these events, to share some fun times and laughs together.

Many thanks to the Board of Directors at Club 717 and it's members for allowing Pride Durham to hold a fundraiser there on April 8th.

The evening was hosted by Ivy, whom changed her weekend plans to enusre the fundraiser was a success. We had Robin Loren from Toronto as our special guest. Thank you to both entertainers for a great job !!!

We held a raffle for a 26 inch flat screen TV and Carrie Baker won it. There was also a 50/50 draw, so the evening was an overall success.


We are looking for volunteers, so if you can spare a few hours for this worthy cause, please contact us.

We are now focusing on the totally expanded Pride Durham functions for this year. Instead of having just a one day event, it's turned it into a week's worth of PRIDE CELEBRATIONS. Beginning on Sunday with a Youth dance at Club 717 and on Monday June 6th with flag raisings in the various cities throughout Durham and ending on Sunday June 12th with the  first Pride Durham Parade through downtown Oshawa. Spring Cleansing Tips !!
 

Now that Spring has finally Sprung, it is beneficial to do a Spring Cleaning; not just inside your home but inside your body as well.
 
Recipe for Detox Tea:

·         In a tea strainer or empty tea bag mix together equal parts of dandelion, burdock, red clover, peppermint, green tea
·         Drink 3 cups/day
 

Cleansing Cocktail:
 
In a juicer mix the following:

1/2 cup wheatgrass or parsley
4 carrots
1 apple, cut into wedges
2 celery ribs
1/2 beet with top
bunch up the wheatgrass or parsley and push through with carrot,
alternate the remaining ingredients to ensure proper mixing.

Reel World - by Kevan 

This month we return to the Reel World with an excellent television movie from HBO, recently released on DVD...

"Temple Grandin" is a bio-pic of it's subject, Dr. Temple Grandin,  who was diagnosed as autistic in 1950; despite this, she grew up to attend high school and college, earning her bachelor's degree in psychology, and both her master's degree and her doctorate in animal science.  The film uses flashbacks to show the challenges faced by Temple and her family, especially her mother who refused to institutionalize her despite the recommendation of doctors, and her aunt, who provides Temple with her first sustained interaction with livestock that opens the doors to her world, and shows her how she can contribute to the world around her.

The cast is truly first rate - Claire Danes inhabits the world of Grandin from her teenage years to her late 20's.  Julia Ormond is excellent as Grandin's mother and Catherine O'Hara turns in a wonderfully heartfelt performance as Temple's aunt. 

Even if bio-pics are not really your thing, I would highly recommend this film; it offers an interesting look into the world of autism (albeit through a high functioning autistic individual), as well as the struggle for women to enter industries traditionally held by men - in this case, cattle ranching and the slaughterhouse.   And while I know many people are not the biggest fans of audio commentaries, I would highly recommend the one on this disc - it not only is a conversation with the director and writer of the film, but also with it's subject.  The real Temple Grandin demonstrates such acuteness of how her mind works, you will be left spellbound.

Sexual Health Fact:  HIV is Still an Issue for M2M

If you read the newspaper or watch television news you can get the impression that HIV/AIDS is effecting youth and women more than M2M (gay, bi and men who have sex with men).   As well, many of us who work in the field of HIV prevention often talk about how this pandemic is spreading among youth, women, seniors, people of colour and aboriginals.   While it is true that HIV infections are spreading and increasing among these populations, M2M in North America continue to make up the majority of new HIV infections. 

In Canada; gay, bi and other men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to comprise the greatest proportion (41.8%) of new HIV infections*.  In the United States according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), M2M account for more than half (53%) of new infections annually.   So, why don't we hear more about M2M and HIV infection rates? 

Since the beginning of the pandemic, HIV has had the stigma of being a 'gay disease'.  Through years of education we have worked hard to educate society that HIV is not an infection that is exclusive to men who have sex with men, which we know it is not.  But, in this process have we 'dropped the ball' on the pandemic within our M2M community?  As mentioned above, M2M are still disproportionately affected by HIV, but proportionally the funding for M2M prevention efforts remains lower than other 'at risk groups'.     More funding goes towards HIV prevention for youth than to M2M, is one example of this disproportion.   The high rates of new infections among M2M should be proof that we need more funding to fight the pandemic in our M2M community and funding needs to be proportionate across all 'at risk groups'. 

Do we need to 'reclaim HIV as a M2M issue?   Personally, I believe that we as M2M need to reclaim this as our issue.   We need to do this within our community, among ourselves.   We need to be careful and aware not to increase the association between HIV and M2M outside of our community which could refuel that old stigma, but we do need to support and fight for the health of our M2M community and our future.   We need to push for more funding that is reflective of the number of infections our community faces annually.   We as a community need to come together again and see HIV as our issue.   We need to make our younger M2M more aware that HIV is still here, that there's still no cure and we as M2M continue to have the highest infection rates.  We need to stand together and fight for more proportionate funding in this pandemic and we need to educate each other on this important health issue.  It's time we reclaim HIV as our issue!

Q: I adopted a dog and have discovered with the spring storms that he is terrified of thunder. Are there any drug free options to try?

 

A: No one is sure why some pets are afraid of thunderstorms but one theory that is being explored is that because animals are so sensitive to changes in energy that the storms may cause an electrical disturbance that affects some pets more than others.

 

 There are several options you may want to explore with your dog.

The first one is using Rescue Remedy-it is a combination of 5 Bach Flowers that work synergistically for anxiety and fears; but it may not work on its own. You may have to use it in conjunction with some of the other treatment options.

 

Behavioural desensitization is another treatment you may want to try. You need to get a recording of thunderstorms and play it for your dog. You start out with a low volume and expose him for short periods of time; gradually increasing the intensity and the duration. This option works well with Rescue Remedy.

 

Tellington Touch for Animals is an effective method for dealing with fears and anxieties. By using firm but gentle movements such as working on the ears from base to tip in a circular motion, you can help your dog regain his courage and bring him back into emotional balance.

 

The final option would be to try a body wrap. The wrap uses maintained pressure and acupressure points to relieve anxiety. Temple Grandin discovered that maintained pressure is reassuring to animals. The wrap generally comes with two straps that maintain pressure in the hindquarters, where most dogs store their stress and fears. It is adjustable and you will need to measure your dog's chest to find the correct fit.

 

You may need to try several of these treatment options before you find the one that works for your dog. Good luck :)

Coming in September 2011 Prideline, a helpline geared specifically to the needs of the LGBTQ community in Durham Region will operate from 6pm, 7 days per week.  The Steve O'Connor Memorial Fund

 

We were trying to decide how we could honour Steve's contribution to our agency on an on-going, long term basis.  We decided that a scholarship in his name would be a good way to do it, because, in a sense, it would be a way for him to continue helping others.  Active ACDR volunteers will be eligible to apply for the scholarship to help fund their education or professional development.  We have earmarked $2000 for the first year for the scholarship(s). 

 

We will also be accepting donations from the community to add to the scholarship.  Donations can be made out to the AIDS Committee of Durham Region, with instructions to direct the funds to the scholarship. All donations will receive a charitable tax receipt.

 

We are also be looking for a volunteer or two to sit on the granting committee, if you think you or someone from Club 717 might be interested in doing that, let me know, or have them get in touch with me.   

 

I'll be including an article in our volunteer newsletter about the scholarship.

The Town of Ajax is celebrating Youth Week with a number of events including FREE drop in programs (basketball, open gym), Fitness & Health Centre FREE Trials, Open Mic/Karaoke Night, Video Game Party, Youth Swim & Slide Ride Competition, and a Spring Fling Video Dance.  On Wed. May 4, the Town will celebrate the Grand Re-Opening of "The Zone", the newly re-modeled Youth Room at the Ajax COmmunity Centre from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.  On Sat. May 7, Ajax Youth are invited to take part in the "Encourage Me Ajax" Walk & Rally which features a free BBQ, band performances and guest speaker Ryan Porter.  2 - 5 p.m. at Ajax Town Hall.

Durham Pride Prom

Friday, May 6     Pictures & Poptails at 6:30, Dinner at 7:30 and dancing to follow til midnight.  The Durham Pride Prom is an end-of-year celebration for GLBTQ youth in Durham and their allies ages 16-21 yrs.  This year's theme is "In the Spotlight", so prepare to walk the red carpet.  Guest host for the event will be Mike Chault from Proud FM and television's Wedding SOS, Kim's Rude Awakenings and Queer as Folk.

MAY IN THE GARDEN 
 

I've been so busy that I almost forgot to write an article this month.  At the beginning of April when the weather sort of turned half decent, we decided to extend our deck, something that we talked about for the last couple of years, but never got around to.  So it started.  Because we were extending the deck, and I would be adding new deck boards, It was decided to remove the old deck boards, as they were 12 years old and build a whole new top.  

 

When the demolition began and we checked out the supports under the deck, we realized that we needed to replace everything.  The support underneath, was not pressure treated wood and was in a state of decay.  So new pressure treated four by fours were used to support the new decks and 6 four by fours were extended through the deck so that we could build a see through roof on the upper deck, to provide shelter from inclement weather while allowing light to shine through.  But because of bad weather and social engagements,  the roof has yet to be completed.  And the electrician is coming this week to install a couple of lights and another plug, so we can be ready to decorate for Christmas or whatever.  And we decided to do all this now, so that we could enjoy it this summer.  

 

So if you have any building or gardening construction, now is the time to get started, so that you can enjoy it this summer; or at least start it now and perhaps finish it this summer.  

 

So now that we have spent a lot time in the backyard, at Home Depot, at Canadian Tire, Rona and Lowes, I can tell you that their garden stock is arriving and the stock increases each week.  Because we have been working on the deck, I have been analyzing the garden, to determine what I like about it and what I do not like about.  In the summer when the garden is full of shrubs, perennials and annuals, I absolutely love the colours, the textures, the blend of different seasonal flowers, from spring until fall.  By the end of  May the garden will be in full display, that just keeps changing through the summer into fall.

 

But from January until April, I find the garden lacking what I call winter interest.  The back corner of the garden, is landscaped with dwarf evergreens - a globe blue spruce standard, a couple of pyramid boxwoods, a nest spruce  and a skyrocket juniper.  And this corner has a lot of winter interest because of the different sizes, and shapes and colours. It doesn't die to the ground.  So now I find myself wanting to add more dwarf evergreen materials to different parts of the garden, to continue that year long look throughout the whole garden.  And when the perennials and annuals come into play, they will enhance those features.

 

So I have already purchased a couple of plants for the garden.  I was in Sheridan Nursery in Toronto, last weekend and purchased a weeping white pine, which is now planted near the deck.  This pine had twisting branches, and gets more beautiful and fuller as it gets older.  I have to stake it, so that I can train it upward, as it has a tendency to spread.  

 

Also have planted a dwarf golden barberry near the red one that is in the garden, as this will give nice contrast.  Two dwarf rhododendrons with evergreen small leaves and purple flowers are now in the garden.  I was going to buy a couple of boxwoods, but I thought that these rhododendrons would give a similar affect, but with some colourful flowers.

 

As far as garden chores right now:

 

Cut down those perennial

Prune any late flowering shrubs, vines , hedges, roses

Fertilize the lawn and garden

Now is a good time to over seed your lawn if it needs thickening up

Dig over flower and vegetable beds

Plant trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals later in the month

Grass cutting starts the first week of May

And most of all- get out there, have a bbq and a glass of wine and enjoy your garden
