ITunes Identy Theft
Terry Coffey of Anchorage, Alaska, said that he first became aware of a problem with his iTunes account when he received a receipt for a $50 iTunes gift card purchase. Coffey, who says he's careful with his money, was immediately suspicious and investigated the charge, but couldn't find any record of it on any of his credit card statements. A closer look at his iTunes account revealed why: unknown assailants had seized control of his account and modified the credit card information associated with it. A different credit card number had been used, listing and Coffey's address had been changed from Anchorage to a city in Tennessee. The fraudulent credit card account was used to purchase the gift card as well as a single iTunes song, Coffey said.
Coffey, who spoke to Threatpost in March, said his efforts to resolve the issue with Apple haven't been successful so far. Now, with his account disabled because of the fraud, he has been unable to download songs or application, or access the iTunes store from his Apple laptop or iPhone. He said he expects to get his account reinstated eventually, but is wary of trusting iTunes with sensitive information.
"The way that i'm treating this is that Apple has a problem so I'm not keeping any financial info in it. If I need to make a purchase, I'll add the information at that point."
The exact number of victims is unclear. Apple hasn't issued a public statement to explain the source of the account compromises, preferring to make restitution to individual victims. On the company's customer support forums, posts from victims are numerous. One support threat "iTunes Account Hacked" has 193 posts dating back to November, 2010. Most read like the user with the handle Brad P who described his experience in an e-mail message to Threatpost.
As has been the case all along, Apple declined to respond in any way to requests for comment or explanation from Threatpost. The company has declined to respond in any fashion to Threatpost's articles on the account compromises or offer any further information on the source or solution for the hacks.
That leaves loyal Apple users like Brad P frustrated and doubtful of the integrity of the iTunes platform - and Apple itself

Joke of the Month
A drunk phoned the local police department to report that thieves had been in his car. "They have stolen the dashboard, the steering wheel, the brake pedal, even the accelerator,"
he cried out.
However, before the police investigation could start, the phone rang a second time, and the same voice came over the line. "Never mind," the drunk said with a hiccup.

Something to Say - by Savanaugh
Something to Say - April
I'm tired... just plain tired. It is approaching that time of year again when the gay community begins to unify in celebration. The gays come to life as spring approaches and begin our months reminding everyone that we are still here. You know, the Pride Proms, the awards ceremonies, the fundraisers and of course Pride itself. Same old, same old year after year!
For those of us old queens who have been around the block and worked every possible corner, we become bitter, complacent and tired. Plan another party, support another cause, hang that tattered rainbow flag for yet another year. How many don't even bother to fight the traffic and crowds to attend the big Toronto parade? Let's face it, we have all seen our fair share of neon blue, sparkling hot pants. Tired...
We need to suck it up however and stop being so selfish. For many in our community it is still fresh and brand new. If you have ever taken a virgin to their first Pride parade in the city - you know exactly what I mean. The reality is that hate crimes against our community has not gone done. The drop-out and suicide rate for our youth is as high as ever. The data speaks for itself. While us old tired queens just want to put our feet up, watch the parade on tv and then turn to some porn to finish the night off... there are thousands who are about to experience a life-altering moment for them.
Try your hardest to recall back to your own first Pride experiences. The over-indulgence and the high emotions. We have all teared up in the early years of our process. The affirmation we get when surrounded by a million others just like us. It is important we don't forget how important Pride was to all of us. The weeks of anticipation... the week of partying. It is just as important now to our youth as it was to all of us at one time.
Join our youth in celebrating all we have achieved as a community. Enjoy through the eyes of these young Pride virgins. Go out of your way to celebrate with them... they can help you reclaim some of your own youthful days. At the very least, encourage a youth to head out and enjoy themselves. With a hug and hand full of condoms... send them on their way for the time of the life!!!
There ya have it......

President's Message
was saddened to hear of the passing of Steve O' Connor. I have worked with Steve many times over the years! He was one of the Founder's of Durham Alliance Association Social Club back in 1987.
After 24 year's Club 717 has been able to keep its doors open, and keeps growing strong, itself and within the community, just like Steve helped start. With 24 years of success under our belt, let's hope we can do another twenty-five years to make him and all other the other Founders proud of their legacy. You will be missed Cottage Guy, you and your jokes J
On another note, WOW what a month!!! Burlesque was AA------MAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Packed house two nights in a row, line up by 10PM, and A TONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN of rehearsal hours put into it. Amazing job Twiggy, Chardonnay, Francesca, Ivanna, and a special thank you to Ivy, for helping whip the show into the amazing production that it turned into!!! What are you guys going to be planning for next year's Mardi Gras Party??

Saying Good Bye to a Friend and a Pioneering Durham Region Icon
I often wonder how many of us reflect on how both Club 717 and the Aids Committee got here!!!!! We simply walk through their doors and never think of the actions of one person or a group of individuals who banded together, so we can have places to go in the Community.
I also think of the giant leaps and bounds we are making in our quest to be accepted more readily in the general public.
Years ago, Steve and the others who banded together to form Durham Alliance Association Social Club (aka Club 717) faced many obstacles, yet they persevered and today we can gather at the Club or ACDR to enjoy the different venues and have a "safe' place to relax in.
Those afflicted with HIV / AIDS can also have a place to go for help with their various needs. This is once again due to the perseverance of Steve and his team.
There was also the Gay Hotline in Durham. Steve used to have this telephone line in his home, and would be "on call" 24/7 to answer calls from people in crisis situations.
Steve had so many stories to tell about all these things that he believed in and fought for in our Community. I only wish that he had written a book. I, among many were blessed to be his friend. I will never forget the first night that I got enough nerve up to go to the Club. Steve was on the door, and immediately made me feel a little at ease. We met a few days later for coffee, and it was from here that I got involved with the Club.
I was always amazed at the many friends and acquaintances Steve had. It seemed that he knew someone everywhere he went, and he had such a wealth of knowledge about many different things. I know that I was always eager to listen to him because I was new to the gay scene, and he had so many experiences to share, that it was overwhelming.
Steve was an easy person to have as a friend. He was used to helping in his profession and in his numerous volunteer positions, so he was always available to lend a hand. He would call me on Sunday and let me know the days in the coming week that he couldn't help me with things because of other commitments that he had.
As you all know, Steve had a passion for cars, and his knowledge was endless. He knew the smallest details about every make and model. He was thrilled last August when my Father let him drive the 63 Buick Wildcat.
When an accident like this happens to people who we are close to, it always serves to remind us just how fragile our human life is. I never thought that the last time Steve helped me with a beer or supply run would be the last time he ever would. I never thought that the last time we went for coffee, would be the last time ever. I could go on and on, but the reality is that we should cherish our friendships and keep the true ones close to us.
One of Steve's daily rituals was to watch Opera. You never called him during that hour because he wouldn't answer. A few weeks ago, Opera was interviewing Barbara Streisand. I thought how he would have loved to see that interview. Ironically, Barbara said something during that interview that I will remember Steve by. Opera asked her how she managed to be so humble with all her fame, wealth and success, and Barbara answered "I don't think I'm any different than anyone else. We are all stars within our own identity." Steve was a star in every aspect of his life. His career, his devotion to our Community, his family and above all his friends.
Good Bye my Friend and thanks for being who you were!!! John Duvall |

Sandra's Message:
Stay Healthy Gardening Tips !!
Help ensure a healthy and pain free gardening season, especially in the early spring when you first start to tinker, by following these simple tips.
The following guidelines can be easily incorporated into your gardening routine to help you keep a happy, healthy back.
The gardening season begins.
- Take it slow. Even if you think you are in good shape, slightly different muscle activity can still make you sore. This can be especially true when doing a lot of planting and clean up both at the beginning of the season and in the fall. Remember, general muscle soreness from activity usually gets much better within 2 days. Pain lasting longer with the same intensity or feels worse should be looked at by a health professional to rule out injury.
- Use the right equipment. Using equipment that properly fits is extremely important. Take necessary precautions for exposure to the sun and wear functional supportive footwear. Orthotic shoe inserts can correct altered foot mechanics and can help prevent foot, ankle, knee, hip, and lower back pain.
- Eat well and stay hydrated. A well balanced diet can go a long way to providing the needed energy for activity and allow for healthy weight loss as a bonus. Be sure to take in plenty of fluids after any activity, especially when outdoors.
Back Problem Warning Signs
- Leg pain with numbness, tingling, and/or weakness.
- Back or leg pain with coughing or sneezing.
- Difficulty standing up after sitting for any period of time.
- Stiffness in the morning that decreases when you move around.
- Pain in your hip, buttock, thigh, knee, or foot.
- Inability to turn or bend to each side equally.
- Unbalanced posture, when your head, neck, or shoulder may be higher on one side than the other.
- Pain which prevents you from sleeping well.
- Pain that persists or worsens after 48 hours.

"Ask Savanaugh.... She'll Have Somethin to Say!"
* Reader Discretion Advised *

Apparently Savanaugh can be a little too crude for some of ya. This girl just calls it like she sees it my friends with no holds barr - she'll call a cum shot a cum shot! So continue sending in your questions and life concerns either on Savanaugh's facebook or through savanaugh@club717.ca
A reader recently inquired why so many lesbians wear strap-on when they obviously don't want anything to do with dick? A man obviously asked this question. I'm suspecting some penile inferiority complex going on here. Look down bud.... you must be packing less than 4inches to have even bothered to ask this question. Not getting any from the wife these days? Found her strap-on hidden deep in the drawers and realized you just ain't cutting it for her. I think a lesbian or two needs to strap-on, bend this guy over and show him what it's all about... screaming "take that bitch... man enough for ya now?"
A second very detailed set of questions came from a reader referring to themselves as Tora Hyman. Love this reader already... we have something in common... as I've torn a few hyman's myself! Now Tora seems right pissed off -pointing out that many in our community can be so critical about everything from drag performances, the Board of Directors to always looking for what others can do for them. Further, Tora suggests that many in the community don't do their part (even if it is donating to the causes if the time is not available to volunteer). I'm not exactly sure where the question is Tora, it seems like you should be writing your own fucking column but I shall address. Holly shit... what a mouth full your comments were (and believe me, I know a mouth full when I see it). Two parts here, first of all you are right there are many who are very critical of the hard work that a handful (I also know a handful when I see) of community members are doing. Lets face it, they are assholes (and I know assholes when I see them)! We can play the game and say things like... "you have the right to your opinion" or "to each their own" but lets face it - the people you are speaking of are dickheads! Instead of true action that really impacts and promotes change, they prefer to sit around and complain - ripping apart those who are actually doing the work. Like I've said before.... put on the fucking dress yourself and get on stage if you can do a better job. Otherwise, fuck off! Everyone else who is enjoying the performances on Friday night's or who enjoy the benefits of the hard-work of Board members and community organizers... please come to their defense. A little hug of thanks or card of appreciation would go a very long way. To those always complaining, you can suck on my duct tape! Thank you Tora Hyman for your very detailed email... speaking of Hyman - I'm outta here... I've got things to take care of!
All you need to do is email Savanaugh at: Savanaugh@club717.ca and answers will be provided anonymously in the following newsletter. Ask away - IF YOU DARE!!!!!
Lets have fun with this article everyone... submit your questions to savanaugh@club717.ca! She promises not to use your name! It is all in fun... so fire away! |

Come Out and Support Your Community Just by Eating!
The AIDS Committee of Durham Region will be holding its annual 'A Taste For Life' event onwww.aidsdurham.com - so be sure to check out our website.
Wednesday April 27, 2011. 'A Taste For Life' is one of our agencies most important fund raisers each year. By having dinner at one of the participating restaurants they will donate 25% of every sale that evening. You'll be supporting those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS here in Durham and it will not cost you anything but the cost of a regular meal out. In addition, you'll have an opportunity to win some great prizes like two round-trip VIA Rail tickets to Montreal! Restaurants participating are; Viva Burritos (Oshawa), DeSiam Thai (Whitby), The Thirsty Monk (Oshawa) and Buffet World (Whitby) and more restaurants to be announced in the coming weeks via our website.
I would like to invite the LGBTQ community to come and join us at Buffet World in Whitby. Buffet World is inexpensive, good food and a large restaurant that is friendly and supportive of our community. Hope you will invite your friends and we can have a good turn out that evening!
Wear Pink!!!
On April 13th ADR encourages everyone to wear a pink shirt for 'The Day of Pink'. Day of Pink is the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination and Homophobia in schools and communities.
We invite everyone to celebrate diversity by wearing a pink shirt and by encouraging others in their workplaces, organizations, communities and schools to do the same. We want to see lots of pink that day!
Show, Dance and Honour
On Saturday April 9, 2011 from 9 p.m. until closing ACDR will hold its monthly Show & Dance at Club 717. This show and dance will be held in honour and memory of Steve O'Connor. Steve was a founding member of Club 717 and ACDR. There will be NO COVER CHARGE for this event, but donations will be thankfully received. There will be door prizes and the raffle as usual.
Glenda, Ivanna and Donatella will be performing, so come join us in honouring and remembering Steve!
"After Stonewall" at DMAN's - Men's Night OUT
On Saturday April 23, 2011 the DMAN group will enjoy a potluck dinner while watching the documentary "After Stonewall". After Stonewall takes an in-depth look at the events, successes and challenges the LGBTQ community has experienced since the Stonewall riots in 1969. 'After Stonewall' is the follow-up to "Before Stonewall" which we watched at the March 'Men's Night OUT'. Taking the Lead - Pet Care Message - by Corry

I believe that our pets choose us. They come into our lives to teach us lessons, to help us find our way and to bless us with unconditional love.
The death of a pet can be just as traumatic as the death of any other loved one. For some people, their pet is their confidant, their best friend, the family that they choose.
These past few months have been very difficult for me since I have experienced the death of not only many of my furry clients due to illness or old age but also my grandmother.
I've been blessed to have animals to teach me to laugh more, to play more, and to live each day, not merely exist. Pets teach me have a sense of wonder, a sense of adventure and to be kind to myself.
They teach me to love with an open heart, to forgive quickly and to worry less. To be carefree, feisty and independent. That it is okay to eat cookies, in short they teach me how to live.
Shakespeare said "He who lacks time to grieve, lacks time to mend" So for those of you who have been touched by the death of someone you love and have heard "get over it, it's just a pet" Remember all the wonderful lessons they taught you, the unconditional love they gave you and celebrate their life.
Wishing you peace.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you. This column is all about you and your pets. Keep the questions coming to Have a pawsitive day! Corry Hamilton |

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
APRIL IN THE GARDEN
Over the passed year I have talked about garden design, garden care, garden planning, etc. So I am not going to dwell on these issues at this time unless someone makes a request for such information. But I will share with you three plants that I will be trying in my garden this year. They are relatively new, in the last couple of years, so they should be available at local garden centres, but I will share with you, where I purchase them, when I find them. It's still a bit early to go shopping. Maybe the end of April??? One can hope!!!!
I have had in my garden for over 12 years, a Yellow Fumewort - Corydalis lutea. It self seeds and I have pockets of plants that come up here and there. If they are in a spot where I do not want them, I pull them out. I do not find the plant invasive, but it does travel around the garden, which I do not mind.
So there is a new fumewort, called 'Berry Exciting'; it's latin name being Corydalis 'Berry Exciting'. It has bold. brilliant gold fern like foliage that really shows up in the shade. The attractive wine-purple fragrant blooms flower from May into early summer with some repeat bloom in the fall. It is a vigorous grower with more heat tolerance than other fumeworts. It grows about a foot tall and a foot and one half in spread. It takes full to part shade and will grow in most average soils, It is hardy in zone 5, where we are in Oshawa. And it could be used in the border, in containers, as edging, in the woodland and as a specimen. I will plant this in the garden, but I want to try it in a large pot with some other flowers, to see how well it does.
Another plant that I wish to try this year is Crimson Ruby Japanese Barberry Shrub. It glows a beautiful burgundy red all summer long and deepens its color in full hot sun. After the season is over, it will go dormant till spring. In spring yellow flowers emerge along with the appearance of the red leaves. The yellow flowers will then produce bright red fruit. In the fall the leaves turn to an orange -scarlet color making this a shrub with 3 seasons of color variation. Crimson Ruby grows 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide and is cold hardy to zone 4. And it is tolerant of most soils, as long as it is not too wet. It does have small thorns, so wear gloves when planting it. Dogs, cats and other pets do not bother with it. And deer, rabbits and moose don't bother it, if that is a problem for you in your garden..
Barberries are available in other colors and sizes; they are fairly tough shrubs to use as a specimen, or to plant in groups or to even use them to plant a hedge.
There is a series of roses called "Knockout Roses". The Knockout Rose that I am familiar with is a hot purple-rose color. They thrive in tough places with not too much care. But if you water and fertilize , they will certainly perform for you, from early summer into late fall. But now there is a whole lineup of "Knockout Roses" that are available in various colors and sizes. These roses are hardy. They come back every year. Disease and bugs do not seem to bother them. So I am going to try one of the lower growing ground cover types. All I have to do is find them!!
So what could you be doing in the garden this month???
1. Dig up, divide and replant perennials.
2. Deadhead daffodils after flowering.
3. As soon as soil is workable, dig over the vegetable garden in preparation for spring planting.
