Android App Developers should be held accountable

Google's response to the recent discovery of malicious apps in the Android market place is proof that we're now entering a new phase in malware mitigation. Can you imagine Microsoft automatically pushing an executable to (part of) its user-base with no opt-out option?

This essay is not about the privacy implications at play here. New platforms mean new challenges but this scenario also presents us with some new opportunities.

One of these challenges obviously is keeping malicious apps outside of the market. Some have mentioned charging a higher fee for an Android market developer account -- which allows uploading apps -- as a good means of upping the threshold.

While the idea has some merit, it's hard to envision it becoming successful in an underground world which is dominated by stolen credit cards.

Instead, Google (and others) should spend more effort confirming the identities of those who publish apps.

The vast majority of malicious domains out there are registered with fake credentials. However, when it comes to handing out certificates things are generally much better. There's not a huge amount of fraud in this area.

This has a great deal to do with the amount of scrutiny most certificate authorities put their clients through. Though the high(er) prices that certificates cost will certainly help as well.

It's the combination of the two that's extremely potent. High prices mean little when someone can easily get away with using a stolen credit card.

While the combination is the most secure solution, it may stand in the way of business strategies. Having said that, I'm strongly convinced that more scrutiny over market developers' identities will be of great help to the ecosystem.

Not only will it help deter cyber criminals, it will also help catch them in case they try something malicious.

A Message Club 717 President - Jason Allmanfrom Ivanna

Dear Club 717,

Wow! What can i say but 5 months has passed by like no tomorrow, and all I can say is that is was a joy working with all of you! As of last week, i am no longer the Queen of Club 717. I know some of you are asking to yourselves, what happened or how did this happen or other little questions are floating around that people want answered. I want you all to know that it was a mutual agreement between the Board and Myself, and the reason i say that is, being Queen is not easy. It has its ups and downs and i know that there is a lot of stress that is involved with it. To be honest with you, i don't really feel that i am ready to take on this responsibility alone. It is hard work. The 5 months that i have been Queen at Club 717, i can say it has shown me a lot. I was able to work with so many great Queens and Kings and it is my honor to say thank you for being there with support. I will still continue to do shows at Club 717, but just as a House Queen! I want to personally thank Bianca, for putting up with me, and for all the hard work that she has done to try and help me make the club a better place. Without Bianca, i would have not made it as far as i did!!

I want to extend a huge thank you out to all the performers for last month. February was an amazing month. Just a quick recap on things. February 4th we had Madge's Country Show with Madge, Ruby and I. We had our Valentines weekend on February 11th and 12th. I really would like to thank Twiggy for helping with the decorating, and special thanks goes out to Lauren Lovelace, Chardonney Dubbery, and Twiggy for getting amazing prizes for the raffle draw. On the 11th of February we had our Naughty Valentines Show, which involved myself, Francesca and Twiggy, and all i can say is wow!! What a night. Then on the 12th we had our Valentines Dance, and we had some amazing food. Thanks goes out to John Duvall and Twiggy for helping out with the food. The 18th of February we had Ineeda Tips Davenport and friends, and i really want to say thank you to Billie and Pat Mycrotch for helping me put out an awesome Show. I had the wonderful opportunity last month to go downtown to Toronto to be apart of Candice's Star Search and all i can say is i loved each and every moment of it. Last month as well i was called upon by my friend Vicki Licks-u to also come be apart of the Door Prize Show at Zelda's and each time i go it is also a blast there as well.

Big Mama Candice's 54th Birthday was a blast! We had performers come out from Toronto and we also had Kings and Queens from our club also participate in it as well. Happy Birthday Big Mama. Lots of Love!!

Now for March!! We have so many exciting events coming up!! It is really exciting!! March 4th - We will be having an Evening of Class with Ivanna Tip Davenport and Jeanette Dupree. March 11th - is Big Daddy Benn Dover's Birthday Switch Show!! This is going to be fantastic, they do a awesome job every year!! March 12th - We have a Special Saturday Night Treat for all of you!! We have Clint Lyckher and Ivory Towers coming down to perform for all of you, and that will be hosted by Ivanna Tip Davenport. Can't wait to see them perform!! March 18th and 19th -  These two nights are both nights that you will not want to miss!! For the first time ever, I will be putting on a huge stage production and we are going wipe you all away and amaze you all. The stage production is going to be Twiggy's House of Burlesque!! Come on out and see the Madame and her Girls perform for you!! You think you have seen some of your favorite Queens go all out!! Wait till you see this!! Come out and see your favorite Queens: Twiggy, Chardonney, Francesca, Ivanna Tip, Ivy, and Rina!! I promise you it will be a night you will never forget!!

Sandra's Message:

Acupuncture and Sinusits !!

Have you ever wondered about whether acupuncture can be used to treat sinusitis? Sinusitis, sinus congestion, asthma, and allergic symptoms as well as many other diseases can be helped by the use of acupuncture and herbal medicine. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the sinus cavities, which are found around the eyes inside the skull. Both allergy and viral infections can trigger sinusitis and sinus headache, as well as exposure to directly irritating substances such as smoke and cosmetic fragrances. Sinus congestion or sinus pain can also be the result. Sinusitis and allergy symptoms are increasing in our society, and often require treatment with powerful drugs which cause a variety of side effects.

Allergy to inhaled pollutants and pollen also contribute to sinus diseases. Most modern cities have problems with air quality outdoors, and indoor air is subject to pollution by furnishings, household chemicals, cosmetics and pet dander. Symptoms of allergy and hypersensitivity may affect the body in the sinuses, the airways, the mucous membranes, the lungs or the skin. Some individuals develop problems in all of these areas. Sinus symptoms may include sinus congestion, watery or sticky discharges, sinus pain, and sinus headache and sinus pressure. Sinus inflammation can also trigger facial headaches as well as "migraine" type vascular headaches.

The use of acupuncture can be very helpful to reduce or eliminate the signs and symptoms of allergic and irritant sinusitis, sinus headache, sinus pain, and sinus congestion. Patients report that they can use fewer medications and feel better.

When you decide to undergo acupuncture for sinusitis, sinus headache, chronic sinus congestion, or sinus allergy, an individualized treatment program will be designed for your particular imbalance.

"Ask Savanaugh.... She'll Have Somethin to Say!"

* Reader Discretion Advised *

Ok, subheadlines like that almost guarantee you'll read this !!

The questions are beginning to role in for Savanaugh.  People are realizing the insight and wisdom that this broad in a dress can bring.  This girls been around and could teach you all a thing or two ya know!    So be sure to bring on the questions - those big life questions you have always pondered but never knew anyone with the wisdom to be able to answer them.

1). A certain drag king performer who wanted to remain anonymous but whose name takes on a rather common homosexual position has a problem.  Apparently this performer really has the hots for Savanaugh but is in a relationship with someone else.  He wants to know what to do.

The answer my horny little colleague is very simple - fuck her!  That's right bend her over and make proper use of that name of yours.  Don't worry she won't tell !

2).  This age old questions has come in a few times (excuse the pun).  Many of you whores want to know how to get cum stains out.  Out of curtains, furniture, clothing, your teenage son's bedding.  There really are many options here and I will share.  First of all, don't be a whore!   If you don't want cum stains all over the place, stop getting on your knees to every dick that presents itself.  Knowing that for most of you, this is not really an option (I've seen half of the club at the bath house on any given night).  A second option is to take it in the mouth and spit for fuck sakes.  Keep a cum bucket nearby and fill it up.  For some of you, it will have to be emptied once a week.  But think about the financial enterprise possibilities.  For all of the freaks out there - you could sell your weekly bucket of cum for their own pleasure.  Or sell it to the bar... there must be a martini there somewhere!    It would be a community service you are providing and your personal possessions remain clean!

3). A final question sent in is regarding over-consumption of alcohol and dealing with hangovers.  This bitch doesn't have time for foolishness and amateurs.  Don't stop drinking you stupid fucks.  A permanent state of buzz is the perfect solution to a hangovers!   I haven't been sober in 10 years!

Lets have fun with this article everyone... submit your questions  to savanaugh@club717.ca!  She promises not to use your name!   It is all in fun... so fire away!

Taking the Lead - Pet Care Message - by Corry

Q: With spring just around the corner, I was wondering if there is an environmentally friendly option to cleaning up the backyard full of dog poop.

A: While the Durham Region's green bin program doesn't accept pet waste, that doesn't mean that you can't compost your pet's poop. You will need to buy or build a separate composter and follow the same general directions that you do for your food/yard waste. You may want to add some "red wigglers" to the compost to speed up decomposition and because it is full of organic matter, the worms will be very happy. You can also compost your small animal bedding and cat litter, provided that your litter is made up of wood, corn, wheat... You will not be able to compost any clay litters. Be patient, as it can take up to 18 months for your compost to be just right and you will only be able to use it on flowers, shrubs, and trees, not on your edible plants because of bacteria and other microorganisms.

Another option is to install a pet septic system. They come in a variety of sizes depending on how many animals you have. Basically, they utilize bacteria and enzymes to break down the pet waste into a liquid that is reabsorbed into the soil. It will generally work well in all types of soil, the exception being non draining clay soil. A pet septic system is very convenient, sanitary, odourless, and free of insects. As long as you remember to add the waste digester (bacteria/enzyme powder) + water, you will have a very effective method to dispose of your pet's waste. The Doggie Dooley Company has been in business for over 40 years and is very well respected in the pet industry.

By utilizing either of these clean up options, you will be saving yourself time and the environment, but most of all you'll be able to enjoy your poop free yard.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you. This column is all about you and your pets. Keep the questions coming to

Empowering Youth Today to be Leaders of Tomorrow

Gay-Straight Alliances (G.S.A.'s) have created powerful connections to fight against homophobia and exclusion. Student led, many who initiate these groups find they lack guidance, training and resources. PFLAG Durham Region has collaborated with community groups to ensure student leaders of G.S.A.'s are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to be successful. We are currently fundraising in order to provide a 4-day G.S.A. Leadership Camp this summer in Durham. It will be the first of its kind in Ontario and is designed to help youth develop the leadership skills and resiliency necessary for them to become change agents in their schools, families, and communities. Grant applications have been submitted to Community One and the City of Oshawa.

On April 2nd, 2011 PFLAG Durham Region will be hosting An Evening of Hollywood Glamour at Club Carib. A spectacular evening is planned with a scrumptious dinner and a "Le Cage aux Folle" show. Tickets are $50 per person in advance and will benefit our chapters work and the Durham Region GSA Leadership Camp. For more information on the leadership camp or to obtain tickets to the fundraiser call 905-231-0533 or email DurhamOn@pflagcanada.ca

We look forward to seeing you all there as well as at our upcoming sharing meetings. Visit our Facebook page for information on all our upcoming events: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=8933318069

MARCH  IN  THE  GARDEN

A TRIP TO VALLARTA  BOTANICAL  GARDENS

The swimming area was at the bottom of this 1100 foot mountain, so we decided to head there first.  The river was in a ravine located between two mountains.  The water was clear, cool and inviting,  but not enough for us to go swimming.  The huge boulders and slabs of smooth rock surrounded by tropical trees. babbling water with the warm sun filtering through enticed us to stay and enjoy the moment.  But once we discovered the sign for the trail labelled  "DIFFICULT  AND HIKING  BOOTS  ADVISABLE",   we knew our immediate destination.

Once we climbed over the huge boulder with the help of some tree roots to cling to,  we realized that we were on a man made path.  As the path ascended, we realized that we were zigzagging up the mountain.  About every 30 to 40 feet, the path would make a sharp 180 degree turn.  On the right was the mountain with palms, ferns, mango and avocado trees, and many tropical trees that I did not recognize.  On the left, was a drop into the gorge where the river was.  One false move and you could be in serious trouble.  We huffed and puffed our way to what we thought was the top of the mountain, when we started to descend .  As it turned out, we jigged and jagged and way up and down the turning paths  for about forty minutes.  As we came into more sunshine the vegetation was changing into more desert conditions with agaves and cactus growing wild in the forest.  The path led us up to the back of a building, where we popped from the path unto a deck where there was an info centre and washrooms, right where we first arrived, into the centre of the Vallarta Botanical Gardens.

The first stop when we arrived at the Vallarta Gardens, was the restaurant.  A tall wooden chalet like building, with clay tiles on the roof and red, orange, hot pink and white bougainvillea, climbing and cascading this 30 to 40 foot building.  We climbed the Mexican tiled stairs to the upper floor, where refreshments were  being served, on the deck surrounding the whole building.  When we looked out there was a drop of a few hundred feet, where  a path and river could be seen in the distance  surrounded by tropical forest.  Closer to the building were manicured gardens, paths, the orchid and vanilla conservatory, the tree fern grotto, the agave hills trail and many more areas in which to explore.

The waiter brought us our complimentary hibiscus tea with tiny orchid flowers that hung on the to edge of the glass.  This tea was sweetened with agave nectar and was really quite tasty.  Then we ordered our nachos and beer, served on clay baked plates with their delicious  avocado dip, salsa  and hot  spicy oil dip.  There was an iron rod attached to every post that supported the roof.  From the end of these rods, hanging baskets of fresh fruit, attracted many colourful birds of all sizes and even some butterflies.  This truly was a beautiful setting sitting almost in the canopy of the jungle, on a warm sunny day without a care in the world......  But that was when it was decided to take that path down to the river.  And sandals and mountain climbing are not the best mix. But we survived!!

After lunch, the gift shop on the main floor had many typical Mexican souvenirs.  Colourful dishes and plates, silver  bracelets, tablecloths, etc........ but they did not have any books for sale about the Botanical Gardens that I could see.  Up stairs in the restaurant  there was  library of very old books, which  I did not stop to look at, or I would still be there.

Across from the restaurant, was the Orchid house with ferns and vines climbing up the wooden poles and trellises.  Orchids were in pots, in tropical trees, growing on the wooden structure itself.  The ceiling and walls were the vines and plants growing on the structure.

Beside the Orchid house was a garden of  pathways that turned and intermingled, dividing the area into smaller gardens with some benches and rock formations on which to sit.  This little garden were planted with collections of similar plants.  There was a fern area, a palm tree area, and palms can be very small to very large and tree like.  This is where a gardener was walking around with a backpack tank filled with water, watering many of the tiny plants in the numerous decorative planters that were placed throughout the gardens.

There was a large raised pond where water lilies and  water lotus  were showing there colours, while tropical fish hid beneath their leaves.  A giant concrete painted water serpent  was the King in this water garden.  And there were  benches and colourful plantings in this courtyard garden, where one could linger to enjoy the scenes.

On the way back up the road to the entrance, each side of the road bordered  a four foot wide garden area where collections of agaves, small ornamental palms, aloe vera, vinca, roses, cactus and tree ferns to mention a few, adorned the cobblestone and river rock road.  At the top of the hill, was a small rustic log building where we entered and payed our fee of 50 pesos or 5 dollars American.  With this you received a map of the gardens.  There is much more to see  here. When we return, we will visit other garden areas and nature paths.

Large black iron gates at the entrance, really show off the mass plantings of blue agaves.  There were cabs arriving to take some people back to their hotels.  We  were returning by bus, the way in which we came.   We caught the bus in Old Vallarta and for 22 pesos, we were wisked up the mountain road, clinging to the edge of the road.  I was so glad that the driver had driven this many times before.  The bus was full on the way back, but we managed to get a seat.  And in no time at all, we were back walking on the Malecon Boardwalk again.

If you are in Puerto Vallarta and decide to visit the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, here is the info:

telephone  322-223-6182

info@vallartabotanicalgardensas.org

No matter where you are, you are always surrounded by natural vegetation, landscaped gardens or potted gardens at the front of the hotel you are staying at.  So take note.  If you see something really impressive, you may want to take some of those ideas into your own gardens.

Till next time,

Something to Say - by Savanaugh

For a living, I work with at-risk youth who for various reasons (often out of their control) have found themselves struggling to accomplish what would seem to be the very simplest of life tasks for the rest of us.  It is a daily struggle working with a group of youth who often appear to have a blatant disregard for social rules and values.  Like a trooper and utilizing every skill developed over  the years, I continue on - hoping to make a difference in their lives.

Recently however, I've totally found my jaw dropping while observing the actions of all youth in our community.  The problem is epidemic and does not only apply to those few students I work with daily.  Observe youth around you, and often you will find an absence of common sense and sound judgment.  From the inability to perform simple tasks and responsibilities, being constantly immersed in drama, very poor choices to very rude and crude behaviour - you will find youth everywhere around you being well... DICKS!   A youth culture driver by the two letter word:  ME.   This is a culture that is driver by their primate need to be the centre of attention with a complete disregard for the impact of their behaviours on anyone else.

I've been struggling to not pass judgment and have been forced to dig deep to like and understand these alien creatures.  Why is it that at work, I have the patience and skills but when dealing in social and public situations, it is wearing very thin.  Savanaugh has been this close to bitch-slapping and wiping the new out of these ignorant children!

The answer lies in something we all intuitively know about teenagers and young adults... they are ALL BRAIN DEAD!   Now wait, I'm going somewhere with this!    Whenever we ask youth why they just made their ridiculous decision, we will often get the response "I don't know."  Professionally I've come to realize that they truly don't know why they just did what they did.  BRAIN DEAD!      It is a theory that I've had for years but with no academic basis to support it.  All I knew was that youth up to around 22 or 23 often make irrational decisions.  I've always called in being brain dead!

We need to be realistic here.  It is not just this generation.  If all of us think about the hell we put our families through when we were this age.  How many very poor decisions did we make that to adults appeared insane.  How often did we not actually know WHY we just did it.  Yes my friends, we were BRAIN DEAD as well!

Recently the world of brain research has made some major discoveries which really support my brain dead theory.  It has been discovered that the portion of the brain (frontal cortex) that is responsible for rational decision making is not fully developed until the age of 24 years old.  They are not in fact brain dead, but not even developed yet.  The portion of the brain that gives us that little voice saying "this might not be a good idea" or the voice that says "maybe I'm being a little impulsive here" does not even exist for most youth.  Sight everyone... it is not just us.   Often they can't even help themselves.  Impulsively an action is made, with no brain voice to stop them.  Later on, they regret the decision and don't understand why they even did it.

So what does this mean for us?  For one thing, we can't take their actions personally.  Secondly, we have to buy them a little time to fully develop their rational and ethical skills.  Finally, we need to wait until they are about 24 years old before we can actually wipe the new and fresh off their pretty little faces!

There ya have it......
