Do you use AVG Antivirus? Are you sure ??
We've noted for a while that the practices of rogue antivirus software have started to mimic those of legitimate antivirus software vendors. But a new version of FakeXPA scareware take things a bit further: posing as a legitimate commercial AV package, AVG Antivirus 2011.
Microsoft's Malware Protection Center issued a warning for the phony AVG program on Monday, noting that the application is standard issue scareware that claims to scan for malware, displays fake 'detection' warnings about infections, then asks for money to remove the non-existent malware. Like other scareware, FakeXPA is known, in cases, to install its own malware - variants of the Alureon Trojan horse program.
Screen shots of the FakeXPA malware shows a legitimate seeming GUI with the AVG Anti Virus logo prominently displayed. AVG Antivirus 2011 is one of many names used by the malware, with small variations in branding and user interface distinguishing each.
Rogue anti virus has blossomed into a multi million dollar business in the last decade using aggressive promotion techniques like search engine optimization and web-based pop-up ads to trick unwitting Web surfers into downloading their scareware.

Coopting a legitimate product's name and logo are just the latest in a series of steps by rogue anti malware vendors to mirror the features and actions of legitimate anti virus software makers. In addition, fake AV firms have also introduced services like localization, online customer support (with real humans!) and even AV-Test like product benchmarking to serve their "customers" and increase profits.

President's Message
ey Folks!
February is here, and it will mark a fresh month with new events and new ideas. J The Board of Directors, Patrons, Performers, and yes the volunteers all of us seem to finally be shaking their turkey-blues off, this month there are many events planned, like our ©© Valentine's Dance ©©, February 12, no matter if you're single, a couple, or just that third wheel.
I would first like to personally thank Donny Richards and Krazy Ray's Karaoke team for coming out and showing us a great final night!! At this time the Board of Directors has decided to cancel Karaoke. Right now we are currently looking into other possibilities for Thursday nights, but for now, we're offering $10.00 pitchers of Draught beer on Thirsty Thursdays. If you have any suggestions please email them to us at entertainment@club717.ca
Our LGBTQ community is filled with stories of inspiration, and of people and businesses that inspire us. In 2010, 8 partners came together to search for those inspiring people and businesses and to honour them in return. With much pride we present the community with the Inspire Awards. Be sure to check out the website at www.inspireawards.ca and see if you would like to nominate anyone, or check it out for information!
Special Thank you goes out to the ladies from MoJo Vino restaurant in Whitby !! They showed up at our recent fundraiser and donated a $50 gift certificate for the raffle. What a great prize !! $50 Gift Certificate for an evening of fine dinning !! Thank You Mojo Vino !!
Well folks, until next month!
All the best,
Jason Allman

Treasurer's Report
| |
Hello,
For those members that did not attend the General Members Meeting (GMM), the Board of Directors announced that two events were being discontinued.
For the past several months, attendance at the monthly Pot Luck and a Movie Night has been steadily declining. Unfortunately, it had come down to myself and Warren bringing food, and then only 3 or 4 people showing up.
Going forward, the Pot Lucks will now only be held at special times and occasions through out the year, such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If we get some patrons that want to have more than this, and there is a resurgance in interest then the board can revisit the event.
The other event that was discontinued is Karaoke Night. It is a situation similar to the Pot Luck/Movie Nights. For the past several months, attendance has been declining, and those that did attend, were not spending money. Therefore, we have been running at a loss for many months with no signs of improvement.
Just as with Pot Luck, if there is a resurgence in interest for Karaoke, then the board can revisit possibility of having Karaoke again.
I am not happy to report these things to you, but the Board has to look at the overall financial condition of the Club. The decision was not made lightly to end the events. Karaoke was allowed to run for several months at a loss in hopes of improved attendance. Unfortunately, attendance didn't improve and that is why these decisions had to be made.
On a happier note, we have some great events scheduled for most Saturday nights in the next few months, and even some Sundays.
So, the Board is trying to gain some financial momentum, and provide you with some great entertainment and fun.

Sandra's Message:
Snow Shoveling Tips !!

- Warm-up, before beginning any snow removal, warm-up for five to ten minutes to get the joints moving and increase blood circulation. A good warm-up should include stretches for the back, shoulders, arms and legs. This will ensure that your body is ready for action.
- Don't let the snow pile up. Removing small amounts of snow on a frequent basis is less strenuous in the long run.
- Pick the right shovel. Use a lightweight push-style shovel. If you use a metal shovel, spray it with Teflon first so snow won't stick.
- Push, don't throw. Push the snow to one side and avoid throwing it as much as possible. If you have to throw, avoid twisting and turning - position yourself to throw straight at the snow pile.
- Bend your knees. Use your knees, leg and arm muscles to do the pushing and lifting while keeping your back straight.
- Take a break. If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest. Stop shoveling immediately if you feel chest or back pain.
- Go for regular massage therapy and chiropractic treatments to ensure your body is ready to handle the Canadian winters.

Taking the Lead - Pet Care Message - by Corry

One of the most common questions, I'm asked is about pet dental health. February is dental health month, so I thought I would pass along some newer products you may not have heard about.
Good dental health is dependant on a number of factors, including diet, tooth morphology, salivary flow, and an acid-alkaline balance. Since more than 70% of pets have some form of oral health concerns, prevention is key.
Brushing your pet's teeth is very effective and inexpensive. Most pets think of the flavoured toothpaste as a treat. The newest innovation is the Triple Pet toothbrush. It has 3 flexible heads, 2 of which are at 45 degree angles to quickly and effectively clean their teeth.
Next in the repertoire are the gels and sprays. They are available at a variety of price points and are also effective. Leba, Petzlife, and Tropiclean are all examples of sprays and gels. You may need to use them longer than 30days or use in conjunction with brushing for the best results. All of the sprays and gels contain alcohol, which for animals with pancreatitis can be harmful. Consult your vet if you are considering using these products.
Finally, there is Wysong Dentatreat. It is a natural dental supplement that is tasty and effective. It can be sprinkled on food or made into yummy toothpaste. It contains a special blend of cheeses that help neutralize the acids which contribute to plaque formation and increase salivary flow. It also contains apple polyphenols which have an antibacterial function and since bacteria is responsible for bad breath; it helps to freshen it.
Finding the right dental product for your pet can be a challenge. Remember to be consistent and results will follow. Your pet's health is too important not to take seriously.
Here's hoping your pet's kisses will be clean and fresh.

| "What is Swinging?" - by Tammy
Most people have the wrong idea of what a swing club is. Many think that it's just one big orgy and you check your clothes at the door and then dive right in, doing anything you want with whomever you like. At Club Sinful this is COMPLETELY not the case! More than anything else, Club Sinful is a social club where you'll meet and form friendships with some of the nicest people you've ever met. In some cases, you'll form bonds that will last a lifetime.
Many of us have heard of "swinging". Okay....some of you may even need to strike from your mind the visual of the 70's swinger. You know the one...the post-dinner party, long-side-burned hubby who languidly fondles his neighbor's wife upon the shag carpeting of his suburban, living room floor; all the while with the sound of his wife's giggles erupting from the bedroom down the hall. For many swingers today, the "lifestyle" is social ... and it may or may not include a partner "swap". Today's swinger is as evolved as today's video games. A long way from the video game "Pong".
Swinging, in a mainstream sense, has become something of a social-sexual phenomenon in recent years. People from all walks of life are attracted to the "'style", with the highest influx being 30-40 something, married, middle to upper class, professionals hitting the scene for the first time. In a society that promotes sexuality, secure couples and singles have been able to develop a sense of sexual maturity. Good communication and honesty about "what turns you on" has led to a point where exploration has become a popular pastime. Don't be shy.. drop by sometime and check us out! Febuary 26th is Red Hot Night @ Club Sinful, located at Club 717 on the last Saturday of the month.
See you there, Tammy |
Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
Hello Club 717, With the Bank of Canada's meeting to discuss prime (overnight lending rate) and the announcement from the Finance minister Jim Flaherty on upcoming changes to mortgage lending guidelines, January was all abuzz on the happenings in the mortgage industry. Some of the key results were Bank of Canada's decision to maintain prime at 1% due to slower then expected economic recovery of some countries, along with mortgage amortization periods being reduced to 30 years from 35 years, the maximum amount Canadians can borrow to refinance their mortgages will be lowered to 85 per cent from 90 per cent and the government set to withdraw its insurance backing on lines of credit secured on homes, such as home equity lines of credit. Even though changes to lending guidelines are not set to take effect until March 18, 2011 with the change in insurance on home equity lines on April 18, 2011, past experience has shown that CMHC will adopt these new guidelines prior to the effective dates. To learn more about these new developments please feel free to contact me... Happy February!

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
FEBRUARY IN THE GARDEN Well now that winter has raised its snowy cold head, I'm sure there are not too many people out in their gardens, unless its absolutely necessary. So once again I have decided to talk about garden design, in particular, Herb Gardens. Herbs as with most plants have been around for a very very long time. If you read the bible, there is mention of various herbs used in various ways. If you research herb garden design, you will find that there is a long history of design and herbal uses. Think of all the teas that one may purchase today; for flavour, for sleeping, for dieting, just for many ailments. Not only as teas, but for the bath, for eating, for making vinegars, for drying, and even for dyeing. But on top of all their uses, they can look fabulous in a garden setting because of their textures, heights, colours and because many are easy to grow. If you want a low maintenance garden, a herb garden, or one with herbs would be a great place to start. So for those of you who already have a garden, I am going to describe how to create a 6 foot by 6 foot ornamental herb garden. For those of you just starting out, this 6 foot square garden could be blown up to the proportions that you need for your own garden. If your garden is rectangular, you could produce half of the square design, but divide those sections further , as they will be larger. Once you have decided on the location of this 6 foot square, you need to remove any plant material. Any sunny and sheltered area will suffice. Use string and canes or stakes to mark the corners. I am suggesting the use of bricks for this project. Use a spade the wrong way round, to cut along side the line. This way the spade goes into the soil vertically, giving a nice clean edge against which to set the border of bricks. Once you have edged this square with a row of bricks, make to brick paths that cross in the centre. Your 6 foot square, will have a 6 foot brick cross( a plus sign) with a double row of bricks, as this is a path for you to walk through and on. Traditionally herb garden have a sundial in the centre. But you may opt for a birdbath, sculpture, a tall narrow pot, etc. If you find the middle, where the paths cross , to be wobbly, you could use a square patio stone, to give it more stability. So now you have a 6 foot square, divided into four smaller squares by the brick paths with a sundial in the centre. In each of these four squares, draw a line in the soil from the middle to a corner in each of these four sections. You are creating planting triangles. Now your four squares are 8 triangles. In each of these triangles, you plant, herbs that you like, or the ones that I suggest. It is good to plan this on paper first, so that you know ahead of time what goes where. Each triangle should be number from #1 to #8. In triangle # 1 - plant 2 fennels # 2 - plant 3 basils #3 - plant 3 chives #4 - plant 3 dill #5 - plant 3 sweet marjoram #6 - plant 3 thyme #7 - plant 5 golden marjoram #8 - plant 3 sage And on each of the outer corners, prepare four large pots for planting and place them on those corners. In pot #1 plant 3 parsley; in pot #2 plant 3 apple mint; in pot #3 plant 6 red basil and in pot #4 plant 3 rosemary. After you have finished planting and watering everything in well, it is a good idea to spread a thin layer of peat or compost between the plants. Mulching helps to keep weeds down, improves the soil by adding organic matter to it, and insulates from the heat in summer and cold in winter and helps the soil to retain moisture. And it looks good. Some of these herbs are perennial, and some are annuals. You will have to replace the annuals every year unless you opt for an all perennial herb garden. Dills, basil, parsley and rosemary will need to be replaced. And if you have a spot in your home, you can winter that rosemary inside and even train it into a clipped topiary. If you were going to expand on this idea to make a much larger and grander garden of a similar design, you could plant small shrubs, perennials, roses, whatever you desire. On a larger scale I would do a lot with boxwood hedging to create those shapes and then plant inside those shapes. Where the triangle is surrounded by brick, I would surround it with the boxwood and use the bricks for pathways throughout the whole garden. Hopefully this gives you some inspiration. You are the creator in your own garden. And if you decide to do something like this, please go to the library, or look up online, herb garden design. Some of them are extremely intricate. Roses are red, violets are blue, and these go well, in a herb garden too! HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO ALL YOU BUDDING AND FULL BLOWN GARDENERS . Till next time, Charlie

Something to Say - by Savanaugh

Censorship... I believe to be one of the most evil words and concepts in our language. Don't get me wrong, there are times when government and institutions must have laws and policies in place preventing individuals to express themselves. When statements or actions are hateful and target particular groups, then we should not have the right to say them. That however should really be the extent of censorship.
Yet, we find ourselves being censored all of the time. Watch closely my friends! It is not the blatant "you can't say that or you can't do that" type of censorship. Instead we can find it hidden deep within our institutions and legal system. Powers that be are able to force their values and worldviews on us through technicalities. Not that they would not call it censorship... heavens no - they would call it "policy" and "regulations". "Razzle-dazzle" us with fancy footwork, slight-of-hand and convoluted language. Tap-dance around issues to present a sparkling, somewhat accurate yet distorted version of the truth. All the while, call the Chicago Musical style antics, policy and rules.
Explore deeper my friends. Yes, the rules exist. Well engrained within the very institutions our tax-paying dollars support. Look everywhere and you will find regulations, rules, policies designed to maintain status quo and reflect the values of a very small elite minority on all of our behalf. Heath care, legal, education... all publically funded institutions with policy after policy designed to censor! To make sure one perspective and voice is heard. To make sure the apple-cart is not disrupted. To make sure those who are in power and control, will continue to do so.
So watch closely around you my friends. If the dance seems far to choreographed, if the sparkle seems to cloud the truth, if you think you just witnessed a slight-of-hand... you probably have been duped with full intention. Call it out... speak your mind... ask the questions... topple that apple cart. Better yet, don yourself a sparkling jacket and top hat... and start your own Chicago musical routine. They will start tapping and dancing along and suddenly realized... shit, the tables have been turned!!!!
There ya have it.....

Reel World - by Kevan Latrace
And the envelope please...... So the nominees for the 2011 Oscars are out and I actually have had time to see several of the Best Picture nominees - not always an easy feat these days, with the pool having been increased from 5 films to 10 last year. Here then are the nominees this year.... Black Swan A stylish looking thriller set in the world of ballet. Natalie Portman is looking like a lock for Best Actress, and the film may score a few other artistic nods, but don't expect this one to walk away with the top prize. The Fighter Honestly one of the best movies I saw this year....dragged my husband to it and he loved it as well. Barring any freak outcomes, this movie should score for Best Supporting Actor for Christian Bale, and Best Supporting Actress for EITHER Melissa Leo or Amy Adams, who both deliver stellar performances. Had the group only been one of 5, this definitely would have been one of the ones standing! Inception The lack of any acting or directing nominations plays against this film, but don't be suprised to see it clean up in areas like editing, special effects and sound. I think director Christopher Nolan is the Speilberg of the current generation - it will be years before the Academy can catch up with what he is doing. The Kids Are All Right Why is this film here? Probably one of the most boring films I saw in the past year. Annette Bening is getting lots of press and promo that this could be her year at the Oscars, but the prospect seems a little dimmer after Natalie Portman beat her to the Screen Actors Guild award last weekend. However, stranger things have happened.....remember, neither of the stars of this picture - Benning or Julianne Moore - have an Oscar, but Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock each have one. The King's Speech My personal favorite film of the year - superb cast, excellent script, great costumes....what more could you ask? Colin Firth seems to have a lock on Best Actor, and when it happens it will be one of the most deserved in years. Would love to see this movie win Best Picture, but keep in mind it is a very British film in competition at the American awards.....and there is stiff competition from a little American film called.... The Social Network I really resisted this film for the longest time, since I really don't find Facebook terribly interesting...yes I have a profile, but I check it once every few weeks or so. When I did see the film, it left me a little underwhelmed....yes the script was great, it moved at a very good pace, but was it really everything that everybody made it out to be? I have always liked director David Fincher and of course Aaron Sorkin's script has been getting universal acclaim. Personally, I would love to see this film win for director and screenplay, but Best Picture go to The King's Speech. 127 Hours Honestly haven't seen it - but I think it is kinda fun that James Franco, the star of the film and a host of the Oscars with Anne Hathaway, can now use it as a monologue of jokes about the length of the Oscar telecast. Toy Story 3 The mere prescence of Toy Story 3 in the Best Picture category pretty much guarantees it will walk away with Best Animated Feature. So no worries for the Pixar team for this one, they are going to get the one they really want in the first place. True Grit Remake of the classic western that got John Wayne his only Oscar. Directors Joel and Ethan Coen always deliver quality merchandise and are always popular with the Academy. It is a little odd that this film got absolutely no Golden Globe nominations, but got a huge number of Oscar nominations. Too many split opinions for this one to end up on top. Winter's Bone I am sure it is a good movie, but before the nominations, I hadn't even heard of it. Any thoughts? The Oscars are on Feb. 27 - make sure that you come to the club for the Annual Oscar Party.
