Donations Welcomed

I am sure most of our readers are aware of people less fortunate than us in the community.
At Club 717 we have a box for food donations. It all goes to the Aids Committee of Durham Region (ACDR). There is need for such items as: peanut butter, rice, canned goods etc.
Also, please note that there is a box to drop off your plastic bags which ACDR uses at its food bank. If one would rather make a monetary donation, the ACDR would very much appreciate it.
Thank You for considering the ACDR when you do your shopping.
Sincerely,
Steve O'Connor |

From the DJ Booth | |
Oh Yeah Club 717, I'm back!
For those that don't know who I am, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mike, otherwise known as DJ Gryphyn. I was a DJ in the club for 2009 and did many nights like the Men's Night events, Friday Night Shows, and many Saturday Dance Nights.
I'm so happy to be back spinning the tunes for the club. In case some of you wondered why I've been gone for the past year, I will let you know why. Back last year I had some issues with my eyes, plus I had my wedding to plan and some other things in my life that had to be taken care of. So I decided to take a break from the club to get things done. Well, I got married to my best friend who is now my husband and we couldn't be happier. The health issues still exist but I have a specialist and are working to reverse the damage to my body. I won't go into what the health issue's are, but I will say they are not life threatening. I've also been taking photography courses to expand my repertoire of talents and will be getting into that field as well in the future.
I've missed the club over the past year and I'm so happy to say I'm back. Like always I will always do my best to keep the music new and upbeat and strive to play your requests to the best of my abilities. However, keep in mind, we can't play what we don't have! If you see me come down from the DJ Booth don't be a stranger and say hi!
Sincerely; Michael See DJGRYPHYN mikejsee@hotmail.com |

President's Message
ey Folks!
It's hard to believe that it's been a whole month already, it just seems like I did one of these the other day! Time is flying by, and going to be very busy all month.
I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays! Remember to drink responsibility, use a "designated driver" type service rather than drinking and driving, it would suck not seeing you next Holiday Season!
With the Holiday Season comes the gift boxes at the back of the club, please help our food drive by bringing in non-perishable items, or gift cards for local grocery stores. As the month goes on, you will see more things popping up at the Club, like last year's toy tree. It will be up again this year. If you're bringing something for it, there will be zip-ties there for you to put it on the tree again like we did last year.
I am planning on attending this year's New Year's Eve bash, themed "GaGa Glam" It should be fun!
See you around,
Jason Allman

A Message from... Edna
To the Board , Staff, Performers and all the special Patrons of Club 717;
My farewell show last night, on November 26, 2010, was one of my highlights of performing at the Club. The generosity, the comradie, the laughs made the night very special. Not to mention the shooters!!And the flowers that I received from the Board and also from, Tommy
and Kelly, are adorning our kitchen table this morning. I know that Charlie's on the other side of the table somewhere.
A very special thank you goes out to all the performers who donated their time, money and friendship and talent. It was such a great show!! Thank you to Ben, Candice, Ineeda Tips, Savaughna, Tommy, Pat MYCrotch and Alex Xander. And a huge thankyou to Ruby and Madge for helping me through last night and all the other shows that we have done.
And then there is Donny and Jay who out did themselves with the stage, the musicality, that great poster and friendship. Without you guys, and all the support over the years, Edna would not be so special.
And then there is Roger. Thank you so much for that beautiful gift bag full of all those special goodies. You have always been there to support me through thick and thin. Your frinedship is special.
Then there is a matter of a bottle of champagne, that we have not consumed yet. Roy and Steve, you always add such a touch of elegance to any event. Thank you so much!!
Club 717 is a special second home to me. And it is because of all the people that go there. So I thank everyone for making me feel so welcome, loved and comfortable ....
I'll be seeing you around the Club....
Edna

Sandra's Message:
High Heels can alter your Anatomy
High heels can alter your Anatomy
Warning to all women and Drag Queens. Those pricy pumps may cost more than you think: They can actually change the shape of your body.
According to the findings, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, the incline of high heels causes the calf muscles to contract. And over time, this causes the muscle fibres to shorten and the Achilles tendon -- which connects the calf muscle to the bone -- to stiffen and become thicker.
Changes in calf muscles and tendons can be so pronounced -- and stretched beyond their normal range of movement -- that habitual high-heel wearers experience discomfort when they walk around in flatter shoes or sneakers.
So what's a drag queen to do? Give up high heels forever? We recommend less dire measures:
1. Engage in stretching exercises when you kick your heels off at the end of the day.
2. Talk to your Chiropractor about Orthotics and how they can help.
3. See your Massage Therapist for regular treatments and tips on proper stretches to keep you looking and feeling your best.
A SPECIAL NOTE: with Christmas fast approaching, we want to remind everyone that the best gift is the "Gift of Health". Give your loved ones a Massage Therapy Gift Certificate this Holiday Season - one size fits all! Contact us for more information.

A Message from the Vice President - Bob Wing
Hello, First off I would like to thank you all for your continued support of DAASC and Club 717. As your new Vice-President I look forward to working with the new board to improve and expand what we offer you at Club 717.
We should all keep in mind that DAASC is not just an organization that runs a bar for the LGBT community. We are a group of volunteers that administer a Social Club that takes in many aspects of servicing the LGBT commnity in Durham Region. We work with many organizations such as: PFLAG, Pride Durham and ACDR to name a few, in an attempt to make life a little easier for our men and women and youth in Durham Region.
It is very important that we continue to grow and prosper in order to offer support to our community. Club 717 is a safe place for gays and lesbians to gather and socialize and our goal is to continue offering a safe place for our members and patrons. This can only be achieved by all of us working together as a team.
I previously served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer and for a brief time as Staffing Director. My background is in the business field as I have operated a successful retail business in Durham Region for the past 25 years. I am an avid sports enthusiast and a person who has strong beliefs in what I think is right. My personal goal is to bring a sense of "operating as a business" to grow and improve the club and the association. Close ties with related organizations is important to grow as a "business". We as a board, work for you the members. So please, I encourage you to offer accolades, suggestions and constructive criticisms any time you feel the need.
We have an amazing group of dedicated volunteers at the DAASC and I hope you will all offer your support to them over the coming 12 months. Happy Holidays to all our fine members!! Kindest Regards Bob Wing Vice-President vicepresident@club717.ca

A message from Queen Ineeda Tips

| | Your New Queen of Club 717 |
Dear Club 717;
What can i say! It has been a busy month for me and I am excited to see the month of December come to life. I have been Queen for almost a month and I can say that it can sometimes be stressful, but in the end it is worth everything.
Now I know how busy it is to be a Queen and I am loving the adrenaline rush!! Let me Recap on what has happened so far.
On November 5th we had the Step Down Show for Benn Dover and Candice. November 6th
we had the opportunity to see the Queens this year compete for the Title of Queen. An awesome performance to everyone who participated. Chardonney, Lauren Lovelace, and Myself. On November the 12th we had the Past Queen's and King show and it was an honor to host it. On the 12th of December I had the honor of meeting an amazing performer from Toronto, Jeanette Dupree. November 19th was a special day for me cause it was my first big show at Club 717 as Queen and I want to thank everyone for making that a wonderful night. I would also like to thanks to Ivy and Francesca for being apart of my show and making it worth while.
This year I was able to attend my first Aid's Committee Dance and I can say it was heart warming and moving to see. The last thing that is happening in November is Edna's Farewell show, and I am sad to say but she will be dearly missed. Edna you have been an inspiration to the club and you have shown us all how much of a great person you. We Love you and will Dearly Miss You!
As December approaches, I am really looking forward to Celebrating it with my family at the Club. I was able to put the Christmas Tree up and was able to decorate it as well this year. Thank you to Twiggy and Bill
(Membership Director) for helping put the 15 foot tree together and thank you to Jean-Guy Dugas, Mia Ponsen, Karri Baker and Donny Ingram for helping decorate the tree. I want to also thank DJ Malcom (Gerard), Ruby and Aaron Cleveland for helping me clean the upstairs part of the club. It was nice to spend some time with friends and organizing everything.
I want to also thank the Queens and Kings of Club 717 for being one of my biggest supporters and I am excited to work with them this year to make sure that this year will be successful!
Now for the Shows Coming Up in December we are going to have a lot of fun things going on. We will be having the Toy Tree up again this year and please feel free to bring Toys or Clothing to put on the tree to help out and we will also be doing a Food drive this year too. Please bring any non-perishable food. My goal this year is to make a positive change to the Club, to bring the Family and Home feeling back to Club 717 and I strongly feel that during the Christmas Holidays we can do that. I also want to make everyone really proud.
This December we are going to have 3 fundraisers. The first Fundraiser is going to be on the 3rd of December which is going to be our Christmas Kick-off show which is going to be hosted by myself with special guests, then on Friday December 10th is Savanaugh's Politically Incorrect Christmas Show with Guest Benn Dover, then our second Fundraiser is going to be on the 17th of December which will also be hosted by myself and it will be an open show for Kings and Queens. The 3rd fundraiser is called "Reminisce" a Retro 80's Video Dance Party in support of PFlag Durham.
I am so excited to be apart of this years Christmas and I hope all of you will be able to join us at the club to celebrate!! And please don't forget about the New Year's Eve Party we are going to be having at the Club this year! It will be held on the 31st of December and this years theme is going to be: Gaga Glam!!! So come on out and have a blast!!
Thank you all once again!!
Have a wonderful Christmas and a
Happy New Year!!!
Love you All

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
Hello Club 717,
This time of year brings the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, family diners, reuniting with old friends and everyone's favorite... the Christmas Bonus...
While some may decide to treat themselves to something special, others take a conservative approach and transfer it to an RRSP, why not use this to get you closer to being mortgage free? Many of the mortgage products offer pre-payment privileges such as annual lump sum payments of 15% to 20% of the original mortgage amount without incurring a penalty... The extra benefit of this? It goes purely to the principle balance making an impact on the amount of time it will take to pay it off. Please feel free to contact me to learn more...
Best wishes to you and yours for much love and success in this holiday season! See you next year! Kristin Parker

| | Click for larger | Keep a watch out for our new 'Libido Insurance' ad campaign starting after the Holidays. This ad campaign takes a fun look at condom use as being insurance against HIV and STI's, by taking a twist on some 'real' insurance company ad campaigns. There are many ways to protect yourself and your sexual partners against HIV and STI's, but condoms should still be on hand as your most effective 'insurance'. The AIDS Committee of Durham Region is here to provide you with all the information you need, as well as condoms and safer sex kits that will provide you with the COVERAGE you need. For a sneak preview, you can view the first campaign poster which is posted on the west side of our building (facing the Centre Street Parking Garage) on Prince Street.
If you missed our Christmas Show and Dance on Saturday November 20th you missed a great evening. You'll not want to miss our next show and dance on Saturday February 5th, 2011. This will be our Valentine's Show and Dance. So start planning on attending with your sweetie or meeting your next sweetie now and you'll also be helping a great cause by supporting the AIDS Committee of Durham Region. Reminisce ~ Soon to become Durham's best Retro Video Dance party in support of PFlag Durham !!
Come on out and "Reminisce" with us !!!

While the holiday season is cause for celebration, we at PFLAG Canada Durham recognize that for some this time of year can be very difficult. We understand that some of you are out to your family while others are not. Many may even chose this time to come out to family members. College and university students may have been comfortable in new settings freely expressing their sexual identity. Coming home during the holidays may be stressful trying to hide who they really are. These feelings may initiate their coming out to parents, close friends or family members. Parents who have a child coming out to them may not know how to respond and may need assistance adjusting to the news. We are your support system and we here for you over the holidays.
For those parents, family and friends we urge you to call us if you need help. Those answering your call or email have all been there and can guide you through. You need not be alone. To our LGBT community, please always remember your LGBT family and friends are here for you - we always have a PFLAG mom waiting to give you that hug, love and acceptance. You will always be in our hearts and a part of our family.
We are here for you over the holidays - join us. Through December we will be available by phone and email and will be holding a sharing meeting in Oshawa December 30th from 7 to 9pm at the Oshawa Community Health Centre at 115 Grassmere Avenue. You can reach us at 905-231-0533 or email us atdurhamon@pflagcanada.ca

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
December in the Garden, Because everyone has worked so diligently in their gardens in 2010, December is your month to rest, relax and enjoy THE SEASON. So I have decided to perhaps inspire you with a couple of simple crafts, where hopefully you can get most of the supplies from your gardens. A CHRISTMAS WREATH You need a round or square form on which to attach braches with some florist wire (very thin pliable wire for wrapping or attaching branches). Perhaps you have an old wreath that is ready for the garbage. Salvage it. Cut various braches, pine, cedar, spruce to 8 to 12 inches in length. You need about 40 or 50 pieces depending on the size and fullness that you want. Wire 3 different branches together. In the end you may have 15 to 20 bundles of 3 branches. Add the first bundle to the form with the wire and keep adding the bundles so that they overlap the preceeding one, until the form is completely filled in. If you have any berry braches in your garden, crab apples, cottoneater, rose hips, mountain ash berries, holly you can add these to the wreath for a punch of colour. Also you probably have ribbon and some small colourful tree decorations, which can be added to the wreath. This is your project and you can be as creative and interesting as you want to be. THAT OLD HANGING BASKET OR POT OF DEAD FLOWERS REMOVE OR CUT OFF ANY PLANT MATERIAL, UNLESS THERE IS SOMETHING OF INTEREST TO KEEP THERE. IF IT IS FROZEN, YOU NEED TO THAW IT OUT, DO NOT discard the soil as this is the base in which to insert those branches. Again, collect a variety of evergreen braches, at least a foot in length and insert them into the pot so that they cascade down the side, and place some of various size upright to you achieve a full look of a greenery pot. Then you add some berry branches, or dried hydrangeas from the garden, some ribbons, some cones, etc. These also smell really nice if you want to bring them in for a holiday gathering. But I would return them to the outside, as they can get really messy. TABLE CENTREPIECE If you have a fireplace or have a friend who has a wood burning fireplace, pick a log, birch is really interesting but any log with a flat bottom, or half log will do. Drill three holes for three tapered candles, about three quarters to one inch, depending on the candle. Place a few branches of pine, cedar and spruce around the log with some cones or Christmas decorations and you have your very own personally made centrepiece. That's all I have to say for this year. So I wish you all a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS SEASON AND ALL THE BEST FOR THE NEW YEAR.
Till next time,
Charlie

Something to Say - by Savanaugh
I'm almost embarrassed to admit it. In the larger scheme of life's big issues (especially this time of year), it seems so trivial. If that is the case however, why am I feeling such sadness and actually grieving! The feeling is completely unexplainable. The person behind the charade is still here, it was only a character after all.
A character however that we have all grown to love and had become a part of everyone's lives at the club. So yes, I am actually grieving the loss of a friend.
Even more unexplainable however is the fact that she was such a royal BITCH!!! A hard-nosed, fuck-you exterior. "Shutup" and "Bite ME" flowing out of her mouth at every occasion a mike was in her hand. A cunning and often biting sense of humour that jumped right to the front of the "saying it like it is" line. Cutting through all - like a warm knife through bullshit. Standing her ground and not waivering. When this DIVA was pissed off - we all knew it. We have to admit though... she was usually right! Without a question, a BITCH she could be... yet I am mourning the loss of a friend.
There is a lot for all of us to mourn. We loved every single "shutup" and "bite me". Behind any stubbornness was always the sense of kindness, fair-play, professionalism and fun. Everyone who has ever worked with me knows that my standards can be very high. Yes my friends, it takes high standards to pull a pie out of my twat (or at least to do it with some class and dignity). Her level of professionalism as a performer is second-to-none. Never cancelling a show, present at every single rehearsal, seldom turning down a request to perform, costumes neatly pressed, seldom repeating material, this DIVA has it together both on-stage and in the dressing room. I've always said, want to see the true colours of a performer, watch the show they put on in the dressing room!
It isn't the huge amount of talent, or the professionalism that I am mourning however. It is the friend we have all grown to love in this performer. Almost all of my fondest memories performing at the club have a connection to the old girl! The numerous rehearsals when she had a panic attack when she can't remember the next step or headed the opposite direction. "One, two, three count..... group heads to the right, she crashes into the wall!" Directing "Super Trouper" endlessly until she can manage to use the right hand instead of the left. Having to cut in the middle of a scene because she was distracted by a sparkly object in the distance or forget what we were doing. Sitting on a stage wearing raincoats in a rubber dingy, all SCREECHED out when she quietly leans over and whispers to me "We aren't in Kansas anymore" and then plants herself face first into my lap. And of course, the pinnacle of her career; a mermaid costume and special escorted visit to another Oshawa engagement at the hospital! The stories are endless. Each and every patron at the club feels a connection to this persona and have their own fond memories. I have always had the utmost respect and admiration for her work. Most admirable however is knowing when it is time to pack it in. She is leaving us at the top of her game.
For year upon year of commitment to the club and entertaining us all with class, dignity, professionalism, and fun....

I would like to thank Edna. Miss the old bitchy DIVA already!
There ya have it....

Reel World.... by Kevan Latrace
Like a lot of you out there, I was really looking forward to seeing Burlesque, the new film out this past week starring Cher and Christina Aguleria. I couldn't wait to see whether it was an amazing new movie musical or a gaudy train wreck. Well, having now seen the film I can confirm that the answer is.....YES, it is.
Let me explain - I firmly believe that any actor can be a good to great actor, provided that they have the right support system in place - in the case of a movie, that means a strong director and a decent screenplay. Burlesque has neither of these in its bag of tricks. The truly convenient thing is we only have to blame one person in this case, since the culprit is writer/director Steven Antin. Antin has been in the movie industry for a while, appearing as an actor in Steven Speilberg's 'The Goonies' as well as the teen sex flick 'The Last American Virgin'. He was Jesse in Rick Springfield's music video, 'Jesse's Girl'. Younger audience members will have a better frame of reference with his more recent career of working with the Pussycat Dolls, the stripper/singing group which his brother Robin created.
In any case, Antin wrote and directed this mish-mash, which has got to be one of the most up-and-down experiences I have had at the movies in years. No sooner do you find yourself almost asleep from the inane dialogue and poor acting than BAM - your senses are completely woken up and then blown away by stylistic and catchy musical numbers. Antin has had some background as director of music videos and it shows. Both his lead actresses are never more engaging as when they are on a stage lip-synching to the sound of their own voice. But of course, the dream has to end, reality has to set in and the dialogue has to start all over again.
Had Cher and Christina had the services of a more experienced director (say Rob Marshall or Bill Condon), this might have actually been a good to great film. As it is, Marshall and Condon have left somewhat of a mark on this film, as you will be thinking throughout the film 'Hey, that reminds me of Chicago!' or 'Hey, that looks like what they did in Dreamgirls!'. The supporting cast doesn't fare much better than the leads- the brightest light is Stanley Tucci's throwaway role as Cher's gay best friend. Hunky love interest Cam Gigandet's best scene is where he takes off his clothes, flashes us his buns and then offers a box of cookies in front of his crotch. Peter Gallagher and Julianne Hough are also in the film, but I couldn't really figure out why.
If I had to give this movie a rating out of 10, it would be no higher than a 5 - and that only because of the musical numbers. If you have 2 hours you need to waste and want a good soundtrack while you are doing it, head on in to see this movie. Otherwise, wait until it comes out on DVD.
