Donations Welcomed

I am sure most of our readers are aware of people less fortunate than us in the community.
At Club 717 we have a box for food donations. It all goes to the Aids Committee of Durham Region (ACDR). There is need for such items as: peanut butter, rice, canned goods etc.
Also, please note that there is a box to drop off your plastic bags which ACDR uses at its food bank. If one would rather make a monetary donation, the ACDR would very much appreciate it.
Thank You for considering the ACDR when you do your shopping.
Sincerely,
Steve O'Connor |

 Greetings!
As many of you have already noticed, this month's newsletter was delayed. We had to wait for our new Board to assign their positions. Thank you to everyone that emailed inquiring about what was going on. It's nice to know you actually take time to notice.
Another reason I held back was for the great show on Saturday Nov. 6th. The new Queen of Club 717 was crowned. Congratulations to Ineeda Tips !! There are several shows that you just don't miss, if you know Club 717 at all, Saturday night was one of them. All the contestants brought their "A" game and it was an amazing evening. it was a really long show but it went quick because of the great work done by Entertainment team lead by Donny and the headliners (Candice & Benn). Thank you to all the performers that put themselves out there !!
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Oct. 31st. I wish more of our members would attend these. It's our only opportunity, as members to set the stage for the year to come. We need your input and suggestions to set the agenda and set new team into motion. Without your involvement it's merely a popularity contest which often turns into Drama Fest !! So if your not happy, don't complain, just remember that next year !! I'm pleased to announce new Board of Directors and the positions they will be holding. These people may have not been your choice, if you even bothered to vote at all, but they deserve your respect nonetheless and I thank each and everyone of you for taking on such a daunting task. They get no compensation for the countless hours that go on behind the scenes to make Club 717 the place we enjoy. With that being said, I'd like to introduce you to your new Board of Directors for Club 717: Jason A. - President - President@Club717.caTammy D. - Promotions - Promotions@Club717.ca Gerard K. - Promotions - Gerard@Club717.ca Warren M. - Member at Large - Warren@Club717.ca Kelly H. - Staffing - Staffing@Club717.ca To contact the board as a whole, you can send an email to: Board@Club717.ca and it will send a copy of your email to everyone listed above at once. If you have any comments or suggestions, don't hesitate to send an email to the group or the appropriate person. As we welcome our new Board Members into their new positions, please keep in mind these people contribute TONS of hours and don't receive any financial compensation. They have gotten INVOLVED !! Rather than just complain about things, "Get Involved" yourself. Club 717 is a Social Club, not just a bar !!! and it is here to provide a safe and fun environment for our community. Get involved and help where-ever possible. You have the ability to contribute positively and when you do, we all benefit!! Resist the urge to post negative comments online, as it only hurts yhe community as a whole. Talk to a person face-to-face, not behind their back. Aren't we dealing with enough outside negative influences without adding another log on the fire?
On another note, during the AGM it was brought up that some people didn't get what they felt was the "Proper" thank you's for work they did during some earlier fundraisers at the club. Unfortunately, if no one contributes information, some items will not be included. It's no-one's specific job to send out "Thank You's". This is generally left up to the person organizing and planning the events. If you're running a show, fundraiser or have people you'd like to recognize, send us the information. Thank "YOUR" team and patrons for attending it. As an organizer of an event, show or production, don't forget to thank "YOUR" team. Send the newsletter the info and it might even make it into the weekly eblast. Slip a note to one of the DJ's and they'll announce it to the crowd. This is your newsletter and the content is user driven. Take a few minutes of your time and send in the information. We'll gladly pass it along to our 600+ readers.
A special welcome to David (aka Glenda). David has chosen to become one of our Sponsors for the Club 717 Newsletter. Please see our December issue for a full interview in Steve O'Connor's "Out in Durham Column.
Returning for another 1/2 year Sponsorship renewal is Diane from "My Sisters Voice". Welcome back Diane and Thank you for your support. Please see her advertisements throughout the newsletter.
Lastly, PLEASE remember to visit our sponsors, as their advertisement dollars make this newsletter and interactive website possible !! As a Not-for-Profit organization, we rely on our advertisers to help fund these initiatives and provide the budgets for many of the events. All our advertisers care about our community and are gay friendly. Show them you care as well by calling them first !!
The 2011 Memberships are now on sale !!. Approved at the AGM, you now have the ability to renew for 2 years. A great way to secure your rate in case of a price increase. You can renew now at the club or securely online via our Pay Pal option. Visit our Membership Page on the Club 717 website:
Looking forward to a wonderful Month!! and an exciting year ahead.

President's Message
Hey Folks,
ow, it's been 10+ J years in the making, but here I am, your new President. It's hard to believe I have been here for over a decade now, and this is my first time being President.
I would like to take an opportunity to thank the previous Board Members, for all their hard work last year! Hopefully we can fill those shoes, and make bigger ones for the next board to fill.
I'm impressed and very pleased at my fellow team members who I get to work with over the next year, your new current board. It's a very positive group of people. We're all eager to help make the club flourish and grow.

A Message from King Daddy - Benn Dover
Well this will be my last article as King of Club 717 as I move into my new role as `King Daddy`.
I want to thank everyone for all your support this year. It has been quite an experience that I won't soon forget. When I started out doing drag 3 or so years ago, I never thought I would be in this position. I did it on a dare!!
This past year has taught me so much more than I could have imagined. I became more aware of, and involved with the various organizations within our community, seen things from `the other side` and made many new friends that I may not have had the chance to meet if not for this position. It has been an honour to represent Club 717 at the various charity events we took part in this year and I will continue to do so as long as there is a need!!
I have had an amazing team to work with and without them, this year wouldn't have been the success it was! Queen Candice.... You have taught me more about giving and being a better person than anyone. You have become a big part of my life and I love you!! Thank you for your unconditional support and friendship...it means more to me than you know!!! Our Entertainment Director, Donny...You have been there every step of the way! You stood behind me through thick and thin and never backed down. We spent alot of time together this year and along the way I found an amazing friend. Thank you so much for everything!! I love you mannnnn!!!!
To my fellow Performers...Thank you for being there whenever I needed you! It has been a pleasure working with you. We had alot of fun and laughed alot, and some of us even learned a dance step or two! I look forward to doing many more shows with you!! We have an amazing Staff and Board at the Club. Thank you for the time you put in to make sure we are up and running every week. Without you there would be no Club.
To everyone who shows up every week and supports not only the Performers but the Club as well... a huge thank you! You make it all worth it! And finally, to my biggest fan Amanda.... without you there would be no King Benn. You have been there for me through it all. You have put up with me tearing the house apart getting ready for a show, supported me when I over committed myself and always stood behind me and believed that even though `Benn` can be an ass at times, he really isn`t a bad guy! Thank you Baby for everything!! I love you!!!
I hope I haven`t forgotten anyone. Please forgive me if I have. It is an incredibly busy time of year and we are working hard to put the finishing touches on our last few events of our reign. Congratulations to all the contestants that were part of the King/Queen Competition. It is was a fantastic night!
Thank You to EVERYONE!!!
With Pride, King Daddy - Benn Dover

A message from Queen Ineeda Tips
| | Your New Queen of Club 717 |
Dear Club 717;
Last night was one of the best nights that I could have asked for in my time of performing at the Club.
It was a rush and it felt good, but I can say that the nerves were also kicking in at some points too. I have had a lot of help during the last couple of weeks with things and I would like to take this time in thanking a couple people. Richard Twigg for Costumes, Hiscott for Makeup, Gerard Kalloway for being patient with me while I taught him how to dance, Carlotta Carlisle for helping me and supporting me, and for Lyn Sigurdson for helping me out with outfit desngs and jewelery !
Big Momma (Candice) and Big Daddy (Benn Dover) for being there for me when I needed some advice or someone to talk to, and most of all to my Drag Mother Savanaugh who has been supportive all year and who has taught me the basic guidelines of doing drag.
This upcoming week is going to be busy for me, because Friday November 12th, I have the Honor of doing and Hosting the Past King and Queen's Show at Club 717. Then on November 15th, I will be participating in Big Momma's Tiscot Show in "Toronto Star Search", on November 17th, I will be participating in the Door Prize Show at Zelda's and then on the 19th of November I will be doing the New Queen Show at Club 717.
I have a lot to prove to the club this year and I want you all to know that I am going to do my best to make sure that the communication is kept open between the Kings, Queens, and the Board as well as making sure that I can bring back the feeling of Home and Family to the club too. Club 717 has been my home for the last year and it will always be home for me no matter what.
Thank you all again for coming out last night. I love you all so much and being crowned your Queen means a lot to me. I promise that I won't let you down.
ATTENTION PERFORMERS !! - Please try to attend a special Performers Meeting at Club 717, November 14th at 2pm. We need to have a quick huddle before heading into the crazy fall schedule. Send me an email to let me know if you can make it or not. |

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
Hello Club 717, Want to get more from your mortgage? A great way of doing this is by securing a product that includes an award system such as the CIBC AeroMortgage or President's Choice financials Unbeatable, Eatable Mortgage. Both products not only come with competitive rates and accumulation of points with every mortgage payment made, but you are also granted a lump sum of points/Air Miles at the time of closing along with bonus awards on anniversary dates. Depending on the mortgage amount, you can earn free groceries for a year or even a flight right off the bat!! Would you prefer to give back to the community? MCAP offers a program in combination with the majority of their mortgage products where a pre-determined amount added to your mortgage payment is not only donated to Habitat for Humanity, but MCAP also matches your donation dollar for dollar. If you are interested in getting more from your mortgage and would like further details about these products please feel free to contact me. Have a great November!

************************************************************** PFLAG Canada Durham - We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who came out to The Evening of Hope in Ajax on the anniversary of Shaquille Wisdom's death on October 20th. The community came out in full force and a clear message was sent out to our LGBT youth that they are not alone. The most poignant point of the evening was Shaquille Wisdom's mother Merna's passionate plea to end the bullying and homophobia that took her son's life. The most uplifting speech was from Adamo Ruggiero who truly connected with the youth in the audience and inspired hope. As always Club 717 and the Durham LGBT community was there demonstrating their support for our youth and combined with family, friends and allies we hoped it was the beginning of a renewed strength to move forward together. We move into November with a clear purpose: If we are to protect our children we must take bolder steps to create a safer, more inclusive society for LGBT people. We will be stepping up our commitment to fundraise and expand our educational and support services. Our invites to schools have increased and we have started our sharing meeting expansion. We met in Uxbridge in October and plan a second meeting there in January. On November 17th we will be having our first sharing meeting in Pickering. Our vision is to have our services in all the municipalities of Durham Region and it will happen with the amazing support from the community and volunteers. To Whom It May Concern:
As you may be aware, the organization BullyingCanada has been calling upon both provincial and federal government officials to assist in ensuring that workplaces, schools and communities are able to be safe environments for all. On June 18, 2009 the New Brunswick Government proclaimed "Anti-Bullying Day" to take place on December 17th of each year. As someone who endured physical, verbal and mental abuse at the hands of bullies, for a number of years, I was delighted when Premier Graham stood in the Legislature to and made the following statement: "Bullying simply has no place on our playgrounds, in our schools, in our workplaces, in our communities, or anywhere else in our province." Following the statement by the Premier, MLA David Alward added, "This is what our responsibilities as legislators are all about. We need to work on behalf of all of the citizens of New Brunswick." He went on to say, "I believe that it is very telling that, on the second to last day of the legislative session, we are coming together to move a motion that makes great sense for New Brunswickers and, in the long term, will allow New Brunswickers and our society to increase public awareness of the problem of bullying. I want to encourage all those in New Brunswick to get involved in this issue and to ensure that we see continued reduction of bullying within our schools and communities." We are asking if it would be possible for your company to allow your employees to take a stand on our second annual "Anti-Bullying Day," by suggesting your staff wear blue, the color of the national anti-bullying awareness ribbon, on Dec 17th? Media attention on the issue of bullying has been increasing over the last several years, with regards to "Anti-Bullying Day." We would like to compile a list of companies that will take part in this event. This list will, with the permission of your company, be shared with the media. However, if your company would rather not be publicised please inform us of this decision and we will honour your desires. If you would be interested in learning more about how your staff can take part in wearing Blue on December 17th please contact Rob Frenette by email at: Rob.Frenette@BullyingCanada.ca or by telephone: 877-352-4497 EXT 203. Sincerely,Rob FrenetteFounderBullyingCanada.Ca

Durham LGBTQ Communities Involved Committee (CIC)
Hello Everyone!
At the last meeting in September, those of you who were present were the lucky recipients of a hard-copy one-page document from me. This page is also attached to this eblast. CLICK HERE to view it, for those of you who were not in attendance but may be able to lend your knowledge. The page is meant to serve as a space for collecting the names of any organization, business, association, informal residents' group, professional individual or practice, consultant, etc., that you know of in Durham Region that supports or is friendly towards the LGBTQ community.
The information is being collected as part of a project to develop a telephone information and helpline for the LGBTQ community. We will be talking with each name/place associated on the lists (with no mention of who may have placed the name on the list) in order to confirm their 'friendly space' or 'ally' status. With this final list, we will create a guidebook for helpline volunteers and staff to refer clients to, when they call the helpline. The project is Durham-wide and no name or organization is too small or too big to be included in the resource guidebook. Future support of the LGBTQ community will depend on how thoroughly we can identify supports currently available in the community.
If you have your list and you feel it is about as complete as it can be, please fax it to me at the number below (905-686-4157). You can also choose to type up your list and email it to me, or even just let me know your list is ready and I can come to pick it up. I will be attending the CIC meeting in November as well, so you can bring your hard copy to that meeting for me to collect at that time.
For anyone who has not seen the document, please feel free to print a copy of it from the attached link and add any names/places that you are aware of. You can also just email me those names/places if there are only a few. Ideally, you would pass the list around your networks to get as many entries as possible. Everyone is always busy and working hard, so whatever you can manage is very much appreciated! Thank you to everyone for your help. I will be in contact with you again soon.

Corry's Pet Care Message
Q: I've heard that pumpkin is good for pets to firm up stool. My dog doesn't like pumpkin, is there anything else I can try? A: Probably the best food to give your pets with digestive problems is tripe. Most people think that tripe is a type of fish. It is actually the lining of the stomachs from a variety of ruminating farm animals; i.e. beef, sheep, goats and even venison. Green tripe is high in chlorophyll, contains high concentrations of hydrochloric acid, gastric digestive juices, beneficial bacteria and essential fatty acids; all of which act together to improve appetite and aid in digestion. It can also improve the skin and coat, clean teeth and result in a firmer stool. Do not be surprised if you open a can of tripe and see that it is grey in colour and smells bad. Sometimes it even has bits of green in it because of the undigested plant material. Beef tripe tends to be the smelliest but animals love it and will generally eat it up right away. It is the perfect food for the pet that always seems to have something wrong with them. You can find tripe at your local pet store and it is called Tripett. You may also find it at your local butcher shop; just make sure it is unwashed or green tripe, not the kind for human consumption. If you feed raw, just ask if they carry it. Good luck and let me know how it works with your dog.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you. This column is all about you and your pets. Keep the questions coming to info@takingthelead.ca
Have a pawsitive day!

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
November in the Garden
After Halloween, all the leaves seem to finish falling. So that is the best time to do leaf clean up, if you can wait. When we cut the grass, the leaves on the grass get chopped up or mulched and left there to decompose. Leaves in the garden, are left, and will be hidden by the growing perennials and shrubs next spring. By early summer they have usually disappeared.
If you have not planted your spring bulbs, tulips, daffs.etc., you can still do it before the ground freezes. If you have newly planted trees and shrubs, keep them watered until we get a good frost. If you have tender plants like roses, hydrangeas, tree peonies, you can hill them up with soil to add to their winter protection. I do not usually bother with this. If the plant is not that hardy, then I do not want it. But if you have special plants that are borderline hardy and you want to keep them, this is a good method for extra protection. Just wait until we get a good frost, around late November, before you do this. If you hill the plants too early and it is warm you may encourage growth, which will be too tender to winter.
If you are planning to have a real live tree for Christmas, and want to plant it after Christmas, dig the hole now for the planting and cover the pile of soil, so that it will be loose enough to fill in the hole when you plant it. You need to harden the tree off after Christmas for about one week, in the garage, or some sheltered area near the house. And after planting it, I would cover it with burlap, and make sure that it is well watered.
November is still the time to clean up the garden, if you haven't already done so. Drain your hoses and put them away. Clean, sharpen and oil your garden tools, so they'll be ready for next year. You can still add organic matter to the beds and dig it in, or use as a mulch around perennials and trees. If weeds are still growing, you can still remove them.
Some people like to force bulbs for winter display in the house. You can prepare paperwhites, hyacinths, tulips, daffs and amaryllis to get them blooming for the new year, on your windowsill.
If you have brought in some of your tender garden plants, keep an eye on them for water needs; try to keep the humidity high and provide air circulation if you can with a small fan.
Spider mites, scale, aphids and whiteflies may become a problem either soon, next week, next month or early next year. You just need to keep an eye on your plants and give them the care that they need. And the more light that you can provide through the winter, the better. You should not water unless the plant is dry. And definitely do not fertilize your plants, because in the winter they are going into a rest period.
If you are putting up Christmas lights outside, now is the time to do it. Pick sort of a sunny warm day. Don't wait for one of those frosty December days, and curse to yourself, "why didn't I do this sooner"?
Generally, I find November to be a wet month, with some nice days, but there are some windy frosty days just around the corner too! So try to get your garden chores done on those nice days. You'll enjoy it more.
Till next time, Charlie

Something to Say - by Savanaugh
Okay, I know I know - Savanaugh should run for Queen of the club! I thank each and every one of you who have pushed, pulled, begged and tried to bribe to get me to run for Queen. I have thought about it MANY times believe me, but in the end... I realize the timing is not right for me. It is not that I have anything against the position. I have the upmost of respect for the Queens and King who have held the position. It is fucking hard work!!!!! I have observed closely as each Queen and King give endless hours, energy and money to the position. I am ever so grateful for their work and they have all of my respect. It is a huge commitment to both the club and the community. Candice has brought a touch of class and dignity to the position while promoting us outside of the city. My highest praise and admiration Candice, I consider you a true mentor and role model! Benn has placed the bar so high it may never be achievable for another King. His dedication, raw talent and "hot factor" has brought a whole new element to the club and I respect and thank him for all of his work. Candice and Benn have been the perfect pair and held the perfect reign for the club. Thank you to both of you! I would love more than anything to have both Candice and Benn support and lead me as the Queen of the club, but my apologies to everyone. I simply can't run at this time. Anyone who knows Savanaugh, is aware that 150% is always given. If I can't do the job to my fullest potential, I simply won't do the job. Right now, other things must take top priority for me. I wish the new reigning Queen (and hopefully King) all the best and offer my 100% support. Please know that I will be there to write and direct productions, do any fundraisers asked of me and support you in anyway asked of me. A final congrats to Candice and Benn for an outstanding reign and my sincerest best wishes for whoever finds themselves taking the lead for the upcoming year! There ya have it. Savanaugh had something to say! |

Reel World.... by Kevan Latrace
My birthday was on a Friday this year, which means I got to go see a movie on the first day it opened - doesn't happen very often these days, let me tell you. Having been a very big fan of Seabiscuit a few years a go, I was very much interested in seeing the bio-flick of the next truly great racehorse that came along, Secretariat. Was it a great movie? Well, no. Was it a good movie? I would have to say yes! Keep in mind, it is another one of these 'true stories' that the Walt Disney company has brought to the screen this year, so some facts are turned around a bit to make the story more interesting......but overall, good performances by all the involved parties. Secretariat revolves around the story of Penny Chenery, the Denver stay at home wife and mother who inheirited her father's floundering stable of racehorses in the early 1970's and turned it around by producing Secretariat, the Triple Crown winner of 1973 and still considered one of, if not the greatest racehorse in history. The film casts Diane Lane as Penny Chenery, and John Malkovich as her French Canadian trainer Lucien Laurin. Both actors give credible performances, although Mr. Malkovich's accent kind of drifts in and out of use as the film goes on. Disney does take a few liberties with the story, such as making Penny a middle class housewife at the start of the film, where in fact she was actually a fairly wealthy woman at the time of her father's death, when she took over the stables and produced the racehorse that is the centrepiece of the film. The true star of the film is the racing footage - the camera is everywhere on the horses except for up their behinds! The excitement of the race day experience translates well onto film, and the amazing win of the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths makes for a great climax to the story. Overall, a good movie, good cast, and good direction and cinemetography. I doubt this will be an Oscar contender, but it is still a feel good movie that Disney can be proud of.
