If you're looking to toss back a few this Summer but don't want to worry about the drive home, you might actually have a decent non-alcoholic alternative to try !!

Labatt has launched a brand new brew, but it won't give drinkers a beer buzz on the patio this summer.
For the first time a large Canadian brewery has used a major brand to launch a non-alcohol beer, as Labatt has taken the wraps off Labatt Blue De-alcoholized Pilsener.

Tyson is a lovable goof. He is 14 months old and much loved. His mother is a black lab and his father a boxer.
He has a beautiful physique that combines the short hair of the boxer and the square build of the lab - but his personality is all lab and hence what I think of as the wanna be lap dog. He has had all his shots but is not
neutered.

The family has to part with him due to a sick child. They have to stay within a few minutes of the hospital and this is not a life for a dog to be constantly loaned to friends on short notice.

We want to be sure he goes to a loving home. It has taken the owners a few months to finally acknowledge they have to give him up.

Any help you can provide in connecting us with someone who might like to adopt Tyson would be wonderful.

As we are finalizing the Pride Durham financial year that ended July 31, I just wanted to give everyone a brief update as to how the year has progressed.

- Pride Durham's bank account increased from an estimated $1,700 at August 1, 2009 to an estimated balance of $6,200 at July 31, 2010
- Sponsorship is estimated at $3,850 with an additional estimated $5,000 from proceeds from fundraiser's, day event sales & booth registrations, 50/50 & raffle draws
- Pride Durham ended the year, with an estimated $2,300 profit over the year.  This profit also includes the estimated cost for the annual audit of the financial records.

Threat Post - Tech Tips
iPhones, BlackBerrys, Droids Becoming a Moveable Feast for Attackers

Since at least the time of the iPhone's introduction in 2007, mobile phones have been moving toward their inevitable evolutionary destiny of becoming full-on handheld computers, complete with complex operating systems, the ability to run multiple applications and store large amounts of data. And for just as long, researchers have said that the attackers would begin focusing on mobile platforms as soon as they could figure out a way to make money on it. That time appears to be now.

The appearance last week of the Android SMS Trojan, which fires off multiple text messages to premium rate numbers controlled by the attackers, is the latest and perhaps most prominent example of efforts by online criminal groups to make money from attacks on mobile devices. But the Android Trojan isn't the first such attack and it most definitely won't be the last, experts say.
As things stand now, the relative weakness of the smartphone platforms' security, combined with the app store problem, are making iPhones, BlackBerrys and other mobile devices prime targets for attackers. And experts don't see a lot of hope on the horizon.

October is a very very busy month with some really good shows and the Step-down of Queen Mom Ruby. Then we hit November and King Benn's and Queen Candice's Step-down. They have decided that since they stepped up together they are going to step-down together and they will also be giving Twiggy and guest decade performances to celebrate there 10 years of being a Queen for Club 717.

Club 717's Got Talent has been postponed until the New Year.

Well everyone it has been alot of fun working with the performers and decorating the club but alas like everything it must come to an end. I have enjoyed trying to make sure you have been entertained and deal with the performers with respect and honesty, tho it has been hard at times.....we did it!!!!
To Queen Mom Ruby it has been alot of fun over the last 2 years with you and it will be a happy/sad day for me when you step-down....Happy that you are done and can kick back and relax and enjoy things again...Sad that it means that you are done your term...You were a great Queen Mom.

To Queen Candice it has been a true pleasure working with you this year. Your heart is so big and you give even when you have nothing left to give....to this I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have brought some different ways of thinking to alot of us and this helped to make us all a little better.

To King Benn well.. what can I say buddy. It has been a rollercoaster of a ride for us this year....But no matter what has come our way we stuck together and got through it never once loosing sight of what we wanted to see done. I have watched you grow not only as a performer but as a person too. You have made me laugh when I was ready to scream and you have calmed me and been there for me when I needed a friend......Thank you more than you will ever know!!!!

To my fellow Board Members... well we have not seen eye to eye on some things but that is what has made it interesting and kept us honest....I wish all who are going to run in October all the best but I will not be joining you. I have had one hell of a good time doing what I love to do and that is to make the club look AWESOME!!!!

So it is with a really warm heart that I say to everyone ......"THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES"

A Message from King Benn Dover King of Club 717 - Benn Dover

Well, it's finally that time of year again!!  Time to decide who will be our new  King and Queen of Club 717.  It has been a truly amazing year for me!  Working with Queen Candice has not only been fun, but a learning experience as well and I have made a new and amazing life long friend.   I love you My Queen!!!  There is so much more to being King than just the Drag Shows.  There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes that no one gets to really see.  Shows to plan, fundraisers to organize, decorating to do, problems to be solved but along the way I have made some new friendships and got to know a lot of fantastic people!!

The role of King or Queen is not just about wearing the crown.  You are representing the Club and it's Members.  It's important to remember that what you do in your new role reflects on everyone.  Take Pride in your position and our Club,  Your year as King or Queen is what YOU make it.  Have fun!  Don't be afraid to try new things!  Plan ahead for your shows.... life is so much easier when you know what you are doing and who is doing what.  Keep an open mind and have a good relationship with the other Performers, after all, without them you will have a tough time putting together shows.  The Board is on your side so don't be afraid to approach them.  They really are not all that scary and if you have any concerns, that is always a good place to start.  As King or Queen you can sit in on Board meetings  and have your concerns addressed or address them yourself.  Always keep an open mind but don't be afraid to state your opinion.  Like I said, your year is what YOU make it.

I want to wish all the contestants good luck.  It has been an incredible year for me and I'm sure you will find it to be a great experience to.  In my new role as "King Daddy" I will be around to help out and support you in any way I can.  I know how important it is to have the support of others.  Thanks Queen Mum Ruby!!  You have been a great friend and made this year a lot of fun!  You will also have the support of the Entertainment Director.... he or she will be your link to the Board and can be a huge help. Thanks Donny!!  You made things work when I didn't think we could pull it off!

Finally.. the most important part of your new role.....HAVE FUN!!!  Don't take yourself too seriously.  Work well with others and you will earn the respect of everyone.  Have a great year and know that you will have Queen Mum Candice and myself to help out where we can!  Good luck everyone and I will see you on the night of the Competition!!!

With Pride,

King Benn Dover

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
 Kristin Parker - Mortgage Specialist
Hello Club 717,

When approving a credit application, whether it's a mortgage, line of credit or credit card one of the major deciding factors for Financial Institutions is your credit history.  We've all heard about the importance of the credit score... but how do credit companies such as Equifax and Transunion come up with these numbers?  Some of the components making up this rating are; collections, judgments, outstanding balances in respect to credit limits, repayment history and how often you seek credit products. Even though each of these carry a different weight they are all very important.  One thing I highly recommend to clients whether they are unsure of their credit history may be hesitant about moving forward with an application or just to check up on their financial health is to visit the websites of Equifax (www.econsumer.equifax.ca) and Transunion (transunion.ca) to obtain their report for review.

A few tips about how to maintain a great score; try to keep the balance of your credit products to 60% of the approved limit, if possible keep to 3 active trade lines and most importantly, on or before the due date pay at least the minimum payment required.

If you or anybody you know would like to learn more about credit scores and/or tips on how to improve their credit report please speak to either your trusted financial advisor, mortgage agent or of course... please contact myself for a no cost, no obligation consultation.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!!!

Reel World - by Kevan Latrace
 Kevan Latrace - Newsletter Columnist
Hello Club 717,

This summer, I managed to get my husband to do something he hasn't done in years - no, I am not talking about some kinky sexual position or dedicating a drag number to my mother.  We actually went and saw a movie starring Julia Roberts and well.....he LIKED it!

I should preface this by letting you know that my husband thinks Julia Roberts is THE most annoying actress on the face of the planet.  The hair.  The teeth.  The laugh.  Thinks it is all as phony as can be and tells me there are only so many times I can bring up Erin Brockovich as proof of her acting abilities - he has always called her Oscar winning role as a mere drop in the vast swimming pool of her mediocre acting abilities.

So this summer we went to see Eat Pray Love.  Julia stars in this real-life drama as Elizabeth Gilbert, a travel writer who seemingly has everything she is supposed to want - handsome husband, great career, fantastic home.  So why is she so miserable?  Feeling she has lost the essence of herself in her career, her marriage, her life around her, she does the unthinkable - she divorces her husband, gives up everything she has worked for , and takes a year to rediscover herself.  During this time, she decides that she will (in order) - EAT in Italy - PRAY at an ashram in India - and learn to LOVE herself again in Indonesia (hence the title!)

The film is certainly a lovely postcard for each of the character's destinations, but it is far more than that.  It successfully allows the viewer to take the journey with Gilbert; as she re-discovers things about herself, you will find yourself questioning the same characteristics about yourself.  Things like "Where is my inner serenity?", "Why can't I love myself more?" and "Is buying new jeans in a larger size worth having this entire pizza for?".

Roberts is able to completely lose herself in the role - you forget that you are looking at an actress, and fully become engrossed with the character.  That being said, the finest performance in the movie comes from Richard Jenkins, as a world weary American who inhabits the ashram in India at the same time as Gilbert.  Strong contention for an Oscar nomination for this outstanding actor.

Great movie and great life lessons to be learned - go see it!

Durham LGBTQ
Communities Involved Committee

Hello everyone - our committee has had an awesome summer and are excited to be making strides in the Durham Region towards equality of life here.

We have a Diversity Debate Organizing Committee who have pulled in all avenues of Durham Diversity to create a debate in each area of Durham helping citizen and community members see the true colours of who is running for council.  We believe to inspire change we need to be out there visable and vote on Oct 25 !

Other great news - in our partnerships with the Durham Distress Centre, we are thrilled to announce that funding has been received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in support of a 3 year project to provide a culturally sensitive crisis prevention and response service for individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning (LGBTQ) in Durham Region.

This project will see the development of:

An LGBTQ specific helpline

A guide to local resources that either meet the specific needs of the lo-
cal LGBTQ community, or that are determined to be LGBTQ friendly,
thus supporting improved inclusion

The creation of safe spaces for dialogue on the issues and concerns
facing the local LGBTQ community in Durham and engagement of the
local voluntary sector in discourse designed to improve their ability to
meet and address the unique needs and concerns of the local LGBTQ
community

We look forward to working with our partners toward the successful implementation of this project, and thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support!

Our next meeting is Sept 15th

My name is Jennifer Draper and I work for the Pickering Public Library as a Librarian. I am doing an online survey to find out how the LGBTQ community feels about their public library. The results are going to be presented at the Ontario Library Association Conference in 2011.  I want to know how the public library can better serve the LGBTQ community (my community!), and even market it's services to you. In some cases small/medium town libraries don't think they have anyone from our community living there. Most of the people I know came from small towns, so I am aiming to set the record..er...straight.  I am also looking for people to interview on camera about their library experiences. So if you are interested in talking about your library experiences, good or bad, please contact me at: jenniferd@picnet.org .

Durham Diversity Debate Committee launches website &
invites media to join the conversation
OSHAWA, ON. - An eclectic mix of community organizations, stakeholders and leaders have gathered to organize a first for Durham Region- a series of municipal debates solely dedicated to exploring issues relating to diversity.
The Diversity Debate Organizing Committee (DDOC) was formed with the goal of equipping residents with an accurate picture of the beliefs and values municipal candidates hold on topics surrounding diversity. Currently, in many different aspects diversity is growing and projected to continue to grow in the Durham Region, which presents new and different issues to be addressed by local politicians. Specific questions to be asked at these meetings will address issues relating to ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, gender, abilities, religion, and more. By providing an opportunity for candidates to have their voices heard on these important topics, voters should feel empowered to make informed choices by the October 25 election.

Our vision of initiating public forums relating to these controversial and too-often ignored issues stems from the belief that true political leadership involves championing diversity and recognizing its value and potential while addressing challenges head-on. The goal of the DDOC is to give those who hope to lead  the opportunity to articulate their vision on issues relating to diversity in the region, as well as answering questions directly from their community. This cannot be done without the meaningful participation of community members, candidates and the media. Plans for debates are underway for the municipalities of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington. For more information regarding the DDOC, details of our events, and more please visit our newly launched website at www.durhamdiversitydebate.com.

Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life 2010 - We Need YOU!

The AIDS Committee of Durham Region will be participating in the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Oshawa on Saturday September 25, 2010.    This year's walk will begin with registration at 9:30am in front of Oshawa City Hall and end at Lakeview Park.   There will be five stopping stations on this year's walk.  The stations will be operated by local businesses and organizations.   Each station will be holding a special awareness event, which looks like these events will be a ton of fun for all who participate. A BBQ, entertainment and raffle will also be a part of this year's walk.  How can you get involved?   You can join the LGBTQ Community team, help raise funds and walk with us!

Don't wish to join our team, but want to walk or form your own team, then just go to: https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/LoginRegister.aspx?EventID=56876&LangPref=en-CA and on the left side of the page click on "Sign Up to Walk" and then follow the instructions.  We are hoping that large numbers of folks from the Durham LGBTQ community will participate in this important and fun fund raiser.

We realize that not everyone can walk, but you can still participate by making a donation.  If you wish to donate just go to: http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?EventID=56876&LangPref=en-CA&RegistrationID=922019 and sponsor me.   All the funds raised stay in Durham to provide HIV/AIDS related services.   The AIDS Committee gets its core funding from the AIDS Bureau, ACAP and Trillium Foundation.  This core funding can only be used for the agencies day to day operation (such as; rent, salaries and utilities).  In order for us to provide services to the community we have to raise funds from the community.   This is why fund raising events like the AIDS Walk, Taste For Life and our monthly Dances are so very important.  When you donate to the AIDS Committee, you are giving back to our own community.

Just prior to the start of this year's Walk we will be having a media event along with Distress Centre Durham to announce some new core funding both of our agencies have received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).  This funding will support our new Volunteer Coordinator position for the next three years.  Our agency has been without a Volunteer Coordinator for two years and we have had a serious need for this position so we can be more effective in the community.

OTF has also funded Distress Centre Durham to operate a Gay Call line, local gay resources guide and promote 'LGBTQ safe spaces' in Durham Region for the next three years.  These will be new services that are needed in our region and will be a model for other communities across the province.
So in conclusion, I hope you will mark your calendar and come out on Saturday September 25th to Oshawa City Hall to celebrate, raise much needed funds and have fun with friends both old and new.

Separation
 Anxiety 101

Q: My partner and I have recently gotten a puppy. We've noticed that when we leave that the puppy gets quite anxious when she's put in her crate. Is there anything we can do to make things easier?

A: Absolutely. There are a number of ideas that you can try out. The first one is to limit how you leave and return home. If you make a big deal out of coming and going, the puppy will pick up on the energy and become more excitable or anxious. Do your best to make it as boring as possible.
Secondly, if you always read the paper or check emails before putting the puppy in the crate, change your routine. By switching things up, you keep your puppy on its toes.

Other ideas to consider:
You can place an old sweater or t-shirt with your scent into the crate. Try putting lavender oil or Roman chamomile in a diffuser or add Rescue Remedy to the water. Buy a plug-in from your vet or pet store that contains the same pheromones as a mother nursing. Make sure that the puppy is getting plenty of play time or exercise, as that has calming effect. Get a heated pillow toy and place in the crate with her. Look at leaving the TV or radio on.

I'm sure by implementing some of these options, your puppy will be less anxious and so will you.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you. This column is all about you and your pets. Keep the questions coming to info@takingthelead.ca

Have a pawsitive day!

Got Plant Issues? - by CharlieGot Plant Issues - Email: newsletter@club717.ca and Charlie will get back to you !!

SEPTEMBER  IN  THE  GARDEN

1.  Keep the garden neat and tidy.  With fall weather of cool damp nights and hot days still to come, plants are slowly starting to dwindle.  Prune as needed, deadhead  and pick off any dying leaves or branches.

2.  There is still time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials as they still have about 6 to 8 weeks to make root and become established.

3.  Control lawn weeds.

4.  Now is a great time to overseed your lawn or start a new lawn.

5.  Start bringing in tender plants, but check for bugs.  Perhaps a couple of sprays with soapy water will help.

6.  You can still sow vegetables -  lettuce, spinach, chard

7.  After the first frost, you can dig up tender bulbs -dahlias, cannas, gladiolas, etc. and store in a cool dark area

8.   S T O P -  fertilizing trees and shrubs to allow this year's
growth to harden off before winter arrives

9.  If your garden could use a punch of colour right now, you can plant winter pansies, flowering kale and cabbage, mums, asters and some late flowering perennials if you can still get them.

10. This is certainly the time to start planting those spring bulbs.

All spring bulbs need good drainage.  If you plant them in a swampy
soil they will soon fail.   Gardens that are shady now because of
large deciduous trees will probably be sunny enough in the spring to allow daffodils to flourish.

Tulips prefer more sun.  Tulips also are classified by their flowering
time- early spring- mid season - and late spring to early summer.

Wherever you purchase bulbs there will be information available as to colour, bloom time, height and what are good companions for them.
There are some that will take shade while others prefer more sun.  You just have to read all the infomation they provide.

Crocus and snowdrops are short and first to flower, so should be planted where they can be easily seen. Near walks and driveways.
Daffodils and tulips  with their greater flower size and height can be planted further back in the garden.

If you plant hyacinths and other fragrant bulbs, they would be great by walks, doorways, windows, so you can appreciate their scent.

Planting depth can vary.  Generally small bulbs are planted about 3 inches deep while larger ones 6 to 8 inches deep.  Small bulbs can be planted a couple of inches apart, while larger bulbs 4 to 8 inches apart. It depends on how full you want the garden to be.  One rule is to plant bulbs 3 times the depth of their size.

S I Z E  does matter.  Larger more expensive bulbs will bloom in the first year.  Cheaper smaller grades may take a couple of years to bloom.

And if you have a S Q U I R R E L   problem one way to handle it, is
to plant the bulbs in trenches .  Dig the  trench to the size and depth required, cover with chicken wire and blood meal and finally
soil.   If you find this too much to do, just try the bloodmeal.  Also
daffodils are more squirrel resistant than other bulbs.

Unless you have a lot of money, I would only purchase one or two types of bulbs - eg. yellow daffodils and red tulips.  That way I would be putting more of these two colours in the garden.  After next spring when you see your beautiful garden, you can then decide to add more of the same, or branch out into other colours or earlier or later bulbs.
Something that will compliment what you already have.

Bulb  Timing

MARCH -  snowdrops and crocus

APRIL - crocus, daffodils, hyacinths, species tulips

MAY  -  Daffodils, mid season tulips, lilacs and forsythia

JUNE - late tulips, allium, iris  and roses

It is also very important to let the foliage of the bulbs die down after blooming.  This foliage is making food for next years flowers.
So planting your bulbs near shrubs or perennials that will cover this dying foliage is a good idea.  Also once that foliage has yellowed, it is okay to remove it.

I hope I haven't overloaded you with too much info.  But to me, you can never have too much.  Enjoy your fall garden as winter is just around the corner.

Till next time  IN THE GARDEN,

Charlie

Something to Say - by SavanaughSavanaugh

I almost did it.... seriously!  No, not drink off the floor again... or cause a mash potatoe scene.  I almost packed it in from performing.  Last year was INSANELY  busy (self-imposed I know) - but insanely busy none-the-less.  When I totaled up the number of shows I performed at Club 717 and other venues including charity work... Savanaugh did over 35 shows last year and brought in over $4500.00 in charity donations.     I have to admit - I had a blast doing it as well!!!!

After my last show however, I was exhausted and looking to make changes, new directions in my life.  My intentions were real... I was going to take two years off from performing and focus on other creative outlets.  Everyone around me told me I couldn't do it and they were right.  The mess of Savanaugh was left in the drag room at the house... on the floor for two months.  Every time I headed downstairs to pack the old girl away.... I couldn't do it.  I couldn't believe how attached I have become to the old slutty broad.  Sign me up for therapy... cause it felt like the death of a part of me.

An important part of me at that.  This alter ego provides me the creative outlet that I have always needed.  Develop and create a character and persona.  Savanaugh says and does exactly what all of us wish we could do on a daily basis.  Want to touch a boob... she can do it!    Want to cuss up a storm.... She's a pro!  Want to strip down the hottest guys on stage during a show... well who wouldn't?  Most importantly, want to address a societal issue, call a spade a spade... Savanaugh provides that outlet in a non-confrontational manner.  Who can really get mad or take great offensive to this ridiculous caricature.  No longer man.... definitely not woman.   Savanaugh (like all drag queens) is a caricature of all of us.

A few close friends also pointed out how selfish my decision was.  I thank all of you who came forward and screamed NOOOOOO!!!!  It really touched my heart how many people expressed that they would miss Savanaugh on stage and begged me not to take the leave.  Even my own children didn't want me to give her up entirely.  My son has seen me perform but my daughter has only seen me dressed.  As she put it.... I can't retire for at least 5 more years when she is of age to enter a bar and see a show!
So now what to do?   I can't possibly commit to another 35 shows or face the pressures of bringing in that much dough in the coming year.  I don't do this for a living and hold those who do in the highest regard!  I already hold a 50 hour a week job, am on at least 10 work committees and another 5 community committees.  I also can't give up the old broad yet.  My solution is to agree to do one show every two months.  I know, I can hear all of you already - ya right!!!!

I need your help in this.... Savanaugh has a difficult time saying NO  (shutup)!  When a great charity comes along and only needs me to do a couple of numbers... "No" is usually not in my vocabulary.  How do I need your help?   Please understand that if I don't agree to do a show... it is nothing personal.  I WANT to do every show asked of me.  If I've said no, it is because I'm over-extended.

So, bring on those requests... before my year is all booked up!!!!!

There you have it,
Savanaugh
