Five surgeons from big cities are discussing who makes the best patients to operate on. The first surgeon, from New York , says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.."
The second, from Chicago, responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded."
The third surgeon, from Dallas, says, "No, I really think librarians are the best, everything inside them is in alphabetical order"
The fourth surgeon, from Los Angeles chimes in: "You know, I like construction workers... Those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over." But the fifth surgeon, from Washington DC, shut them all up when he observed: "You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on.... There's no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains, and no spine. Plus, the head and the ass are interchangeable.

We are also working hard on the encore performance of "Any Once Upon a Time" for June 18th..... an origional production by our very own Garrett/Savanaugh. We originally did this one last January and it was a huge success. A great show with a powerful message and one of my favourite productions. A message from Queen Candice
Hi there everyone!
I can't believe it is that time of the month again.
We made it out for Chardonnay's birthday show where she performed as Reba McEntire and she looked INCREDIBLE! Later on I really enjoyed performing with Ben Dover, Your King 717 and a special guest with Toronto entertainer Nicolette Brown.
I just got back from Buffalo NY Coronation Ball, a very big charity event and I'm taking off again to Lexington Kentucky to help out with their Coronation Ball - another BIG Charity event.
I'm hugely excited about the PRIDE fundraiser coming up on June 11th and even more excited to be representing the Bar with my hubby Ben Dover at Durham Pride on June 12th as well as at the show at Club 717 later that night.
Get ready for Toronto Pride at the end of June; I hope to see you all there. If you would like to volunteer, we'd love to have you.
All my love Your Queen of Club 717 Candice

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
Hello Club 717,
May was another busy month with the major banks adjusting rates in reaction to economic activity... Unlike April, we saw lenders either maintain or reduce their fixed rates to the mid 4% range. In the case of the over night lending rate (prime) there was much speculation as to how the Bank of Canada would proceed. Steady domestic economic growth was demonstrated in a recent Stats Can report supporting the decision for prime to be bumped up a notch. However, the recent troubling data out of the US along with the fear of the increasing debt crisis in Greece spreading into Portugal and Spain warranted the reexamination of whether any movement may be to hasty. The end result, the Bank of Canada raised their rate, the first increase since April 2009, by a very modest ¼ of a percent making Canada the first of the G8 countries to do so. What does all this mean for those with variable rate mortgages? While the banks will follow suit and increase their prime rate to 2.50%, most people will not see a fluctuation in payment and will most likely enjoy these current historic lows for a little awhile longer as the world economy continues to recover. For more information please feel free to contact your trusted mortgage professional or myself...
Have a great summer!!

Community Events

The AIDS Committee of Durham Region is planning a one day conference to identify and address some of the needs and issues of LGBTQ seniors in Durham Region and to mobilize a community response to the service gaps and barriers for this population. The conference will take place on Friday, October 29th, 2010 at Carruther's Creek Golf and Country Club in Ajax.
We will be hosting our first Planning Committee Meeting for the conference on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 at 10AM at our offices and would like to invite you to join us. If you cannot attend the June 3rd meeting more planning meetings will be held through the summer. Feel free to share this invitation with anyone from your networks who you think may be interested in participating. The 'Senior Queer Citizens Conference' will bring awareness to issues surrounding aging and the LGBTQ community. LGBTQ seniors face many unique and complex issues in addition to the challenges faced by aging heterosexual seniors. Many LGBTQ seniors who 'came out' after Stonewall are being forced back into the closet in order access basic services needed for survival, facing stigma and discrimination from peers as well as from care providers. These harsh realities contribute to high rates of isolation, depression and suicide. Please contact Mark Hammann, M2M Outreach Worker (905-576-1445, ext 15 or M2M@aidsdurham.com) or Tiff Idems, Support Services Coordinator (contact info below) if you are interested in joining the planning committee or would like more information on this exciting and timely initiative. AIDS Committee of Durham Region Message
Reflections on Pride
It's that time of the year again when we celebrate our pride. Some people ask why we have Pride events and if they are important. Well, I am one who believes that Pride is important. LGBTQ individuals and communities have faced much pain and suffering for centuries from a lack of acceptance and compassionate understanding. The LGBTQ community from fear has hidden away from the larger community which has only helped in this lack of inclusion. Having and showing our pride despite the odds we have faced and often continue to face, we can enlighten and create healthier lives, not only for ourselves but for the larger community, of which we are a part of. Below I have listed some of the Pride events that are taking place or have taken place. I hope it will encourage you to attend and be a part of these events. I also hope this article will help you to see how Pride is important for everyone. Pride Durham will be holding its annual event on Saturday June 12th at Heyden Shore Park in Whitby. An afternoon of family fun, food and games is planned as well as many community groups and agencies with booths (including the AIDS Committee) to show support and the services available to the LGBTQ community. An evening Pride dance will cap off the day's festivities at Club 717 as well. The 2010 Durham Pride is looking to be a better event and all that is needed now to make it one of the best in years, is YOU. The next big event in June is Toronto Pride. Toronto Pride is one of the biggest Pride events in North America and if you've never been... well, why not? The AIDS Committee along with our volunteers and supporters will march in the Toronto Pride Parade on July 4th this year. Anyone in Durham is welcome to come and join us in the march; you'll get a great T-shirt to wear! If you're interested in marching with ACDR all you need to do is let us know as soon as possible, by contacting myself, Chris or Brianne here at the AIDS Committee.
Leading up to these annual June Pride events were a couple of other related pride events that occurred in the Durham Region. On Friday May 7th the AIDS Committee, along with Eastview Boys and Girls Club, PFLAG Canada Durham, The Youth Centre, Club 717, Oshawa Community Health Centre, Pinewood Centre, Town of Ajax, Durham Family Court Clinic, District 13 Durham OSSTF and Durham Regional Police Services sponsored Durham's second Pride Prom. This prom for Durham's LGBTQ youth was held at Oshawa Golf and Curling Club and attended by 81 youth. This very up-scale and formal event was hosted by Mark Childs, Vice President of Marketing at Campbell's Soup Canada and co-founder/chair of OPEN (Our Pride Employee Network - supporting the companies LGBTQ employees). Watching these fine LGBTQ youth having the rare opportunity to be themselves, relaxed and celebrating a special moment in their lives was very moving for those of us who attended. Durham should be proud that it is one of just a very few places where organizations have come together to show our LGBTQ youth that they are important and deserving of something special. I wonder how different the lives of these LGBTQ youth will be in the future because they had a positive and uplifting experience from this prom. I can't help but wonder how different the lives of us older LGBTQ would be now if we had had such an event when we were younger. It was an empowering evening of pride. International Day Against Homophobia took place on Monday May 17th. The municipalities of Clarington (Bowmanville), Oshawa and Pickering raised the rainbow flag to show their recognition of this day. Clarington and Pickering flew the flag for the entire week and Oshawa's Mayor, John Gray spoke making a proclamation that May 17th is Anti-Homophobia Day in Oshawa. Oshawa also raised the pride flag for the day at City Hall. It is good to see more municipalities in the region standing up against homophobia and proclaiming their intent to promote diversity and inclusion for a better and stronger Durham Region for its entire citizen's and the future growth of the region thanks to pride. Because the reality is, diverse and inclusive communities attract more business which means MORE JOBS and OPPORTUNITIES for ALL! Let's work towards seeing more of Durham's communities head toward full inclusion for its changing and growing diversity. Another major part of Pride is in fighting homophobia. In regions, towns, cities and nations where homophobia persist there are concrete stats that show HIV infection rates remain high or continue to increase, while communities that stand up against homophobia are seeing HIV infections remaining low or decreasing.
Pride IS important not only for our nation and local communities, but for even our own individual health - Gay or Straight. I invite you to show your Pride whenever and wherever you can. Mark Hammann Gay men's Outreach Worker The Aids Committe of Durham Region 22 King Street West, Suite # 202 Oshawa, Ontario L1H 1A3 905-576-1445 ext. 15 |

Pride Durham Inc. is a non-profit organization that hosts events in Durham Region celebrating Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgendered (GLBTQ) and associated peoples throughout our community. Pride Durham Inc. relies on the leadership and energy of its volunteers and the support of its sponsors to make these events happen each year and to foster ongoing community education and spirit through a public presence, outreach educational programs, social events, and community partnerships. This year's theme chosen by the Pride Durham Committee is "Alive with Pride". It is the perfect theme as we the GLBTQ Community needs to show to the Durham Region that we are alive and are proud of whom we are and that we deserve the same respect as everyone else! As the newly elected President of Pride Durham Inc., I am honored and grateful to be working with an amazing team on the Pride Durham Committee. The question that has come up to me is what is happening on June 12th at Heydenshore for the day event and at Club 717 for the night event? Well get ready cause my answers are going to excite you and make you want to come to celebrate with us. The day event at Heydenshore starts at noon and ends at 5pm. After the show is over we want to celebrate and that is where Club 717 DJ comes into action with the hottest tracks and the dance floor will be pack & celebrating Pride Durham 2010. Before we built our present pond that is 10.5 feet by 10.5 feet, we had a pond that was a kid's swimming pool, about 6 feet in diameter and 20 inches deep. I was painting black tar on the driveway to seal it, and painted the kid's pool black also. Sky blue with funny little ducks painted on, did not quite appeal to me. I had already dug out the hole to place that round pond, had it levelled. and when I finished the driveway. I went around back and painted the pool right where it was. It dried overnight and I filled it with water the next day. By the book they say to let it sit for a couple of weeks, so that the water can age and dissipate any chlorine or chemicals. I bought a small pump that came with a fountain attachment, 2 water lilies (miniature ones) as the pool was tiny, some elodea and parrot feather, which would oxygenate the water, 3 trapdor snails, 3 water hyacinths and 3 water lettuce. When I got home I set all this up in the pond and the next day went to purchase 5 goldfish, which I added when I got home after a half hour of climatizing them to the water temperature by floating the bag of fish in the water for that half hour before release. I had read all the basic information but I was eager to get this pond going. I was doing things pretty much according to the book. I do not like to get to technical and I definitely do not like to use a lot of chemicals. Well, in the first two weeks of having the pond, the water turned a lime green which was the result of algae growing. So after more research and talking to the pond people at the garden centre, I bought a small bale of barley hay which came in a mesh bag and added this to my pond. They also told me in time when everything in the pond started to grow and work together that the water would clear, but the barley hay would hasten the process. Basically at least half of the pond surface needs to be shaded by water lily leaves or other water plants. And this reduces the algae growth to a more reasonable rate which one can live with. Then as I found out you can have too many water plants. Once the water lettuce and water hyacinths started to get growing, I was starting to compost them as there was no more water surface, and I couldn't see the fish. That winter, I brought the fish inside in an aquarium, composted the water lettuce and water hyacinth and left the water lilies and elodea in the pond where thery wintered. The next spring I noticed that the water lilies had doubled, so I took them out of the pond, divided them and repotted into four pots using regular garden soil. On the recommendation of a friend, fertilized my lilies with fertilizer stakes that are used for trees. You have to hammer these fertilizer stakes into the ground. I broke them in half and placed one piece in each pot about half way down. And then we sold that house and moved to Oshawa, where we now have a 10.5 by 10.5 foot pond. We moved in the fall, so the fish wintered in the aqaurium. The water lilies were buried in the garden, and some of the elodea was also wintered in the aquarium, plus some snails. Our new home in Oshawa, had wall to wall carpeting which we ripped out and decided to use for a underlay for the pond we would dig. So we dug this huge 10.5 by 10.5 hole 2 feet deep, and then in the middle a four square foot hole four feet deep. So the pond has a four foot square depth in the very middle surrounded by a three foot shelf that is 2 feet deep. It is on this two foot shelf where all the water lilies sit and grow. We have tried several kinds of water plants over the years and now have settled for water liles because of the flowers and elodea because it oxygenates the water and provided food for the fish that we do not feed. Those four water liles that I brought to Oshawa became eight water lilies that year, plus I purchased a few more to get that shade on top of the water. For the first two years in the Shwa, Larry called our pond the swamp because it was very green for at least two to three weeks each June. I did the barley hay again for a couple of years to get rid of the algae. We have a waterfall, made from three eavetrough splash pads that gently take the water away from the house. And we have a rock with a hole in it that water gushes out of. This aerates the water, provides sound of running water and it looks nice. So all the old carpet and underlay is under the rubber pond liner, to protect from sharp rocks and sharp roots that may be protruding and may puncture the lining. We have not cleaned the pond in over 11 years. But we skim the pond weekly to get rid of floating debris. We have over 20 water lilies, tons of elodea and many snails. For the first few years I used a pond heater to prevent freezing in the winter. They always gave up after a couple of years and I had to replace the fish. Now I just let the pond winter naturally, buy new feeder goldfish each spring and that is that. Algae grows on the waterfall and on the rock with the bubbling water which we scrub weekly to remove the algae. We do not feed our fish, as we want them to eat mosquito larvae and other insects and we want them to eat the algae and other plants. There is a balance in the pond with plants, fish, snails and water quality. If I turned the water pump off and had no running in the pond, it would be fine because of this ecological balance. But if some problem developed I would turn the pump back on. We also do not feed our fish, because when they respond to you going to the pond and feeding them, they also respond to racoons and other critters who visit at night, thinking that they will be fed. So it's something to consider. We get a lot of pleasure from the pond. It attracts many birds who come to drink and or bathe. We've even had a blue heron, who I think ate some fish, but it was a sight to see. Even dragon flies, butterflies, moths and other insects stop by for a drink We are always looking to see how much the fish have grown and even if they've had babies, which they usually do. So no matter what happens with your pond you will learn to deal with it and learn as you go. Now that we are having record breaking weather temps, you must keep those new plantings and even the old ones well watered, if you want them to survive. From In the Garden by the Pond,

Something to Say... - by Savanaugh
Can we say dysfunctional?
Ya, that's right, Savanaugh has said it! When we look closely amongst our community, it becomes quite apparent that we more than our share of dysfunction amongst us. Not something we like to talk about, but seriously folks. Take a good look around. Our community keeps the pharmacy's and doctors of Durham in full business. We can start with the mass amounts of prescription drugs being taken on a daily basis. Have a small ache and pain, simply ask and the pills come flying from every direction. I'm not talking some Tylenol either. Let's face it; our community is very well medicated!
That is only the prescription meds. Then we move on to all of the other forms of medicating we do on a regular basis. Everything from high alcohol consumption, regular pot use to the oxy's and E. Once again, we are walking, self-medicated zombies!
I don't mean to single out our community alone. Let's face it; housewives all over suburbia are poppin the pills to simply get through their mundane existence. A critical look however will quickly reveal that our community is medicated at a much higher rate than the average local housewife. Whatever type of escape we are into, whether it is prescription drugs to alcohol consumption, the reality is that it is one hundred percent self-medication!
We look amongst ourselves and can quickly realize the huge amount of mental illness our community is suffering and at an alarming rate. Don't forget that mental illness includes everything from clinical depression and eating disorders to forms of bipolar and schizophrenia. How many amongst us, are finding themselves self-medicating on a regular basis? How many of us (whether we want to admit it or not), are suffering from mental illness. How many of us are filling our anxieties and voids with substances?
It shouldn't be a surprise to us that our community suffers from addictions and mental illnesses at a disproportionate rate compared to the rest of mainstream society. While things continue to improve within our community, the reality is that we often find ourselves socially marginalized. As long as we continue to feel marginalized, we will continue to self-medicate and escape through any means available to us.
At some point, we need to break this vicious cycle of dependency. Our social alienation has lead to chemical dependency and the chemical dependency can in turn lead to social alienation. It is time we support each other in a productive means. We need to stop counseling each other without qualification, we need to stop providing escape to each other through alcohol and drug availability. We need to support our community by making professionals available and breaking the stigmas attached to needing support.
F*%k, I'm all stressed now.... anybody got an oxy?

Reel World... - by Kevan Latrace
REEL WORLD - JUNE 2010 One of the drawbacks of being a volunteer movie columnist is that some months, depending upon my schedule, I don't actually get to see any new movies at the theatre. Such is the case this month - seen lots of drag shows, lots of news, lots of American Idol and the start of a lot of So You Think You Can Dance, but not a whole lot of new films in the theatre. However, I did get a chance to have a few Family Movie Nights at home, so I will happily review a few of the films we recently watched together as a family. Sherlock Holmes - starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams. Personally, I have always had a soft spot for Mr. Downey Jr. Don't know exactly what it is, but I think he is a brilliant actor who obviously battles with his personal demons on a daily basis. In any case, I quite enjoyed this action-adventure romp from Madonna's ex, Guy Ritchie. Some may argue that such qualities as nudity, hand to hand combat and CGI effects don't make sense in a film about the world's greatest detective, but we are in a world of decontruction and re-invention, and the actors and director pull it off quite well. Plus, there is a nice, albeit brief scene with Downey Jr. virtually naked handcuffed to a bed. One Week - Joshua Jackson stars in this Canadian film that follows one man's journey across Canada to find himself after he learns of the terminal illness housed in his body. Lots of great references to Canadian culture, as well as very insightful messages about love, family, individuality and the expectations of modern society. No real resolution or happy ending to this film, but it takes you on quite an emotional trip. Hachi, A Dog's Tale - advertised on the back as a 'heartwarming tale of a man and his dog' all I will say is that you need about 2 boxes of kleenex for this movie. Great if you need a good cry. Stars Richard Gere and Joan Allen, but the real star is a beautiful Akita. Have You Heard About the Morgans - starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker. Have you heard the nails being driven into the coffins off these two actor's careers? You will in this film. Pretty bland and boring attempt at romantic comedy. Grant gets a few laughs, but always in his usual schtick of making jokes at his own expense. For die-hard fans of each only! That's it for this month, will do my best to have some more recent theatrical leanings for you next time.

Threat Post... - Online survival guide
Clickjacking worm hits hundreds of thousands on Facebook !!! A vulnerability on Facebook forced hundreds of thousands of users to endorse a series of webpages over the holiday weekend, making the social networking site the latest venue for an attack known as clickjacking.
The exploit works by presenting people with friend profiles that recommend or "Like," in Faceboook. Links with titles including "LOL This girl gets OWNED after a POLICE OFFICER reads her STATUS MESSAGE." Those who click on the link see a page that's blank except for the words "Click here to continue." Clicking anywhere on the page automatically forces the person to add the link to his list of Likes.
Clickjacking is a term that was coined in late 2008 by web application security researchers Jeremiah Grossman and Robert "RSnake" Hansen. It describes attacks that allow malicious website publishers to control the links visitors click on. Virtually every browser is vulnerable, although many browsers come with safeguards that can make exploitation harder.
The Facebook worm that hit over the weekend superimposes an invisible iframe over the entire page that links back to the victim's Facebook page. As a result, as long as the person is logged in, his profile automatically recommends the link to new friends as soon as the page is clicked on.
Twitter was attacked by a series of clickjacking exploits last year that forced users to publish tweets against their will. The exploits stopped after company engineers finally tightened down their site. Facebook engineers will undoubtedly follow suit, if they haven't already. But this isn't the first time Facebook has been hit by clickjacking.
