Quote of the Month
The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals.
That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals.
It's just that they need more supervision. ~Lynn Lavner !

President's Message
Wow, it is time to get all the Pride preparations in order? Sorry the note is short this month, so much going on and we are all busy helping out to make your Pride Durham a huge success this year. So come on out on June 12th to Heydon Shore at Whitby for a great day of fun and games for the family. This year has a great deal of sponsors and planned activities; it will be fun for all ages. Please bring out your families because we are trying to work towards having something for everyone in your family. The Pride Durham evening event will be held at the Club and is for the 19 plus crowd. Again a fair amount of planning has gone into this venue, and we are looking at having a fun filled night, to end the day. Volunteers are always welcomed. As soon as this is completed, Pride Toronto follows and we will be having a float in that parade again this year. Details, I believe are just about finalized and I cannot advise on those. July first will be the Spearhead Leather and Denim Social Club's Annual Toronto Harbour Boat Cruise. It is a four hour Toronto Harbour Cruise with a meal and great music and non stop dancing for $45.00. It has grown over the last three years and was a total sellout last year. This year they have a bigger boat, and tickets are selling fast, so contact John Labarge to get your tickets. That's it for me! Back to work. Till next month, Play safe Regards Dan Caudle President

A message from King Benn Dover
Hello All!!
In our community it is very easy to get caught up in drama, rumours and prejudice. I'm sure we all have been a part of it at one time or another and more often than not, that is what stands out the most. We get caught up in it and all the good things we do often go unnoticed.
Although our community is smaller, we have shown over and over that we are capable of great things! We have an amazing group of people who have donated money, gifts and most of all their time to the causes we support within Club 717.... PFLAG, Aids, Durham Pride, Pride Prom, CAS to name just a few. I am very proud to be a part of group who continually gives with nothing expected in return. .... You have supported all these groups and continue to do so without question.
Every little bit helps and I am truly honoured and humbled to be part of such an amazing group. To the Performers, the Board, the Patrons, Sponsors, Community Groups and everyone who gives just a little (or in some cases.... gives alot!) I want to personally thank you all! You have made this year one that we can all be extremely proud of! It's not over yet and I know we can count on your continuous support. You have proved that together we can do great things!! Thank you for all your support, generosity, time and more than anything.....Thank you for your friendship! I am honoured to be a part of this community!!! Much Love to All King Benn Dover

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
Hello Club 717,
Wow, last month was a real rollercoaster ride with the major banks increasing their fixed rates not once, not twice, but three times!!
Without a doubt, this has not only motivated potential buyers to strike while rates were still low, but has also raised some concerns for clients new to the variable rate mortgage.
Even though this may seem all doom and gloom there are some who benefit from this increase. Many people who had arranged mortgage financing about two years ago secured a rate in the top end of the 5% range. Many were tempted this past year to break their mortgage terms in hopes of securing a much lower rate but where faced with penalties from $10,000.00 to $30,000.00.
Needless to say, many people decided not to proceed. If you, or someone you know were in this situation, now is a great time to revisit this option since rates are higher, penalties are a lot more reasonable and one can obtain a rate at least 1% lower then they currently have. To find out more please contact your trusted mortgage professional or myself...
Happy Spring and I will see you next month!

I would like to introduce our readers to one of the newest staff of the Aids Committee of Durham Region (ACDR).
Brianne Blackman
Volunteer Coordinator
Brianne started on February 16th, 2010 & she is welcome addition to the growing agency staff as the caseloads & needs of the clients have increased. Brianne graduated from Trent University with a degree in anthology in 2005. She then took the the Museum Management program at Sir Sanford Fleming College. Brianne felt that program taught the in's-and-out's of working for a non-profit organization. She had courses in fundraising & grant writing & administration which all prepared her for her position at ACDR. Brianne interest in volunteerism began during her 1st year at Trent. She started at Trent in 2000 & became involved in the Trent's Women's Centre & the Walkhome Program (a buddy system to make sure female students got safely home from night classes, the library etc.). Brianne said the past 2 months have been very busy & exciting. She strongly believes in the mission of ACDR & is proud to be part of the great team providing HIV/AIDS related services in the Durham region. She enjoys meeting & networking with some of the volunteers & looks forward to getting better acquainted with all volunteers that help contribute to the success of the agency. She encourages anyone interested in volunteering with the ACDR to give her a call at 905 576-1445 or email her at: volunteer@aidscommitteedurham.com to discuss how you can contribute. In particular the agency is looking for Bingo volunteers (Friday afternoon at the Red Barn in Oshawa) & volunteer drivers to take clients to medical appointments. Other needs for volunteer drivers: to pick up donated food >> both weekly & monthly); door people for monthly dances @ Club 717 (1st Saturday of the month) from September to June; raffle ticket sellers @ the monthly dances; online outreach; Special Events (Taste for Life) on April 28th); International Candlelight Memorial (May 16th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Memorial Park) & the annual Aids Walk in September & World Aids Day December 1st, 2010. Please consider this agency if you a few spare hours & would like to assist. Brianne would gladly meet with you. PLEASE NOTE: ACDR is in need of: grocery / shopping bags and canned high protein meats (ie: salmon, tuna etc). Club 717 will have 2 boxes near the community board for our members & guests to bring in their items, Thank You! If you know of a business that would like to be featured in a upcoming newsletter kindly have them contact myself. My contact details are below. Enjoy the spring time weather.

Well Pride 2010 in Durham is almost here. We have one of the most aggressive teams working together in the community to make our pride a success. All that is missing is you and your organization. For a low operating fee of $40 we are asking groups / organizations / companies to come set up a booth and be a part of Durham's Afternoon Pride Picnic on Saturday June 12th 2010. If your organization can not afford the $40 - we may have a sponsor who can adjust this so it is a sliding scale to ensure everyone has a chance to be a part of a growing event. We would also like to ask you to pass along this notice to your networks - so we do not forget or leave anyone out. This year's afternoon pride picnic promises to have a larger attendance. Please reply back to me so I can reserve your space ASAP. Pride is brought to you by PRIDE Durham and the many other organizations in Durham it is a collective event for 2010. for more information please visit there website: pridedurham.ca |

MAY GARDEN QUESTIONS Q: What garden plants would be good for an Ontario water garden? A: Arrowhead, Iris, Lobelia, Marsh Marigold, Water Lilies, Water forget-me nots, Pickerel weed, Unicorn Rush, Hornwort. These are some of the plants that I know are hardy to Ontario and I have tried some of these over the years. Some of these grow directly in the water, some in shallow water, some in wet soils and some will even grow in regular soil beside the pond (lobelia and Iris). A really good local source is Vandermeer Nursery Ltd. in Ajax. They have the ponds, the filters, the fish, the plants and the info. Sometimes it is good to shop around and see what plants you like. But that is a great place to start and gather your supplies and or info. Q: Where can I find G I A N T HOSTAS? A: From my quick search for varieties I found a few: Blue Angel 36" tall by 48" diameter Blue Umbrellas 36" tall by 48" spread Elegans 36" by 36" Empress Wu 48" tall by 48" spread Vandermeers and Sheridan Nursery in Whitby north are two local sources. If they do not have them you can look online for sources in Ontario. Q: What tall ornamental grasses can I plant to cover a tall fence where some are in full sun to full shade? Nothing seems to grow but weeds. A: The Miscanthus family has several tall grasses that grow in full sun. Miscanthus sinensis "Cabaret" at 6 feet
Miscanthus sinensis gracillus at 6 to 8 feet
Miscanthus sinensis "Silberfede" at 6 to 8 feet Sorghastrum - Indian Grass grows 4 to 6 feet in sun to part shade. Northern Sea Oats grows to 3 feet in sun or shade. I would be tempted to plant Boston Ivy on the fence. It grows in poor soils, will cling to the fence, takes sun or shade and grows rather quickly. In 3 years the fence could be covered. It's cousin, Virginia Creeper, is even a bit more vigorous. They have shiny green leaves all summer, get tiny clusters of blue fruit, like miniature grapes, and they have good fall colour or reds and burgundys and orange. Another question that I gat asked a lot is "WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY HANGING BASKETS? EVERY YEAR AROUND MIDSUMMER I HAVE TO REPLACE THEM. Hanging baskets are a high maintenance garden ornament. They require lots of water, lots of fertilizer and just more attention for dead heading or pruning. BUT If you buy that 8 to 10 inch pot of hanging plants, purchase a hanging basket that is much larger and transplant your smaller basket to the larger one. A 14 to 20 inch basket is ideal. Use a soil that is suitable for hanging baskets as it has water retention additive in the soil. Fertilize once per week with miracle grow or 20-20-20 and water when needed. If you skip a water, this can be detrimental as some plants will not come back, no matter how many prayers you say. But plants that can take some abuse or neglect, are geraniums, ivy geraniums, begonias, swedish ivy (plectranthus) and portulaca. So that's all for now folks. May your May Gardening get you off to a great start for the summer. Happy Gardening

Something to Say... - by Savanaugh
Oh the drama... drama...drama! I have always been in awe at the vast array of talents and gifts members of our community have to offer to each other and to the community. As I've written before... when push comes to shove, our community is there to support one another. Within our community is a wide spectrum of talents and abilities. Each of us has something to contribute and are more than willing to do so when called upon. I have recently however come to a conclusion. While we have so many great gifts to offer, we have one major fault. If things appear to be going too smoothly, are right on track or if life itself appears to becoming just a tad mundane and dare I use the word "normal"... guess what? We go crazy. It is like an illness within the community. Calm, normal, quiet and functioning - we don't like. Oh no...we need DRAMA! Who likes normal? Who likes functioning and success? Not our community - we like to see people topple and have to struggling to climb back up. We don't wish death on anyone, but a little misery - well that's entertaining! Quiet? Who wants that...when the waters are too still - we get nervous. We get bored. It is like cabin fever. The only way to break the monotony and boredom...spread some gossip! Gossip we do best! We are pros and there really is no topic off-limit. Who is sleeping with who, who was seen at Courtice beach, who didn't fill out the proper forms, which of us is having legal difficulties, who is closeted, which of us will f*%k anyone or anything, who has what fetish, who is broke, who hit who, our drug addicts, our alcoholics, who is on what committee, who is off what committee, who cheated, who lost their job, which of us stuff gerbils up our rectums - nothing is off limits. We get great pleasure in our community out of having that tidbit of dirt. Build someone up and then pull the rug from under them to enjoy the frantic topple to the ground. Then of course arrives the clean-up stage which we tend to enjoy just as much as the dirt itself. You know the stage... we probably should have a meeting, an intervention, fill out some paperwork, send lots of text messages, send letters. We probably need to sit down and have a one to one chat, followed by a two hour phone discussion as a follow-up. Once it is nearly resolved - then we have to gossip the details with more text messages, form another committee. Spread some more gossip, breach confidentiality. The new gossip requires another serious of interventions another committee and so on and so forth. Oh we like it girl! I've come to realize that this may very well be a vital component of our community. It seems to be so amusing and important that we absolutely MUST participate. We wake up as gay zombies every day.... programmed to find more dirt and spread it. Well, leave me out! There ya have it... Savanaugh had something to say! Oh by the way... I stuff more than just gerbils - spread that one around!

Reel World... - by Kevan Latrace
So guess what - I finally got a chance to see Avatar!! What is more, I got to see it in 3D, which certainly added to the experience of a visually stunning movie.
Now, in a previous column, I had gone on and on about how movies were relying so much on technical wizardry and were forgetting about the contribution of the human actors. I cried out in support of movies like "Precious" (which is playing at Club 717's movie night on May 13th) and cautioned against movies like "Avatar". Well, I got a little bit of criticism for that, as many felt that the acting in "Avatar" transcended the computer gimickry and special effects overload. And I really have to say.....people, what were you thinking?
I don't deny that there is a message burried in "Avatar", and that it is presented very well in the first half of the movie. The second half, however, is just a re-hash of every major sci-fi flick that James Cameron has ever made. We see recycled effects from "Aliens", "The Terminator" series and "The Abyss". As for the acting, the only one onscreen who made me even care about her was Sigourney Weaver....and ONLY when she was in her non-Avatar role. The rest were like watching paper cut-outs with people standing behind them screaming the dialogue - no expression, no heart, just words.
One thing I will say for "Avatar" is how well the 3D process was woven into the story. In the past, most 3D films I have experienced were shot in the process so that a few choice scenes were made to be more effective. This film embraced the possibilities that 3D provides, and shows what can be done with it. In retrospect, "Avatar" justly deserved all the technical awards it received at this year's Oscar ceremony.
Of course, just like every other 'new' development, there are those that are not going to use the technology to it's full potential - the one trailer that was shown before "Avatar" was for what looks like an absolute piece of crap called "Pirranah 3D". Instead of weaving the 3D process into the storyline, this film is obviously using it as a 'gimmick' to get people to come and see a film that they most likely would not go to if it wasn't in 3D. I am hoping people don't fall for it! Yours in truely,
Kevan Latrace

E-Mail Tracker Programs -- very interesting and a must read!!! The man that sent this information is a computer tech. He spends a lot of time clearing the junk off computers for people and listens to complaints about speed. All forwards are not bad, just some. Be sure you read the very last paragraph. He wrote: By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with snopes.com and/or truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites. Advice from snopes.com VERY IMPORTANT!! 1) Any time you see an email that says "forward this on to '10' (or however many) of your friends", "sign this petition", or "you'll get bad luck" or "you'll get good luck" or "you'll see something funny on your screen after you send it" or whatever --- it almost always has an email tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those folks you forward to. The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' email addresses to use in SPAM emails or sell to other spammers. Even when you get emails that demand you send the email on if you're not ashamed of God/Jesus --- that is email tracking, and they are playing on our conscience. These people don't care how they get your email addresses - just as long as they get them. Also, emails that talk about a missing child or a child with an incurable disease "how would you feel if that was your child" --- email tracking. Ignore them and don't participate! 2) Almost all emails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of email is, is a way to get names and 'cookie' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers -- to validate active email accounts for their own profitable purposes. You can do your Friends and Family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them. You will be providing a service to your friends. And you will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam emails in the future! Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listing regardless how inviting they might sound! Or make you feel guilty if you don't! It's all about getting email addresses and nothing more. You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT! Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a virus attached! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich! Let's not make it easy for them! Use Bcc at all times unless you absolutely want the others recipients to know whom you are also sending to.
ALSO: Email petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress of any other organization - i.e. social security, etc. To be acceptable, petitions must have a "signed signature" and full address of the person signing the petition, so this is a waste of time and you are just helping the email trackers.

What's Going on with LBT Women of Durham Region... - by Kim Etherington
Durham region has a thriving and active LBT community, but still I hear from women all the time wanting to connect with other women and expressing that they feel somewhat isolated in Durham region. In areas like Toronto the GLBT community is easily visible and people know where to go to socialize, get support and feel like part of a community. So I thought it might be nice to provide an update on what is happening for LBT women in Durham region. The Durham Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans Women's Group was started in 2003 by a couple women in the region who found that if they wanted to connect with a group of women for support and social networking, they often had to go into Toronto. Initially the group was small and met at a Whitby coffee shop once each month. The group grew quickly and soon began having their monthly meeting in various locations that would accommodate the group. Today the group meets the third Wednesday of each month (except July and August). The group now has almost 100 members and meetings usually have 15 - 30 women present. Women come to the group for many reason. Some come with the hopes of meeting someone or social networking, while others attend to receive support while they are dealing with issues related to their sexuality. The group offers support to women in various stages of coming out. It is a non-judgmental place to create a connection to the community. Members range from 20 - 70 years old and are just as diverse in all other ways. The DLBT June meeting is usually the biggest of the year. Many who only come once a year, will come to this meeting. The group holds a pot luck and gives everybody a chance to connect with summer plans and discuss plans to attend various Pride Events.
Meeting Dates: Wednesday, May 19th, 8 PM Wednesday, June 16th, 7 PM (annual Pot Luck) To get information on the group you can join the facebook page under Durham Lesbian, Bi, and Trans Women's Group. You can email dlbtgroup@hotmail.com or call Kim at 905-718-8877. |
