Fluctuations
Today's Word is.....
"FLUCTUATIONS"

I was at my bank today; there was a short line.

There was just one lady in front of me, an Asian lady who was trying to exchange yen for dollars.

It was obvious she was a little irritated . . . She asked the teller, "Why it change? Yesterday, I get two hunat dolla fo yen. Today I only get hunat eighty? Why it change?"

The teller shrugged his shoulders and said, "Fluctuations."

Asian lady says, "Fluc you white people too"

President's MessageDan Caudle - President

Wow! How can you tell spring has arrived?

March 12th's "The Switch Show" was a hit and was awesome and Thank You to everyone for the Birthday wishes that night. I actually fell asleep early in the evening, I am aging (Shut up!! I meant gracefully and without showing it) anyway I ended up in line. I finally did get in to see the very last part of the show. I heard the remarks of what a fantastic show it was and by the pictures, I am sorry I missed the beginning. So I would like to request a full replay!

Now, spring started with the annual Mardis Gras party at Club 717! This was held on March 19th. I know it is a Saturday and not Tuesday which is what Mardis Gras stands for, but we are not actually open on Tuesday, so deal with it!

What a great show it was Compliments to all involved. Brian and Lee you both did an amazing job with the decorations, in fact it was so nice we have decided to leave the stage for a while. The two of you completely set the atmosphere. Savanaugh as usual you carried it off and did a terrific job directing everyone, even the green fairy! Chardonnay and Benn as the lead characters put on a great show; Ruby, Madge and the unforgettable Edna were and always are the best compliment to any cast. Donny Thank you for being there to help them get in every practice and there were a lot of them, and to all those that were there in the beginning as well. My final word on this! SPECTACULAR, SPECTACULAR!!

March 24th, A conference was held by Community Development Council for Durham (CDCD) There were over 100 attendees, including a few from our Community, Jayme Harper (Pflag Canada), Aaron Cleveland (Pride Durham) and myself attended. The day proved to be both informative and educational. This was truly a conference about Diversity, although the primary focus was immigration to Canada. They have also included people with physical challenges and our entire community as part of this group of people.

March ended off with a performance from Savanuagh, Diva & Madg Enthat from Peterborough (The all F%$ked Up Show)...... What can I say...... It truly lived up to it's name !!!! Awesome job !!!.

Upcoming dates to remember are the 15th of May; This is the second Annual Pflag awards night. There were nomination forms left  at the bar. If you think anyone is worthy of an award for any outstanding contributions to the community, I hope you filled out your nominations and sent them in.

May 17th is Pflags International Day against homophobia and transphobia which involves several flag raising ceremonies at various City and Town halls along with some Municipal offices, show your support.

Other dates that you may want to note are June 12th which will be the day of Durham Pride, come on out and show your support, some good things are being planned. Pride will be held at Heydonshore in Whitby for the daytime, (Family portion).  The evening portion will be held at Club 717 for a buffet and Dance. Please show your support, we want to show our pride and they need our support, if we want this to get better each year.

You may have noticed that tickets are for sale for Spearhead's annual boat cruise at Toronto Harbour. Those that have attended the last few years know what an amazing time we have. Tickets are available from John Labarge, see him for details.

I want to say Thank you to John Duvall for continuing to have the Pot Lucks on a monthly basis, even though the attendance has not always been great. John does come up with new ideas every month and he has not given up on the concept. Things do tend to slow down from time to time but John has persevered and the attendance is starting to rebuild in momentum. Thanks for keeping it going!

I don't know if you have ever dropped in on a Thursday evening but Warren usually does and on most occasions will bring down a platter of sandwiches or a homemade pizza or two, Warren does this as his contribution to the community for no charge, Warren Thank You.

Jean Guy spent countless hours at the Club cleaning up the back areas that no one sees (Thank God) the hidden areas are all very organized now and the change room. The office has been cleaned up. Thank You Jean Guy and let's hope that everyone does their part to help keep it clean.

Club 717 is sitting in a decent position right now and we are trying to build upon things. There have been rumors that the Club has to move or is moving. This is not the case, it was suggested that we look for a larger venue by some members at one of our informal General Members Meetings. The Board has been inquiring but it is an expensive move and would not be worth our while at this time. You need to have the attendance nightly to sustain the venue for each night not just one night per week. Therefore we would need to have Crowds every night not just Fridays.

In discussing this with our accountant/auditor, he advises it is in our best interest not to venture into this additional expense at this time. He suggests if we plan big events that require a larger venue, we rent them a few times a year if necessary. I tend to agree with Rick on that.

So now that I have been quiet for the past couple of months, I guess you can tell Danny is back to himself and as usual has more then a mouthful to say. At this point I am sure you are tired of reading my article and saying as you read, he goes on! So I will close on that note.

Have a great month and you will hear from me next Month. Have a Happy Easter.

Regards

A message from Queen Candice Queen Candice

Hi Everybody,

This is going to be a short message. I've been very busy with my other charity work. So I've not been able to go to the bar as much as I wanted to.

However, I want to thank my husband Mr.Benn Dover for a great birthday show and a great idea. I FINALLY got to perform as a boy lol. I heard Moulin Rouge was a great success and 'way to go' to Savanaugh for your 'PFlag Fundraiser'. I can't wait to perform at Savaughna's next 'PFlag Fundraiser' at Woody's here in Toronto this month.

One more thing I would like to add, I'd "get ready everyone", Durham and Toronto's Pride is coming up in the next 2 months, so we're going to be busy, busy, busy!

See you all soon
Your friend and Queen,
Candice
Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
 Kristin Parker - Mortgage Specialist
Hello Club 717,

Lock in or stay variable?
The best way to answer this question is to consider the following; what are your mortgage goals? (i.e. the desire to pay it off as fast as possible) What is your risk tolerance? How comfortable are you with your mortgage payments fluctuating? Historically, people with variable rate mortgages pay off their mortgage faster due to a larger portion of their payments going towards their principle mortgage balance. There can be a difference of $10k or more compared to a fixed rate mortgage at the end of a 5 year term knocking years off your mortgage life cycle.  But how would you feel about your mortgage payment increasing by a possible $100 or $200?  Sometimes it's not always about the rate or the speed to which your mortgage is repaid, but more about making comfortable consistent payments in accordance to your lifestyle.

To learn more, or for assistance in determining what the best decision is for you, please contact your trusted mortgage consultant or myself for more information...

Happy Spring and I will see you next month!

Well Pride 2010 in Durham is almost here.

We have one of the most aggressive teams working together in the community to make our pride a success.  All that is missing is you and your organization. For a low operating fee of $40 we are asking groups / organizations / companies to come set up a booth and be a part of Durham's Afternoon Pride Picnic on Saturday June 12th 2010. If your organization can not afford the $40 - we may have a sponsor who can adjust this so it is a sliding scale to ensure everyone has a chance to be a part of a growing event.

We would also like to ask you to pass along this notice to your networks - so we do not forget or leave anyone out.
This year's afternoon pride picnic promises to have a larger attendance.  Please reply back to me so I can reserve your space ASAP.

Pride is brought to you by PRIDE Durhamand the many other organizations in Durham it is a collective event for 2010.

AIDS Committee of Durham Region Message

Mark Hammann - Gay Men's Outreach worker
The Since last fall's newsletter Gay Men's outreach has been renamed to M2M outreach. This change was to better reflect the entire community I am working with.

M2M (Man to Man) is a more inclusive term which covers gay, bi and MSM (men who have sex with men), in other words all men who enjoy the company of other men.

I've been working with Penny Foulds, an Intern student from Durham College.  I asked Penny to produce a special HIV 101 video for our website that would be more appealing than the HIV 101's that I had seen on YouTube.com.   She took off running with this project and produced what I believe is an outstanding educational video titled, "HIV & AIDS - Know the Facts".   This video is now on the AIDS Committee website and YouTube.com.  She is putting together another version of this video for the M2M Information Centre website (www.m2minfocentre.com).   This version will feature wording and images that are more appropriate for the M2M visitor to that site.   We hope to have this version ready within the coming weeks.

In February, I attended the Ontario Gay Men's Health Summit in Toronto.   I found the session on 'Working with gay/bi/MSM outside of the GTA' to be of particular interest to my work here in Durham.  I found the MSM Infrastructure Study done by the AIDS Network in Hamilton of particular interest with it's similarity to the project that the AIDS Committee and the Community Development Council of Durham conducted over the last couple of years with our 'Visioning Days'.   PARN (Peterborough AIDS Resource Network) presented on the work of their Gay Men's Project in a rural setting.  Their step by step (one by one) approach to reaching and building the LGBTQ community in such a large rural catchment area is an approach we could develop here in Durham.  PARN's outreach along with working closely with their local university and other organizations has been very effective in development of the Peterborough Pride parade.

Robert Carr from the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO) gave a global perspective on anti-homophobia and human rights work at the summit.  Mr. Carr's presentation clearly showed how homophobia leads to higher HIV infection rates.  I brought back some valuable graphs and information on how homophobia increases the transmission of HIV, these materials will be excellent tools when giving presentations on both homophobia and HIV.

The M2M Information Centre website continues to grow with the addition of 'How to Connect' a page which shares information on how men can meet other men in the region.  'M2M Over 50' is a page dealing with concerns and issues of an aging M2M population and also contains HIV information as it pertains to older men.   'M2M Health Notices' has also been added to the site, the page shares important and current health information of concern for M2M from public health sources.
These are just some of the projects I am working on and many new projects for the coming months are already in the planning stages.   I welcome feedback and/or the thoughts of our community, please feel free to contact me by email: M2M@aidsdurham.com or by Phone:  (905) 576-1445 - Mon. - Fri. 9AM to 5PM.

April in the Garden,

If you didn't do a fall cleanup you can start any time now.  Cut back all those perennials, grasses and any old annuals that were left in the garden.  It is a good time to prune shrubs and trees that flower late in the seaon, mid summer to fall.  Any spring flowering shrubs as forsythia, lilacs, azaleas, rhododendrons,etc, - do  NOT  prune until after they have flowered, or you will lose all your flowers.

Pruning now is easier because you can see the  frame or structure of the shrub.  So prune off any dead branches;  prune off any branches that cross each other; and prune branches to create a more open an airy centre of the shrub as this lets more sunshine in to create stronger growth for better flowering or fruiting  if it is a fruit tree.  Also your shrub or tree is there to satisfy your wants for its positioning.  So if you are growing a shrub on the fenceline and want it to be sort of flat against the fence, then you would prune off any braches that are growing perpendicular to the fence, so you are left with branches that run parallel to the fence.  If your shrub or tree is 10 feet wide but you want a shrub only 6 feet wide, then you need to prune it into the size that you want it to be.  You may have to do more pruning through the summer to keep it that size, but that's  OK.

This month I have decided to talk about a  DIY project that will add some flair  to your garden.  It's called a  SUCCULENT  PLANT  FRAME. By simply using an old picture frame, you can make living outdoor wall art that will become the focal point of your patio or deck area.

These picture frame hanging planters can be filled with succulents, such as hens and chicks, creeping sedums  or other fleshy leaved small creeping plants.  And you can add some driftwood,  interesting shells, coloured tiles or just about anything that grabs your creative interest.

HERE'S HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SUCCULENT FRAME

1. You can use any old frame - and any size  - as long as it is 2 inches or more in depth.

2. To make your own, choose any kind of wood or driftwood that you want.  The pieces of wood can be any length.  Just make sure you choose wood that is at leat 2 inches deep.  Nail the pieces together into the frame.  Now you have a custom frame that is 2 inches deep.

3.  Staple or nail 1/2 inch hardware wire mesh to one side of the open frame.  If desired, add trim on top to hide the wire mesh.

4. Then staple or nail a piece of exterior plywood or redwood(cedar) on to the other side (the open back) of the frame.  There don't need to be any drainage holes.

5.  Place the frame flat on a table so the plywood backing is down and the wire mesh is facing upwards.  Now your planter is ready to fill with good loamy growing medium.  Fill to the wire mesh.

6.  Carefully work  your plants into each wire mesh square.

7.  This is where you can get creative by adding in driftwood, coloured tiles, sea shells, etc.

8. Once your planter is done, allow it to stay flat.  Place it in full sun, and water when needed until the plants are well rooted.  This can take from 3 to 4 months.

9.  You will be able to tell when the plants are rooted;  when you gently tug on them they will feel firmly rooted.

10. Now you can hang your living artwork anywhere you want as long as the plants get the light and water they need to stay healthy.

So Good Luck with you Gardens and any projects that you may undertake.

Happy Easter
Happy Spring
Happy Gardening
And everything!!!

Till next time,

Charlie

Something to Say... Savanaugh - Something to Say - by Savanaugh

Being the quiet, soft-spoken drag queen that I am, you might find it unusual that I would chose to write such a self-inflating and self-promoting article this month.  Be assured however, its intention is not self-inflating but rather PERFORMER inflating!!!

The Queens and Kings of our club often find themselves the butt of ridicule and laughs.... with patrons making comments that we are tired, old, dried up Queens.  I recently overheard a couple of regular patrons of our club comment that our performers make drag look bad and that we are not of the caliber of Toronto Queens.  Well Savanaugh's had enough of it and is fully prepared to come to the full support of our performers.

Do our performers have the perfect "look" of the female impersonators of Toronto?  Of course not, but then again... we are not female impersonators.  We are old school drag Queens and Kings.  Somewhere along the lines, we have lost track of what drag is all about.  Drag is a political and social statement about gender.  Drag is tongue-in-cheek humour.   Drag is about pushing social norms and values to their extreme.  Drag is comedy, drag is social and drag is political.

What our performers may lack in "look" compared to our Toronto counter-parts, many certainly make up for in effort and stamina.  I challenge some of the Toronto performers to be able to put together the major productions that we do at Club 717, especially under the budget we must work within.  What other local community bars are successful at hosting such productions as Mamma Mia, Priscilla, or our recent Moulin Rouge.  What other community bars are able to put events such as the New Years, Superbowl and Oscar parties together?  What other local bars have such rich traditiosn as our annual King/Queens, Mardi-Gras and Pride celebrations?  What other group of performers do more fundraising and free performances?  Finally, what other community bars are able to put original productions such as my "Any Once Upon A Time" on stage?    The answer is a definitive NONE!!!!!   Even our Toronto bars and clubs don't even attempt such huge performances.

I think it is extremely important that our patrons understand the TREMENDOUS  amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to give you that two hours of a production such as Moulin Rouge.  It all starts with an idea, then presenting it to the Board, then finding performers, getting budget's approved, getting decorations and sets organized and beginning the draftings of scripts.  Then we move into rehearsals.  Two rehearsals a week for two to three months.  Each rehearsal is a minimum of two solid hours.  As we approach performance, we are now talking three to four rehearsals a week.  Then script writing boards, lighting design,  installation of sets, costumes, final set lists, final edited copies of music and dress rehearsals.  Finally, three months and hundreds of hours later, a two hour production is presented on stage.

A two-hour production, full of energy and passion.... to have some patron poke fun at the poor quality of drag performances.  Did I already mention that we also have our regular full-time jobs and responsibilities?  Didn't think so!

This message is to the few in minority I know.  Overall, the performers at Club 717 feel supported.  However, the next time you hear some old fool grumbling on about the shows.... do me a huge favour?  Walk up to them and ask them why they are there on a Friday night and why they didn't bother to bring a dress and wig themselves oh ya... and ask them to donate a hundred hours of their time to help make our shows even better!!!!!
Boy, did Savanaugh have something to say!!!
Reel World... Kevan Latrace - by Kevan Latrace

"Coming Soon" To A Theatre Near You

Now that the world has exhaled after seeing Sandra Bullock holding an Oscar she wasn't presenting to someone else, and has moved on to the oh-so-much-more important things like who her husband was sleeping with while she was picking up all those awards, we can now move on to what I like to call "Coming Soon" season.

This is the release period between 'Important Films' season of the fall and winter and 'Blockbuster' season of the summer - it's a time when many movies that have little or no expectations are released and everyone just croses their fingers and hopes for the best.  A quick perusal of the 'Coming Soon' section of any movie website or the trailers at your local theatre reveals some interesting options in the coming months.....

Clash of the Titans/Clash of the Titans in 3D - release date April 2/10
This is a remake of a 1981 film that I distinctly remember having to see when I was in my teens....though I think I felt I had to see it because there was a lead male character who spent the entire movie in loincloths and a little bit of body armour.  Based on the Greek myth of Perseus, we get to see how gods and man interacted in ancient Greece.  The advent of CGI should make the effects much more interesting, and it looks like the producers have jumped onto the current 3D bandwagon with relish.
Nightmare on Elm Street - release date April 23/10

Freddy Kruger is back, it would seem.  Just how many sequels did the original of this low-budget horror flick spawn?  I lost count around 5 or 6....the new flick looks like it will actually show what happened to poor Freddy and why he is so ticked off at all these kids, something that was only suggested in flashback in the original films.  Jackie Earl Haley has made quite the career comeback playing these types of really creepy roles, so I am looking forward to his portrayal of Kruger.   My only wish - any chance Johnny Depp, who appeared in a small role in the original, will make a cameo appearance?

The Karate Kid - release date June 11/10 - The original story is transplanted to China, and they are actually doing kung fu, not karate - but this looks like a very interesting father/son project from Jaden Smith and his dad, actor/rapper Will.  It brings in Jackie Chan for some credibility on the martial arts, and appears to have some themes about racism that don't actually involve white people.  Looks like it could be fun.
What else is out there?  Iron Man 2, Twilight Saga:Eclipse, Toy Story 3, The A Team (yes, they made a movie!), Survival of the Living Dead (???), Sex and the City 2.....and keep in mind that these are the ones that DON'T have high expectations.  Can't wait to see what is on tap for the summer months.

Yours in truely,
