Happy Pride!!!!!!
As I write this we are in the midst of getting ready for Toronto Pride this weekend. We are working hard to bring a fantastic float to the parade this year. Since it is the 30th anniversary of Pride Toronto, we have decided to have `Celebrities` from the past 3 decades on our float! Keep an eye out for Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Cindy Lauper and Boy George!! A huge thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!!!
Don`t forget our Open Pride show this Friday hosted by myself and Queen Candice. We are hoping to get a lot of the performers who are on the float out to show their Pride outfits!! What a good looking bunch! Thanks for all your help!!!
It has been an incredibly busy couple months around the Club and Community in general. After this week things should slow down a little for the summer. Club 717`s Got Talent will be starting up again August 8th. Anyone interested in competing should talk to the Entertainment Team. It`s alot of fun, and who knows, you may just walk away with first prize!!!
The new King and Queen Competition is also approaching quickly! We are working on the package and will have it ready very soon. If you are interested in running, see the Entertainment Team, myself or Queen Candice. We have a lot of Kings and Queens who would do an amazing job representing Club 717 as Queen or King. It has been an amazing experience being King. I have been very fortunate to have a great group of friends to work with and help to lighten the load. Everyone has been incredibly supportive and I truly appreciate it!
Hope to see everyone this weekend! Come out and show your Pride!! I hope everyone has a great weekend. With Pride, King Benn Dover

A message from Queen Candice
Hi there everyone!
Well Pride Durham is over and I have to say that Chardonnay aka Jean-Guy is one of the hardest working people I've ever met and my hat goes off to him as a VERY big thank you.
I got to spend Pride Durham weekend with an incredible couple who made me feel like family; I think you might know who they are: My King Benn Dover and his lovely wife Amanda. The day of Pride Durham was quite enjoyable. I was able to sit back and chat with people without the worries of my makeup and hair being ok.
The Toronto open-stage show was a lot of fun; thanks to all the entertainers who came out to help us as well as to those entertainers who donated those INCREDIBLE baskets! I wish I could have been able to attend Ruby's 29th Birthday ha ha ha, from what I understand she won't remember it anyway!
Can't wait to party with everyone at Toronto's Pride as I have cleared my schedule to spend all day with my Oshawa family.
A Special mention to Savanaugh for hosting the Pride Durham Show; certainly not an easy job, but you made it look flawless!!!!
All my love Your Queen of Club 717 Candice

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
Hello Club 717,
Ever get frustrated with credit card or loan debt? Does it seem like no matter how much money you put on your credit cards, it just gets eaten up in interest at the end of the month? Is all you're hard earned cash going towards your debts and you just can't pay everything off?
How about putting your mortgage or the equity in your home to work for you and create some positive cash flow by consolidating all that debt into one low payment? Two methods we can employ are the traditional mortgage refinance or the secured line of credit. If you, like many other people who recently inquired about the cost of breaking their mortgage term only to find the penalty to be too much to stomach, the secured personal credit line is the perfect alternative. Your current mortgage stays in tact while you enjoy the low interest savings. Credit card rates range anywhere from 19% to 28% while the equity lines start at a great low rate of 3.50% (prime 2.50% + 1%) This huge difference in rate can create up to $100 to $200 in additional free money. For more information please contact your trusted mortgage professional or myself and start saving today!!
Have a great summer!!

AIDS Committee of Durahm Region Message
Over the past seven years, Ontario has seen a huge increase in syphilis cases. The hardest hit community is the M2M (gay, bi and MSM) community which has accounted for over 80% of infections. In addition, approximately half of those syphilis cases in 2009 were among HIV-positive men. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria that attacks the body in three stages. You can have syphilis and not know it. While some people develop visible symptoms, many others do not.
The first signs of syphilis (known as Stage one) surface anywhere from 10 to 90 days after exposure. You may notice painless sores on your penis, near your anus, or in your throat. Trans guys may notice painless sores in your frontal genital area. The sores will go away after 3 to 6 weeks however, the syphilis infection doesn't go away! In Stage two, 4 to 10 weeks after the sores, you may notice a red rash on your chest, palms, genitals, or the soles of your feet. Muscle and joint pain, fever and patchy hair loss are also common symptoms. Again, these symptoms can go away without treatment, but the infection is still active. With Stage three, the sores and rashes will be gone but the syphilis will live on. Over time bacteria will attack your body causing serious damage to your brain, heart, eyes and bones. This process occurs over a 10 to 30 year period.
If you're HIV positive syphilis can hit you harder, faster and can be more difficult to treat. If you have a syphilis infection, you're more likely to get HIV or pass it on to someone if you have unsafe sex. Syphilis is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact and by sharing drug equipment. Trans guys should take note that sharing needles to inject hormones is also considered a high risk activity.
A simple blood test is all that is needed to tell if you have syphilis. It is good to get tested because if syphilis is caught early it can be treated with antibiotics. To protect yourself from syphilis always use condoms. Condoms are not foolproof, but they're better than nothing. Using a condom for oral sex can also provide protection. Using dental dams and not sharing drug paraphernalia can help prevent infection. Get tested on a regular basis for syphilis, even if you've had syphilis before because you can get it again.
You can get tested by your family doctor, one of the three sexual health clinics in Durham Region or contact the AIDS and Sexual Health Info-line at 1-800-668-2437. More information is available from our offices at 22 King Street West in Oshawa (Suite 202 on the second floor) or look for 'Attack of the Cursed Syphilis' and 'Safer Sex kits' which you can find at the Club. 'Attack of the Cursed Syphilis' is a campaign that was created by ACT (AIDS Committee of Toronto) and is being promoted across the province by the GMSH (Gay Men's Sexual Health Alliance) which I participate as a representative for Durham Region.
Together we can help bring syphilis out of the depths and prevent its spread in our community! Mark Hammann

A Message from Pride Durahm
Dear LGBTQ Community of Durham Region, I am proud of Pride Durham 2010 as it was the best one of ever in its history. Even though it rained we were lucky that the Pavilion was available. The weather did not dampen peoples' excitement about Pride Durham. Our attendance was over 300 during the day event & the night event was over 100 people or more. Leo the Lion was a hit with the kids and every kid/youth left with a prize and a ribbon stating that they were a participant. We had the highest amount of Community & Sponsor Booths ever. Comments & feedback was positive and amazing. Thank you to all of the Sponsors for donating funds towards the event, for donating gift prizes and for participating with a Booth at the day event. You all came through for the LGBTQ Community of the Durham Region to show your support. We hope that we can count on you all for next year's Pride Durham 2011. I would like to thank again the Pride Durham Committee for their outstanding commitment and hard work towards the day & night event. Also to all of the volunteers that assisted us during the day event from selling 50/50's, raffle tickets, greeting people to selling the food. WOW, what an amazing group of people! The Board of Directors of Pride Durham Inc. is still meeting even with the event being over, as we are now working on major ideas for next Pride Durham 2011. We are creating & designing a new website. We are getting some special discounts for our Pride Durham members. The list goes on and on! So keep your eyes open as more things are to come. Remember one thing; Be Proud of whom you are, no matter what they say, words cannot put us down. Cause we are beautiful in every single way! We are "Alive with Pride"! Yours truly,
Jean-Guy Dugas President Pride Durham Inc.

JULY IN THE GARDEN I have received a couple of different questions this month. 1. What is the difference between turf grass seed and lawn grass seed? Depending on the supplier, there may be no difference at all. But usually, lawn grass, for the home garden contains a higher percentage of Kentucky blue grass, because this is fairly tough, has good colour, performs all season, withstands traffic and various cutting heights. Turf grass, in my mind is used more in public parks, fairways on golfcourses and in places in need of more tough wear because of more foot traffic or sports or just more plain old use. These grasses would have more perennial ryegrass, red fescue, rough blue grass and probably still contains some Kentucky blue. Most suppliers have there own house blend of grass seed and labelling it to make it more marketable. There are shade blends, full sun blends, high traffic grass, grass for drought, grass for damp locations. No matter what you have overseeded with, the strongest grass for your conditions will survive with adequate care and give you a decent lawn. If you are more pernickity, about your lawn, you can go to a supplier and tell them your site conditions and they will blend a grass mix for you, for a pretty good price. So keep your blades sharp and cut at least once per week. By keeping your lawn height at 2 to 3 inches helps maintain a healthy lawn and smother out some of the weeds. 2. Now that my pond is in place with waterfall, I have crevices between the rocks. What type of plants can I plant in these crevices? Sempervirens (hens and chicks) Veronica prostrata Saxifragas Dianthus - small low growing Linum Campanula Lamium Mini Iris- rock garden Iris Small grasses - Carex Hostas - tiny ones like stilletto If these areas are damp, you can plant marginal pond plants. 3. What is a biennial plant? A biennial plant is one that matures in the second year. The first year's growth is green leaves and in year two it will flower and then die. But usually before dying it spreads it's seed far and wide. Canterbury bells, the money plant, foxglove, some dianthus, are a few of these types of plants. 4. Will anything grow in my basement apartment that has only one small window? There is a whole list of plants that will grow in low light. But if you could supply some additional lighting with a lamp or two and use grow lights, you will be more successful. Most of your grocery stores and hardware stores sell houseplants that would be suitable to grow. Within 6 months to two years these plants will probably become very leggy and tired. So I would treat them as seasonal plants that I would replace from time to time as needed. I am not trying to discourage you. I just want you to know that it is okay to replace a plant that is not faring well. Anyhow , here are some suggestions: Maranta - prayer plant Fittonias Ficus Dracaena Schefflera Diffenbachia Chlorophytum And most houseplants prefer to be on the dry side in the winter, or they can rot, from being overwatered. And if you like to fertilize, do it only from April till October, and once per month should be enough. And so ends my tips for July. So far with all the rain we've been having, it's grass cutting, weed pulling, shrub trimming and dead heading perennials. But we still need to water the baskets and planters and keep them fertilized too! Happy Gardening and have a Great Summer!

Sorry to rain on everybody's Pride Parade - but I'm just tired!!!!! I'm tired of the rainbow flag. I'm tired of all of the labels applied to everyone within the community. I'm tired of all of the mainstream advertising participating in opportunistic homophobia. I'm tired of the banners with desperate attempts at social and political statements. I'm exhausted reading the same old gay anthems and clichés on our t-shirts. I'm tired of the naked bodies parading through Yonge Street.... okay we can keep that one!!!! Don't get me wrong, I am the first person to express my own Pride. I am very proud of my children and the blended family we have successfully created. I am proud of my students who show such courage when facing homophobia in their schools and community. I am proud of our community. Pride for me is daily, not something I need a banner or a parade for. Given the amount of political and social activism work that I do, people are often surprised at my position on Gay Pride. For me however, the end goal is a day with no parade. A day when the rainbow flag has little meaning. A day when I don't feel the need to display my sexuality on the bumper of my car with "Proud Family" stickers. It is about normalcy. I am at the stage in my life where I just want to blend. I want to be noticed and acknowledged, but blend. To be a part of mainstream society, not a circus act on the fringe. To reach that day however, there continues to be a lot of necessary work. Homophobia still continues. Our youth still struggle. Laws continue to discriminate. So, a Pride Parade it will be for a few more years... maybe decades. So there I'll be... marching with Club 717. Both of my kids joining. My son wearing his t-shirt proclaiming "does my dad make me look gay" and my daughter displaying "don't make my dad put his purse down." Disco will blare, water guns will squirt, commercialism will prevail... and naked bodies will be displayed. This year, nobody will be raining on our Pride Parade!
Happy Pride Everyone! Savanaugh,

Threat Post... - Online survival guide
Debunking some common Myths
There are some common myths that may influence your online security practices. Knowing the truth will allow you to make better decisions about how to protect yourself.
How are these myths established? There is no one cause for these myths. They may have been formed because of a lack of information, an assumption, knowledge of a specific case that was then generalized, or some other source. As with any myth, they are passed from one individual to another, usually because they seem legitimate enough to be true.
Why is it important to know the truth? While believing these myths may not present a direct threat, they may cause you to be more lax about your security habits. If you are not diligent about protecting yourself, you may be more likely to become a victim of an attack.
What are some common myths, and what is the truth behind them?
Myth: Anti-virus software and firewalls are 100% effective. Truth: Anti-virus software and firewalls are important elements to protecting your information. However, neither of these elements are guaranteed to protect you from an attack. Combining these technologies with good security habits is the best way to reduce your risk.
Myth: Once software is installed on your computer, you do not have to worry about it anymore. Truth: Vendors may release patches or updated versions of software to address problems or fix vulnerabilities. You should install the patches as soon as possible; some software even offers the option to obtain updates automatically. Making sure that you have the latest virus definitions for your anti-virus software is especially important.
Myth: There is nothing important on your machine, so you do not need to protect it. Truth: Your opinion about what is important may differ from an attacker's opinion. If you have personal or financial data on your computer, attackers may be able to collect it and use it for their own financial gain. Even if you do not store that kind of information on your computer, an attacker who can gain control of your computer may be able to use it in attacks against other people.
Myth: Attackers only target people with money. Truth: Anyone can become a victim of identity theft. Attackers look for the biggest reward for the least amount of effort, so they typically target databases that store information about many people. If your information happens to be in the database, it could be collected and used for malicious purposes. It is important to pay attention to your credit information so that you can minimize any potential damage.
Myth: When computers slow down, it means that they are old and should be replaced. Truth: It is possible that running newer or larger software programs on an older computer could lead to slow performance, but you may just need to replace or upgrade a particular component (memory, operating system, CD or DVD drive, etc.). Another possibility is that there are other processes or programs running in the background. If your computer has suddenly become slower, you may be experiencing a denial-of-service attack or have spyware on your machine. |
