Manure... An interesting fact..
for when people ask what you learned today ...
Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizer's invention. So large shipments of manure were common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term 'Ship High In Transit' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.
Thus evolved the term 'S.H.I.T', (Ship High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word. Neither did I. I thought it was a golf term.

'The Indian with One Testicle'
There once was an Indian who had only one testicle and whose given name was 'Onestone'. He hated that name and asked everyone not to call him Onestone.
After years and years of torment, Onestone finally cracked and said,' If anyone calls me Onestone again I will kill them!' The word got around and nobody called him that any more.
Then one day a young woman named Blue Bird forgot and said, 'Good morning, Onestone.' He jumped up, grabbed her and took her deep into the forest where he made love to her all day and all night. He made love to her all the next day, until Blue Bird died from exhaustion.
The word got around that Onestone meant what he promised he would do. Years went by and no one dared call him by his given name until A woman named Yellow Bird returned to the village after being away. Yellow Bird, who was Blue Bird's cousin, was overjoyed when she saw Onestone. She hugged him and said, 'Good to see you, Onestone.' Onestone grabbed her, took her deep into the forest, then he made love to her all day, made love to her all night, made love to her all the next day, made love to her all the next night, butYellow Bird wouldn't die!
Why ??? OH, come on... take a guess !!! Think about it !!! You're going to love this !!!
Everyone knows... You can't kill Two Birds with OneStone!!!

 Greetings!
It doesn't seem possible that February is over. We had a lot of successful events this month. The monthly AIDS's Committee of Durham Region's Fundraiser dance was "the best yet." This was followed by the Superbowl Party. The Club held a fundraiser for PFLAG that was hosted by Savanaugh. This was another huge success, and a subatantial amount of money was raised for PFLAG. And on Sunday evenings, The Rising Star competition has been gathering popularity. Special Thanks goes out to all who helped make these events go smoothly. Congratulations to all the competitors !! It's not always easy to hear some of the judges comments !! Thank you for entertaining us !!
I'd like to single out one event. The Valentines Dance/Party. Jean-Guy and his team did a great job with the decorations, games and food !!! Thank you to everyone that helped !!
Please take a minute and thank your EXTREMELY generous Newsletter Sponsors. On top of paying for the Newsletter Sponsorship they contributed some amazing prizes and financial support. Their combined efforts generated over 30 prizes.
Thank you to our Sponsors for all the amazing gifts and prizes for the Valentine's Party:

President's Message
Wow, I can't believe it is already March and we are approaching Spring. Time is going by so quickly this year, Sorry for the lack of reports or messages over the past couple of months, I am dealing with a Family illness and it has been rough. The Club is as usual operating nicely and all is Well, So many Shows and so little time, I know Donny and Jean Guy have been reporting on Entertainment and John has advised how we are financially. I have read that Steve O is up to date on what is happening with the membership and our King and Queen have been busy dazzling us with the line up of shows. The Karaoke Competition ended on Feb 28th and Congratulations to the top three. The first place winner is Donna, Second went to Candice (Not the queen), although she did wear a queen's outfit and sang one of Candice's favorites) and third place went to Chuck. Thank you to the three of you for coming out for the past several weeks and entertaining us with your voices. You all are awesome singers. I am keeping this very short right now, as I just want to let everyone know we are on top of things and all is well with the Club. I will write more once I get settled with family things! Have a Happy Easter. Regards Dan Caudle President

Entertainment Directors Report - by Donny
Hey guys, well February was another jam packed month at the club. We kicked off the month with Twiggy, Ivy and Mirage and it was a great time. Then we had the Aids Fundraiser Dance and Singer and that was one of the best nights that they have had raising alot of money. Then we had our Annual Superbowl Party hosted By Kelly Hummell. It was alot of fun and even those who knew nothing about football had a blast. Thanks Kelly, yet again you put on a great party!!!!
The following week was our Valentine's weekend.....we kicked it off with Queen Candice and Chardonnay hosting with their very special guest Farra N Hyte. It was an AMAZING night, fun was had by everyone. The Saturday night dance was hosted by Chardonnay and like the good old days she did not disappoint us with 30 gifts that she raffled off and the numbers she did, the crowd had a blast.....Thanks Chardonnay for all of the time and energy you put into the night!!!
The following week saw King Benn, Queen Mum Ruby and again the trouper Chardonnay with their special guest Nikki Chin doing a night of Disco. T.hey brought the house down and we all had a good time and some great laughs. After, we had Cathy spinning the tunes and she had the place hopping. The dance floor was packed.
We held a fundraiser that was hosted by Savanaugh for PFLAG. What a night and the list of entertainers that came out to support the cause was AWESOME!! And thank you goes out to everyone who helped them raise over $1,200.00.
The last weekend of the month was a PARTY to say the least. We had Queen Candice and Billie's Birthday Bash on the Friday. The house rocked with 15 performers and yes the show was long but hey come on, it was a special night and there was enough cake to feed an army or a few of us fat bitches 3 to be exact but everyone had fun and enjoyed the cakes.
Well the 28th was the Finals of The Rising Star Competition and what a night it was. Our three finalist's delivered a show that was awesome to hear and see. The judging was freaking hard, glad I was not one of them....the scores were so close.....I would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to Donna who took home First Place and $500.00. I have included a few pics for everyone to see how much fun it was. I have to give a special thanks to our judges Annette, Kelly and John. Special thanks to Donny from Krazy Ray's for hosting the competition and everyone who was there weekly to support the contestants, thank you...
Well now March is upon us and we kick it off with The Fellatio Sisters and a Special Presentation to Larry Chapman as Member of The Year!!!! We are also under way with our Mardi Gras weekend. It looks like it is going to be alot of fun. They have been rehearsing for Moulin Rouge.... soooooo it should be fun!!!!!(March 19th & 20th).
Well now I have to say a very heart felt THANK YOU to someone who with out him my life would be even more crazier than it already is: Jean Guy you are always there for me and have helped me so much especially when I get moody and stressed you just look at me and say deep breath in and out.....I know that working with me is not easy sometimes but again Thank You.
Well guys check out our website for upcoming stuff. It is jam packed with all the info you could need and if there is something that you need or more info please drop me an email.
Till next month, come on down. There is always something happening at the club. Oh and a little birdie told me that we might be having another round of a great competition starting in April ......I will keep you posted and updated as more info comes my way!!!!

A Message from King Benn
Hey everyone,
Well looks like I fell asleep at the switch and missed submitting for the past newsletter. My apologies! It's been a very busy time around here but things are settling down somewhat. Amanda is healing nicely from her knee replacement and life is getting back to normal. We have been hard at work with Music inspired by Moulin Rouge for Mardi Gras along with our regular Friday night shows. Hats off to Savanaugh and the crew for a fantastic PFLAG Fundraiser. It is great to be a part of such a successful event! In March I will be hosting ``Benn's Wacky Switch Birthday Show``. Come out and see some of your fav Drag Kings and Queens as you have never seen them before...Kings in dresses and Queens as butch men!! Should be a blast!!! Pride will be upon us before we know it. I am looking forward to working with Candice, the Entertainment Team, performers and volunteers to make this year's float another great one!! Let`s show them what Club 717 is made of!!! Well I am off to practice the Tango...Hope to see you all out to the Club soon!!
Take care!! Benn Dover King of Club 717

A message from Queen Candice
Hi everyone,
I just want to say thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate my birthday and also thank you to all of the people supporting Savanaugh's fundraiser for PFlag.
I wish i could have been there, however I was attending a Charity Ball in Connecticut.
Thank you to each and every performer, staff, and public of Club 717 for opening your doors and welcoming Toronto in to your amazingly passionate family. I'm honoured to represent Club 717 and the people in any way I can at any capacity.
I'm so looking forward to switching my King (to) Benn Dover to a FABULOUS drag queen on 'Switch Night', and I hope everyone can be there to celebrate his birthday, support, and have a great time.
Yours Truely Queen 717 Candice.
See you all soon

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
Hello Club 717,
A recent announcement from the Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty had the media buzzing with rumours of new government policies making the real estate market difficult for first time homebuyers. The changes, which are set to take effect April 19th 2010, include; a requirement of clients to qualify for financing using 5 year fixed rate mortgage, those looking to refinance their property to access equity can only do so up to 90% of the home value and lastly, investors looking to purchase an non owner occupied property will be required to have a 20% down payment.
With further investigation, one can see that these new guidelines have minimal consequence on the first time homebuyer and more so on investors who prefer to purchase properties with little down. What has been deemed the 'difficult' factor for new comers is meeting the qualifications of the 5 year fixed rate. At present when mortgagers apply for either a variable rate mortgage or a fixed rate mortgage with a term less then 5 years lenders insist that the client qualify at a 3 year fixed rate. At present the 3 yr fixed rate is 3.50% with a 5 year at 3.79%. The difference in these rates is not enough to jeopardize someone's eligibility.
To learn more about these changes or to take advantage of the current guidelines before the new rules take effect April 19th please contact your trusted mortgage agent or myself toll free at 1-866-480-0711.
See you next month!

My Sister's Voice is a non-profit charitable organization that provides mentoring, support, counselling and education services to women who have been marginalized by abuse, violence, poverty, hate crimes or sexual orientation. Services are provided to foster self-esteem and confidence and are founded on the core values of equity, diversity, unity, and empowerment. The experience of women in our society is both unique and universal. We experience diverse life circumstances, some rooted in joy and success, while others are mired in challenges and struggles. We are influenced by our cultural upbringing, our position in society, our sexuality and gender identity, and the opportunities with which we are presented. While we often focus on our differences and label ourselves based on our own negative and limiting experiences, we are all women. My Sister's Voice was founded in 2009 by a group of women who believe in the value of unity amongst women especially in the face of great diversity. While recognizing some of the more common challenges that women face today, My Sister's Voice works to provide opportunities for women to work together and support each other while transforming their lives. The organization offers programs and services that are founded on the core values of equity, diversity, unity and the empowerment of women. Diane Cassidy and Kim Etherington. sacredquest@rogers.com

The Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto is going to Mexico the end of June this year. They will be representing the Canadian Church {Of Brent Hawkes} to the world. It is a great honor for us to be a part of an organization where all can belong regardless of previous or present beliefs! Pretty novel idea for a church. Through their music they get to spread this great message of hope and support and family to the world at the denominations international convention. The purpose of this e-mail is to ask the support of your organization to either donate to travel expenses or buy a ticket to our concert for either of March 19th or 20th at $25 each. The concert will be followed by a reception in the church hall. Ticket requests can either be made through Bill Kudla or at the Church. He will also be selling perennials and bulbs from a catalogue at the club as a fundraiser. A great gift for Mother's day!! Thank-you for whatever help you can give,

Why M2M Outreach Worker and not Women's or LGBTQ Outreach Worker?
- by Mark Hammann
Over the past months I've heard from community members questioning my job title as M2M (Man to Man) outreach worker. Some have expressed concern that my title excludes women, so I'd like to explain and also inform you on how you can help in bringing women's outreach to Durham.
My position is funded by the AIDS Bureau, a branch of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. They fund my work for Gay men, Bi men and MSM (men who have sex with men) outreach. In order to better reach the M2M community in Durham a major part of my work is to assist in building a stronger, active and more visible LGBTQ community. Part of that community building has been through our fund raising dances, LGBTQ Christian Church/HIV healing service and co-chairing the 'Communities Involved Committee', as a few examples. Also I work on education initiatives that often include the lesbian population, even though it is not specifically mandated under my funding guidelines.
I can fully understand how this may have caused confusion on what my role is; as well I am very concerned on how my title might cause some to feel excluded by it. Here at the AIDS Committee we work hard at preventing the exclusion of anyone. We have identified the real need for a woman's outreach worker here at the AIDS Committee.
Recently the provincial government announced new AIDS funding specifically to do prevention outreach to women across Ontario to address the alarming increase in infection rates in women aged 15 to 35 in this country, province and region. Eighteen AIDS Service organizations received funding for either a full time or part time Women's Community Outreach Worker. Here at the ACDR (AIDS Committee of Durham Region) we have seen an increase of 30% in women accessing our services over the last two years alone - meaning more women in the region are becoming positive and looking to us for help. Despite this alarming statistic, the Ministry of Health decided not to provide Durham region with any of these new funds. It is a poor decision in our opinion and our Executive Director and the Board of Directors are presently lobbying for this funding to be extended to ACDR as well.
Not content to sit and wait for the Government to step up to the plate, the agency will be looking for alternative funding sources and developing new fundraising initiatives to create the income needed to launch this obvious program gap in our prevention strategies. Later this year we will be asking the women's community to step up and help us form an Advisory Council to determine the most effective ways to spread the word to all women in Durham Region. In the mean time, if you'd like to support ACDR in lobbying the Government to extend funding, we can provide you with email and street addresses of the Minister and others at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Or you can simply write a letter of support addressed to our Executive Director, Adrian Betts asking why there is no dedicated prevention program for women in the Durham region. Adrian will use it in his own case for support with any and all potential funders including the Ministry in his search for female centric funding.
I hope this helps to explain my job title and I encourage you to support us in our efforts to broaden our outreach to the whole community.

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
March in the Garden Continuous bloom is every gardener's dream. With some planning it is definitely achievable.
1. Know in which months each perennial blooms.
2. Choose plants that bloom for at least 8 weeks for your core group of perennials.

The above list of plants, being very specific as to which named plant, are very hardy and reliable and perform well in our southern Ontario climate. It's a list of tough plants that perform.
When you shop at garden centres, red the labels. They give you the info you need, as to the length of bloom, when they bloom, size and hardiness. Southern Ontario is a Zone 5. So when purchasing plants, I always try to buy plants hardy to Zone 4 or less. That way I am pretty sure they will winter. However, with our gardens near the house and protected with fences and trees, it's okay to try many other plants also. Gardening is also a form of experimentation and stretching the limits as to what we can grow.
I just received a gardening plant catalogue that lists a hardy "Banana" tree for sale. I am not eager to purchase one, but some people will. Some people may have success with it and others will not. If you decide to grow something like this, plant it near the house and mulch it heavily for the winter. GOOD LUCK !!
So get planning and do not be afraid to experiment with your garden. Even in my own garden, I have had plants that did not do so well. When I moved them to a different location in the garden, they perked up and are doing well. Sometimes more sun or more shade can make all the difference. Till next time, Charlie |

Something to Say... - by Savanaugh
I have spoken of the comfortable "bubble" that many of us in the gay community have the luxury of being a part of. As members and patrons of Club 717, we have a very solid support system available to us at any given moment. When one of us experiences any difficulties, everyone is there to support. Despite any individual strive or bitter feuds between Queens, it is comforting to know that when chips are down, there is a huge community of support. As an educator in the community however, I've keenly aware of this luxury we have available to us. Every single day, I see the impact of hate and intolerance on our LGBTQ youth. It continues to be a daily struggle for many teenagers and the statistics are there to show it. A recent Ministry of Education document revealed that students are feeling more unsafe in our schools and community than even 10 years ago. Violence targeting our youth as not decreased, homophobic slurs in the halls has not decreased, the drop-out rate has not decreased and the suicide rate for our LGBYQ youth has not decreased. Despite (and possibly because of) our increased visibility in recent years, out youth continue to struggle. We can spew all the data and statistics that we like but I see the impact every single day as the young teenager approaches me in tears. Afraid to come out to family, afraid they will lose their friends and ashamed of what they suspect they might be. The internalized homophobia continues for our LGBTQ youth. A patron at the club recently told me that we have all been through hate and discrimination and that there was no support for us growing up. They proceeded to argue that it makes us stronger in the end. I was astounded by this narrow attitude. The whole "hard-knocks" attitude really frightens me. Why would we wish for the next generation the same that we had growing up? We have a huge gift to be offered to our LGBTQ youth and that gift is our experiences and support. It was with great pride that I had the wonderful opportunity to host the recent PFLAG fundraiser at Club 717. We were able to raise over $1,400.00 for an organization committed to assisting our LGBTQ youth. Through community groups, sharing meetings, dances, teen socials and a Pride Prom, our LGBTQ youth will have access to supports that were never available to us. This is true progress! I would like to express my sincerest of appreciation to everyone who was a part of this very successful event. The entire club and the patrons stepped up and provided a wonderful gift for our LGBTQ youth. A special thank you to all of the performers, Chardonnay and Donny who gave it 150%. My heart is truly full! There you have it....... Savanaugh had Something to Say !! |
Leather Folk... - by Mike Childerhose
Another month has passed us by and we will soon be into Spring and nicer weather.
There doesn't seem to be alot of interest in the Leather Scene around the Club these days, so I really don't have much to talk about this month. I have put some feelers out in past Newsletters with regard to the Leather Scene here in Durham Region but to no avail as I have not had any response to date! We have our next Men's Night coming up on Saturday, March 13th so gentlemen please come out and support this event, if you want them to continue. Spearhead in Toronto are celebrating their 40th Anniversary this year and will be holding their Anniversary Dinner at the Ramada Hotel on Jarvis Street. Anyone wanting more information on this event can be had by checking out their Website spearheadtoronto.ca or contacting by emailing me at the address below. If anyone has anything they would like to see in this column please let me know. So until next time play safe and be happy! Yours in Brotherhood, Mike Childerhose mike@club717.ca |
