'The Perfect Password'

A woman was helping her husband set up his computer, and at the appropriate point in the process, the computer advised him that he would now need to enter a password.
Something he will use to log on.

The husband was in a rather amorous mood and figured he would try for the shock effect to bring this to his wife's attention.
So, when the computer asked him to enter his password, he made it plainly obvious to his wife what he was entering by stating each letter out loud as he typed:

 P..E..N..I..S

His wife fell off her chair laughing when the computer replied:

**** PASSWORD REJECTED. NOT LONG ENOUGH***
POPCORNS BACK

You asked for it and your Board of Directors listened. However, keep in mind the only reason it was taken away is because some patrons were abusing it by throwing it around and creating messes.

 Kristin Parker - Mortgage Specialist
Hello Club 717,

Now more then ever, I have been approached with the questions 'what is happening with the mortgage rates?' and 'should I change my current mortgage and take advantage of the low rates?'

On January 19th 2010, the Bank of Canada conducted their first meeting of the year to discuss the key over night interest rate.  As promised, they maintained prime at the record low of .25% and reiterated their commitment (barring any unforeseen economic factors) to maintain this until June 2010. This means great savings continue for the current and new variable rate mortgage holders.  Fixed Rate mortgages are still at great low ranging from 3.89% to 3.99% (5 Year Fixed) with few rumors of a slight increase.

If you are one of these people that may be considering taking advantage of these low rates whether through purchasing, refinancing or transferring your mortgage, please consult your mortgage agent or myself to see if a change is right for you!

See you next month!

   a lesbian prospective
- by Diane Cassidy and Kim Etherington

Intimate Relationship Abuse & LBT Women

When you bring up the topic of Domestic Violence or Intimate Relationship Abuse (IRA), for some, the image of the out-of-control male, physically abusing his helpless female partner comes to mind.  Most people are shocked to learn that Intimate Relationship Abuse (IRA) exists at the same level in same-sex relationships as it does in heterosexual relationships.  When examining the topic in the context of same-sex relationships amongst women, there is an expectation that the incidence of abuse would be even less due to a number of myths and stereotypes that exist regarding intimate relationships amongst women.  This misconception has negatively influenced the attempts to increase awareness of IRA in same-sex couples.
One of the most prevalent myths that clouds ones understanding of IRA in Lesbian relationships, is the idea that women are NOT violent or abusive.  There is no denying that most women are at a disadvantage to men when it comes to physical strength, but this fact has nothing to do with if a woman is capable of being abusive.  The idea that ALL women are nurturing and supportive to one another is a myth.  IRA does exist in the LBT community and myths such as this one make it more difficult for women to recognize abuse and less likely they will seek support when faced with it.
Another myth that furthers a lack of understanding IRA in the LBT community is the belief that when a relationship is between two women, they are likely of equal physical strength, and therefore neither can hold power over the other.  This myth assumes the only way to hold power over another is through physical force. When violence and control are part of an intimate relationship, there is often a perpetrator and a victim.  It is a mistake to assume that a perpetrator is bigger and stronger.  This touches on the misconceptions of butch-femme roles in lesbian relationships.  The fact is that most lesbians do not assume explicitly butch-femme roles, and these roles do not automatically identify who has power in the relationship, or who has the desire to exert power over the other.  It is not true that the "butch" is the perpetrator and the "femme" is the victim.
Most women who experience abuse from a partner feel shameful about it. They often don't want their family or friends to know about it for fear of judgment.  For this reason the topic of IRA is not often discussed openly.  Additionally, for lesbian women they deal with the issue of IRA and the disclosure of their sexual orientation.  They must consider the greater impact of judgment for the sexual orientation, as well as being a victim of IRA.  It is no secret that homophobia and misogyny exist in our culture.  Women may fear that disclosure will lead to a more negative perceptions of the lesbian community, or further the chance of judgment and rejection from those they share this disclosure with.  Given the compounding issues lesbians face, it is understandably difficult to collect statistics and direct programs to LBT women dealing with IRA.
Intimate Relationship Abuse is a multi-dimensional term used to be inclusive of all intimate relationship, whether they are heterosexual or same-sex or whether the abuser is male or female.  This term applies to romantic relationships that exist under varying circumstances. Some include cohabitation, others do not.  Using the term Intimate Relationship Abuse ensures we consider the complexities of relationships and we do not perpetuate a narrow and limiting view of what abuse is.  Abuse can include sexual, emotional/psychological, economic and/or physical abuse.  Ultimately, abuse serves to establish dominance and control over another person.  When someone is living with an oppressive and controlling partner, it can make it difficult for them to even recognize what is considered abuse.   Below is a list of behaviours and actions that are considered abusive:
Emotional/Psychological Abuse:
" Yelling, insulting the partner, swearing at one's partner or calling names.
" Belittling or ridiculing the partner; berating partner in front of people.
" Forcing a partner to do humiliating or demeaning things, demanding obedience, ordering or treating partner like a servant and become angry when "chores" aren't done or done right.
" Acting jealous and suspicious of the partner's friends and social contacts.  Socially isolating a partner from friends, family and peers.  Putting down a partner's family and friends.  Monitoring a partner's time and whereabouts.  Checking cell phones, email and other records.  Not allowing a partner to leave the house.  Restricting the use of the phone or car.  Preventing the partner from attending school, work or socializing.  Preventing a partner from seeking medical care or other types of support.
" Using manipulation by refusing to talk or sulking.  Making decisions for a partner without consulting them.  Withholding affection.  Threatening to abandon a partner.  Refusing to do ones share in a relationship or care for children.
" Telling a partner they are crazy and irrational, turning people against them, blaming the partner for violent bahviour,
" Throwing things at walls, kicking furniture, punching holes in walls, breaking dishes, shaking finger at partner, making general threatening gestures.  Threatening to destroy partner's personal property and threats of harm.
" Trying to scare or intimidate a partner by driving dangerously, threatening the children or making threats of violence against family, friends and pets.
" Threatening to "out" a partner.
Sexual Abuse:
" Treats partner as a sexual object, insisting they dress more sexual, insisting partner strip.
" Insisting on sexual acts at a time when the partner is not interested, such as during sickness.
" Forcing sexual acts against partners will, forces sex with others, or forces partner to watch sex with others.
" Calling sexual names like "whore" or criticizing sexually, insisting partner is interested in others sexually.
" Sadistic sexual acts, forcing sex after violence, forces degrading and unwanted sexual acts.
" Any non-consensual or manipulated sexual contact.
Economical Abuse:
" Interfering with partner's work through harassing activities.
" Denying access to money or means of obtaining it.
" Forced dependence through refusing to allow a partner to work.
" Refusing to allow a partner to attend school.
" Withholding money.
" Preventing access to food, clothing, personal hygiene products, medication or shelter.
" Stealing assets or defrauding money.
" Requiring justification for any money spent.
" Destroying personal belongings.
" Threatening to "out" a partner in their workplace.
" Refusing to pay child or spousal support.
" Forbidding partner from having personal bank accounts.
" Negatively influencing the credit rating of a partner to gain dependence.
Physical Abuse:
" Spitting, slapping, scratching, pushing, shoving, grabbing.
" Arm twisting or bending, hair pulling, kicking, biting, hitting or punching.
" Throwing objects, slamming the partner against objects such as wall or floor.
" Dragging down stairs or from a height, forcing from a moving vehicle
" Cutting, scalding or burning.
" Holding down, restraining, trying up, locking in a room, closet or other enclosed space.
" Choking, strangling, beating up, smothering, threatening with a weapon

My Sister's Voice is a new charitable organization in Durham Region that recognizes the unique needs of the LBT community when addressing the issue of IRA.  My Sister's Voice provides mentoring, support, counselling and education services to women who have been marginalized by abuse, violence, poverty, hate crimes or sexual orientation. Services are provided to foster self-esteem and confidence and
are founded on the core values of equity, diversity, unity, and empowerment.
My Sister's Voice will be launching The Phoenix Project:  Supporting and Empowering LBT Women Experiencing Intimate Relationship Abuse (IRA).  The Phoenix Project consists of a number of components designed to both increase awareness of IRA in the LBT community and offer LBT women a place to seek support and counselling that is sensitive to their unique needs as LBT women.   Through this program, LBT women can access individual counselling, monthly support groups and referrals to other community agencies and partners.
The organization also facilitates a monthly Coming Out Group.  The group is a monthly support group that offers a safe place for women in various stages of "coming out".  The group provides a confidential place for discussion related to the many issues that women face when addressing their sexual orientation.
As part of My Sister's Voice fundraising efforts they have organized a benefit dance on Saturday, March 6th at the West Rouge Community Centre, 270 Rouge Hills Dr. in West Hill.  FLOW Dance (For the Love Of Women), will take place four times each year and is intended for Queer women and their supporters.  Tickets for the event are $15 in advance, $20 at the door or a VIP table of 8 can be purchased for $100.  You can purchase tickets in person at Sacred Quest, 118 John St. E. in Whitby, or you can order them by phone at 905-666-3010.
My Sister's Voice hopes to launch its first program in April 2010.  If you would like to get more information on the organization or help dealing with the Intimate Relationship Abuse you can contact My Sister's Voice at 905-668-5578.

Out in Durham - by Steve O'Connor

Out in Durham - by Steve O'Connor
It was my real pleasure & a very relaxing & enjoyable experience to interview & personally experience the expertise of Pierre Langlois, the owner of Pure Relaxation.

This business is located @ 1 Candlebrook Drive, Whitby, ON L1R 2V4. His phone # is 289 314-0400. The hours of operation are as follows: Mondays to Fridays 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. & Sundays 12 noon to 4 p.m. Please check out his website @ www.purerelaxation.ca for more details.
Pierre has a varied & interesting educational background including a Fine Arts B. A. from Ottawa University, an Environmental Design certificate from the Ontario College of Art Design in Toronto. He comes from a very visual background which certainly helps his clients @ Pure Relaxation.

Although presently working as a project manager in front end web design in Toronto for the past 10 years, Pierre is very interested in expanding & growing his Durham Region based Pure Relaxation business. Pierre has always been interested in gardening (he was a professional gardener for many years) & his experiences there assisted him in how to work with plants all year round which lead into his present involvement in aromatherapy. He obtained his certificate in aromatherapy in 2000 @ the Institute of Aromatherapy.
Pierre has a holistic practical approach that his various courses that interested him & help him to this day in his business Pure Relaxation. It should be noted too that prior to this Pierre was interested in spiritual healing & energy work & is a certified in Reiki.

Also, Pierre does various forms of massage & I can personally testify that his private room is very tranquil with soft music & totally relaxing. He immediately puts a person at ease & discusses with you in a gentle manner your concerns (maybe neck, shoulder back tension etc.) & has you fill out a simple 1 page form. He produces his own ALL natural aromatherapy products & does up a personal blend in front of you to assist you in your healing process. Pierre develops these oils/blends in his own kitchen & there are NO chemicals. I am sure many of our readers thought they may had to travel to Toronto to get such natural products & a total professional package of therapeutic treatments. Not so dear readers! Please consider giving Pierre a call & book an appointment with him. You will not be disappointed >> I guarantee that!!!

The rates for services are more than reasonable: for example a massage is $60 per hour (it is less intrusive & stressful for people & the benefits include circulation & detox of your body). For Ki Drop Therapy the price is $70 per treatment which last between 45 to 60 minutes. A Reiki session is $60 per hour & last between 1 to 1.5 hours depending on a clients needs & includes a light touch to key areas of the body. Slowing The HIV pandemic -
 Get Tested
Mark Hammann - Gay Men's Outreach worker - by Mark Hammann

There are over 60,000 Canadians who are infected with HIV and it is estimated that another 30% of Canadians who are infected don't even know that they are.  That 30% unknowingly aid in the spread of this pandemic.  Getting tested for HIV is important.  Knowing if you have been infected helps you get treatments that can control the virus, allowing the possibility of living a normal life span.   While HIV drugs aren't always easy to take and there can be side effects with various medications, the facts are that there are options around medications and many people living with HIV are doing so with minimal side effects.   Knowing ones HIV status also helps everyone by controlling the spread of this pandemic.

The only way to know if you have been infected is by getting an HIV anti-body test.  Don't think that you can tell by the way you feel or look, because it's not possible; only by testing can a person know for sure.
Here in Durham region we have three sexual health clinics where a person can get 'rapid point of care' HIV testing.   Those three clinics are:  Pickering - Pickering Town Centre on Tuesdays from 2-4pm or by appointment by calling 905-420-8781;  Port Perry - Phone: 905-985-4891 testing is on Wednesdays from 2-4pm or other times by appointment;  Oshawa - Oshawa Centre on Thursdays from 2-4pm or by appointment by calling 905-433-8901.   All three clinics offer anonymous HIV testing as well, but you have to request that your test be anonymous when you enter the clinic.   DO NOT hand over your health card if asked; instead inform the receptionist or nurse that you want anonymous testing.     This is important because if you give your health card and they swipe it, your test will not be anonymous!
Rapid point of care testing is fast, taking only about a minute to get results.   The nurse will prick your finger, much like if you are getting a blood sugar test.  He/she will get a few drops of blood which are then mixed with the test chemicals in the testing tray.  This test gives a 'reactive' or 'non-reactive' result which is 99.9% accurate.   If the test is 'reactive' you will then be given the standard HIV blood test.  This is done as a way of double checking the results.  Results from the standard test will take about two weeks.

So testing today is fast and easy and can be anonymous (if requested).  There are treatment options to lessen side effects and a person has a real possibly of living a normal life span.    So get tested on a regular basis.   We here at the AIDS Committee of Durham Region can help you learn about the risk factors for infection so you can know what level of risk you are comfortable with (visit www.aidsdurham.com or www.m2minfocentre.com  ).    Of course we always have free condoms too, just stop by or ask us about our partner distribution locations where you can pick them up.   As an individual you can help in slowing this pandemic by knowing your status, so get tested!

Got Plant Issues? - by CharlieGot Plant Issues - Email: newsletter@club717.ca and Charlie will get back to you !!

February  in  the  Garden

This month's nagging question is :  What does one do with a towering old fence that borders across the whole of the backyard?

Rather than trying to hide it or cover it up, why not turn it into a feature wall / fence.  After just returning from Mexico, I am truly inspired by colour, by garden art and scupture, garden furniture in wrought iron or heavy wood.

Yellow is a dominant colour in Mexico, being warm and bright. But terracotta, bright blue, red , orange and bright pink also come to mind.  I wouldn't paint the fence, but  I would consider staining it a colour, adding some wrought iron trellis or wooden latcice to the fence to grow some flowering vines on.  Clematis, honeysuckle, roses that climb, climbing hydrangea- all these vines need some support. Boston Ivy and Virginia Creeper are vines that could totally cover the fence in 3 or 4 years, and they require no support as they have tendrils that would adhere to the fence.  They also have nice fall colours, of reds and burgundys.  If you want to break up the space or expanse of the fence, you could plant columnar type trees  -- trees that grow tall, but are very narrow , such as columnar maples, columnar crab apple trees and a weeping red beech, which grows in smaller gardens too.  You could also plant a hedge along the back, but that does require some pruning and clipping a couple of times per season. Butterflies are attracted to pink, yellow , orange  and purple.

A couple of suggestions for tall grasses are:
Eulalia Grass - Miscanthus sinensis  grows up to 2.5 metres tall

Pampas Grass-  Cortaderia sellona  grows almost 2 metres too, but likes damp soil.

To keep going with the Mexican theme, colourful tiles are used quite a bit.  Tiling outdoors in Canada is a bit risky.  But colourful ceramic urns planted with summer annuals in hot colours could look very interesting.  To help complete the look, cushions in colourful striped fabrics. rope hammocks, rope chair seats, colourful scatter mats on the patio or one hung on the fence. These are just some genreral ideas. But if you add some margueritas and cruchy tortillas and a bit of salsa, you just might think you are sitting in a Mexican courtyard.

I am also including some plant names that would be suitable to plant in your Canadian garden, but remind me  of some plants in Mexico:

dwarf  spreading  yews
yuccas - remind me of agaves
dogwoods - remind me of ficus benjamina
rhododendrons-
big leaf cottoneasters- small leaves and red berries small scale sedges- grasslike plants with texture and colour upright oakleaf mountain ash- siberean peashrub schubert chokecherry succulent  sedums and sempervirens(hens and chicks) vinca- the annual flower- saw it growing wild in a cemetery. If you really must have palm trees, you'll have to purchase some large ones and plant them in the garden or in large decorative pots, but you will have to winter them indoors.

So I have supplied some ideas, although rather general and some information about plant choices.  Now it is the gardener in you, who needs to be inspired and take as much as you want or none at all, or do some more research to get to the end of your means.

If you have any questions about your garden style, plant choices or  some sort of garden dilemna, just let me know and I'll try to steer you in the right direction, or at least give you something to think about.

Till next time,

Charlie

Something to Say... Savanaugh - Something to Say - by Savanaugh

Stores are full of red velvet, heart-shaped boxes of candy, cutsie stuffed toys and hopelessly romantic trinkets.   Christmas crap barely away and out comes the red, pink and white isles bursting with cinnamon hearts (a little too close to Goldschlager for me and memories of hood-ornament impersonations on Glenda's car roof outside of the club), but I digress.

I'm sure you have figured out by now that I'm not a huge fan of the overly commercialized, forced sentimentality of many holidays.  Shouldn't Valentine's be every day of the year? Love is far too complicated to be summed up in a Hallmark card.  It is far too diverse from relationship to relationship to wrap it up in a neat little commercially palatable package.

On this Valentine's day, let me share with you a beautifully romantic poem I wrote for my hubbie a few years back:

          The silhouette of a torso...
                   Oh Beautiful man.
          A chiseled face freshly shaven...
                   Oh Beautiful man.
          Muscular buttocks glisten with sweat...
                   Oh Beautiful man.
Chest hairs patterned for fingers to touch...
                   Oh Beautiful man.
          Pouting lips parted to kiss...
                   Oh Beautiful man.
Stiffness, erect and ready to play...
                   Oh Beautiful man.

          Laundry done...
          Dishes clean...
          Vacuuming finished...
          Garbage out...
          Lunches made...
          Bathroom scrubbed...
          Car washed...
          Groceries away...
          Errands run...
          Bills have been paid...
                   Oh Beautiful man!!!!

Happy Valentine's Day to Everyone!

There you have it.......

Leather Folk... Mike Childerhose - by Mike Childerhose

THE LEATHER SCENE

Hello everyone,

Here we are at the end of January, where did it go?  In my January article I talked about Leather/Fetish at Club 717 and requested input from the membership on your feelings towards this seemingly touchy subject to some!

There were no comments on the Club 717 Website other than one female member requesting information and help in forming a BDM Fetish Group here in Durham Region.  I responded with no reply to date but am willing to sit down with anyone who may be interested in such a venue.  Please spread the word and let's see what kind of a response we get.  I can be reached at mike@club717.ca and I will certainly get back to you.

Our next Men's Night will be Saturday, March 13th so come out gentlemen and enjoy the evening.  We will be having door prizes, 50/50 draw and maybe some other surprises.  Please remember that you don't have to dress in leather as there is not a strict dress code!  We are also planning a Leather & Lace Fashion Show sometime in April for both male and female attendees.  We are currently seeking Toronto and Oshawa sponsors for this event and more on this will come later.

For those male members that are familiar with the Spearhead Leather/Denim Club in Toronto, their Fantasy Ball is coming up in February and you can check this out on their Website or by contacting me.  It's a great evening and worth attending.

Until next time play safe and be happy.

Yours in Brotherhood,
Mike Childerhose

Reel World... Reel World - by Kevan - by Kevan

It would appear that director James Cameron has repeated the same feat he accomplished with 'Titanic' - he has created a film that has brought huge numbers of people back to movie theatres in droves, driving huge amounts of cash into an industry that sorely needed it in the face of home DVD and Blu-ray sales, movie piracy and illegal downloading.

While I will admit I have yet to see this technological marvel, I can't help but wondering as Tinseltown starts to load up 'Avatar' with awards and allocades.....I have heard such amazing reports of the special effects, the imagery, the impact of the film in 3D;  my question is....what about the acting?

Let's face it, the actors in a James Cameron film are not there to be the stars of a film, but are there to be window dressing for the special effects as they make us all go 'oooooh' in the dark.  We didn't really care that much about Leo and Kate on that boat once it started to sink, and we pretty much forgot about Arnold's laughable acting once his skin got ripped off and we saw the robot underneath.  It just seems sad that this movie appears destined to scoop all the major awards this year just because of a good combination of computer imagery and astronomical box office.

So what films would I suggest need to be taken more seriously?  Personally, I go to the movies to see actors, not special effects (if that were what I was interested in, I would be a video game junkie, not a movie junkie).  Here are just a few examples of movies this year where the performance of the actors is key:

-          Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Saphire
-          The Blind Side
-          It's Complicated
-          The Informant!
-          Julie & Julia (now available on DVD)
-          Up in the Air
-          A Single Man

I am sure I will enjoy 'Avatar' when I do see it - I just hope I leave the theatre being able to remember one great line of dialogue or one great performance that was not generated by a computer.

Take care,
Kevan
