New Year Prayer for the Elderly:
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, The good fortune to run into the ones that I do, And the eyesight to tell the difference
New Year's Day Prayer for one and all
Dear Lord So far this year I've done well. I haven't gossiped, I haven't lost my temper, I haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I'm very thankful for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed, and from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help. Amen |

Presidents Message
Happy New Year to one and all !!!
Hello Members and Patrons. Well the Holidays have pretty well come to an end. I want to start by Thanking everyone who gave to the food and toy drive, and personally want to thank everyone who donated clothing, toys and money to the charities that Club 717 agreed to support this year. Candice, I love you, and the willingness you show to lend your support, and your ability to make things happen. Donny you are amazingly talented at decorating and to all those who helped with the decorating Thank You, Mike, Hardy, Steve O, Charlie, Larry, Pat, Kelly, Jason, Ryan, Aaron, Kelly, Jay, Cathy, Amanda, Farra, Trish and Kristen, John, Candice and George. The Club looks great thanks to all of you. This has to be one of our record years for donations at this time of year and that is due to the efforts of the Queen and King of the Club, along with all the performers that came out and put on not one but two amazing shows for free to raise money for these charities. I know this will take a lot of space, but I am thanking them each individually, so be patient. Candice, Benn, Farra, Colin, Catherine, Nikki, Clynt, Teren, Divine, Ivy, Kevin, Justin Rockhard, Carlotta, Justin Easton, Brie, along with Queen Mum Ruby, Chardonnay, Edna, Lauren, Glenda, Ineeda, Kristy, Donna and Chalaine. Thank you all for coming out to entertain our members / patrons and for giving your time, talent and tips to support the charities of choice for the Club. You all are awesome and beautiful people. You raised in excess of $3,500.00 plus hundreds of dollars in food, toys and clothing. I applaud you all!!! I also want to thank all the staff, Board members and Performers who donated gift baskets to be raffled off, the same as we do every year. Special Thanks to Garrett for getting Farra to do Anne Murray to bring in an extra $100 and to John Labarge for topping up the funds raised by $250 to total $2,500 the first night. Christmas is a time of giving. It is important for a community such as ours to be part of that sharing. Society does have it's share of those that are not as fortunate as some of us, be it our own community or any other. When you are blessed with a warm home and food in your belly and the love of family and friends, that is really enough, but when you can spare a little to help brighten someone else's day, that little bit puts a smile on a face that cannot be taken away. That in itself is a deed done well. I would rather see a smile then have excessive items in my home. No child should ever have to go without, but if they do, they should not lack love, and that does not have to come from their own family, if there are others out there who can help. That is truly what this season is all about, the spirit of giving, We are fortunate to have double incomes and in a lot of cases, no children to lavish with our incomes. We should be willing to share at this time, and it gives me pleasure to donate my time, my help and cash. That is my Christmas present to myself, knowing that I have helped someone along the way. Savanaugh said it best in the last Newsletter.
I will report on the New Year's Eve celebrations in the next newsletter. All I can say at this point is I know it was well planned out. Lastly, I want to Thank Ed for all the work he has done along with Antoine in getting our new Web Site up and running. The end result is exactly what we were looking for. Ed, great job and thank you for finding people to back us and sponsor all the various aspects of the website. You have spent months on this and I do realize your efforts even though I don't always say it, I thank you sincerely. Well with a New Year, we have a lot of planning to do, and there will also soon be a General Members meeting on January 31st at 2:00 PM.
Please remember to renew your memberships, they are due by the end of January, if you want the renewal price of $40.00. Otherwise you will have to pay the same as a new member, which is $50.00. Memberships are also available on the web site. For your convenience, you can pay via PayPal, Visa or Mastercard in Canadian funds. Click on Membership and you'll see the link for Renewals or New Membership. Thank you all for your continued support. Danny

| Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin
I hope that everyone's holidays were fun and filled with cheer...
For some, January brings the dreaded visit to the mailbox where the visa bill awaits with reminders of money spent buying gifts, enjoying time with friends and family and sometimes bringing to light the reality of their financial situation.
One of the solutions to this problem is using the equity in your home to wipe out debt. While some may be weary of tapping into the mortgage free portion of their properties this is a great way consolidate multiple credit lines into one low interest payment. While credit cards range in rates from 19% to 28% our current low mortgage rate environment could allow you to be paying just 3.89% which could be saving you $100, $200 or even $300 dollars a month! Please feel free to call me at 1-866-480-0711 to learn more or for a no obligation consultation.
See you next month!

a lesbian prospective - by Diane Cassidy and Kim Etherington
First Article January 2010 Ed recently asked myself and my wife if we would be interested in writing an article for Club 717 Newsletters. We are thrilled to bring a lesbian prospective to the newsletter. Kim and I lead a very complex and diverse life, therefore our articles will probably be quite diverse. This first article appeared in our Store SACRED QUEST's newsletter. We hope you enjoy our first article. Self love and Acceptance When I ask people to increase their awareness of negative and judgment thoughts toward themself, they are often shocked at how prevalent these negative thoughts are. The first step in changing this is to make a commitment to observe your thoughts through journal writing or some other tool that helps you record and process the day's events. Once you have a good picture of what type of judgments and negative thoughts you have toward yourself, you can take steps to neutralize the damage done and reverse your thinking to a more positive and self-loving approach. The first thing you may notice about your negative thoughts is they are distorted and disproportionate. An example of this is ALL or NOTHING thinking. This is when you make statements like "I am so stupid, I ALWAYS screw things up." This is obviously a false statement for anyone. I have never met a person who ALWAYS screws things up. We tend to take our bad feelings and amplify them and this leads to ALL or NOTHING statements that have a very hopeless essence. Essentially, people can come up with hundreds of reasons to think badly about themselves, and we could do an entire article on that process. I think it would serve us all better to focus on the ways we can shift our negative thinking and self-loathing attitude to a more nurturing and self-loving approach. Below is a list of activities and concept that can help you improve how you think about self. 1. Start the day with a Deservability Treatment. You can go online and download Louise L. Hay's treatment. Take a read of it and then re-write it in words you would use in every day language. Read it to yourself every morning while looking into your own eyes in the mirror. 2. Surround yourself with affirmations and images that reflect the things you WANT to believe about yourself. Always use language that is in the now and positive. So you would never use the affirmation "I am not stupid" you would use "I am a capable and brilliant individual". 3. Keep a positive aspect book. This is like a journal, but only the positive things goes into it. Each day write all the things you feel good about with regards to self. Some people like to include a gratitude list. 4. Be aware of your environment and the people in it. We often choose friends that reflect our negative beliefs back to us. Make sure you choose friends that appreciate the best of you. Surround yourself with loving people 5. Make a list of 50 things you love about yourself. 6. Use the pre-sleep affirmation "I love and accept myself" every night before you sleep and as close to sleep as possible. Say it at least 10 times for the rest of your life. 7. Take time for yourself. There is no better way to convince yourself you are worthy than to take time to do things for yourself. Put yourself at the top of your to-do list. We have so many books on the topic of self-esteem and self-love that we couldn't possibly mention them all. Below is a list of a few: You Can Heal Your Life, Louise L. Hay Love Yourself, Heal Your Life, Louise L. Hay Ten Days to Self-Esteem, David Burns Heal Your Wounds & Find Your True Self, Lise Bourbeau What is Your Self-Worth, Cheryl Saban You can get these books at Sacred Quest. 118 John Street East, Whtiby Ont L1N 2T3.
Love yourself, you are worth it !

Happy New Year Everyone,
Hope you all had a wonderful and magical Holiday Season...Last month was crazy at the club with so many wonderful events, shows and fundraisers...
The month started off with "The Toronto Invasion Show" and I was honored to have so many of my close friends and fellow entertainers at the club, to help raise money for our Christmas Charities....that was just the beginning of our fundraising efforts, and all month so many of you came out and gave of your time, effort and money to such worthwhile causes.....So Thank You!! Thank you for your belief in the spirit of Christmas, and that everyone, even those less fortunate deserve a holiday to remember. In my heart I know we have all made a difference!!
I'd like to take a line or two to thank my friend Mr. George Palmer, who so graciously donated his time in creating our "Toy Tree", and "The Celebration Tree." I think they both looked wonderful and added a little more magic to our home away from home...I truly hope the traditons we have started this year will continue for years to come and each one of you will share things and traditions to make the holidays special and meaningful to you!
As I write this, Im getting ready to go to the Christmas Potluck Dinner, not only is my mouth watering at the thought of all the wonderful food, but Im excited to get to know you all!! A chance to meet and chat with the members and share in some Christmas Cheer!!
I want to wish you all the happiest of New Years, full of the greatest things that life can bring, love, happiness, joy and most importantly friendship...
Your friend and Queen, Candice

REEL WORLD - by Kevan
LET ME TELL YOU WHY 'NINE' DOESN'T SUCK!
So, one of the films I have been looking forward to this winter is 'NINE', Rob Marshall's film adaptation of the 1982 musical which won 5 Tony awards, including Best Musical. I got the chance to see it on Boxing Day, with my husband and his kids sitting alongside me in the local AMC.
They hated it - I thought it was pretty good.
Note I said pretty good, not great. Marshall remains fairly true to the source material (a famous 1960's Italian film director has a creative block, and all the women in his life converge on him), which in some ways may be the biggest problem. You see, this is a true example of a book musical, where the songs come out of nowhere and are meant to either advance the plot or examine the state of mind of the characters. Film audiences these days tend to be more receptive to plot devices that move the songs to a different, more literal space - for example, in 'Chicago', the bulk of the musical numbers take place in Roxie Hart's imagination; in 'Dreamgirls', most of the performances are actual stage performances by people involved in show business. And then of course there was 'Evita', which was essentially one brilliant long-form music video for Madonna.
The last example we really had of a book musical on film was 'Rent', which I also find most people either really like, or really hate. But 'Rent' had the advantage of also having a rock score, which appealed to more people than I think the music of 'NINE' will.
That being said, there are several strong performances in 'NINE' that deserve mention. While I am not a fan of her popular music, Fergie absolutely kills her number 'Be Italian', which she performs completely in character as an Italian prostitute - I can just see all the drag performers at the club fighting over this one. Marion Cotillard has a wonderfully reflective song called 'My Husband Makes Movies' and surprisingly, Kate Hudson presents us with a fun, upbeat delivery of her song 'Cinema Italiano'. Oddly enough, the one song I was very familiar with, 'Unusual Way' is a complete letdown as performed by Nicole Kidman. One can only imagine what would have happened if Marshall's original choice, Catherine Zeta-Jones, had agreed to play the part of director's muse.
In short, this movie will be well received by fans of traditional movie musicals - if you can stomach the classics like 'An American in Paris', 'South Pacific', or 'Okalahoma', you will be fine. If you find these films dated and unrealistic, better stick to the big budget features like 'Avatar' and 'Sherlock Holmes'.
Happy viewing and Happy New Year,
Kevan,

Change: Working and Thriving with the Inevitable - by Mark Hammann
Change is an inevitable fact of life. Without change there would be no civil rights laws or gay marriages in Canada today, as a couple of examples. While change can help us to grow and flourish, society and individuals often resist it. We often resist change because we do not know what it will bring and we are relatively comfortable with the current status quo, whatever that might be. It is only when we become knowledgeable about the change that we can see the good in it. 2009 saw many changes, as does most years. The AIDS Committee of Durham Region experienced changes in staff and a new Executive Director, Adrian Betts joined the team. A PHA (Person with HIV/AIDS) himself Adrian has a wealth of experience working in the HIV/AIDS movement and he is also a resident of Durham. We said goodbye to the Masonic Hall and began a partnership with Club 717 as the new home for our monthly fund raising dances. We witnessed a 30% increase in new clients last year while working on ways to slow this increase within our community by adding Youth and African-Caribbean outreach workers. Gay Men's/MSM Outreach continued to grow and change to meet the needs of the community. To let you know what I've been doing for change I created what I believe to be an exciting and visually appealing new website - www.m2minfocentre.com which provides over 26 pages of information and videos for Gay, Bi and MSM (men who have sex with men but do not necessarily identify as Gay or Bi). M2M is an umbrella term which includes Gay, Bi and MSM. The M2M information centre site along with www.dazeindurham.com which features M2M links and LGBTQ Community events pages are drawing men to them. I have personally witnessed some exciting change this past year with MSM. By placing cards to promote the M2M sites behind Gay and Bi DVD's at Forbidden Pleasures on Simcoe Street North, those cards have lead MSM/M2M to the websites and even to our office. Some want to know about 'coming out' and others are looking for more information on risk factors, HIV/STI testing and how to protect themselves, their spouses, partners and families. I believe that connecting with MSM is very important. MSM who do not identify as Gay or Bi often are forced by various reasons to live a secret life. Because of this they often have limited access to accurate sexual health information. The websites and the cards leading them to the sites are having an impact. Web tracking software shows there are men spending not just a few minutes on these sites, but sometimes hours. After doing a presentation recently where I talked a bit about this topic I was approached by a man who took some of the website promotional cards along with my business card. This man had tears in his eyes and while he never directly said that he was MSM (and most likely had a spouse and possibly a family as well), I sensed that he was. These contacts reinforce the importance of the work I do and the positive change one individual can make in another's life. Witnessing uplifting change like this goes beyond what words can ever accurately describe. Change can be very important! If you would like to assist in changing lives and help empower people, please contact me as I am always looking for volunteers to help get these cards out and into new locations so we reach more and more men. Another uplifting change this past year was the creation of an 'open and affirming' Christian church service. This was one of the needs that we had been hearing from the LGBTQ community. St. George's Memorial located at Athol and Centre streets graciously offered their beautiful small chapel. The services are held at 6pm on the fourth Sunday of the month. Included in the service is a healing service for HIV/AIDS, a brief prayer and blessing are offered to those who wish to come forward. Doug Willoughby is serving as Pastor. So what changes lie ahead for 2010? I am sure that there will be many and here are a few of which I am aware. I've been working on a public service announcement (PSA) to expand awareness of the AIDS Committee across Durham. A very talented local writer who has also had some experience in producing, editing and directing has been greatly helping me with it's production, volunteering his time as well. The PSA is a change from our past forms of outreach. We hope to have a demo version available to the public via our website by the end of December 2009. In 2010 we will be taking the demo to local television stations to see if we can get a more 'polished' version produced by them in partnership with the AIDS Committee and using local Durham landmarks as a back drops. This PSA titled "Empower Us All" is based upon the "Empowered and HIVFree" campaign that rolled out over the summer and features 15 local actors. This PSA should help our agency to attain more exposure throughout the LGBTQ, MSM and general community, which is greatly needed. Another change is with our fund raising dances. The first dance of the 2010 season will be held on Saturday February 6th at Club 717. The change is the addition of a benefit concert. Sharon Judd, known as Velvet Hammer will give a 'live' performance at 9:30pm, and then dancing starts at 10:30pm. The tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Advance tickets will be available at Club 717 and at the AIDS Committee of Durham Region. Plans are to have additional benefit concerts by various performers periodically during the 2010 season. Sharon will also be selling her CD and donating half of the proceeds to the AIDS Committee. You can watch one of Sharon's music videos by going to: http://durhambulletinboard.yolasite.com. This change will hopefully be a positive addition to our fund raising dances. The funds from these dances/concerts benefit the LGBTQ community in programs and services that help in building, as well as serving the local LGBTQ community. So I invite you to come out and help to make a positive change in your community by attending and supporting these fund raisers, while having an evening of fun and socializing. Another change that will greatly improve our community is the Gay Call Centre, a first for Durham. This call centre is being developed by Communities Involved (of which the AIDS Committee is a member), the Community Development Council of Durham and the Durham Distress Centre. The plan is to have the call centre up and running by the summer. Resources will be compiled for the call centre and there is a plan for some type of 'hate crime' reporting system, so there can be a documented list of hate crimes in the region. This information will be useful in educating government officials, the police and other community players who can make change that will ultimately lead to making Durham a better place for everyone to live in. I am looking forward to all the great changes the New Year will bring to our community and I hope you are too. Let's all be the change that is needed in Durham by stepping up in whatever way each of us is capable, sharing our talents and maybe even learning some new skills that will make our lives better. Change is inevitable and can be a good thing. If you're interested in helping please contact me at MSM@aidsdurham.com or call 905-576-1445 and I will let you know what is going on and how you can get involved. Then you can make a favourable change in your life and in the life of our community.

Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! If you are still one of those people who have a real tree, rather than just discard to the side of the road. You can chop it up and place those branches, over some tender shrubs or perennials in the garden where they will collect more snow. Thus giving those plants more winter protection. When spring arrives you can further cut those branches finer. To use as mulch in the garden.
January is the month to scour those gardening magazines, catalogues and books. This may inspire you to try some new plants or new plant arrangements or begin to plan a renovation in the garden. Once you make the commitment, you can then further research the idea so that you can put your plan in place when the time comes.
This year we are extending our 7 by 8 foot deck. To add on a 9 by 10 foot addition. So I need to figure out how many deck blocks, how many 4 by 4 supports and how many decking and extra railings I will need.
Our front porch is also in need of a new floor. So I need to look at the materials needed to replace that. I am toying with the idea of plastic wood for the front. But I need to do more research. I know the cost is about triple the money.
We are off to Mexico for a week in January and maybe I'll have some plant info ideas to share with you when I get back. TILL NEXT TIME, CHARLIE |

Something to Say... - by Savanaugh
Hangovers are done, credit cards bills coming in, the time of year for new beginnings! Forget those New Year's Resolutions. I'm hoping none of you bothered to commit to another resolution this year. In a state of drunken stooper, it is easy enough to give up the smokes and booze and pledge a daily visit to the gym. Be real folks... it is just an arbitrary date of the year. Instead, take the new beginnings as a fresh slate. Not to make promises you can't keep but to seriously evaluate what is truly important for you. Instead of making unrealistic goals for yourself, spend the time to really reflect on what you really want out of life. Time, I've had plenty of. A recent back injury has put me off work and forced me to sit still on a sofa for weeks on end. All who know Savanaugh, knows she doesn't "sit still" very well. It has actually been a blessing in disguise. If I wasn't prepared to slow down and stop over-achieving, my body was going to make it happen. If had weeks on end to reflect on what is really important and have come to a rather self-indulgent conclusion. I am most important in my life. It may sound overly self-indulgent and full of ego, but let me assure you that it is not. I have come to the conclusion that while I was constantly doing things for other people, it was in spite of myself. The disease of "not saying no" and believing that "only I can do the job" has resulted in being over-committed and over-extended. All of the committees, extra-curriculars, working more than one job, performing, being super-mom... has taken its toll. In the end, everyone suffers. So, it is not a New Year's Resolution, but rather a life commitment. It is truly time for ME! It may seem self-indulgent but in reality it is the greatest gift I can give to my family and friends. If I'm not healthy, I'm of no service to others. I extend the same invite to all of those over-achievers amongst us all. You know who you are my friends... take the time for yourself. Dig deep and figure out what is really important. It is time for you to make the conscious decision to truly be self-indulgent. When you are centred and healthy, you make a much better family member and friend! There you have it....... Savanaugh had Something to Say !! |
Leather Folk... - by Mike Childerhose
I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and all the best for 2010! My article for the January Newsletter will be different than most months and not talking about the Leather Lifestyle but deal with the subject of what "some people" are afraid of when we mention the word "Leather or Fetish Night"?
There seems to be a real hang-up around Club 717 when we use the term Leather/Fetish at our Men's Nights and I don't understand. I have even been told that it offends some clientele. We do have a Leather/Fetish community out here in Durham Region and having these nights lets those who like to wear this attire come out and be themselves or anyone they wish to be. That's not saying that everyone in attendance is requested to dress in this manner as we all own denim and T-Shirts. We may not be into designer clothing but we certainly have fun! I am going to keep this short, but I would certainly like some feedback on this subject and you can email me at mike@club717.ca with your comments, suggestions, criticisms or anything else you would like to talk about on this subject.
We are trying to support all facets of our gay community here and not just those wearing high heels! Until next time play safe and be happy. Yours in Brotherhood, Mike Childerhose mike@club717.ca |
