B.A.R.E. Restraints Corp. is a Canadian company that manufactures Erotic Leather, Pleather, PVC Fetish and Club wear plus accessories.  Our products range from the novice to the experienced, petite to plus sizes. Our company is making a name for itself in Canada by having plus sizes in our standard stock. Custom work is available.

I have been manufacturing leatherwear for about 8 years.  I noticed in the community the lack of leatherwear for larger people. So I have started to make a name for my company in carrying larger sizes off the rack at reasonable prices. Over time I have found that we are starting to sell more pleather, which looks like leather but it more affordable and is machine washable and dryable, than leather.  PVC is also popular.  What we make in leather can also be made in pleather or PVC, which is good for those who have issues when wearing leather.

We sell across Canada, U.S.A. and over seas.

A Message from the King - by Benn Dover King of Club 717 - Benn Dover

WOW!  My first article as King!  It is an absolute honour to be the first King crowned at Club 717 and I promise to work hard to make you all proud.

First off I want to congratulate all the competitors.  It was a great competition and I had a blast with you all!  Alot of work went into the competition and you all deserve a huge round of applause!!  I am looking forward to working with our new Queen Candice.  It is shaping up to be an exciting year.  I know I will learn alot from you My Lady as well as our new Queen Mum Ruby!  Love ya' both!!!

This is going to be an exciting year.  Christmas is always a busy season at the Club with decorating, planning for New Years and our Open Show.  It's been especially busy for me with the Club 717's Got Talent Competition, the King/Queen Competition and if that wasn't enough, someone decided to plan a Commitment Ceremony in there too!  What was I thinking!?!  If I haven't thanked you for your help and support, I thank you all now!  I/we couldn't have done any of this without the support of our friends and family.

It is shaping up to be a fantastic year and I am excited to be working with Queen Candice.  She has so many wonderful ideas to make this the best year yet!  Shows are planned, ideas floating around and we have had a ton of support from everyone.  Thank You all so much!!

I won't ramble on......... this time.  There is so much to be done to get ready for the Christmas Season. Don't forget your non perishable food donations and new unwrapped toys!  We will have  baskets to raffle off  again this year donated by the performers.  Make a donation and get your tickets!!  It only takes a minute to help out those in the community less fortunate than we are.

We have an amazing year ahead of us and have hit the ground running!
Merry Christmas to all!  Cya round the Club!!

Till next time,

Benn Dover
King of Club 717

Out in Durham - by Steve O'Connor Out in Durham - Steve O'Connor

I had the pleasant experience of interviewing Diane Cassidy, the owner/operator of: SACRED QUEST. Diane runs this business with her married partner Kim Etherington.

Sacred Quest is located at 118 John Street East, Whitby, ON L1N 2T3. Look for the "Little Purple House" just off Brock St. North above Dundas Street in Whitby.
The phone # is: 905 666-3010.  Business hours are as follows:
Mondays through Thursdays 11 am. to 7 p.m.; Fridays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. & Sundays 12 noon to 5 p.m. The email address is: sacredquest@rogers.com  The website can be found at www.sacredquest.ca

Sacred Quest has been open for 2.5 years. Sacred Quest is a spiritual book & gift store & wellness spa that provides resources & products to assist individuals on their journey of personal & spiritual growth. The store was created to support Diane's practice (both as a registered nurse & a psychotherapist). Diane started this business for her clients to buy books etc. to help them on their personal journey of self awareness. Items available for sale include books, CD's, DVD's, crystals, candles, essential oils, jewelry, native products, incense, ritual tools, sacred art, chakra chimes, instruments, affirmation cards & plaques, etc. Also, there is a small PRIDE section which Diane would be willing to expand if there was the demand.

Diane feels her store is very unique in Durham Region. There is a relaxing & peaceful feeling as soon as one walks in the door. Customers describe it as "comforting".

Diane & Kim run many workshops out of the store (basement level) & a lot of them are free. For example: the law of attraction, connecting to your spirit guide, etc.

They have spa services which focus on body healing (both body & mind). This is NOT your typical spa experience where one gets their nails done!

Sacred Quest have gift certificates available (for that "special" someone or that hard to buy person). A good idea at this time of the year. Also, they offer a gift registry so you can drop by & choose a gift or 2  & then advise your family or friends of where to shop for items you would like.

*** If you know a gay or gay friendly business in Durham Region that might be interested in being featured in an upcoming newsletter kindly have them contact me at: cottageguy@rogers.com or membership@club717.ca

It is hard to believe that December is already here. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you & your loved ones a very Merry Christmas & a Safe, Healthy & Happy New Year.  SEASONS' GREETINGS EVERYONE!

Until next month......

Entertainment Report - by Jason Entertainment Director - Jason

Hey Folks,

That time of the month again, and I just wanted to say "hello".

We have a busy month planned for you, which includes a couple of holiday fundraisers. We have the Toronto Invasion show on December 4th, 2009. Also, we have Candice with, Billie, Clynt Licker and Lauren Lovelace on the stage December 11th. The show on December 18th will be hosted by Candice and Benn Dover, and is an open show, which means anyone could be in it. This is also part of the holiday fundraiser. So the shows this month are going to be a blast!

I would like to welcome Benn Dover and Candice as Club 717's new raining King and Queen for the 2009/2010 year!

Also, I would like to do some "thank-yous" for all the help I've been getting from people. We wouldn't have been able to pull off some of the events in November if it wasn't for the help of some people: Danny, Donny, Kelly, Ruby, Edna, John, Ed, and Bianca! Thanks guys for all your help with the decorating and taking down of the decorations!!

That being said, November 30, December 1st, and 2nd, during the night from 6-10, we will be setting up the Holiday decorations, and need some help for this. I am bringing it over the three nights so that way everyone who can help can find some time during those three days! We hope to see as many people there as possible. Please email me at entertainment@club717.ca if you have any questions, or can help out with anything this holiday season.

We have started setting up the baskets for the food and toy drive raffle system. Bring in an unwrapped toy, or a non-perishable food item, and get a ticket to enter the draw. The rule this year will be only one ticket per person per night for each batch of donations, not one ticket per item, sorry guys.

This year, we're going to be doing a few things differently, we are going to have a tree up for the toys to go in, and also, we're going to be selling some tags to celebrate the holidays. The tags will be $2.00 each, and will be placed on the celebration tree above the bar.

If you have any ideas for events that you think might fly at Club 717, email them to me. No ideas are stupid. Can't wait to see what you guys throw at me?

Until next month folks,

Jason A.

Making Cents, Make Sense - by Kristin Mortgage Specialist - Kristin Parker

Greetings fellow 717 readers!!

I would like to start by thanking Ed and the 717 crew for inviting me to write this column...
This time of year brings us to the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, family diners, reuniting with old friends and everyone's favorite... the Christmas Bonus... while many of us might be tempted to buy ourselves something special like a nice trip to the Bahamas to sip on Margarita's and Mia Tai's, others may be more conservative and transfer it to an RRSP... Why not use this to get yourself closer to being mortgage free? Many of the mortgage products out there offer pre-payment privileges; one of these privileges allows you to make annual lump sum payments to your mortgage without penalty.... The extra benefit of this? It goes purely to the principle balance making an impact on the amount of time it will take to pay it off.  Please feel free to contact me to learn more...
Seasons Greetings and best wishes to you and yours for much love and success in the New Year!

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie Got Plant Issues - by Charlie

December in the garden and around the house.

Can you believe that it is almost Christmas ?? For all you crafty nature lovers and gardeners, now is the time to raid your garden so you can make some wreaths, garlands or just pump up some of your annual planters with winter branches.

You Need:

A selection of evergreen branches, twigs with red or yellow colour, dogwoods crab apples, cottoneater berries, rose hips, sumac flowers or whatever else your garden has to offer.

For wreaths and garlands it is good to use florist wire, available at Michael's craft store. It comes on a spool and is very thin and pliable. You start by making small bundles of branches wired together. Then you start to join the bundles together to create a rope. This rope or garland can be made to the length required. One 9 foot rope can be formed into a circle to create a wreath. And you thought that you weren't creative. Just add some of your Christmas decorations and ribbons or bows and you have your very own personal decoration.

If you have left out your large planters which are now looking very tired or dead. You can remove the dead plant material and place your branches from the garden into the pot or urn. Tall in the middle and shorter ones around the edge. A mix of different materials proved to be more interesting. Again you can add lights or decorations, bows etc.

There are some people who let their planters just freeze in the winter as they are not prepared to winter all those plants indoors. Because of size or the space and the demand. I wouldn't save everything, but those tropical shrubs or small trees that you purchased can be saved. The small annuals, I would just discard. Dig the tropical shrub or tree out of the large container. This is a form of root pruning. Shake off excess soil, and you should see some of the roots. Now you can select a pot that these roots will fit into.

If you planted from a 6 or 8 inch pot there is a good change that it may go into a pot one size larger. A 6 to an 8 or an 8 to a 10. Now that you have root pruned, you also must top prune. If the top of this plant grew to a 3 foot ball and you are planting into an 8 to 10 inch ball. Now it becomes a plant that you can carry and you may even have some room to overwinter it.

A friend of mine had an oleander that sat in her driveway each summer. It was 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide. I asked her what she did with it in the winter. She tied up the branches and with the help of her two daughters. They dragged it into the attached garage, where it stayed on its side till spring. Then they dragged it out again in the spring. Then she parked in the drive way all winter because there was no room in the garage. So I suggested that she prune this oleander back severely, to make it more manageable. She said she didn't have the heart to do it. So she still parks in the driveway each winter and continues to complain about the size of the plant. To each their own !!

That's all I have to say til next year. If you have any questions, please forward them to newsletter@club717.ca and Ed will give them to me. And we'll get you fixed up with some info.

So have a safe and Merry Christmas and a very Jolly New Year.

Charlie

P.S. if you are thinking about gardening books as Christmas gifts, I strongly recommend that you get ones with lots of coloured pictures. A picture can replace 1,000 words.... Ho!!, Ho!!, Ho!!

A very Merry Christmas to you and yours and a prosperous New Year!

I am ending my column on Leather Folk and hope that you have enjoyed it!  If you would like more information on this book it is called Leather Folk and edited by Mark Thompson. My December article will be on the Hanky Codes used by gay men in leather bars.

The Hanky Code

More of a leather thing, this silent way for gay men to communicate has been around for decades now.  Although its popularity has diminished, by placing a certain colour bandana in one's back pocket, he tells the gay world how he likes it and with whom.  It is a system that could only work with gay men, for it takes a special type of male of differentiate between robin's egg and light blue in a dimly lit bar.

For the most part, the left side equals Dominant and the right side equals Submissive.  The same placement works for nipple rings and keys on chains.

Something to Say - by Savanaugh Something to Say - Savanaugh

Decorations galore, jingle bells ringing, sparkling tinsel and twinkling lights...here we go again for another turn at the Christmas Season.  I enter this time of year with very mixed feelings.  Anyone who has been to our home, knows the festivities are in full swing.  Three Christmas trees, countless villages and every nook of the house sparkles.  A Christmas Grinch I am not... I absolutely adore the holiday season.
It does always come with mixed feeling however.  Lets face it, the holidays are a time of extreme excess and waste.  How many needless empty calories will be consume, how many pieces of wrap and paper will we all toss Christmas morning.  How many extra sweaters, slippers, pieces of trinkets , perfume, electronics do we really need?  Every single year, I wake up Christmas morning with the sense of excitement as I watch it threw my children's eyes but also a sense of extreme sadness knowing how many in our community are not having the same experience.
It is easy for us to pass by a Salvation Army stand and toss in a $5.00 bill without seeing the faces at the receiving end.  It is just as easy for us to wake up Christmas morning and begin our day of excess without once thinking about the reality for so many others.  I on the other-hand have been cursed with an inability to do so.  Every single Christmas morning I become overwhelmed with sadness and yes, gratitude.  Gratitude for all that I have and am able to provide for my family.  Sadness, knowing that children in our very city have woken to nothing.  This year is going to be worse. The economy has hit hard and it is always the innocent who will suffer.   Think about the messages we sent to our children throughout the year.  If they are good enough, Santa will bring them everything that they want.  Well, there are a lot of children this year, who will internalize how terrible they must have been when they get a lot less than had hoped.  These kids will then return to school to find their friends received the IPod, and newest fashion label.
I think of the parents who  find themselves working far harder than I will ever have to and earn significantly less.  Parents who love their children as much as I love my own and who would do anything to put something under the tree for them.  The credit card companies will take full advantage and every parent who can't face their children Christmas morning, will max out their cards.  The cycle continues.
I have come to terms with balancing my own excitement for the season and the terrible guilt I often feel on Christmas morning.  We can't save the world, but we can make a difference with just one child.  I have been committed to making Christmas happen for another family in our community for years now.  It is not charity at all... in fact, probably one of the most selfish acts I can think of.  Through helping one other family through the Christmas season, I can ease my own guilt and enjoy Christmas day with my own family.  It is a win/win!
So please, if you are going to struggle through the holidays, don't ever consider it charity to accept help.  If you are one of the fortunate few who have more than you will ever need, may you be able to relief your own guilt and have yourself a wonderful holiday season.

There you have it...

Reel World - by KevanKevan's Top 5 Christmas Movies

5) The House Without a Christmas Tree
This is the newest of the films on my list - a TV movie from 1972.  Starring Jason Robards, Mildred Natwick and Lisa Lucas, the story focuses on the relationship between a girl and her father - she wants a Christmas tree more than anything, and he has never permitted one in the house since the death of his wife.  The film is very low-budget, shot on videotape, but the performances are very engaging and the themes of family, forgiveness and the concept of 'charity' are clear and timeless.  Available on DVD from some online sources, I have never seen it in a store.

4) White Christmas
A 1954 musical/comedy that served primarily as a showcase for the music and songs of Irving Berlin, this film was nonetheless the top moneymaker of the year it was released by almost four million dollars.  Great performances by Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen.  The musical numbers were choreographed by Bob Fosse, although he receives no screen credit.

3) The Bishop's Wife
This 1947 drama features Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven in a tale of the struggles of a bishop to maintain a balance between his work and his family, and the angel that appears to help him through such difficulties during one particular Christmas season.  The film's primary themes are selflessness and belief in oneself and one's principles when faced with challenges.  The film was re-made in 1996 as "The Preacher's Wife", starring Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston and Courtney B. Vance.

2) Miracle on 34th Street
Also presented in 1947, this drama tells the story of a Macy's store Santa Claus who believes he is the real thing, and the effect he has on the lives of those around him.  Stellar performances by Maureen O'Hara, Edmund Gwenn and Natalie Wood.  The film was shot on location in New York City, using the real Macy's store, as well as the real Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade of the previous year.  Gwenn won the Oscar for his performance as Kris Kringle, and the film is now readily available on DVD with a great commentary by actress O'Hara.

1) A Christmas Carol
Though there have been many, many versions of the classic Dickens tale made over the years, the definitive version remains the 1951 version starring Alastair Sim as Ebeneezer Scrooge.  Originally released as 'Scrooge' in Great Britain, it has now become a holiday classic.  While this version remains the quintessential version for live action, much fun can also be had with the current theatrical release of "A Christmas Carol" shown in Disney 3D and starring Jim Carrey, as well as the 1992 musical feature 'The Muppet Christmas Carol.
