"From the DJ Booth" -
by DJ Gryphyn
Well folks,
Thanksgiving has come and gone. Halloween is coming as I write this. A lot of events have been happening at the club over the past few months and more to come. I have been super busy planning out tunes for the nights I'm on and it's a blast! I've been seeing a lot more requests which is fantastic! We like requests at Club 717 because it helps us to know what you want to hear. Some of the top requests I've gotten on Friday nights are:
David Guetta ft Akon - Sexy Bitch/Chick Madonna - Celebration Mariah Carey - Obsessed Sean Kingston - Fire Burning
Those are just off the top of my head. I get people sometimes ask "Why didn't you play (insert song name) that I requested?" Well folks, on a busy night I get about 50 -75 requests. That amount of requests would fill up the entire night, not only that but some songs we don't have, and or it doesn't fit in with the music that's playing that night. BUT! I play what I can, and if we don't have it, I try to either play something similar or get it for the next time I'm on. The number one request mentioned above for example we don't have at the club YET. However, I got it and will have it from now on when I spin. Never fear, your DJ is here!
See you at the Club! DJ Gryphyn

Starting October 22nd, we will be hosting a sharing night in our community for anyone who wishes to come out and share their "Coming Out" experience. We will also be inviting Allies such as parents, friends and siblings to chat about their personal stories. HIV Travel Ban ...
President Barack Obama is expected Friday to announce an end to the HIV Travel and Immigration Ban during a signing ceremony for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act scheduled for 11:50 a.m., according to a source at an agency that works closely with the Administration.
"My understanding was that this would be announced the same day as the Ryan White Act was signed into law," said the source, who spoke to The Advocate on the condition of anonymity. "The White House wanted to be out in front on this." The ban, first implemented in 1987 and codified into law by Congress in 1993, prevented non-U.S. citizens who were HIV-positive from traveling or immigrating to the United States unless the Department of Homeland Security granted them a waiver. Congress passed the policy reversal last summer under the leadership of Sens. John Kerry (D-MA) and Gordon Smith (D-OR) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA); former President George W. Bush signed it into law, but the Administration was unable to finalize the change before his term ended. The new regulation eliminates any travel and immigration restrictions that are tied to a person's HIV status. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) put the wheels of change in motion in late June by publishing the proposed regulation to the federal register, which triggered a 45-day public comment period. HHS has now sent the final change to the Office of Management and Budget for approval, but the source said HHS would not be able to fully implement the new regulation for another 60 days following the president's announcement.
In the intervening months, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has directed its officers to place holds on any decisions regarding green card applications that are based solely on an individual's HIV status pending full implementation of the new rule. Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of the LGBT lobby group Immigration Equality, welcomed the announcement. "At long last, people living with HIV will no longer be pointlessly barred from this country," Tiven said. "Every day, Immigration Equality hears from individuals and families who have been separated because of the ban, with no benefit to the public health. Now, those families can be reunited."
Enactment of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act will fund critical HIV/AIDS treatment and some prevention programs through 2013 at about $2.5 billion annually, representing a 5% increase for all sections of the act. The program helps about 500,000 mostly low-income and uninsured people living with AIDS/HIV per year, according to the Government Accountability Office.
The Ryan White CARE Act, named after an Indiana teenager who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion in 1984, was originally passed in 1990 and has since been extended three times. Greetings!
Happy November....... :) I'm sorry for the delay in getting this one out on time. I had a few extra hurdles to deal with.
In case you missed it on Wednesday, the weekly events eblast advised about our new website under development. I've included it again in this newsletter below to recap what's going on with the Club website. If you received an email from the old website company disregard it, as it is completely false and unjustified.

From the President
I would like to thank all the members who attended the AGM. There was a great turn out. Our auditor, Rick Chapell was present and gave the financial report. We are in excellent financial condition, and are operating in a positive manner.
I have been re-elected as President and am happy to represent you. There are a number of things that I want to continue to do to both better the Club and our Community. I would like to welcome the three new board members, as well as the six returning board members.
October has flown by, and we had many successful events. We had a great Men's Leather Night with Mr. Toronto Leather being present. The monthly AIDS Committee Fundraiser dance was also successful, and then we had Kelly and Amanda's commitment ceremony. Our Halloween dance was one of the best yet! We also had great Friday night show's and a good Karaoke turn out. And, of course, Club 717's Got Talent had become a REAL hit on Sunday nights. Thanks to all that helped make these events go off so well.
November has the King/Queen Competition, the AIDS Committee Fundraiser dance, Ladies Night, and the finale of Club 717's Got Talent. The Christmas season is fast approaching, as well as New Year's Eve. Decorating will be done in the last half of the month.
Memberships for 2010 will be available soon and with a 25% increase over 2008. I'm sure we can better that number next year.
Our new Club Web Site is well under way and should be ready in by the end of the month. I had a sneak peak and It looks incredible! Once you see it, you'll understand why we out grew our old provider.
Well that's it for now! See you all at the Club! Bye for Now! Danny danny@club717.ca |
Queen Ruby's Report
Hi Everybody,
I can not believe that my year as Queen at Club 717 is coming to an end. I will be handing over the reigns to the next winners on Saturday November 7th. Please come out and cheer on the next King and Queen of Club 717.
You always hear that the current Queen is ready and waiting to step aside, but thinking over the year it does bring on a little sadness. I have had a great year with a few hip-cups but when does everything go smoothly all the time. Now that my year as Queen draws to an end, I look forward to becoming the new Queen Mum on Friday November 6th.
A little advice to the next reigning King and Queen. Work close with the Board of Directors and attend as many meetings as possible can so you know what is expected of you and what budgets they are planning for the shows. Let them know what needs you both have in order to present a proper show by giving your input.
Over the last year, I have had great help from a few friends so I hope I did not miss anybody when I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. To a great Queen Mum Madge, who was there whenever I need her advice and performance. To my drag Mom Edna for all the support and shows that she helped out with over the year. Savanaugh what can I say, when I can came up with a idea for a big show, she would take it and run with it to make it fabulous production. To all the other performers (Benn Dover, Billie, Tommi) who worked beside me to give great shows and special productions. To Donny for DJ'ing all special shows and decorating, I could not have done it without you. To Ed and John thank you for all the help when I needed your support. Not to forget my partner Ralph, who put up with all my flirting while in Drag and his help carrying my bags into the club. He not only put up with me but was always looking for jewelry and dresses to make me a better Queen for the club (LUV YA).
Well I better go before I start getting all choked up and stain the screen (with tears). So enough running off from the mouth. I will be at the club on Friday's so come over slap my tits and say Hi!!!!!!

Grr8 Finds Markets
I would like to thank last month's featured business owner Jim Bond from My Kawartha Gardener for referring this month's featured business to me. Thanks Jim!
Grr8 Finds Markets
27-29 Colborne Street
P.O. Box # 1242
Fenelon Falls, ON, K0M 1N0
Phone # 1 705 887-Grr8 (4778)
It was a fun & entertaining interview conducted on a sidewalk table with owner/operator Randy Meredith. Randy spent his earlier years in Oshawa & after moving around he came back to Oshawa. Randy comes by his love of antiques through his parents who owned & operated an antique store for 10 years (from 1992 to 2002) in Lorneville, ON which is near Woodville > close to Lindsay ON. His working with antiques & his love of old & beautiful things naturally grew.
Randy has 21+ years of experience in retail management in various locations across Canada including clothing stores, household goods & design.
At Grr8 Find Markets Randy has 50 spots out of 2 stores on the main street in Fenelon Falls leased out to various vendors from as far away places as Hamilton, North Bay to Belleville in addition to lots of local people. He prefers to have consignments & has 150 of them as he can make more $$$ off them & that is why all business exist is to make $$$.
In addition, he has liquidated 10 local estates which is a high number for a small community. Store # 1 opened on Feb. 27th, 2009 followed by the opening of store # 2 on May 2nd, 2009. They are next door to each other. Randy redid the interior, created the window displays & layout & designed the selling booths in Store # 1. He said that Store # 2 was a bit easier for doing the layout for vendors. Store # 1 was all booked in just 4 short days & Store #2 had all spaces filled prior to opening. He presently has 63 vendors on a waiting list for spaces in his shops. Vendors pay a fee based on the area space plus 15% of their sales. For consignments the cost is just 20% of their sales. Randy has the cheapest rates in the area, thus his long waiting list for vendors wishing to sell their items.
Pricing of items when I toured both stores is more than reasonable, the selection is varied & is always changing. You can find that unique gift for that "hard" to buy family member or friend for the upcoming Christmas season. Further if you are looking for a particular gift that is presently not in Randy's 2 stores he keeps a want list for customers & he will advise you when said item(s) arrive & hold them for you >> now that is great service!
His stores hours are as follows: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 7 days per week from May 1st to December 31st. Starting on January 1st until April 30th Grr8 Finds Markets will be closed on Mondays & Tuesdays only but open late from 6 until 8 p.m. on both Thursdays & Fridays. Including himself, Randy has 6 employees.
To find more information on Grr8 Finds Markets there are a few places you can check out:
I would like to thank Randy for his time & friendly personality throughout this interview. He was a supporter of Club 717 when he resided in Oshawa & it is nice to see that people follow their dreams & become their own business owners & "bosses"! Fenelon Falls is a lovely & short drive north east of Durham Region & be sure to tell Randy or his staff you read about his stores in Club 717's Novemeber 2009 e newsletter.
Well that makes it 2 months in a row that the Featured Business was a bit Out of Durham so please if you are reading this & do know of a business or service to our local community that would like to be featured kindly have them contact me @ cottageguy@rogers.comThe month of November is a time of Remembrance & reflection. I fondly remember those dear family members & friends no longer with us plus of course the veterans of the many conflicts (wars) in the past & the ones still happening today. Take a moment out of your busy day & reflect on the sacrifices of the veterans who fought for our freedom of democracy & many rights we enjoy in this great country of Canada. Buy a poppy & wear it with Pride! If you see a vet be sure to thank him or her too!
Until next month.....

Last month, two couples in our community lost close family members.
Early in October, our Belgium German Shepard, Axel developed problems standing, and progressively got worse with an aggressive infection. After several visits to the vets, and massive intravenous fluids and antibiotics, we realized he was not going to recover. We brought him home for the Thanksgiving weekend and then on Tuesday October 13th drove him to the vet, where he was relieved of his suffering at the age of 16 and a half. He was creamated the next day.
On Friday October 23rd, John and Danny's beloved Misha suddenly suffered a number of seizsures in relation to her heart condition which she bravely fought. She was relieved of her suffering also, just 8 days before her 14th birthday. She was creamated on October 26th.
To those of you who have pets, or have had pets, they are indeed a member of your family. It is such a strange feeling to walk into the house and expect to see them there with their tails wagging in unconditional love.
We all know that both Axel and Misha are in a better place, where there is no suffering. Knowing that, helps us to go on each day.
Thanks to all of you for your cards, emails and warm words of condolence. They were appreciated very much!
Sincerely, Ed & John, John & Danny
A wagging tail, adoring eyes, barking at the door, playful tugging, frequent naps, toys strewn across the floor.
With little snorts and playful barks you made your presence known and, knowing you were always there, We never felt alone.
You loved it when we scratched your ears, We swear it made you smile. We could never stay angry with you, We couldn't if we tried.
The barking at the door has ceased, no wagging tail to greet us, just memories of a special friend and good times are all we see.
Although we miss you dearly, We'll try our best not to feel so blue, because we know that there's a heaven for special dogs like the both of you. |

Club 717 King & Queen Competition
This years King & Queen Competiton is sure to be one for the record books !! Here's what our contestants wanted to tell you about themselves !!
We have Lauren Lovelace & Candice running for Queen and Billie & Benn Dover running for King of Club 717.
Billie - Drag King Contestant
I have been coming to Club 717 for 9yrs now. A friend by the name of Donnie lol came up to me one night asking me to enter this new talent contest after much debating that night of the fun that would come and deciding a name. 2 friends and myself were having some chats by the coat check and the next thing you know Billie Lixalot was born. Billie dropped his lastname and became just Billie and 8 1/2 yrs later I still enjoy every minute of it. I am 34yrs, originally from Port Hope currently living in Oshawa.
Lauren Lovelace - Drag Queen Contestant
I am running for Queen # 14 and the reason why I'm going for my second reign this year is because I left my hometown of St. John's NF 14 years ago this year. Being a previous Queen of Club 717 meant allot to me when I moved here and it's only fitting that I run again this my 14th year here. Being the Queen of Club 717 is allot of work and allows you to meet allot of people in the community. Their is allot of great people here in our community and allot of helpful people as well. I have been a member of Club 717 since May of 1996. I am a very outgoing person and have no problem talking to anyone and helping people when needed. I was the Queen of Club 717 in 2005 - 2006 and had a great year. I had alot of help from the Board of Directors at that time. Dean was or president back then and I was also a member of the Board of Directors. Thank you to all of you that supported me durring my reign (2005-2006) and I'd really love the honor of being your Queen for 2009 - 2010.
Benn Dover - Drag King Contestant
"Benn Dover" came to be on a dare back in April of 2008. I entered the New talent Competition and to my surprise, I won. That was it for me. I had the "Drag Bug" and was asked to do a show with Madge. From that point on, Benn was here to stay. To compensate for my lack of "dance" skills, I picked up an assistant along the way. "Little Benn" has been known to "Pop Up" from under a kilt or show up in a box every now and then. The past year and a half has been an amazing ride, and I look forward to entertaining at Club 717 again this year! It is truly and honour to be in the running for position of the first King of Club 717 and if I am fortunate enough to fill the position of King, I promise to work hard with the new Queen, Queen Mom Ruby and Entertainment Director to make this a year to remember. Thanks to everyone for all your support, especially my number one fan Amanda. Best of luck to the other contestants! It is going to be an amazing competition!!!
Candice - Drag Queen Contestant
Hi there just a note about me. I have been a drag artist for that last 21 years. Some of the highlights in my drag career have been an Empress 3 times in Toronto, funraised across Canada and the states, been a guest on the Jerry Springer, Camila Scott and Dr. Joy Brown show. I was also in the movie "Soldiers Girl" and the tv series "Queer as Folk". Now I stand before you proudly at the age of 52 looking to travel a new road in my drag career. It would be my honour and privilage to represent all of you and become your new Queen.
Yours Truly,
Candice

Hey Folks,
I wasn't really sure what to say at first. But I have been doing some thinking and figured out a little blub to say :)
I would like to thank everyone who has made my new yearly competition "Club 717's Got Talent!" a success. A very special thanks to Savanaugh for hosting this event, and helping me as much as possible whenever I need a thought, she's there with 100 different ideas and suggestions. Also, all the permanent judges, Bianca, and Farra N. Hyte as well as all the guest judges. As of this week, week six, we're down to the bottom four, Ivy, Edna, Benn Dover, and Ineeda Tips! What a huge improvement they've made over the last six weeks. Come out and see what we have in store for them in the upcoming six weeks. I hope everyone has seen at least one episode of "Glee", but that's the only spoiler anyone is getting until it's revealed to everyone else.
We have a busy, busy, month planned out for you in November. One being Queen Ruby's Step Down, and moving onto her role as Queen Mum, This will be commencing on November 6th followed by another big one, the King and Queen competition on November 7th. Our entrees this year for Queen are: Lauren Lovelace, and Candice. King contestants this year will be: Billie and Benn Dover. This is the first year ever that Club 717 is going to have a King AND a Queen, cheer your contestants on! The judges for this event will be, Donna, Savanaugh, Antoine from Inspired Media/Pink Pages and me, Jason. Come out to see this epic event go down in history! Remember space is limited though... so come early.
I guess that's it for now folks, I hope November is good to you, come out on Sunday's this month and see the last half of "Club 717's Got Talent" and I'll see you at the club, or if not, talk to you all again next month!! Until next month everyone, Jason A. Entertainment Director

TAKING A STAND (2009) of the Community Development Council Durham is an inter-active pilot project designed to help organizations and community groups in working towards becoming a leader in the promotion of inclusion and equity for all diverse communities throughout our region. The project is intended to support agencies in planning for a diversity and equity change process to improve organizational operations and program/service delivery. On October 14th, approximately 20 agencies took part in a training program that provided a set of tools to identify several initial priority areas for action, and resources to support continual reflection and change. TAKING A STAND is not a one-off training event, whereby participants learn the most recent 'tricks-of-the-trade' or the latest information on the topic. This initiative is designed to spark organizational change process within local agencies. On November 25th, participants will re-join to discuss their plans to date, the opportunities and challenges for organizational change, and next steps. CDCD is planning on offering this opportunity on a yearly basis, and looking for ways to provide in-depth support in making our communities welcoming and inclusive for all.

TO ALL YOU CLUB 717 GARDENERS:
Fall clean up and fall chores are ongoing, so if you refer to last month's article, it has some tips on what I think you should be doing in your garden. Because I wrote that last month I feel compelled to talk about something a litter different. So here goes.....
A CHECKLIST OF BASIC TOOLS THAT GARDENERS NEED:
SHOVEL SPADING FORK LEAF RAKE BOW RAKE LEATHER GARDEN GLOVES PRUNING SHEARS TROWEL SPRAYER WHEELBARROW
Most experienced gardeners will have three times this may tools. This list gives you the basic idea of the tools that you need to take care of a home landscape.
FALL CARE FOR HAND TOOLS:
Check handles for cracks and chips. Sand shipped handles and rub tung oil into the wood to make it smooth again. If handles are broken or cracked, replace them.
Clean off mud, this is something that you should always do before putting a tool away. It prevents rust spots. Clean the metal with a piece of burlap, steel wool, a wire brush or dip into a bucket of sand to scour the metal clean.
Sharpen your tools, if you put away a tool that is dull, it will be dull when you go to use it in the spring. Oil your tools. Coat metal tools with a light coat of oil and hang the tools in a dry place to protect them from rust.
One thing that I did not mention last month was the hilling of roses. If you have some tender or not so hardy roses you can protect them through the winter by hilling them with at least one foot of soil or compost after we have had some good frost, when winter has actually arrived. In the spring as it starts to get warm you must unhill them or they may perish due to the heat. The soil in the spring may smother them. Usually early April is a good time to unhill roses.
In my garden, I still have 4 or 5 roses in bloom. I don't hill roses because if it takes that much work to have the plant, then I do not want it.....
But I do love roses, so I have hardy shrub roses and those miniature roses. You know the ones you can by at the local grocery stores as pot plants. They are actually really hardy and will bloom off and on though out the whole season. I still have three in bloom right now at the end of October. If we don't get a hard frost, I may have roses at Christmas Time.
Now that it is Halloween, there is still stuff to do in the garden, but winter is fast approaching. So get ready to assess your garden for it's winter show and finish off those garden tasks before the snow flies.
Till next time,
CHARLIE

"LeatherFolk" - by Mike Childerhose
Leather Folk Continued!
The Inner Experience Leatherfolk is divided into four sections: "This Leather Tribe" is a group of essays by men and women within the leather community (and, in one case, a sympathetic observer of it) who are revising the political, peronal, and psychological meanings of radical sexuality. The fact that the words radical and sexuality are linked here at all is indicative of the expansive thinking and redefenition-the new tribalism-now taking place among leatherfolk. The next section is composed of recollections of the past. Each essay is situated in a particular decade, from the 1940s on, and through very private windows these writers provide unique views of an emerging subculture. The historic arc they trace is remarkably telling, reflecting not only the progress of individual lives but the continuity of eras. The third part, "The Body Becomes Politic," is a forum for the issues and divergent points of view that leatherfolk are dealing with today. Intolerance from other gay people, conflicts within the leather lifestyle, and the concerns of a community in flux are addressed here. Leatherfolk concludes with the writings of those who have found spiritual significance in radical sexual practice. Christian, pagan, New Age, and Native American beliefs are presented; so-called S/M ritual here is seen as an act of faith, a doorway into the inner mysteries. The idea that radical sexuality has spiritual value is a difficult one for most people to grasp. Many leatherfolk reject the thought as well, confusing spirituality with religiosity and its condemning institutions. Few, however, would dismiss the transcendent moments they've experienced through intense sexual ritual. For leather play is also about permitting ecstacy to enter our lives. The enhanced physical, visual, and aural sensations of redical sex ritual allow for a transportation of self, or awareness of self, beyond normal everyday reference. Leatherfolk often speak about vivid out-of-mind-and-body experiences. As they know, surrender is one of the most important and necessary elements of their play-a surrender of fear, inhibition, and ego to some deeper, unrecognized state within. Ecstatic revelation: This, by any other name, is spiritual. The visionary gay playwrite Robert Chesley makes this clear in one his works. The scene is a small room off Folsom Street at dawn, and Chesley's character is standing by an open window, naked and greasy, contemplative in the early morning light: "Another day. Another day back in the 'real world,' as I suppose you would insist it is. Well, you insist, and I'll fist-and take a fist, too: because I know there's another world. I've been there. And I've taken other guys there, too. And it's realer and more important to me than your world. That's all. It's a greater reality...
"I left my body for a while a few hours ago. Call it a waking dream if you want. You can discount it; I don't. I floated above myself, right up to the ceiling, and I looked down on everything that was happening: and it was beautiful. It was men making love so intensely and so courageously that all the barriers were down, and a connection existed above and beyond the boundaries of time, the boundaries of life and death...there's a greater truth in visions."
The voices and visions in this book help expose that truth. Leatherfolk and th public spectacle we create progress debate and the understanding about sex roles, power, and the meanings of faith. For us, S/M has been the means to ignite the sacred fire that burns deep within every man and woman. Because of this, and through a willingness to contest and cross boundaries of many kinds, leatherfolk are among the avatars of the new. But this is not a place to discuss the future. For now, there are many stories to be boldly told. There are many knots of betraying guilt and self-doubt to untie. And it is to these vital tasks, above all, that Leatherfolk is devoted. Until next time, please play safe and be happy. Yours In Brotherhood Mike Childerhose I would like to acknowledge the book "Leatherfolk" for providing this information. |
Something to Say...
Wow, what a month it has been! Hosting the Club 717's Got Talent has been one of the best experiences I've had as a performer. To watch the growth in each performer as the competition has progressed has been wonderful. To watch the crowds grow on a Sunday night has been wonderful. Finally, to get the opportunity to work closely with Jason, Farra and Candice has also been an amazing experience. Kudo's to Jason for setting up the competition and getting it off and running. I would also like to thank Jason for extending the invite for me to host. It has been one of the more challenging things I have done at the club, but also one of the best experiences to date.
The opportunity to perform in two step-down shows this month is also a wonderful experience. Thank you to both Madge and Ruby for asking me to be in their step-downs. It is truly an honour and I congratulate both of you on your amazing reigns as Queen Mother and Queen of the Club. Your contributions over the past year have been amazing. I think back on all of the major productions we have put on the stage in awe and pride. The "Any Once Upon A Time" original production was a first for the club. Our Mamma Mia was one of the best shows ever to be put on stage. You have both been true leaders and risk-takers and on behalf of the club - I would like to personally thank each of you!
Continuing on with the excitement of this month, our King/Queen competition is fast approaching. I am humbled and honoured to have been asked to participate as a judge. Naming our first ever King of the Club is very exciting. To have a King and Queen will only add to the history of the Club. I wish all those who are running the best of luck. May the top performers on that night win!
Whoever is to become our new King and Queen, I would like to be the first to congratulate and offer my assistance for the upcoming year. Anything either of you need... ask away! All the best!
There ya have it... Savanaugh had something to say! |

With the advent of autumn, and the changing of the leaves, the true cinephile turns his attention to something so great, he often feels dwarfed by it's magnitude.....that's right folks, it's award season again! To help you all through the ever growing number of award ceremonies we will be subjected to this winter, I have prepared the following cheat sheet of quick facts and figures for your reference.....
The Golden Globe Awards Date: January 17, 2010 Host: Ricky Gervais, star of British sitcoms 'The Office' and 'Extras' Who is Honored? Awards are given in the fields of Television and Motion Pictures, divided into categories of Drama and Musical/Comedy Awards Given by: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association - essentially a bunch of foreign journalists who are assigned to cover the entertainment industry by their employers Importance: Often the first major awards given during the official awards season, and often seen as the strongest indicator of who will be nominated for the Oscar - Oscar voters have almost 3 weeks after these awards to send in their completed ballot Reason to watch: The awards take place after an official banquet and cocktail party - which makes for sometimes interesting if slightly drunken acceptance speeches by the winners The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards) Date: January 23, 2010 Host: TBA Who is Honored? Awards are given in Acting categories only for Motion Pictures and Television. The awards are unique in that, rather than offer a Best Film or Best Series award, the top award is given for the cast as a whole. The SAG awards also award stunt men and women for their work in film and TV Awards Given by: The Screen Actors Guild, which is the union that represents actors in Hollywood Importance: Since the awards are nominated and voted on by actors themselves, the results of the SAG awards often predict the winners of the Oscars in the acting categories Reason to Watch: Chance to see some performers who will never get within 10 feet of an Oscar or Golden Globe Independent Spirit Awards Date: March 5, 2010 Host: TBA Who is Honored: Awards are given for Film, Screenplay and Acting categories, but also feature awards for First Feature Film and First Screenplay, plus a special award given to the best film made for less than $500,000. Awards Given by: Film Independent, a non-profit organization; a special nominating committee is formed to assess the suitability of all films submitted for consideration Importance: Where most awards are viewed as being won by money, the Spirit Awards are viewed as being won by the heart of a film Reason to Watch: Chance to see a Hollywood awards show take place in a giant tent! Only broadcast on the Independent Film Channel (IFC) Golden Raspberry Awards (the Razzies) Date: March 6, 2010 Host: Who cares? Who is...uh, Honored? Awards are given for Worst Film, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, etc. Awards Given by: The Golden Raspberry Awards Foundation - you can become a voting member on their website for just $25.00 US! Importance: Usually a signal as to whose career is in the toilet. Famous deserving winners have included Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Rob Schneider and Jenny McCarthy Reason to Watch: Not televised, but often footage often shows up on YouTube or on their website Academy Awards (the Oscars) Date: March 7, 2010 Host: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin Who is Honored? Most major branches of the Hollywood film community, although there is still no Oscar for Stunt work or Choreography in a movie musical Awards Given by: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Peer voting determines the nominations (ie actors vote for actors, directors for directors, etc), and then full membership votes on the final awards. All voting members may submit nominations for Best Picture Importance: The awards are great, but what really matters is who you are wearing on the red carpet! Reason to Watch: Club 717 has an AWESOME Oscar party - great food, games and prizes - be sure to be there
Best Regards,
Kevan
