Orange  ...............Orange

Finally  the teacher gave them all HONEY  lifesavers. None of the  children could identify the  taste.
The  teacher said, 'I will give you all a clue. It's  what your mother may  sometimes call your father.'
One little  girl looked up in horror, spit her lifesaver out  and yelled, 'Oh my God! They're  ass-holes!'
The  teacher had to leave the  room!

October's jammed full of activities. Special thank you to Jason for all of his hard work at the  "Club 717's Got Talent" events! To mix things up a bit, our judging panel has seen a change. Club favorite Farra N Hyte has joined the team. Come on down and don't miss the excitement. Bar hours on Sunday's are now 7pm - 11pm.

On October 10th, Men's Night is back. This month come down and see Mr. Leather Toronto, Peter Dillon, as he lends his support for the fundraiser. This month's Men's charity is "Denise House" of Durham. A shelter for abused and battered women. Tons of prizes courtesy of: Stag Shop Toronto, Shoppers Drug Mart & Goodhandy's. Our Media Sponsor is: Pink Pages Directory & Inspired Media. They did a wonderful job on the poster !! Thanks Antoine !! Last, but not least, we have some wonderful items in the silent auction courtesy of Mike Childerhose and a special ;) video prize giveaway. Lots of door prizes and a 50/50 cash draw. Hope to see you there !!

October is also the time of year to be Thankful for all we've received. So make sure you say "Thank You" to our current Board of Directors for all their hard work. Make sure you mark your calendars for October 25th is the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Please come down and lend your support and vote to those you feel will best serve the club for the next year. It's your chance to direct the directors !! and make a difference in the clubs future.

Savanaugha has written a great article below. Finally, a girl with balls enough to come out and say it how it is!! Far to often this is a taboo subject. We should be thankful as she explains below. Thank you to those that do go out of their way to show their appreciation, and you know who you are !!

The AIDS Committee of Durham Region has started hosting their monthly dances at the Club. Please show your support for an amazing community program and attend their dance on October 17th. Food, snacks, prizes are provided. All that's missing is you !!

Thanks everyone and have a great month !!!

From the President Danny - President of Club 717

Well wholly, October Already!!

Time is flying this year, I cannot believe it is already October. Having been off work since the spring you would think I would be bored to death. I would have thought that, but I have been so busy. I have not been bored yet.

Here we are already at Annual General Meeting time again. Don't forget to come out and support those that you would like to see on the Board. The finances are off to the accountant for the audit and then we are ready to go. This has been a hectic year and we went through some difficult periods this year, but all is getting back to order now.

A couple of changes that recently occurred are Jason took over the role of Entertainment Director. Congratulations Jason, you are doing a fantastic job at this. Jason has come up with things to fill the dates right up until the end of November. He has taken the ball and ran with it full steam. Kudos to you Jason for a job well done!
Bob has taken over the position of Staffing in August, and has been doing a good job with this as well.  We have unfortunately had a few people go and a couple of new people have come on staff. As well, a few of us that have not been working for a while have returned to pick up some slack.

You may or may not have noticed that we have put a few new lights up around the Club and have installed another new amplifier. This was last replaced about 4 or 5 years ago. That is about how long they last according to Custom Sound. We had planned on doing some other renovations but they just have been set to the back burner for now. Not because we can't do them but rather because we have been busy  doing other things in the interim.

Don't forget October is a busy month at the Club with Step down Shows and prep for the New King/Queen Competition. As well as Thanksgiving and then the Halloween show and party weekend to.

Before you know it we are into the Christmas season with the Club requiring a decorating committee and a team for the New Years Eve gala, that will occur again this year. Then it is time to renew memberships. Speaking of memberships, we have seen an increase in memberships this year, which is great to see. Let's hope this continues to rise. It's great to see the community coming together.

We have entered into an agreement with the Aids Committee of Durham region to host their dances at the Club. We are also doing more and more with Pflag. Such as the movie night we had at the end of September. It was a great movie and we had a chance to sit and talk afterwards.  Lastly we are working with Alan and his team to see what we can do to improve Pride for next year. Durham Pride has also came on Board and is connected with the community to be one as well. This year has seen a great community starting to blossom. Due in part to the Communities Involved meetings that occur on a monthly basis. For those who do not know, these were originally started by C.D.C.D (Travis Smith), and they did not go as well as Travis had planned. After a while, Jayme Harper picked up the project and took ownership. This community owes Jayme a big Thank You as he has done the job of pulling the various organizations together to form a community.

Although Pflag recently had the first awards night, the person who was not recognized was Jayme Harper. Applause to and for you Jayme!! for all the great work you do and continue to do for both Pflag and the community.

Inspired Media and Antoine are working on getting the new Club 717 website up and running soon. I cannot elaborate on the details much at this time. What I can tell you is that the Club Newsletter Sponsors have made this upgrade a reality. Special thank you goes out to all our newsletter sponsors !! Ed has picked up on sending out the weekly activity bulletins and is doing a good job at keeping us all informed of what is happening.

Anyway there is enough other information included in the newsletter for you to read, I have taken both enough space and enough of your time.

I did almost forget to mention other people who have been busting their butts to help Jason and Ruby, the Queen for a good part of the Year. These are Edna, who started the year off, Tim and then Ruby. Savanaugh, who arranged a few productions this year and is hosting the 717's Got Talent Competition, on her own time !!!!!Savvy you know how much I appreciate your help and Thank You again for a job well done. Also John Duvall does a lot of running around behind the scenes for the Club regularly. He has been doing Beer and Supply runs since April pretty well on his own. As well he does the bank paper work and gets the financials to the book keeper. He also does the cleaning of the Club every week and then makes sure we have the adequate amounts of coin for each weekend. In addition to this, John has pretty well put together each pot luck and BBQ for the past year. He has prepared the food for most of our special events. John, I cannot Thank You enough for all you do. The Club is indebted to you for all of your efforts. Steve O'Connor has also jumped on Board to fill an empty positon and has been doing a great job. He's also been helping John with the Beer runs when he has time. Ebony who has made a comeback and been participating in a time when we needed to rely on some of the past queens to help us through slow periods. Last but not least, thank you to  Farra N Hyte. For helping out and being available to the Club. I feel honored that Farra has done two shows since her injury in March and they have both been at Club 717. Farra you are a welcomed addition to the Club.

Special Thank You to all the patrons, members, and friends that support us each year and continue to do so. Without you, we have no community. Undoubtedly, I have probably forgotten to Thank someone along the line and if  I have please, realize it is not intentional. There are just so many things that everyone does to keep it all going, it is hard to remember.

Have a great month and see you at the Annual General Meeting.

Bye for Now!
Danny

Queen Ruby's Report Queen Ruby

Happy October and Thanksgiving Everyone;

I must be getting reallllllllly old because it just felt like I wrote the September newsletter.  Oh well, at least we are having summer now with the great weather.

The activity during September has been fantastic.  With our regular shows but also the Club 717's Talent kick off.  So far we have seen some great talent and performances and many more to come.  Once again, I would like to thank all the performers for the great Friday shows during September, as always a job well done.

Now for October we have a great line up scheduled;
Oct 2nd I will be hosting the show with talent from Toronto.
Oct 9th Twiggy and Ebony
Oct 16th Savanaugh and friends
Oct 23rd will be the Queen Mom Madge step down show
Oct 30th I'll (Ruby) will be the kicking off Halloween
Oct 31st is the Fright Night Party - come in costume for prizes, games and food.

This year Halloween falls on the Saturday, so the club is ready to party.  Go to the closet and dust off your costume or visit Value Village to make you own creations.  We are going to have prizes and games throughout the night and food to pick at.  So don't miss out for an exciting night at Club717.

As you can see we are now starting the preparation of choosing a new Sovereign.  It starts off with the step down of Queen Mom Madge on the 23rd of October and then on November 6 it will be my turn to step aside a Queen and become the next Queen Mom.  This year the Club has decide to have both a King and Queen to represent Club 717.  The competition is just around the corner, November 7th. If you want to be part of this competition, get a package from myself (Ruby )or the entertainment director (Jason) ASAP!!.  Remember the theme is Hollywood for this year.  So don't hold back, it will be great fun.  You need to pick music to perform 2 times to show your ability to become the next King and Queen.  First the theme and then talent.  Don't let the talent part scare you off, just do something outrageous to prove you have creativity.  Third you must present yourself formally and answer a question.  I know it seems a lot but the main thing is picking the music and then the  costumes and formal ware.  Remembering back for myself it was fun and I think you will have a great time.  Remember I will be around to help everybody that wants help and needs some advice.

So enough running off from the mouth. I will be at the club on Friday's so come over slap my tits and say Hi!!!!!!

MY KAWARTHA GARDENER >>> FEATURED BUSINESS >> JUST A BIT OUT OF DURHAM THIS MONTH!

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Bond. The owner/operator of  "My Kawartha Gardener" located in Lindsay, ON. That is about 1 hour drive north east of Oshawa for those that don't know. To contact Jim about your gardening & related needs please call him @ 705- 328-8007 (leave a message). The email address is: jim@mykawarthagardener.com or check out his website located at: http://www.mykawarthagardener.com

After Gardening for his whole life Jim decided to take it a step further and gain some formal training. Jim completed the Landscape Design Certificate program at Ryserson University in Toronto in 2002. He then went to work at the Toronto based company Acme Environmentals in their planting department. He did seasonal display planting for both commercial & residential properties. Jim also worked for a local landscaping company in Ajax for 4 years where he did more planting, some designing and hardscaping (patios retaining walls etc.). With his education, work experience, and passion for plants and gardening Jim had the desire of having his own business one day. After spending 4 years visiting Lindsay on weekends (working in Davids gardens) he knew that this was the place to be, so he moved north.

Jim stated he felt that Durham Region was growing too rapidly for his liking & this did not appeal to him; he preferred to work in a small town setting to set up & establish his own business & have the opportunity to be his own boss.  Now he can really let his creative juices flow!  Jim finds that there is a bit less compition in a smaller community, however, that being said the market is smaller as well.  Through working with his good friend David, hybridizing daylillies and propagating iris hosta and several other perennials Jim is able to get good quality plant material, even some varieties that you wont find at a nursery. Jim's gardening style has a more natural look and feel compared with some other designers.  This approach to gardening fits well with cottage country, small towns or rural living.
Jim noted that NOW is the time to think about what you want to do next year (vis a vis your gardens). Jim will gladly meet with you & give you a free estimate whether it be for your get away cottage property, a rural home & or small town place.  Jim's focus is on garden maintenance (e.g.weekly or monthly), foundation planting, garden & landscape design (e.g. small pond construction).  He has experience in annual, display & foundation planting. Also, Jim does spring & fall cleanup and garden renovations.

I would highly recommend Jim & his expertise in helping an owner achieve the look he/she wants for their property. He is friendly, knowledgeable & hardworking, all geared to helping a property owner achieve that "unique" garden.
***If you know of a gay or gay friendly business in the Durham Region that might be interested in being featured in an upcoming newsletter kindly have them contact me at: cottageguy@rogers.com

Well I know it is hard to believe that October is here. Enjoy the beautiful natural colours that Mother Nature provides for us each year.

Entertainment Director - Jason
Hey folks,

Just wanted to say a quick hello, and fill you in on some of the things.

Sunday's new hours of 7PM-11PM have been doing well and we've received good feedback from our members and patrons.

A few shot-outs for the help that I've received go to Dave for "Singles Night" and Donna for "Ladies Night". You both should be very proud of yourselves for a job well done.  I'm looking forward to your next events!! If any other members have ideas for functions at the club and can help organize them, please email me...

As you may already know, the AIDS Committee of Durham Region is now holding their monthly dances at the Club. Please come out and show your support. The next "AIDS Committee Dance" / Fundraiser is on October 17th. Hope to see you there supporting a great cause.

Club 717's new Annual Competition called: "Club 717's Got Talent" (with an idol spin) has been a great hit. Thank You for your support. The contest started on September 13th 2009, and will be running for 12 weeks! Come see this new competition, and cheer on the contestants. I would like to thank all of the Judges for donating their time, to make this event successful. As some of you saw on Sunday, Jason (AKA Hot Stuff) has had to leave the judging table due to a new job; But Farra N. Hyte has taken over. She's offering great feedback to the contestants, and looks great doing it. Have any suggestions for any twists, email me ideas at Jason@club717.ca! 50/50 Tickets will not be available each Sunday, ask your door person for more information.

Special Thank You to our Sponsors:
Stag Shop, Inspired Media, Ms. C's Closet, Twiggy and Club 717's Board of Directors. 1st place: $2000.00 Cash, 2nd place: $500.00 Cash, 3rd place: A Drag themed Prize Pack form Ms. C's Closet in Toronto.

Queen Ruby and myself have both started working on Club 717`s King and Queen Competition. This year we've decided to open the floor, and have both a King and a Queen... This Contest will be November 7th, 2009, for more information, or the competition package, email me at Jason@club717.ca or Ruby at Queen@club717.ca Entry deadline is October 16th, 2009 at midnight.

The Comment(ARY) BEST KEPT TO MYSELF !!

I will be honest - there have been precious few offerings in the last few weeks that have been persuasive enough to make me drop my $10-$15 admittance fee to my local cinema.

While I am living in great anticipation for upcoming films such as 'Nine' with Daniel Day-Lewis, 'A Christmas Carol' with Jim Carey, and "Alice in Wonderland" with Johnny Depp, I simply can't get it up for the Trailer Park Boys or Bruce Willis' latest attempt to re-live his Die Hard glory days.  What is a cinephile to do in this, the most awkward of seasons, sandwiched between the Summer Blockbusters and the Winter Oscar Race?

For me, it is a retreat to my DVD collection and delving into the most amazing invention ever created in the field of home entertainment - the DVD commentary!  What better way to bring even more enjoyment of your favorite cinematic masterpieces than to know that your favorite scene was almost cut due to time or budget restraints?  Or to discover that the actors playing best friends or lovers really couldn't stand the sight of each other in their daily lives?

Of course I realize not everyone shares my enthusiasm for the commentary on a DVD.  Take my family.  They don't understand why I would watch the same movie twice in a single lifetime, let alone why I need to know that Francis Ford Coppola strategically placed 'Blood' oranges in several of Marlon Brando's important scenes in "The Godfather".  Or that the voices of all the toddlers in Pixar's 'Monsters Inc." are played by the actual children of the animators, who brought them all into the recording studio and just let them yell at the microphones for a couple of hours.  And they certainly don't understand why I need to know what it took for Rob Marshall, a gay director, to create the heterosexual love story "Memoirs of a Geisha" - in which he stunningly presents a representation of the world of Japanese geisha's on celluloid - using a cast of Chinese actresses, and based on a source novel written by an American Caucasian male.

In a nutshell - I like the commentary because it allows me to experience the film both as a casual observer, as well as a member of the creative team who produced it.  It allows me inside the magic of the movies, without having to move to LA or go on location for 6 months at a time.

***Note to Steven Spielberg***Please sir, get off your high horse and start making some commentary tracks, rather than all the extra 'featurettes' you force down our throats - if Barbara Streisand can start doing them, so can you.
Best Regards,
Kevan

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie  Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie

OCTOBER  IN THE  GARDEN

Raking is one of those garden chores that people don not like to do. As they get sore from the new activity. So here are some pointers:

1). Start and finish with stretches for shoulders, backs and legs.
2). Wear comfortable shoes with sturdy rubber soles to prevent slipping and to support the back.
3). Keep one hand near the top of the rake for leverage while holding the handle close to the body to help maintain good posture.
4). Change sides frequently and avoid twisting from the waist. Instead of planting your feet side to side, place one foot ahead of the other which allows you to shift back and forth easily.
5). Take breaks when needed.

Do's and Don'ts for Fall Gardening
Do cut back finished annuals, diseased plans or any that may take over if allowed to seed freely. Do cut back Peony, Iris and Hosta Foliage, Which can harbor diseases and pests. Don't cut back perennials to early. Leave some through the winter, as seed heads and coloured foliage can be beautiful, while seeds feed wintering birds. Do rake and remove leaves from lawn every week. Grass needs the sunshine to be strong for the spring growth. Don't leave flower beds bare - mulch with fallen leaves, if possible. Shred the leaves with a lawn mover or mulching leaf vac first. Do continue to water if the weather is dry, especially newly planted trees and shrubs and many of the broadleaf types like Euonymous. They need moisture to survive the winter. Do use winter mulch to help maintain a more even temperature. Mulch helps the plants to survive the freezing and thawing periods that occur during the winter. You can even lay boughs from your Christmas tree on beds to trap snow, that could blow away. Snow cover is a blanket for the garden plants. Good snow cover means more protection. Thank goodness, it has started to finally rain. It takes the pressure of the need to water as much. And there is still time to plant some spring flowering bulbs, trees, shrubs and perennials. Just be sure to keep them well watered and mulched before winter really arrives.

With Thanksgiving and Halloween fast approaching, you might be able to use some of your garden plants for floral display on your dinner tables and decorate with pumpkins, grasses and berry plants for that fall display in front of your house. Perhaps a homemade wreath ???

So enjoy the season for all its colour and change, as winter is just around the corner.

Till next time,

Something to Say... Savanaugh - Something to Say

It's an exciting time of year at the club and there is so much going on!  While we are all enjoying the events, shows and competitions, I would like to take this opportunity to point out the amazing work that is done at the club by so many committed staff.

I'm not sure the patrons really understand the huge amount of work behind everything that happens at the club.  Email upon email, meeting after meeting for every single event to take place and even just for the doors to open throughout the week.  Countless hours go unseen by so many for all of us to reap the benefits of an evening out with friends.

Then we must acknowledge all of those that make each and every evening happen when the doors finally open.  From the door staff, floor staff, bartenders, DJ, light person and the performers.  Countless hours are given and for many with little compensation.  Even those who do receive a salary for the evening, are working for considerably less than if they took a position at a mainstream, for-profit bar.

So, how can we show our appreciation?   For one thing... don't give them a hard time.  They are always doing the best they can and on some nights, find themselves really over-worked.  Don't forget, while they are there to help make your evening as pleasant as possible, they are also your friends, brothers and sisters.

How else can you help out?   Leave them a small tip!   Most in the Club are in fact working predominantly for tips.  One wouldn't dare not tip at a mainstream bar, so why do we often not feel the need to do so at Club 717?   I really believe it is because we are all friends.  The friendly face behind the bar or friendly performer on the stage is still working their behinds off for you.  Show them some appreciation if you can.  Leave behind the change from the $5.00 at the bar... after all - where else are the drink prices near as low?  If the performer on stage is working their ass off for you... why not become a part of the show with a tip here and there.

If you have a great time at the Club..... if someone has gone out of their way to make you comfortable.... If the performer on stage has obviously put a lot of effort into entertaining you.... - don't be afraid to show your appreciation.

There ya have it...
Savanaugh had something to say!
Well as you can see there's allot going on in the life of the Club. As with any Non-Profit organization it's through the hard work and dedication of it's members that keep it going.

If you are able to volunteer please contact Bob our Staffing Director for more details. We are always looking for fresh faces behind the bar and for the many positons through out the club.
