 Quote of the Month

The basic thing is that everyone wants happiness, no one wants suffering. And happiness mainly comes from our own attitude, rather than from external factors. If your own mental attitude is correct, even if you remain in a hostile atmosphere, you feel happy."

Joke of the Month

Four gay guys walk into a bar and start arguing over who's penis is longer.

Well the bar tender finally got sick of hearing them arguing so told them he had a way to solve this problem.

He told them to stick their penis' on the bar and he'd tell them who's was bigger.

Well just as the put them up there, another gay guy walks in and yells "I'll have the buffet!"

From the President Danny - President of Club 717

Happy September.

Wow that was a quick summer!!! Or did it actually even get here? The Ex is up and in full swing which always signifies the end of summer and back to school. This summer has seen a lot of activity at the Club and we have managed to keep things running well. Again no major losses during the slow period. We really did not have to use our savings for operating and the losses were lower then previous years, all good signs.

Everyone has been busy with ideas and trying to come up with new things to increase the Club's attendance. Jason has come up with a good idea that should see Sundays busier for a while, and it has sparked a lot of interest. I was in Toronto the other night and heard mention of it from some Toronto performers !!

Club 717 was asked by PFLAG to co-sponsor a bus along with the Pink Pages Directory, for the Gay Day at Canada's Wonderland. We did, and PFLAG certainly made sure Club 717 along with the other sponsors were recognized. Those of you who attended would have heard them thanking the Club and also you would have noticed that they had all the sponsor's logos listed in the napkin advertising boxes.

This summer has seen some of our staff leave, and a couple of Board Members as well. I would like to Thank them for their efforts and contributions while they were giving their time to the Club. This sometimes goes unrecognized.

October is fast approaching and it is a busy time. We have the Annual General meeting along with the King/Queen competition coming up. I am working on an idea that may see some increased business coming to the Club as well. We have noticed this time around that Karaoke is doing better, not quite as well as we hoped, but it is improving. Why not come out and give it a try!!!!

With everyone being so busy over the summer doing all kinds of activities, we have not seen some of the regular faces for awhile. I hope you all have enjoyed your summer either camping, boating, fishing and the likes.

Sunday hours are being changed to 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. This will enable better attendance at Jason's event. Also more good news. The Aids Committee has entered an agreement with us to hold the dances at 717 in the future instead of at the Masonic Hall. We are pleased to be working with them again!!! Come out and support the dances!!

Devon has come back to the Club as a DJ and staff member. I am looking forward to hearing him spin some tunes, and seeing what he brings next. Rob is now the Staffing Director and if you would like to volunteer anytime feel free to contact him.

Ed has been working to get some new sponsorships for upcoming things and we recently popped into Stag Shop on Church to acquire some sponsorship. They graciously offered several items for the competition along with setting it up so that Club 717 members will receive a discount at the Stag Shop on Church if you show your membership card prior to your purchases.

Priape on Church St. also has sponsored several events at the Club of late. They have been providing items for the leather nights and Naughty but Nice on King St. in Oshawa has also made donations several times over the years. Naught but Nice on King St. also provides members of 717 with a discount.

A couple of the recent shows went over very well. Billie introduced the Club to a new Performer, and an unexpected performance from Farra N Hyte plus another new performer who surprised us with their Michael Jackson impersonation. Benn Dover introduced Tripp Dover, which was an awesome show, and you can definitely see the family resemblance. Ruby hosted a show with new performers and they were incredible, and I must say they kept everyone watching with interest. And I cannot forget the two woman show that was put on by Savanaugh and Ineeda Tips. The work that went into that show was very noticeable and kudos to you all for the work over the summer.

The latest show I will comment on was Ebony and Twiggy (who replaced Chardonnay due to an injury). You two filled the house and rocked!! Ebony, I am still hearing comments about your amazing performance. Twiggy you made the Club look great and people were glad you hosted it. You kept them laughing over the microphone. You also did some great work with disturbia and the likes. I was so busy at the bar I did not get a chance to see the show.. Ebony please extend our deep gratitude to Aqualibrium for the gifts they graciously donated to the Club to give away as prizes for your "best chest" contest.

Don't forget Peterborough Pride is coming up soon and they will be having a dance. We can also lend some support to this event, as the people from Peterborough always come out to support Durham!!!!

I really need to say Thanks to all of those who work in the background all the time and never get recognized, but there are so many. surely I would miss someone - not intentionally. So thank you to all members, patrons, staff and volunteers for keeping us going. Thank you to the other Board members who give so much of your time on a volunteer basis. Even on short notice and for the countless hours you have contributed to this community.

Have a great fall, next edition will be Thanksgiving, I wanted to jump start that!!!

Bye for Now!
Danny

Queen Ruby's Report Queen Ruby

Hi Everyone;

Boy!!!!  The summer is almost over and vacation time is coming to an end.  Darn!!!!
Anyway, I would like to thank all the performers for great August shows.  Although we have not had a great sunny and hot summer (which is great for the performers), I know we had a great time for the couple of "hot" Fridays.  Sweating is not great for the makeup but is good for the waist.  I would like to welcome 2 new performers to our family: (Franny and Barbee).  You did a fantastic show, and everyone enjoyed the night. Thanks again and I hope to see you again in September and many more shows.

This September we have;
The 4th - Trish and her gang
The 11th - Queen Mom Madge's birthday (getting close to the 6o mark). On the 18th - Savanaugh and friends, and on the 25th - Queen Ruby
I would like to welcome back the students to Club 717, and I hope you had a great summer vacation.  Hope everybody who wants to perform in the 10 week drag idol signs up for the great prizes.  Get in touch with our entertainment director Jason or myself if you are interested.  The Queen and King packages are ready to be picked, up so let me know and I will get one to you.  The theme is Hollywood. I know there are a lot of great songs and ideas ready for you to chose.

Our next big event will be Halloween.  It's going to be a 2 nighter, October 30th and 31st.  Friday will be a drag show in theme and Saturday is going to be your night. So get creative (visit Value Village) and get the costumes ready.  There will be PRIZES and finger foods; it should a great Halloween.
Well I think I have been running off at the mouth long enough.  See you on Fridays, so come on over say "Hi" and slap my Tits.

Out in Durham - by Steve O'Connor

I had the pleasure of interviewing Earl (Lance) McDonald for this month's
featured business.

Lance McDonald has been a real estate agent in Oshawa & Durham Region for the past 23 years. It is important to note that he is a licensed, registered & insured sales agent with Career Real Estate Services Ltd., Oshawa. You can reach him via phone @ 905 576-3622 or contact via his email at herc3@rogers.com You can click the image below for a larger view of his business card.

Professional Realtor - Lance McDonald

In addition to selling homes in the Oshawa area Lance has also sold
properties in the Barrie & Haliburton areas as well.

In order to sell homes, cottages etc. the Province of Ontario mandates the following: 1). 3 mandatory basic real estate courses 2). 2 years of articling is required 3). must obtain 24 points (24 hours) of education every 2 years after that & this is always ongoing for a real estate agent. Further, only lawyers & registered real estate agents are allowed to take part in real estate transactions.

Lance deals a lot with both new 1st time home buyers & several repeat customers. Lance said that about 85% of his clients do research online prior to contacting him. It is really important to know what you want, what you can reasonable afford  (get a preapproved mortgage) & see what is out there on the market in your price range. Communication is key between the client, seller & agent.

Presently, the real estate market in Oshawa is steady but slow. Prices are off the high of 2 years ago. This is good news for 1st time home buyers attempting to get into the market. In Durham Region, there has been a 19% increase in sales over the same time last year. Pickering, Ajax & Whitby are the "hot" communities for sales right now. In helping his clients, Lance will give out a list of both lawyers & mortgage brokers & the clients are free to choose from this list who they wish. A 5 year fixed mortgage rate is only 4.15% & a variable rate one is less than 3%. These are historically low interest rates. Lance has flexible working hours to meet his customers needs.

He is usually only booked up for a few days. Of course, Lance has
access through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) to all homes for sale in Durham Region.

Lance has owned several businesses over the years before getting into real estate. In the home decorating field he owned Pattes Paint & Wallpaper for 6 years. Also, he owned Rainbows Decorating in Port Perry. He owned & operated the Color Your World store on Simcoe St. North, Oshawa as well as having stores in Pembrooke & Scarborough. He was the regional sales manager for Color Your World & Sherwin-Williams for 8 years.

Lance has owned a cottage which he built himself on Crystal Lake in the Kawarthas for the past 40 years.

He rents out this 2 bedroom lakefront cottage for a weekend, a week or 2, monthly. Club 717 Members receive a discounted rate. See coupon below.

To view the cottage please go

If you know of a gay or gay positive business that would like to be featured in a future column "Out in Durham", kindly have them contact me. My email address is: cottageguy@rogers.com

Here hoping & wishing for a warmer September.

The 'Streep' Taste of Success

Possibly the one of the most entertaining performances by an actress in a movie this past summer has been Meryl Streep's portrayal of Julia Child in the bio-comedy, Julie & Julia.  This movie features a parallel story line between celebrity chef's Julia Child's discovery of French cuisine and purpose in post-WWII Paris, and office worker Julie Powell's discovery of her own vision and self-worth while cooking her way through Child's first successful book 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking'.  Most critics have offered high praise for Streep and the portions of the film that focus on Child's life and experiences, while relegating the parts of the movie focused on Powell (deftly played by Amy Adams) as the parts to set aside for bathroom breaks and re-fills of you super-size popcorn bags.

While it is true that Streep shines as Child - effectively portraying a real-life character twenty years younger and eight inches taller than yourself will always be considered an accomplishment - I personally differ with the majority of the critics on the value of Julie Powell's storyline.  While Powell is certainly less colourful and flamboyant of a role, her presence adds a sense of balance to the movie as a whole.  Audiences would quickly grow bored of Julia Child's whoops and hollers in her Parisian kitchen, if they weren't juxtaposed to Powell's emotional breakdowns and domestic arguments in hers.  Powell goes through all the trials and tribulations of modern life that a modern audience can identify with (job apathy, competitive relations with friends, instant fame and fame and recognition through media), while Child is sometimes relegated to a quaint pictorial of 1950's America.  It is the running contrast between the two stories that make the movie work for me.
In the end, both women begin their journey's in the film as a means to an end - Julia Child wants to find 'something to do' in Paris, while Julie Powell wants to find 'something to finish' in life.  In both cases, the women are successful - but of course, the definition of 'success' at each of their moments in history is something completely different.
Prediction -The majority of this cast will be considered a side dish to Streep's main course - a 16th Academy Award nomination is on the horizon, with writer/director Nora Ephron perhaps squeezing in a screenwriting nod.  Bon Appetite!
Best Regards,
Kevan

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie  Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie

SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN

Where has the summer gone??? It's time to start thinking about the approaching winter.  If you have planted some of your tropical plants outside, it's time to dig them up and repot them so that you can bring them in the house as the frosty nights approach.  Supposedly September 15th is the  cut off for frost free nights. So by potting those tender tropicals now, you will be ready to move them inside. It's also good to move plants in before the heat goes on in the house because that heat is also stressful for the plants along with the lack of light due to the shorter days. Also by potting your plants and pacing them in an area near the house, you will be able to spray them with soap and water so that you will not bring in any critters. Also water the plants with a soapy solution will help with soil bugs. Plants like hibiscus, lantana and anything that has grown too large, I would prune back quite hard. Your house is only so big !! A tablespoon of liquid dish soap like Palmolive to 1 liter of water is a suitable spray or drench.

Fall is also a good time to move shrubs, trees and perennials, if you need too. Sometimes I prefer to wait until spring but I have already moved a couple of Hydrangeas, and some daylilies and will be moving a peony before winter sets in.  You must keep them watered if we are not getting any rain. You can continue to dead head those spent flowers and you can cut back tall perennials if you find them too floppy or unsightly. I usually wait until spring, but some people like a very clan and neat garden, and that's okay too! If you still want to add some colour to your garden, mums, flowering cabbage or Kale, fall pansies or icicle pansises are available. The garden centres are loaded with Hydrangeas and Rose of Sharon right now, so you could still pop those into the garden right now. If your thinking of Christmas, Hydrangeas dry very well. Just cut long stems on a dry day and hang them upside down in a dry warm place. Remove the leaves the leaves first or you'll have an awful mess. When dried, in about two to three weeks, you can use them as they are, or you can spray paint them with colour or sparkles.

Shortly the garden centres will be selling spring bulbs, which are planted in the fall. Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus, Alliums, Scilla, ET. Can add such bold colour to the spring garden. And tulips are offered as early, mid season and late flowering, so that you could have tulips in bloom from April to June end. Bulbs add another dimension to your garden and they disappear in early summer under the perennial or shrubs. Once their leaves start to turn yellow you can clip them off. if they bare too unsightly.  This a also a good time to assess your current garden. Decide what is staying and what you want to replace. Sometimes gardens need to be reorganized.   Because that short plant that you love is hiding behind that really big sprawling plant that you also love. So the little can be moved in front of the tall one. Perhaps on your travels around the neighborhood you have spotted some plants that you would like to try or some colour combinations that you would like to reproduce at your home. Make some notes, because somehow through the winter you'll probably forget.

Although things are slowing down, the weeds are still growing and need to be pulled. If we do not get much rain you still need to water your garden, especially if you've planted new shrubs, trees and perennials this year. The first year of planting requires require regular waterings, up until frost if need be. Once we hit late fall, usually we get enough rains. IF you've planted tomatoes and cucumbers, by now you probably have a vegetable stand on he front lawn, or you've started making tomato chutney, pickles or you are smothering your neighbors and family with veggies.

Anyway, Enjoy your gardens while we still have some nice weather. I am going to take a walk in the garden now with a glass of wine, before turning into watch, "So you think you can Dance Canada"........

Till next time in October,

"LeatherFolk" - by Mike Childerhose

The Inner Experience

Through radical enactment and the emotional catharsis it provides, radical sexuality can be an empowering, soul-making process.  Obviously, it is hardly the only way to Self, existing, as it does, more as an acquired taste than a wholesale recommendation.  Still, the spiritually transformative qualities of S/M experience are now being claimed by leatherfolk -not as a way to justify their love but to articulate its most profound message.  For many in the leather community today, S/M actually means "sex magic."  It is their art and craft and means of taking a shamanic journey into the "other world" of personal and collective myth.  It is in that secret inner place where the healing occurs.

The soul is an earthy place, and we cannot sanitize it in order to make claims of "getting well."  As we descend through the psyche's strata we discover violence: Dream images of strange drama and torture are not uncommon.  The inner world is a place of blood and fire, tears and mud.  It is the soul's nature to be in organic upheaval, a perpetual state of death and rebirth, just like the outer world around it.  We cannot put a lid on our soul business and its disquieting work.  In this context, to acknowledge and explore one's S/M interests and instincts is to act in the truth.

In saying this, however, I am certainly not trying to glorify sadomasochism or convert anyone to its practice.  The subject is too deep and personal for that.  Critics say that S/M is no more than a playing out of society's oppression: internalizing the oppressor within and projecting this cruelty onto others in destructive ways.  In some cases, I might agree.  Radical sexual play, in any form that is not loving and self-aware, can devolve into serious abuse - what some would call evil behaviour.  Taking responsibility for the inner journey also means to act in a responsible manner, especially when it comes to sophisticated sexual games.  The leather community has come a long way in separating the murkiness of shame-bound feelings from unacceptable actions toward others.  And one purpose of this book is to document a bit  of that evolution.

Join us on October 10th for our next Men's Leather / Denim Event "October Fest". This will be a fundraiser for "Denise House". See our advertisement on the left sidebar for all the activities. Special Guest: Mr. Leather Toronto, Peter Dillon. Hope to see you there !!

Until next time, please play safe and be happy.

Yours In Brotherhood

Something to Say... Savanaugh - Something to Say

Here we go again... back to reality and routine!    The day planner is out and the dates are filling up very quickly.  Slow lazy days of summer are wrapping up and the reality of work is hitting hard.  It's good for us though.......some structure and actually getting things done.   Work hard and play hard!
It is also the time of year for big changes at the club.  As we begin to say good-bye to our reigning Queen and Queen Mom and look to new leadership for the year to come.  I'm not sure how many people are actually aware of the HUGE commitment the position comes with.  Queen Ruby has done an amazing job working endless hours to make sure shows and events get on at the club.  You could only imagine how difficult it is to get a bunch of Queens focused and on task!  Great job Ruby... and thank you!

So the big question - is Savanaugh running for Queen this year?   And the big answer - nope!  While I would never allow the club to go without a Queen in any given year, it has never been my ambition to be Queen of the Cub.   It is a huge commitment and everyone knows that when Savanaugh does something, she goes big!  (SHUTUP!)    To take on Queen would have to mean that I drop many of the community programs I am so active in... in particular, working with LGBTQ youth in Durham.   There's only so much of Savanaugh to go around (SHUTUP once again!)   The great news is the introduction of a drag King and Queen for any given year.  This is awesome!   So, any queens out there willing to give it a go.... you have my full support!

Speaking of change... props to our new Entertainment Director Jason.  A very difficult position to step into and so far, he has done so in a big way!   Fresh new events, the club booked up to the hilt... it's all good!   Upcoming Drag Idol with a HUGE prize should prove to be very entertaining.  So another big question - is Savanaugh competing in Drag Idol?  And the big answer - nope!    I am not really a competitor and don't do competitions.  For me, drag is an outlet for artistic expression and social commentary.  So, any queens and kings out there willing to give it a go.... You have my full support!

Enjoy every last minute of sun that you can and see everyone in the club for a year of drink and dance!   Don't forget to work hard and play hard my friends!

There ya have it...
Savanaugh had something to say!
