From the President
Hello everyone. Well here it is August!! Already, wow time is flying these days. Before you know it we will be seeing the Exhibition open and that signifies the end of another summer, wait a minute, has the summer of 09 arrived? The Club has gone through a few changes lately and things are finally starting to come back to order. We have had a couple of people leave the Board. Tim and Kelly, thank you for all your efforts over the past years. You will be missed on the Board. Also we have had a few people leave staffing at the Club. These include Dave, Tim, Kelly, and Bianca. They have left for various reasons and that is their private information. I would like to wish you all well in your future endeavors, and you will all be missed around here on a staff level, but I know you will still be coming around as patrons!! Anyway, with those that have left, you will be seeing some old faces around and on the bar. As well, one of our old house Deejays who is well known and liked will be returning. There is also one of our very old staff that will be returning for some shifts and possible another that you have not seen around for a few years, working!! I am excited that these people are coming back and there are several things in the works. This is going to be an exciting fall at 717 and we have the weekends booked up to the end of November for events and functions, We now have a new Entertainment Director, which is Jason and he has been busting his butt to get everything in order for the fall. Jason has already met with the queens and has the schedule set till the end of November and we have a couple of special performances planned during this time also. We also will be having various things happening on Saturday nights for the next while which include the Private function of Swingers night. There will be more leather events and also we will be starting a woman's group soon. We have a couple of requests in for private functions on a couple of Saturdays as well. The regular entertainment events will be happening as well. Club 717 will be hosting its first ever "Singles"night for the LGTB community I would like to welcome Jean Guy back to the Board of Directors in an official capacity as the new secretary and I would like to welcome Rob to the position of Staffing Director. John L. Thanks for a job well done while you did the scheduling for staff for the past three years. We are working on updating the lighting and sound equipment at the Club to provide a better atmosphere for you our patrons and members and there are a few new things on the horizon that you will be happy to know are changing at the Club. Community has been a focus of this Board and the bond is becoming well established again!! That is exciting. Watch for the upcoming posters, you will be excited to see some of the new things that will be happening. Club 717 hopes to see a fair amount of our patrons supporting PFLAG at Canada's Wonderlands Gay day!!! Jayme Harper along with PFLAG has arranged a great day for us!!! And there will be a bus courtesy of Inspired Media (The Pink Pages and Club 717). By the way the new edition of the Pink pages has hit the stands !! Club 717 now is included, thanks to our Sponsor Inspired Media. There has been tones of things happening in the background lately and we are going to start introducing all of these changes in the next month. I am excited that Jason has taken Entertainment on and he is running with it full steam. He has a great plan in the works and you will hear about this form him very soon. Donna recently re sealed the floors at the Club and they look amazing!! Karaoke has been gaining momentum and is getting better each time; we had a good crowd in for karaoke last week. Club 717 will be hosting its very own website soon and Ed is working very hard on that with Inspired Media. The Board has looked at a few options and had an idea of what we will end up with. We are sure you will love it and you will be using it fairly soon. I could go on and on with upcoming things but I do not want to bore everyone with all the little things, just keep your eyes out as all these changes start to take place. Thanks to all who are always coming out and assisting with all the tasks we have to complete regularly. And Special Thanks to John and Mike for continuously doing the liquor, beer and supply runs to keep everyone happy. You guys are awesome and have been doing this for several months now, I appreciate all you do!!! Regards to all Have a great Read and a great month!!!!!

Queen Ruby's Report
Hello Everybody;
I can not believe how fast the summer is going by. Now it's time to start planning for the new King / Queen competition. Remember the theme this year is Hollywood. I hope that many of the performers are planning to compete to represent Club 717 as Queen or King for the upcoming year.
Being Queen of Club 717 has been an experience of my lifetime. It could be a lot of work but with the help of friends and Queen Mom you will enjoy the reign. I am reviewing the package and it will be available soon for everybody to obtain a copy.
Once again I need to thank all the performers who performed this July. "Fabulous Job" by all. And I know that August will be the same. So Mark your calendars and come on out.
August 5th - Benn Dover and friends August 14th - Special Guest - To be announced August 21st - Ruby along with some New performers August 28th - The Sisters are back - Chardonnay and Ebony
I need to also thank all who have came out for the shows. Remember if it was not for the customers, we as performers could not have the fun on Friday evenings. So from Queen Ruby and performers, I would like the thank you all.
You'll be able to see me on Friday's, so come on over say "Hi" and slap my Tits.

It was a real pleasure to interview John Mills, the Managing Director/Travel Consultant at Algonquin Travel.
This business is located in the Kingsway Village plaza (next door to Zellers). The mailing address is: 1300 King Street East, Unit # 14, Oshawa, ON L1H 8J4. Phone # 905 579-2261 or toll free 1-800-884-3999. Fax Line # is 905 579-5431. Click their logo below for a direct link to their website.

John studied at the Toronto School of Business in Oshawa & took the Travel & Tourism course. This was the 9 month fast tracking & condensed course. John has a Bachelor of Science from Trent University in Peterborough & was working at E.I. Lilly as a microbiologist. He wanted a career change & the opportunity to own his own business one day. John started working for Algonquin Travel in 1991. Within 4 months & along with a business partner he bought the business. Two other business partners joined the business in 1992. At that time, Algonquin Travel was in a plaza at King St East & Wilson. They moved to the present location in 1998 & the Algonquin Travel offices were closed at 5 points Mall (north Oshawa), Simcoe St. North & King & Wilson as well as closing Intra Travel.
Along with a silent partner (who is a member of Club 717) John owns Algonquin Travel. Algonquin Travel was founded in 1964 in Ottawa. In October 2000, Algonquin Travel Corporation was purchased by MyTravel Group > a global leisure travel services company with operations in 24 countries. Using franchising as the primary strategy for national expansion, the company expanded throughout Canada in the 1990's. These franchises operate professional travel agencies across Canada. Their corporate strength lies in their entrepreneurial spirit. Each agency is locally owned & operated by professionals who offer quality service & advise. As well as the ability to research your vacation & book it online. MyTravel affiliates are dedicated to the franchise system as a method to allow small agencies to provide the complete range of services enjoyed by the mega travel companies while maintaining local autonomy.
John advised me that this travel agency sells everything from train tickets, travel insurance, airline tickets, vacation packages, group functions & special events like out of the country wedding packages. The only thing they do not sell is bus tickets. John said that the gay & lesbian travelers are 1 of the biggest travel groups because many have the money & time to travel even during these challenging economic times.
Algonquin Travel is a very gay friendly business. John & Sharon can give the gay clientele good advise on gay or gay friendly destinations. They are a small personal business that really caters to their customers. As an owner John believes in giving personalized & friendly service to all the customers. They fully explain & answer all the customer's questions about their specific travel destination.
Algonquin Travel enjoys the benefits of having happy customers who return for the next vacation needs. There are a lot of referrals from happy customers as well. It is very important for customers to trust what the travel agents do. By booking with a travel agent a customer can be assured that their travel bookings are protected by TICO (Travel Industry Council of Ontario). John & Sharon are both professional travel consultants who as professionals give you expert advise & answer any questions a customer might have. They give you good value for your money. Further it is important to note that booking through a licensed & experienced travel agent gets you the same price as booking online. Many people still believe that online direct booking is cheaper but that is not true. The busiest time of the year is from September to March. There are lots of customers who like to get away during the fall & especially the winter.
If you know of a gay or gay positive business that would like to be featured in a future column "Out in Durham" kindly have them contact me. My email address is: cottageguy@rogers.com
Here hoping & wishing for a warmer August.

| Kev's REEL World |
I am very honored to have been asked to contribute a movie column to the Club 717 newsletter. I come to my love of film quite naturally - like many young gay men, I found refuge from the real world in the dark vestibules of the cinema. The lights would go down, and I would bask in the opportunity to forget about my life outside and spend a day with the hopes, fears, worries and triumphs of the characters on the screen. Movies were like a drug for me, and as my family will tell you, remain one of my favorite 'highs' to this date. It was a habit well fed in my university years, when I worked at the local video store and my older brother worked for the Famous Players theatre chain! Since movie columns seem to be fascinated with lists, I thought I would contribute a short list of my own movie milestones, in order to establish my tastes and perspectives to the reader - these are not absolutes, just a quick snapshot of my movie-going experiences.... First Movie I Remember Seeing: A re-re-release of Walt Disney's "Bambi" - I think I was about 4 years old. First Movie I Saw By Myself: "Superman" in 1978 - I was a little gay boy who wanted the tights and cape SOOO badly!! Or did I want what was IN the tights and cape? First Movie I Cried In: I cried at the very end of "The Color Purple", but the other one that stands out for me is River Phoenix's pivotal scene with Martha Plimpton in "Running on Empty". First Overtly Gay Film I Ever Saw: "Pricilla, Queen of the Desert" in 1994 - 24 years old, and only been out for 2 years....closest thing prior to this was the fun but chaste "Victor Victoria" Guilty Pleasure The Red Curtain Trilogy of Baz Luhrman - "Strictly Ballroom", "Romeo & Juliet", and "Moulin Rouge". Coming Next Month: My first full column for the
Club 717 Newsletter - don't miss it!
Best Regards,

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie
We have a cedar hedge which we clip mid to late July. By clipping it at this time, we only have to do it once per year. If we clip it earlier, we need to repeat the clipping. This is because of all the new growth. Most of the flowering shrubs have been trimmed back to keep them to a manageable size and to a more manicured look. When you have a small garden you must keep things manicured or the garden becomes overgrown and unkempt. If I were to let the garden go, I would have to remove some plants to let them reach their full sizes.
It's been a tremendous weed year. The weeds are starting to slow down, but you still need to get out there and pull, pull, pull. I have mulched some of the beds in the back with all my clippings, prunings and even dead weeds that I have let cook in the garage for a week before I throw them on the soil between some plants.
With that mulching it does suppress some weeds. Next year I won't see any of that, except for anything that was really woody. With all of that it also helps to improve the soil, as it decomposes.
August is a time to evaluate the garden: What was good and what wasn't?? Maybe some plants need to be moved to a new location with more sun / less sun, more water / less water. Maybe some soil amendments to make them flourish. Rhododendrons, azaleas and blueberries like an acidic soil, one that is very peaty - so mulches with peat moss, oak leaves or pine needles would help to give them the soil conditions that they like. There are also fertilizers for acidic liking plants.
If you are still shopping and planting, there are some good plant sales on now, as some garden centres are trying to clear out their stock. Now is the time to start thinking about spring bulbs. Tulips, daffodils, and many other spring bulbs may be planted in September / October. These are early season spring flowers. Spring bulbs add another layer to your existing garden. I already know that I am going to move a couple of my perennials next year. They are cramped in the space where they are now and I want to give them room to grow to their potential. This is he time of year where I judge my annual plantings. To see what did well and what will I do next year?? I change my annual plantings every year either to try new plants or new colours or both. I try to arrange them differently. Check plants at night with a flashlight to see what insects are devouring your plants. Once you determine what bugs you have, you can deal with them accordingly.
If you've been gardening for a few years now, you many find that some of your perennials are becoming overwhelming in size and spreading too far for your liking. You can dig up that clump after pruning it back in size, split the root ball in half, in quarters etc. then move them around the garden or give the to your neighbors. Some perennials need to be divided every 4-5 years. Just so they will produce the flowers that you expect. This division of plants is a revitalization, and lets them start anew.
I'm going back to the garden now to finish my glass of wine. I feel like I sometimes ramble on. If anyone reading this has any specific questions about gardening. Please send the to Ed the Club Newsletter Editor. He will forward them on to me.
See you in September, in the garden !!

Something to Say...
I like to think of myself as the "United Nations" of club drag queens. I put a lot of work into my performances, give it 150% and then I'm outta there. When asked to support the club by doing shows, fund raisers, producing and directing and supporting the other queens... I am also there. Getting involved in drama and politics is not my thing.
Recent events have drawn me reluctantly into club drama. The whole "he said, she said" thing that always results in negativity for everyone involved. For this reason, I decided to take a break for the summer... providing a little distance and time for reflection. Aside from supporting Queen Ruby in a recent show, I made the decision to take the summer off. Reflecting I have done... The fact of the matter is that by the very nature of our non-profit organization and huge diversity of its members.... some strife and conflict is to be expected. Not everyone is going to be able to agree on all issues, nor should that be a goal of our organization. Instead, our goal should always be the open forum for opinion and peaceful resolution of conflict. I do not believe there is a single person involved with the club that does not have the club's best interest at heart. We all just view what that interest should look like, from a different perspective. Let us not forget that any conflict that does exist is really around very minor issues; how this should be done, who gets paid what, where club dollars should be forwarded. We need to ensure that we do not get ourselves immersed in such unimportant conflict. We can't allow these small disagreements to get in the way of the common goals we all have. Everyone agrees that the club is a place for all to feel safe and comfortable. Everyone agrees that the club is one of inclusivity, to service a very wide range of people that exist in our community. We must not lose sight of these commonalities that bind all of us together. Lets face it, we are a VERY strong community. While the small strife and friction exists and we thrive on the drama and theater... when push comes to shove - we always unite. When one individual is in need or crisis, we are all there. This I have total confidence and take great pride in. So lets put it all back into perspective... will conflict continue? Of course it will. I also take such great comfort in the fact that irrelevant of our trivial differences... when all of the cards are down - every member of our community will be there to help out. That is what makes Club 717 such an awesome place to be!
There ya have it...

History of a Queen - Ebony
Ebony started back in 1997 as a joke. My first performance ever at club 717 happened to fall on Halloween and I did not wear a costume.
I met 2 girls...(at the time I thought they were girls) who asked me where my costume was. I laughed, I said it was my first time here and I wasn't sure if I should wear one. Next thing I knew after a few drink they had me in the drag room putting make up on me.
I remember being so scared. When they were finished I turned around and faced the mirror... laughed my ass off with the sight of myself. I thought " I'm Hot" lol. The girls asked what I wanted my name to be... something in me said Ebony.
A few weeks later I was entered in the new talent show and won. That night I meet Ms. D. who asked me if I wanted to do a show with her. Everything happened so fast. I was booking almost every week after that and I was loving every minute of it.
Ebony became my alter ego, she could do and say things that I myself not in make up would never do. A year later I won my crown as Queen of 717 at the age of 18.
It's been awhile since I've performed at Club 717. You can see me on Friday August 28th with my dear friend Chardonnay.
Until then, have a great month!!

"LeatherFolk" - by Mike Childerhose
The Inner Experience Even though the leather phenomenon is growing ever more popular, it's psychology has been all but ignored. Few observers have delved beyond the broad pathological meanings, the hoary clichés, that have been projected onto variant sexuality. In truth, most people don't want to see the inner reality of radical sexual practice. Outsiders are made uncomfortable by the notion of S/M because it carries with it all that has been kept repressed and shadowy inside. It is an unacknowledged waste dump for the psyche's ills and discontents. Saying this does not make radical sexuality bad; only the hypocrisy and lack of consciousness about it is. As many leatherfolk well understand, rather than keeping parts of the psyche distant and detached, S/M can serve deep spiritual needs for wholeness and completion. In the broader sense, radical sex practice is about the exploration of eros. Being playful with sexuality - entertaining our fantasies, enriching our lives with pleasure - is an essential freedom. The look, scent, and feel of black leather sexualizes everything it comes in contact with. Liberating erotic potential from the dour puritanical ethics that still rule our culture and our libidos is prerequisite to establishing a more sane and forgiving society. S/M practice, composed of highly potent sexual games, increases awareness about ourselves and others. It is not unusual to find leatherfolk who are members of the clergy or the New Age movement, or who have explored psychoanalysis or various recovery programs. In short, many of us are in some way seriously committed to personal and social change. From an inner perspective, then, S/M play is about healing the wounds that keep us from fully living; its intensity cauterizes our hurt and mends our shame. Radical sexuality helps to clear out the psychic basement, that place deep within where things that trouble us most are kept hidden. Long-held feelings of inferiority or low self-esteem, grief and loss, familiar rejection and abandonment, come to surface during S/M ritual. These extreme sensual acts undo memories of the past and thus provide passage between the unconscious underworld and the above-world of realization and present light.

Until next time, please play safe and be happy. Yours In Brotherhood Mike Childerhose I would like to acknowledge the book, "Leatherfolk" for providing many of the details in the above. |
