Joke of the Month
An elderly couple was watching a Discovery Channel special about a West African bush tribe whose men all had penises 24 inches long. When the black male reaches a certain age, a string is tied around his penis and on the other end is a weight. After a while, the weight stretches the penis to 24 inches. Later that evening, as the husband was getting out of the shower, his wife looked at him and said, "How about you trying the African string-and-weight procedure?" The husband agreed and they tied a string and a weight to his penis. A few days later, the wife asked the husband, "How is our little tribal experiment coming along?" "Well, it looks like we're about half way there," he replied. "Wow ! . . . You mean it's grown to 12 inches?" "No, it's turned black."

From the President
Happy Belated Pride everyone! Well now that the biggest time of our calendar year is over, it is time to get steam rolling ahead. Pride was a Blast as usual and very busy. There were several good shows in June and everyone was busy getting Pride preparations in order. Now the BBQ season is in full swing and good luck trying to keep off the summer pounds ! We have a G.M.M. coming up this month so keep your eyes out for that one. It is the final G.M.M. for some Board Members, but we do still have an Annual general meeting to go. October will be here before we know it!! Michelle Ross will be at the Club Performing on July 17th with Miss Chardonnay. There will be a special Toronto performer in August as well. Have a great month, Regards Danny danny@club717.ca |
| Special Thank You Message - Pride 2009
Hello Everybody;
I just want to thank you all from the bottom my heart for all the support I had for the pride parade.
Let me start; Richard for taking my idea and helping with the design and sewing and all those days you helped build the float.
Larry and Charlie for working with me side by side. Now I know what it is like to have friends like you guys. Thanks for all the help and being in the parade (smile we were on CP24).
Mike/Michel your help was amazing from all the pipe bending and cutting to the fantastic music equipment you supplied.
Garrett your support of my rein this year has been shown throughout all the special productions. Thank you for marshaling and helping those drag queens get dressed during the parade.
John L. many thanks for supplying the float and finding such a great couple with a truck to haul us old demanding Queens around.
I don't have an e-mail address for Gary and Tina but maybe you could pass on my thanks.
Danny for organizing and getting all those freezie's and coolers. Special thanks to everyone that lent their coolers for the event
The crowd was really enjoying the freezies !! They were all wanting one of them. It was great fun throwing them.
Rob for supplying the generator.
Kelly thanks for being on the float and representing the great King's of club 717.
Lynz you were great with the music and all I can say is what a body in that leather.
Jean Guy thank you for showing up in the rain and your help putting the float together.
All and all I just want to thank everybody who helped out to make this year's parade such a great success.
Regards Pat (a.k.a Queen Ruby) |
Queen Ruby's Report
Happy Pride Everybody;
It was a week from hell trying to get everything in order for the pride parade. Thanks to my wonderful helpers Charlie (Queen Mom Madge), Larry (Edna), Richard (Twiggy) and Mike (Michel). I don't know what I would have done without these wonderful guys building the float. There are also those behind the scene getting the truck, generator and DJ. I wore my pride dress on June 19th. I think my choice was the right one since I heard many good comments. The month of June has stressed me out of my mind, so if I flew off the handle to anybody, I do apologize. My sanity is just around the corner.
The shows last month were just as good as ever. We started out with the production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I have to thank Savanaugh, Madge and Edna for all those long hours of practice. Then we let the Kings take over with Tommi and her fellow performers, they did an fantastic show. Then the open fundraiser show for the club for Pride float. As always, I need to give thanks for those performers who came out and made the show such a success (Ineeda tip, Veronica, Queen Mom Madge and Edna).
On behalf of the performers, I need to apologize for canceling the Mamma Mia show. Since the month of June was just packed full of things to do, all of us just got to worn out. Don't worry, I'll try and talk them in to a Fall show. A special thank you goes out to Savanaugh and Ineeda Tip for their pride weekend show. They put a lot of work into it and it showed !!!
That's it for now and remember, If you see me at the club remember come over slap my tits and say HI.
Queen Ruby

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie
A GARDEN FROM SCRATCH
ENVISION YOUR GARDEN - Part 2
ENGLISH STYLE GARDENING
After the article last month on Garden Design, I was going to continue with that process. However, when prompted to talk about English Gardens, off the top of my head was the 20th Century English garden design. So I did a bit of research to give you a history of the English Garden and that brings me to the design elements I wanted to speak of. So here goes !!!
Back in the ROMAN BRITAIN days gardens consisted of formal low hedges, dividing great expanses of lawn so that people could play tennis and lawn bowling. Those were the social activities at the time, in the garden, and the castle gardens and some large estate homes had these to entertain their friends and families. In MEDIEVAL TIMES gardens were on the small side and enclosed with hedges and or fences to keep out the deer and cattle. People just wanted to be safe and protected. Then when the TUDORS came along, they adopted the ideas of hedges and walls, but made them much more ornate. Hedges were of boxwood clipped into intricate shapes and very low were planted to form KNOT GARDENS - hedges laid out in intricate patterns and enclosed shapes. Within these enclosed shapes were planted flowers or shrubs or herbs, or a combination of them all. If you are stumped for a garden design, just look at some herb garden designs and adapt them to your likes and needs. You can adapt a part of a design, making it larger and fill in with the plants or garden artifacts that you so choose. When the STUARTS arrived on the scene, gardens became much more formal with rectangles, circles and intricate patterns and more diverse plant material was used, as England became more worldly. SUNDIALS, STATUES, BIRD BATHS, BENCHES AND ARBOURS would be found in these gardens. Then the GEORGIAN ERA moved in. Informal landscaping with very open parkland. Large expanses of lawn with GROTTOES AND FAKE RUINS, placed somewhere in the distance. Hedges are GONE. Then in the VICTORIAN ERA, bedding plants became the flavour of the day. Greenhouses and Conservatories were prominent, so tender plants could be wintered indoors. Public gardens became very colourful and intricate with the wide variety of plants available. Although these flower beds could be very formal and contrived, there was also a trend to more wild garden looks, with no clipping, staking which leads into the 20th century. Perennials with various season of bloom are planted somewhat randomly, but still planned to create an interesting garden with various heights, colours and season of bloom.
And finally the 20th CENTURY ENGLISH GARDEN DESIGN, is a mixture of many styles of herbaceous borders--------- the cottage garden with its profusion of flowers, informally planted and yet the formal more manicured garden fits into this also.
Now that you have this info, you can look around the City of Oshawa and see these English Styles for yourself. PARKWOOD ESTATES contains many of these styles, because of all the hedging, expanse of lawn, enclosed gardens, statues, grottoes, etc. The north end of City Hall in Oshawa is sort of Victorian in nature, with the formal layout of beds and the formal layout of the plant material. There is a round bed there which is more informal, but that fits into the Victorian style also. The PEONY GARDENS, at the Valleyview Garden, beside the CHILDREN'S ARENA, is more 20th Century, a formal layout with a profusion of flowers. There is also a CARPET BED ON LOCATION, which says OVBG, OSHAWA VALLEY BOTANICAL GARDEN, SPELT OUT WITH PLANT MATERIAL.
DOWNTOWN OSHAWA, with its planters and hanging baskets is more ENGLISH STUART, in nature because of the formality. MEMORIAL PARK is more 20th Century with some STUART influence with the statues and some low boxwood hedging.
Gardening style is a matter of preference, and you may mix many styles and periods. It's all about what you LIKE. So, if you happen to have a garden bench and a bird bath at home and are just starting a garden------maybe a small garden surrounded with boxwood hedge, a birdbath in the middle and some choice perennials or annuals. If you want to change it up every year, and place that bench nearby with maybe a tree for some shade, and a place for the birds to perch and you have the start of "YOUR GARDEN".
TILL THE NEXT TIME!!

Something to Say...
What a week of fabulous fun... Pride week never disappoints as the naked bodies painted in vibrant colours hit the streets.
Beyond the commercialism and blatant self-indulgence continues to lie a message. Remember the old cry "We're here, we're queer, get used to it?" Seems like such a far distance away from the spectacle of Yonge Street at the infamous parade.
At first glance, it appears a spectacle and party, but look closely and you will still see a social/political movement. While the days of Stonewall protest may have ended, the need for the movement continues. Ask any member of the LGBTQ community and they will be able to tell their own stories of discrimination and hate. There continues to be significant institutional homophobia in our society and the reality is that individuals in our community still continue to be victims. Only recently, my rainbow license plate cover was destroyed as well as personal items on my property. Two or three young guys screamed back hate at my husband and I as we confronted the vandals. Even after years of work anti-homophobic work within our community and knowing very well the hate statistics, I can't believe the feeling of insecurity the incident left both of us with. It was my gentle reminder that there is still work to be done.
So as I proudly Marshalled our Club 717 float at the parade this year, I couldn't help but to notice the eye contact with many of the old folks like myself in the crowd. Eye contact was made on many occasions and while there was significant pride and celebration, there was also a sense of purpose. We knew why we were really here. It wasn't about naked bodies painted in vibrant colours... it was about basic humanity and making a difference in our community. Happy Pride everyone!
There ya have it...

"LeatherFolk" - by Mike Childerhose
My own personal experience with the Leather Scene goes back to the summer of 1979 when I attended my first Spearhead function. For those who are not familiar with Spearhead it is the oldest Leather/Denim Men Only Club in Canada and was formed in Toronto back in 1970. After my first event back in 1979, I attended most of their functions on a yearly basis and I became a member of Spearhead in 2000. I have made many friends and acquaintances over the years as well as enjoying the many functions they host during the year. As for Leather itself, I like the look, the feel and the smell. To me as a gay man, a man dressed in Leather is a real attraction and turn on but there are still those afraid of the unknown and what the culture is all about. Believe me there is nothing to be afraid of! Today, the leather community has a vital new sense of itself. Like a forest after a catastrophic fire, it has regrouped at a startling pace: Hundreds of leather-oriented groups and organizations, publications, and web sites exist around the world. Old questions and doubts about the legitimacy of the leather experience have changed as well. A once secret and highly codified domain is now a widely adopted lifestyle choice as past private preferences of a few become practiced by many. Meanwhile, ongoing classes, conferences, and contests pertaining to leather sexuality further enhance our understanding and acceptance of erotic difference. Men in black leather - and into all that it implies - have been a visible part of the urban scene for the past 50 years. Immediately after World War ll, a loose-knit fraternity of men who recognized themselves as social outcasts began to organize. Some were emotionally wounded veterans, others deeply felt the rejections of a homophobic society. But whatever the reason for their displacement, these queer and flagrant loners took to the road together. Marlon Brando in "The Wild One" might have been the first rebel on a bike to roar into the American psyche, but it was the gay Leathermen of the time who really cut the archetypal mold of sexual outlaw. By 1954 the first gay motorcycle club, the Satyrs, had formed in the United States, not surprisingly in Southern California. Los Angeles has been a seedbed for much that now exists in the gay community, including the Mattachine Society, the first gay political organization in the nation. It is worth noting that when the founding circle of Mattachine split apart, two of its members went on to join the Satyrs. Leathermen have played an important role in the modern gay movement from its very beginnings. Other groups of gay bikers on the West Coast soon followed: the Oedipus in Los Angeles, the Warlocks and California Motorcycle Club in San Francisco. Within another decade dozens of other clubs had formed across the country: the Pocono Warriors, the Vanguards, the Rocky Mountaineers, the Centurians, the Serpents, the Thunderbolts, the Barbary Coasters, the Cheaters, the Wheels. These names speak volumes. A new type of community, one based on intense masculine sexuality and the fulfillment of previously unmet need, was created. This audacious escape from prevailing norms defined the leather image in the '50s and '60s. And along with this newfound freedom came further liberation from sexual taboos. While not everyone associated with these early clubs had an interest in sadomasochism, they provided a welcoming space for men who did. The heavy leather garb of the biker (dictated by reasons of safety as much as anything else) became synonymous with the overt masculine attributes of its wearers. It was only natural, then, for S/M code and ritual to be informed by the lore of these black-jacketed riders. But in time, groups solely devoted to gay male S/M practice were organized. The Chicago Hellfire Club was founded in 1971, with similar organizations starting about a decade later in San Francisco, New York, Vancouver, and Los Angeles. The concerns of lesbian and non-gay sadomasochists were also articulated during the 1970s, and new groups were formed to meet their needs. Other changes began to surface as well. By the late 1970s, what had once been clinically labelled as sadomasochism was often referred to as "sensuality and mutuality." This reclaiming of a basic definition further marked a growing positivism and sense of activism in the far-ranging leather community. Increasingly, people came out of a "leather closet" with enhanced feelings of pride and responsibility to others. The redefinition of S/M was extended even further by some in the late '80s to mean "sex magic." Now, an even more sophisticated awareness, one embracing spirituality and sexuality together, was put forth. Today, there are over 500 motorcycle clubs leather groups, and S/M activist organizations around the world, the majority in the United States. Over time, the domain of a few has been made accessible to many. In other ways, too, private signs have been deciphered and assimilated into the mass-culture marketplace. Such distribution of content and form is perhaps an inevitable part of the American process. Still, as wary as some might be about such appropriation, the gut integrity of leather sensibility has not necessarily been betrayed. For beneath the surface lies a deeper reality that resists co-optation. What links the authentic leather world together is an up-front sexual attitude. True leatherfolk see black leather not as stylish affectation but rather as a still daring symbol of cultural transgression and personal transformation. Whether one chooses to wear leather is not the point; it's the intentions beneath the fashion that count. And the urge is to push personal and public boundaries on the sexual frontier as far as they will go. Whether found through fiery communion with a lover or discovered in a sexy postmodern milieu, radical sexual experience is a triumphant reminder to live in the Now. It is that passionate, inexplicable, and fierce commitment to life - in all of its immediacy and wonder - that unites our voices. Until next time, please play safe and be happy! Yours In Brotherhood Mike Childerhose I would like to acknowledge the book, "Leatherfolk" for providing many of the details in the above. |
