Quote of the Month
A little known fact....
The first testicular guard "Cup" was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. It took 100 years for men to realize that the brain is also important.
Joke of the Month
My flight was being served by an obviously gay flight attendant, who seemed to put everyone in a good mood as he served us food and drinks.
As the plane prepared to descend, he came swishing down the aisle and told us that 'Captain Marvey has asked me to announce that he'll be landing the big scary plane shortly, so lovely people, if you could just put your trays up, that would be super.'
On his trip back up the aisle, he noticed this well-dressed and rather Arabic looking woman hadn't moved a muscle. 'Perhaps you didn't hear me over those big brute engines, but I asked you to raise your trazy-poo, so the main man can pitty-pat us on the ground.'
She calmly turned her head and said, 'In my country, I am called a Princess and I take orders from no one.'
To which the flight attendant replied , without missing a beat, 'Well, sweet-cheeks, in my country I'm called a Queen, so I outrank you. Tray -up, Bitch'

President's Message
Greetings Everyone. I hope all of you are enjoying this fine Spring weather! (Not). It seems like we are going to have a not so fantastic spring and summer based on what we have had to date. No I will not be having another Tropical Rain Forest Party this year!! (lol) Anyway, I do not have a huge report this month but would like to let everyone know, we have once again brought back Karaoke at the Club on the last Thursday of each month. This is in part because we have patrons who ask for it. Please come out on a Thursday and lend your support. We are doing things to entertain you and things that YOU'VE REQUESTED !!!, then no one comes out to support these events. They end up cancelled and then people ask why we no longer have these. No support means, we cannot continue to pay out for these events that no one is attending!!! These nights can be a lot of fun and at times are quite a hoot. If we can get some regular attendance, we would consider looking at some sort of a competition. Possibly, prizes as well. Things coming up in the very near future are interesting. There will soon be a full swing Pride momentum building up and I am glad to see there will be a repeat performance of Mamma Mia in June. I would like to report. that the last couple of years has seen our community really coming back together, as it should be. I am glad to know this year Club 717 will be hosting the Pride Durham evening party after the days activities at Heydonshore. There will be food and snacks provided as well as entertainment that evening. For those attending, be at the Club early as space is limited. These kind of community events fill up FAST !! Also with June starting, it is also BBQ season and the Club. June is were we start our monthly Pot Luck BBQ's. These are excellent and fun gatherings. We have some amazing chef's !!!! Doors open at 4pm and dinner starts at 5pm. They are on the 3rd Sunday of each month (except this month will be June 14th). COME HUNGRY !!!!. Also, it is the time of year where people have their annual back yard BBQ's so everyone will be pretty busy for the next while. I myself be having my big blast this year but rather will be dividing it into a couple of smaller parties. There will be a "Staff Appreciation BBQ" held which will mean there will be one Sunday during the Summer where the Club will be closed. So we can thank our staff and volunteers. Our staff and volunteers work hard every week and allot goes on behind the scenes to make Club 717 a fun place. Show them your support and tip generously at the bar. Anyway I am sorry I have not been around as much lately but I am getting better health wise. I will soon be back on my feet and like a bad fungus, you will not be able to get rid of me!!!! Enjoy the rest while you can!! LOL !!!!!! That is all for now and you will hear from me again soon!! Regards and all the Best Danny

Queen Ruby's Report
Happy Pride Everyone, As always, I need to thank everyone who performed during the month of May. This is a busy time for the Club and Queen. We have started the float for the Pride Parade. We have been working on Sundays to get it ready. We painted last Sunday and now I need to go and get material to finish it off. Thanks for everybody who is helping get it ready. As you can see from the posters at the Club, we are starting off June with a real "KICK" !! A special production "Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.
June 5 - Priscilla: Queen of the desert June 12 - The club King's are giving their all for pride June 19 - Is a fundraiser for "Club 717 Pride Parade" and I am adding in my Birthday show (Another year for the old girl) June 26 - Savauangh and new comer "I Need A Tip" is performing for the pride weekend June 28 - The Toronto pride parade. Come out and "Walk with Club 717". I just got a call to come and pick up my Pride dress. Hope it will still fit as I have been adding a few unwanted pounds. So I will once again start my diet.
As I said before, I want to thank everyone who has given me support and their time to make this pride month. We want to ensure that the parade is a success for myself (Queen Ruby), and everyone at Club 717.
I know everybody will not want to miss any of the performances during June. It's sure to be a party month! Hope to see everybody in June. I'm at the Club on Friday's whether performing or not, so If you see me, "Come over slap my Tits and say Hi !!!!!

From the DJ Booth
Hi Folks, I would first like to say thank you for those who came to the "Hyde Out in Leather" night! It was a fantastic success as we raised $350 for the Durham Aids Committee! GOOD JOB! I had a fantastic time spinning those down and dirty beats for everyone and with the new lights we had a fantastic light show to go along with the music! I'm really thankful for DJ'ing for you at the club. I have expanded my skills each time I play. I have fun and bring that energy to you. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a fantastic Pride week in June! Toronto Pride is coming up and I've volunteered to DJ for one of the non profit floats since money is always tight with them. So if you're there, keep an eye out for the beats coming from both the Club's float and the one I will be on. It's gonna be great times! Sincerely; DJ Gryphyn

Friends and Community Members of Durham and PFLAG Canada...
It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of one of PFLAG Canada's own, Lindsey Clarke of Oshawa, Ontario.
Lindsey died in hospital on May 27th with family by her side. She was only 38 years old.
Lindsey had a passion for people and in particular, the LGBTQ community. As an ally, she dedicated many hours in support of diversity and equality initiatives. She found her place among friends and colleagues in the rainbow community, though she sometimes joked that it made it hard for her to get a date.
Lindsey was a co-founder of PFLAG Canada - Durham Chapter and has been actively involved since 2003. She stood tall and proud for the community, speaking out on issues of homophobia and inspiring change in schools and throughout all of Durham Region. Lindsey was a former PFLAG Canada National Board Member, and at the time of her death held positions as PFLAG Canada Regional Coordinator, Communities Involved Committee Member and Durham Chapter Leader.
A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on June 8th at McIntosh-Anderson Funeral Home, 152 King Street East, Oshawa. Family and friends are encouraged to arrive anytime after 1:30 PM. Lindsey's obituary can be viewed online at: http://www.mcintosh-anderson.com/view/dsp_obituary.cfm.
I ask that you keep her family in your thoughts and prayers at this time. As Lindsey was so young, family and close friends are experiencing tremendous grief with her passing. PFLAG Canada was Lindsey's charity, her life and passion. She spent the last six years committed to the organization's cores values, creating a more open and accepting society for LGBTQ people and their families and friends.
We will miss Lindsey dearly and will honour her memory by continuing her work, encouraging understanding of sexual and gender diversity in Durham Region. Jayme Harper Regional Director- Ontario

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie
A GARDEN FROM SCRATCH
ENVISION YOUR GARDEN
Decide what you want. Do you want to relax, entertain, be pet friendly- how are you going to spend your time outside and when.
Determine sun and shade in the garden: these answers will help with the design and the plants that can live in your space. I moved into a house that had a huge patio, some grass and a cedar hedge. With all the boxes I unpacked, I went out into the garden with the broken down and flat boxes and formed a huge areas that bordered the hedge. It was triangular in shape with curves as opposed to straight edges. Then I purchased a truckload of triple mix, placed this on top of the boxes laid on the grass, and I had an instant bed to plant in. The triple mix was about 8 - 12 inches in height. I did not have to worry about the soil condition because I supplied the good base to plant in. I planted a few shrubs and perennials, leaving spaces for them to mature, and filled in with annuals, for colour. As the garden grew, my planting of annuals became less, and I was able to split perennials in a few years to place in other parts of the garden.
SOIL - Soil is critical and regardless of what type you have, sand, clay, acidic or alkaline. By adding compost, topsoil or triple mix, it will greatly improve it making your plants thrive.
LAYER YOUR GARDEN - Trees form the backbone of your plantings. Always check the plant information labels to see the mature size of the plant material. That 2 foot spruce you plant today, will be 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide in 20 years. For our city size lots, I would choose small columnar trees, shrubs with coloured bark and berries to give year round interest.
REPETITION - Repeating plant material throughout the garden, creates a sense of balance and unity. But like most people, you probably like variety. Therefore, when purchasing, buy plant material in numbers of 3, 5 , 7 and so on. Odd numbers always seem to work well. Planting in groups of 3, 2 in back, 1 in front, creates a more three dimensional effect; in fact you could buy the same plant in 3 different sizes and plant in a group with tallest in the back. 3 or more plants give you a much bigger impact plus that dimension.
Gardens are forever growing and changing with the seasons. If you have some plants in an areas that do not seem to be doing well, dig them up and move them to a new location - more sun - more shade - more water.
THE MASTER PLAN I like to start off with a scale diagram on paper with all the existing elements in the garden. You need to know how much planting space you have and what the sun and soil condition is. Then you add your new elements- walkways-ponds-butterfly garden-herb garden-vegetable garden-rose garden-sheds-gazebos-fences-rocks-etc. Then you pick your priorities and start with that. You may accomplish one project per year over many years, or do two or three. You should always start with the big stuff first - walkways, decks, patios, big trees, sheds, fences - these are the bones of the garden . Then everything that is added after is to enhance those bones.
A garden is never finished. Even after 11 years in my garden, I still make changes and move things around.
CHARLIE

Something to Say...
My alter-ego has worked extensively in the community supporting gay and lesbian youth for years now. Great strides have been made in our public schools system around acknowledging the difficult plight that continues for our LGBTQ youth. Just eight years ago, teacher's jobs were potentially in jeopardy for even chatting about starting gay/straight alliances in our schools. Posters supporting the National Day Against Homophobia were removed by administrators in our high schools. Some trustees were interpreting teacher efforts to support LGBTQ youth as "recruiting homosexuals". In just eight years, so much has changed. There are now gay/straight alliances operating in most of our high schools. Teachers and staff are being in-serviced on LGBTQ issues and now the "International Day for the Elimination of Racism" has been acknowledged and celebrated. The recent Pride Prom only further illustrates how far we have come in only eight short years. The recent PFLAG awards here in Durham and the huge advancements in education, have left me slightly complacent. It took a recent event while speaking at a more "rural" school to make me realize once again, the need to fight is not over.
"There are no gay students at our school".... "I won't have homosexuals converting my son/daughter".... were echoed throughout the halls as I recently presented to classes at this predominantly rural high school. Amongst over-tones of protest, folded arms and parental complaints, I pushed through delivering my message of respect, inclusiveness and human rights. While I certainly left feeling much more discouraged than entering the building... I also left with a newly invigorated drive to continue.
We live in a bubble within our gay community and now even in our city. Travel just slightly outside and the reality is cruel and harsh. The difficulties faced by our LGBTQ youth continue as strong as ever. Complacency can not happen... and will not happen for this alter-ego.
There ya have it...
Savanaugh had something to say! |
