Joke of the Month
A father and son went hunting together for the first time. The father said: 'Stay here and be very QUIET. I'll be across the field.' A while later the father heard a blood curdling scream and ran back to his son. 'What's wrong?' the father asked. 'I told you to be quiet.' The boy,Out of Sorts, bless his heart, answered; 'Look Pa, I was quiet when the snake slithered across my feet. I was quiet when the bear breathed down my neck. I didn't move a muscle when the skunk climbed over my shoulder. I closed my eyes and held my breath when the wasp stung me. I didn't cough when I swallowed the gnat. I didn't cuss or scratch when the poison oak started itching. But when the two squirrels crawled up my pants legs and said, 'Should we eat them here or take them with us? That Did it:

 Greetings!
April was tough on many of our members. Family & friend's illnesses and death have been in all of our hearts and minds.
April reminded me of just how precious all of you, and my family are to me. "Listen passionately, Love hard and lend a hand to a friend in need, cause you never know when you'll need it back !!"
Now, to help continue to pick up everyone's spirits, the Club has some amazing productions and "Out of Town" talent scheduled for this month. Get out, enjoy the amazing weather and come see us down at the Club !! Have a great month !!!

President's Message
Hello Everyone, Donna is going to be writing an article this month as I am taking a rest. I do however want to extend my personal Thanks to everyone for your well wishes on a speedy recovery. I am home and resting and hope to be back up and going again very soon, just taking a few "me" weeks to rest. All is going good right now. The doctors seem to think that the stents that they put in should do the trick. I do really have to clamp down and change my lifestyle somewhat, which means a lot less drinking and bad eating habits. So I will be around, just not as many shooters or shots for a while. Again thank you all sincerely from my heart !! Regards and all the Best Danny

Vice President's Message
Hello,
I would like to thank everyone for coming out to the recent General Membership meeting and wish more members would come to these. This way we as the board could get your input on the things you want to see happen at the club.
An update on Danny's recovery; he is doing better and getting back on his feet. We all wish him well and we miss seeing his smiling face and jokes that make our long Board Meetings more enjoyable and hope he is back soon. As acting president it sucks that I can't vote!! COME BACK DANNY WE MISS YOU !!!! Lots of events are coming up: Award's Night for people that have gone above and beyond helping our community, Leather night, Queen Ruby is looking for volunteers for the pride float and decorating, Fundraiser for Aids Durham, Fundraiser for pride float, last Pot Luck which is vegetarian, BBQ season is in place of the Pot Lucks for the summer months, Karaoke is back once a month. This is just to name a just a few ;) I would like to thank everyone that puts their time and energy into the Club to help us make the club what it is today and to help us keep it a safe and fun place to be.
I myself have been an active member for about 8 years now and on the Board for 4 of those years. 3 being VP and knowing that we have a place to go and be ourselves is very important. I am so glad that we have that. I also work at the club as a volunteer and love to see old and new faces when I am there. It is a pleasure to work with the existing Board. We all seem to want the same things for the Club and are working hard to do that for our members. Last month was a success and hope everyone keeps coming in and helping us do this each and every month. Regards and all the Best Donna

Queen Ruby's Report
Hello Club 717;
I can not believe how fast the months are going by. This month I registered the Club for the pride parade, and June is just around the corner, so I hope I can count on your support so we can have the best float in the parade. The theme for the float is "Priscilla Queen of the Desert", so we are going to try and convert the trailer into a BUS. I am having a meeting on May 3rd at 2:00 pm to start the plans. All are welcome, so if you have some talent in design or carpentry come on out, do I have a brush and hammer for you !!
Once again, I must thank all the performers for a job well done in April. We started off the month with the return of the new talent competitors, then leaped into "let us eat fish". We had birthday girls (an old and young one) sorry Edna and finally Lauren. May is not going to be any less entertaining. We start off May 1st with the Durham Aid's Committee Fundraiser. The performers are donating their wages to this worthy cause and the club will match this amount. So to all performers out there, you are welcome to participate just bring 2 numbers and be ready to shake your booty. The show starts at 10:30, so please be there at least 10:00 so we can organize the Queen's and King's. We then celebrate Lauren Lovelace's birthday on May 8th and she is bringing in 2 special guests, Empress 22 Tiffany and Empress 6 Michelle from Toronto. Savanaugh is bringing back Twiggy and Chardonnay on May 15th. On May 22, I will hold a beach party with Queen Mom Madge, Twiggy and Billy for fun in the sun and sand. Finally, on May 29th we are having Queen Mom Madge performing with a special guest Robin Loren from Toronto. So, as you can see it is a fun packed month.
A little heads up for June which is Pride month. June 5th this the Pride kickoff with the production of "Priscilla Queen of the Desert". This is a fundraiser for the pride parade. June 12 Tommi will be bring in the King's for their pride kickoff. June 19th is going to be the pride open show and Ruby must show off her pride dress which is being made as we read. Also, I have to admit it is another old girls (Ruby) birthday. Finally, June 26 Savanaugh will be there to entertain the club. So as you can see we are going to be busy girls and boys over the next 2 months.
Well, I'll shut my month. OK!!!!!! So as you know I am there on Fridays so cum over slap my 'TITS' and say HI.......

This month's feature: LIVINGSTONE RENOVATIONS & HOME INSPECTIONS.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Barry Livingstone, General Contractor & Home Inspector. Livingstone Renovation & Home Inspection is located @ 519 Muirfield Drive, Oshawa, ON L1J 8E3. The office phone # is 905 725-0469. Hours of operation are: Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feel free to contact Barry @ his email address: bazzle_05@hotmail.com There is no website yet.
Barry Livingstone, General Contractor & Home Inspector, opened his business in September 2006. Prior to that he was employed for 4 years in the Kitchener area where he was part of a 10 man crew building custom split log buildings. Barry took the home inspection course at Conestoga College in Kitchener. This is a 2 year program. This course makes him certified which is very important today. He has a background in both interior & exterior ground up restorations. As a general contractor Barry does work from start to finish on interiors (e.g. complete kitchen reno's, bathrooms, recreation rooms & basements etc.). Exterior work includes such items as decks, sidings, fencing, windows & doors. Also he does painting. He is quite comfortable & professional in working with his clients. He will even assist them in helping to make their choices of materials etc. by offering suggestions.
Barry offers very competive rates. For example, his home inspection fee is only $325.00. Please be aware that there may be some who do this work for less than that amount but they are not "certified" like Barry. Please call Barry's office @ 905 725-0469 for an appointment for your home inspection needs. For your home renovations & painting services Barry offers free quotes for all estimates. If you choose Barry & his company what you pay is "COST (LABOUR) Plus MATERIALS". When asked how his business is generated Barry replied that when he moved to Oshawa approximately 3 years ago he started with just 1 customer & his business gradually grew through "word of mouth" & customers' testimonials. People complimented Barry on his expertise & quality of his craftsmanship in home renovations, painting & home inspections. Barry's business has blossomed & grown. Today the business is so successful that Barry is booked up for approximately 3 months (August '09).
Having Livingstone Renovation & Home Inspection as a gay owned & gay friendly business is great for our community. Barry is a good resource person for our members.
If you know of a gay &/or gay friendly business that would liked to be featured in this newsletter kindly contact me: cottageguy@rogers.com. Thank you.
Until next month enjoy the warmer spring weather now that May is finally here!

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie
AS YOU ALL KNOW, OR SOON WILL KNOW, THAT MANY OF YOUR FAVOURITE PESTICIDES, HERBICIDES AND FUNGICIDES ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THE PESTICIDE BAN HAS ARRIVED.
BUT THERE ARE GREEN PRODUCTS AVAILABLE IN THE STORES. MANY OF THESE GREEN PRODUCTS DO WORK. I FIND THAT YOU MUST REAPPLY MORE FREQUENTLY AS THEY TEND DEPLETE MORE QUICKLY WITH WEATHER CONDITIONS.
BUT THE KEY TO HAVING A HEALTHY GARDEN IS TO HAVE HEALTHY PLANTS GROWING IN AN ENRICHED SOIL.
FOR LAWNS - FERTILIZE SPRING AND FALL AND CUT YOUR LAWN AT 3 INCHES IN HEIGHT. THIS WILL CREATE A HEALTHY LAWN THAT WILL SMOTHER OUT WEEDS, REQUIRE LESS WATERING AND SHOULD REMAIN GREEN ALL SEASON. TOPDRESSING IN SPRING WITH COMPOST WILL HELP TO BUILD THE SOIL. IN AREAS WHERE THE LAWN IS THIN, YOU CAN OVERSEED IN SPRING, WHICH IS NOW AND AGAIN IN LATE AUGUST, EARLY SEPTEMBER.
FOR WEED KILLER, WE ARE CURRENTLY USING HORTICULTURAL VINEGAR. IT NEEDS TO BE APPLIED EVERY 3 OR 4 WEEKS. AND THEN THERE IS THE GOOD OLD FASHIONED HAND PULLING OF WEEDS, WHICH ACTUALLY WORKS QUITE WELL.
IN PERENNIAL AND SHRUB BEDS, AFTER YOU'VE DONE A THROUGHT WEEDING, A LAYER OF MULCH(BE IT WOOD CHIPS, COMPOST, ETC.) ABOUT 3 TO 4 INCHES IN THICKNESS, HELPS TO SUPPRESS WEEDS AND KEEP MOISTURE IN. AND AS IT DECOMPOSES, IT ADDS ORGANIC MATTER OR NUTIRIENTS TO YOUR SOIL. BY BUILDING YOUR SOIL WITH ORGANIC MATERIALS, YOU ARE SUPPLYING A HEALTHY SOIL FOR YOUR PLANTS TO GROW IN. ALSO A FERTILIZER IN SPRING HELPS TO GET YOUR PLANTS OFF TO A GOOD START.
FOR NEW BEDS OR PLANTING, I WOULD ADD A LOT OF ORGANIC MATERIAL TO THE SOIL AND DIG IT IN; THEN PLANT AND WATER THE PLANTS WELL;THEN MULCH TO KEEP THE WEEDS OUT AND THE MOISTURE IN.
SOAP SPRAYS MADE WITH IVORY DISH LIQUID SOAP OR PALMOLIVE AT 1 TO 2 TABLESPOONS PER GALLON OF WATER, WILL KILL A LOT OF INSECTS IF YOU ACTUALLY HIT THEM WITH THE SPRAY. THIS SPRAY WILL NOT KILL THE EGGS OF INSECTS, THEREFORE REPEAT APPLICATIONS TWICE PER WEEK SHOULD HELP TO ELIMINATE OR REDUCE THE INSECT POPULATION.
FOR SLUGS AND EARWIGS- BEER IN SMALL CONTAINERS LIKE SALMON OR TUNA TINS- FILLED WITH BEER, IF YOU CAN SPARE IT- OR YEAST AND SUGAR MIXED IN WATER AND FILL THE CANS, AND BURY THEM IN THE GARDEN UP TO THEIR RIMS- AND SLUGS AND EARWIGS WILL FO FOR A SWIM AND DROWN. YOU HAVE TO EMPTY THEM EVERY FEW DAYS AND MAKE FRESH ONES. AND IF YOU HAVE A DOG, THEY LIKE TO DRINK IT TOO!! SO BE CAREFUL. IT WON'T KILL THE DOG, BUT IT'S GROSS TO WATCH THEM LAP IT UP, BUGS AND ALL.!!!
PLANTING NATIVE PLANTS IN YOUR GARDEN IS A WISE MOVE, AS THEY HAVE BEEN GROWING IN ONTARIO FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS AND HAVE SURVIVED THE BUGS, THE SLUGS AND THE WEATHER. IMPORTED PLANTS ARE NOT AS HARDY IN ONTARIO.
ANYHOW, THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY FOR NOW. I WAS LATE WRITING THIS ARTICLE AND NEED TO SEND IT IN.
CHARLIE
THE PLANT GUY, WHO WILL ANSWER ANY QUIRES |

Something to Say...
The Dreaded Prom!
For those of us who remember all to well the closeted days of youth, we all can relate to this time of year and the dreaded prom decision. Are we going to go? Will we go alone? Are we going to ask our best friend to be our date? Or, as my hubbie resorted, taking his brother's girlfriend to Prom. Pit in anyone's stomach's now?
It used to be the symbol of heterosexuality - Prom Night! Well all of that is changing and I'm very excited to be a part of it! I couldn't believe when I heard the news... a Prom for our LGBTQ youth and on top of that, I was asked to host and perform at the event. Are you kidding me? A prom for all the butches and fairies out there and a drag performance to boot? Times they are a changin! Like everything else, the homo's are taking what is rightfully there's. We have seen so many changes around institutional heterosexism over the years such as gay marriage. After a significant amount of pressure and work, we have Gay/Straight Alliances in most of our high schools today. Now... a prom!
In planning a prom performance, it is amazing how many of our club patrons wanted to participate in assisting with this event. To live vicariously through these fortunate youth and be a part of a prom in some capacity. It got us all thinking, how many of us did not attend their own prom? Those who did, how many were forced into a night of heterosexuality and deceit?
A solution is in the works; our own Prom right here at Club 717. We are aiming for the fall. So, start thinking about which special someone will you take? What are you going to wear? Who amongst your peers would be King and Queen? Most importantly, will you get to third base that night? Oh how many club 717 patrons will lose their virginity at Prom this year? Definitely exciting times!
There you have it, Savanaugh had Something to Say. |
A Message from AIDS Durham
Dear Friends and Supporters, The AIDS Committee of Durham Region is hosting its annual AIDS Walk for Life in Oshawa on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009. We will be walking 5K from downtown Oshawa to Oshawa Centre and back to show our support for people living with HIV/AIDS and to raise awareness of the need to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. The AIDS Walk for Life has been a major fundraiser for us in the past, this year (as of this date) participation in the walk is down. We very much need the support of the community to help raise funds for local programs. While our core funding from the AIDS Bureau covers the agencies operational costs, funding for all our programs comes from fund raising events. The Walk for Life is one of those major fund raising events. During the past year our agency has seen a 30% increase in clients. We very much need the support of the community at this time. This year's prize for the individual who raises the most funds is a 2 Day Getaway at Bayview/Wildwood Resort in Port Severn (on Sparrow Lake) which includes one dinner and two breakfasts - a $600 value! If you or your group would like to help us and the community, please contact me for Pledge forms ASAP. Each pledge sheet has spaces for up to 12 sponsors. Just bring pledge sheets and funds to the Masonic Hall between 11AM and 12 Noon on Saturday May 2nd. Food will be available from noon to 1PM. Walk begins at 1PM. Come see the excellent videos about HIV/AIDS awareness from around the world, the silent auction, and all the fun! My apologies if you receive this email more than once. Please share this email with all your contacts. Thanks! Mark Hammann - Gay Men's Outreach Worker MSM@aidsdurham.com The AIDS Committee of Durham Region 22 King Street West Suite 202 Oshawa, Ontario L1H 1A3 (905) 576-1445 x15 |
