Wow, we had one hell of a month in March. I'd like to thank everyone for all their amazing help and numerous contributions of money, time, food and prize donations for our two fundraisers. Thank you to all our corporate sponsors and donors !!

I'd also like to say thank you to our amazing Entertainment team at Club 717. You really pulled out all the stops last month. Not only did you put in countless hours working on your performances but you also organized some really amazing fundraisers. The Farra N Hyte and Humane Society were both successful events for both the Club and the fundraiser recipients. Nice Job everyone !! and you know who you are !!!!

I'd personally like to thank everyone that supported, in any way, the Humane Society Fundraiser. I know it really meant allot to myself to see the generosity. Our community really is something to be reckoned with. Thank you !!

President's Message President - Danny

Happy Spring Everyone,

It has been a long, cold, snowy winter and thank god spring has finally arrived, at least on the Calendar.

Boy oh Boy, what a busy month March was. There are a few special "Thanks" that need to be sent. Kelly, Cathy, Donny, Jay, John and Ed, Thank You for all the work you did to make the fund raiser for Farra N Hyte a success. Your efforts showed off with the outcome of prizes and money raised for Farra N Hyte.

Club 717 Patrons all deserve a round of applause for coming out and supporting Farra when she is not one of our regular performers. Our little Club in Oshawa raised more money for Farra to compete in the Miss Continental Plus pageant in Chicago than any of the other Clubs that did fundraisers for her. So applause to you all! The big Prize was a 42 Inch Plasma H.D.T.V. which was one by none other then Jay, oh if ever you want to watch a good movie call me and I will give you their address, but I am not bitter :)

The Durham Humane Society also had a fundraiser. It was held the week following Farra's fundraiser and this was tied-in with our annual Mardis Gras event. Once again our patrons rose to the occasion, and this was enhanced by a special performance of Mamma Mia.

Thanks go out to all who performed and special thanks to Savanaugh, Ruby, Larry, John and Ed. The entire team busted their butts to get items to raffle off and worked hard all week to ensure the evening was a success. There was also all the people that contributed their time and food for the party. We raised more money for the Humane Society this year than we have in the past. I am sure that this is in part due to the fire that took the lives of over 180 animals in December 2008.

Now, the Club needs to take a bit of a break from fundraisers and special shows and get back to the regular shows for a little bit. This will enable us to focus our efforts on the next round of renovations at the Club.

We are going to finish the entrance by the women's bathrooms and then add some more lights and sound equipment. This has been approved and the Board will be working on this in the next couple of months. I am going to try and see if we can do something with the Men's Room too!.

Our next big event will be an awards evening held in the Club by PFlag and the Aids Committee of Durham. It will be held on May 9th. I am expecting that Jayme Harper, an amazing force in our Community, will be writing an article pertaining to this. Then our next item is Durham Pride and Toronto Pride. I am not going to go into detail on this, I will leave that up to our Entertainment team.

Our Club is doing quite well at this time and in spite of an economic downturn, we are not feeling the crunch at this time.

So that everyone is aware, we have set aside reserve funds for a couple of months operation in the bank to get us through any slow times that may come upon us. We are still able to renovate in small doses, not have the renovations really affect our financial position.

Till next time, that is it for me.

Have a great month and I will be writing to you again.

Regards
and all the Best
Danny

Reach for the Dream - by Kelly Club 717 Fundraiser for Farra N Hyte

I would like to start by thanking everyone that came out to the club on Saturday March 7th, for  Farra N Hyte's Continental Fundraiser. In total we managed to raise over $3,700.00

For those that may not know, in helping to support Farra in her quest for Miss Continental Plus over the Easter Weekend in Chicago, you are helping out a local performer.  She may perform in Toronto, however she is a huge fan of Club 717, and also resides in Whitby.

Finally for all my Thank you's.........

ˇ       The Board of Directors of Club 717 for Donating a 42" HDTV
ˇ       To all the people that donated prizes for the Raffle Draw
ˇ       Dreamers Café & Sweet Dreams
ˇ       The Staff of Club 717 that donated their wages
ˇ       Donny Potts, Jay Ingram, John Duvall, Ed and Cathy Gallant without your support and donations, I couldn't have organized the Fundraiser without you.

Finally I would like to also thank Farra N Hyte, for making the night a success for Club 717.

She also showed us all that with dedication, and support from Friends, you can Reach for your Dream!

Thank you,
Kelly Hummell

Queen Ruby's Report Queen Ruby

Another month is past already and this year is certainly going quickly.  I am planning to have a meeting on April 5th at 2:00 pm to discuss all the plans for the pride month and parade.  Everybody is welcome..
March was packed full of fun and fundraisers.  I just want to extend my thank you to all that help with donations and food for my charity event for the Durham Humane Society.  I must give a special thank you to Ed and John for all the hard work in gathering prizes and organizing the food for this special event.  I also want to thank the performers for putting in long hours of practice and for giving it all for a fabulous Mamma Mia show.  Also a thank you to the board for their support.  I heard so many great comments about this show and numerous requests to do it again.  So keep your ears open.

April is going to be a fun month so come out and support your Drag Queens and Kings at club 717.
April 3rd is bring back the new talent.
April 10th bring Good Friday the theme is LET THEM EAT FISH.
April 17th is Edna's 39th birthday again and again and again.
April 24th is Lauren Lovelace with new talent Joanne
Don't forget that May 1st is the Fundraiser of the Aid's Committee.  This is an open show so all performers are welcome.

I can not believe that Pride is upon us.  This week I went looking for my Pride dress.  I found a store that I think I can work with and get my dress.  I have until May 1st to pick the style (looking in magazines), order and get measured up so I can have it for the Pride events.  The one design I saw, I am going to attempt to make my own creation since I have been taking sewing courses (don't laugh).  I will start this creation soon and maybe it will work out for me.

I have also picked the theme for this year's Queen and King competition.  It is going to be "Hollywood."  So, pick your music and get ready to perform on November 7th.  If anybody needs help let me know.

I could go on talking and talking so I better rap up and leave some room in the newsletter for others.

Once again, thanks to everybody for supporting your Queen since this is helping make my year such a great time.

Remember I am at the club on Fridays, so come over slap my boobs and say Hi.

Your Queen Ruby

Thoughts on Saturday Nights - by DJ Gryphyn

DJ Gryphyn
I sit here wondering where to start on this article, thinking of the great music I have heard over the years, so I will start from the beginning.  This is of course, back when I first came out of the closet in the early 90's.  Club's were at their peak then.  I lived in Ottawa and one of my most memorable jobs was working at Club 363.  My job was to take the cover and ask for ID coming in the back door.   You see, back then the club had two entrances due to the potential of bashing back then.  One in the front and one in the back.
I worked there for about 2 years, and it was a fun and exciting time.  I got to listen to the best music coming out, meet new people and got paid for it.  Being that I worked in the club, I took every opportunity to ask the DJ's questions about music and on my off days would watch what they did.  Also back then, it was all done on vinyl records and Cd's were just starting to be used in the clubs so I got to see both.  Then one day the club owner approached me and asked if I would repaint the club for him and as a bonus he said I could practice on the DJ equipment and get paid!  So I spent 2 weeks after the club closed painting the club and for an hour or so after I finished in the morning would turn on the system and practice.  This of course peaked my interest in DJ'ing. But of course that dream would have to wait as DJ's could be found in every nook and cranny and so I didn't get my chance then.
After Club 363,  I moved on to Centertown Pub as a bus boy.  Different crowd, different music somewhat and more new people to meet and another DJ to become best friends with.  Like all clubs at that time, they were packed on a Saturday night.  Heck, they were packed Friday to Sunday.  I learned a lot about themes at Centertown Pub.  They had Country Line Dancing every 3rd Sunday.  Leather Nights, Fundraisers, etc.   They even did a Sunday afternoon T-Dance.  It was a great time to be had.
Since I have started with Club 717, I have idea after idea for the club on Saturdays which comes from my past experience in Ottawa. I mean let's face it, when was the last time you came on a Saturday and it was full of people!  So, I forwarded some idea's, one of which I believe everyone would like is a "Retro Saturday" where I'd play 80's and 90's music for you, which in turn would take you back to those fun memories of dancing and hanging out with friends and getting your groove on!
Another idea I have is for a Blue Ball, in which the club would be decked out in blue, (Balloons, Drapes, blue tea lights, blue drinks etc.) and patrons could wear blue and join in the festivities and dance the night away. These are just some ideas that come up for Saturday nights, and Saturdays do have potential let me tell you.  I have been working at 717 now for 3 months now and I have seen small crowds to a few people.  This could be a great night for everyone to come out.  However, I think we need a reason.  Good music?  Great priced Drinks?  We already have all this and yet the attendance isn't there.
So here is my question to everyone reading this.  What would make you come out on a Saturday night?  Would a Retro Night be your thing?  Would a dance to raise money for your favorite charity float your boat?  How about a Line Dancing Night on a Saturday night? I would like to hear from you and let me know what you would like for a Saturday night? Feel free to email me and let me know!.
I spin on a few Saturdays a month and as I have said, Saturdays should be bouncing!  So tell me what would make you bounce on a Saturday and I will try to make it happen for you!  Stay tuned as well, because the ideas will keep coming and once approved they will be posted!  Why go to Toronto when we have a great club right here in our own city!

The Fun Time Travel Company - Featured Business.

The Fun Time Travel Company was founded by Charlene Groat in the mid 1970's. She got together a group of her sorority sisters & guided them on an excursion to the Farmer's Market in Kitchener. She had so much fun she made a business out of it. Over time, the business grew & by 1980 the first Fun Bus was born.
For many people, the Fun Bus is their first travel experience. Over the years, the veteran Fun Bus customers mentioned the desire to branch off into other forms of travel. To meet their growing needs, Fun Time Travel Company was established in 1987. This company offers a wide range of travel options: e.g. various day trips & weekend getaways on Fun Bus to more exotic trips anywhere in the world. The Fun Time Travel company is located at: 8 Midtown Drive, Oshawa, ON, L1J 3Z7. The business hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. They are closed Saturdays & Sundays.

Fun Time Travel Company staff are experienced professionals dedicated to serving your every holiday need. Steve Groat (Charlene's son) is a Travel & Tourism graduate from the Toronto School of Business. He has also taught there. Steve would like to tap into the gay & lesbian market. One suggestion would be to take a bus to the annual Gay Pride Parade in Peterborough (middle of September). He has done Gay Pride in New York City & Ottawa.
There is 'gay day" at  Canada's Wonderland in August. He has helped the Aids Committee of Durham Region at their monthly dances. Although they cater to mainly the senior market, Steve would like to reach younger clients. He can save people money on their travel plans >> often cheaper rates than one can find on the Internet. Steve would like to tap into niche markets like gay & lesbians & work with Rainbow Vacations on Church Street in Toronto.
Traveling in Canada is good for the gay traveler. This company has exclusive contracts for bus lines for Casino Niagara (Fridays & Sundays cost is only $15) & Casino Rama (Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays cost is $3).

The Fun Time Travel Company does a lot of day tours for things like theatre (Broadway type live shows), shopping etc.

Charlene Groat will be retiring in June 2009 & Steve will be taking over the business. I highly recommend if you have any travel needs or questions to contact Steve @ 905 576-1357 or toll free @ 1 800-420-6103. Also, check out their website: www.funbuscanada.com

If you know of a gay or gay positive business that could be featured in an upcoming newsletter, please let me know. I can be reached at:

 Community Events Calendar

2008 has come to an end, and we're getting ready for our 2009 signature fundraising events. A Taste for Life will happen on Wednesday, April 29th and the AIDS Walk on Saturday, May 2nd. The planning committees will start working soon to ensure there is enough time for both events to be organized. We are inviting all active volunteers, community partners, and schools to participate with us by joining any of these planning committees.
Meetings are usually once a week (time and day will be set by the committee members but they are usually in the late afternoon or evening) and will start running from the first week of January.
If you are interested in joining the Taste for Life or AIDS Walk committees please contact me as soon as possible.  A few hours of your time will help us raise the money we need to keep offering hour clients a great variety of services.

Got Plant Issues - by Charlie  Got Plant Issues? - by Charlie

As these last two weeks in March have been warm, sunny and mild, I've seen people out raking their lawns and tidying up their gardens. Usually this is an activity that occurs around Easter Time.  So, gardening really does depend on the weather and people's inclination. Because I am now off for a holiday in Mexico, my garden can wait until I get back in early April and maybe even until Easter.

So, after your basic clean up of raking the lawns and picking up litter, it's time to turn your attention to: Spring Pruning:

-pruning shifts the concentration of energy from one part of a plant to another
-cut out anything dead or diseased on trees and shrubs any time of the year
-if you want a branch to grow to the right, find a bud pointing to th
right and cut off whatever is above that point
-make smooth cuts, with sharp tools
-when pruning vines, you start with dead branches and then trim for length or to shape the vine in ways you want it to grow
-clematis is a vine that most people have. Some like to be pruned hard every year, and some just need to be thinned out as they bloom on the old wood. When you purchase these vines they come with pruning instructions
-any of your spring blooming shrubs should not be pruned until after they bloom (forsythia, flowering almond)
-cut out any suckers around lilacs
-don't prune birches, walnuts and maples until later in the season
-if you planted new trees, make sure to trim the top growth to
compensate for any roots that might have been lost in transplanting
- dig up and divide and replant perennials
-deadhead daffodils after flowering
-as soon as soil is workable, dig over the vegetable garden in preparation for spring planting.

AND, if you can purchase trees, shrubs and perennials from your local garden centre, you can also plant them at this time-- the earlier you plant, the sooner they have time to become established.

SOME OF THE SHOWIEST SPRING PLANTS ARE:

BLOODROOT
BRUNNERA
DAPHNE
ERYTHONIUM
HELLEBORES
JAPANESE MAPLES
MAGNOLIAS
MUSCARI
PULMONARIA
SCILLA
SERVICEBERRY
SOLOMON'S SEAL
SPECIES TULIPS

So, those are my tips for April. Just wait until May! In the meantime, if you have any questions about your garden or the plants therein, Just ask !!!

Something to Say... Savanaugh - Something to Say

What a blast Mamma Mia was!   The turn-out and response was phenomenal.  Standing on stage looking out at the fabulous audience made me stop and think about what an incredible community we have built for ourselves here in Oshawa.  Sure we have the usual drama that every gay or straight bar for that matter is going to experience, but we really do separate ourselves from the other typical bars in Southern Ontario.  We really are a community.  I could sense it standing with the other performers on the stage that night.  When push comes to shove, we are there for each other and we can never forget or underestimate the important of that sense of security for many in the community.
We also reach out beyond our immediate community and extend into the broader.  The fact we were able to raise over $1400.00 for the Humane Society speaks volumes.  I was very proud to have so many from the Humane Society present that night to see first hand what our community has to offer.  Not only did it raise a significant amount of money, but it also raised awareness for ourselves.  We are a fun, kind, socially aware and generous part of this city.  Every time we bring the community in, we are slowly breaking down barriers of ignorance.  It is a win/win situation!
As director of Mamma Mia, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest appreciation to all of the performers.  You have no idea the endless amount of evenings they give up for each production.  I'm talking hours upon hours of generosity.  Thank you to everyone involved in the production for making it such a huge success and a final thanks to all of the patrons who were so generous and giving that night.  We are stronger than ever and should be so proud of our place in Durham!

History - Durham Alliance Association Social Club (D.A.A.S.C)

Hi All

I am back with the continuing story about  the Durham Alliance Association Social Club and how it developed into Club 717 as we know today.  Not forgetting that we are still the Durham Alliance Association Social Club, a Non-profit, Incorporated Association with a Constitution to provide an outreach, coming together and activities for the gay and lesbian community.

At this time President, Roy Miles and Secretary, Mike Childerhose, partners at this time ventured out to seek a permanent residence for our association to hold monthly functions with less work for all those involved.  We checked out many facilities around the city with no avail until we found an industrial plaza at 717 Wilson Road South, Unit number 7.  The owner seemed very excited when we showed interest in renting the unit on a monthly basis for our association monthly functions.  We held a board of directors meeting and soon decided that we would make the move to rent this unit and hold our monthly dances at a permanent facility.

We decided to rent this unit on a monthly basis and soon started making renovations.  The only washrooms at this time were the two ladies washrooms and we soon got under construction to build the men's and handicap washrooms.  We got the two men's washroom urinals from Branch 43 Canadian Legion and had donations for the two toilets for the men's and handicap washrooms.  We begged and borrowed for donations to help get everything we needed to meet our necessities.  I can remember John  Dunford jack hammering the concrete floor to install the men's washroom, handicap washroom and also to put in the plumbing for the bar sink.  Not a fun job!  We worked for two months during November and December countless hours building the washrooms, bar (out of barn board) which we had donated, and painting the walls and floor.  We got donations of paint and mixed everything together in a large metal drum and it turned out a light green colour.  This we used on the walls and an industrial paint (darker green) was used on the floor.  Finally we were finished and the club opened for New Year's Eve 1994 heading into the New Year 1995.  Allot of work by allot of dedicated people to open the club that very special New Year's Eve.

Our Treasurer at that time was a very thrifty Treasurer and he only purchased one 40 oz bottle of rye for the New Year's Eve party and I had to go home to bring more rye as we ran out before the party started.  The things we went through!  The evening turned out to be a success and from that evening we went on to be open every Saturday night.  Yes, we were only open one night per week on a Saturday night.  I was the DJ and did this for two years every Saturday night at no charge to the Association, yes I did this for free!  On occasion, I had my friend Jody from Toronto DJ to give me a break.  Each weekend he was DJ I put him up at my place for the weekend and usually had to drive him back to Toronto on the Sunday.

As the years went by we had various people on the board of directors of the Durham Alliance Association Social Club and they went through many changes and ventures as the club went on.  I find it sad that many of the club records, minutes and photo albums went missing and I personally feel that this information should have been kept for future reference for the Association's history and board of directors.  Anyone, with information on their whereabouts would be greatly appreciated as we had asked in the past with no avail.

We have had many people involved with Club 717 over the years, some good and some bad and I won't explain the bad parts, I think we all know.  At the present time, I am currently on the Board again and will work to achieve the betterment of the Club and for the gay and lesbian community.  The present board and volunteers, I feel are doing a great job and working very hard for the members and the gay community to provide a facility and entertainment to please you.  I hope that you have all learned something about the Durham Alliance Association, it's formation, it's building, it's builders and it's progress, and hopefully it's continuation and prosperity.  I only ask that you support the work that the board is doing for its members and community at large.
