Quotes of the Month
"If you're Lucky enough to be Irish, you're Lucky enough."
& "Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit." |

 Greetings!
Well if you haven't guessed it yet, yes my favourite colour is "Green" but I have good excuses for all the green in this addition.
First of all, St. Patrick's Day is coming and being Irish it's mandatory I use green whenever possible, its in my DNA or so my Mom says it is. Secondly it's Mardi Gras month !!! and one of my favorite events. So get ready for an action packed month!!
We have some amazing fund raisers planned that are sure to get you motivated. I must say when Club 717 plans a fund raiser to help someone or a heartfelt cause.... our club really steps up to the plate.
So without further ado.... Enjoy this months news !!!

Presidents Message
Greetings to all Members This is just a quick note this month. I want to thank all of you for supporting the Club. It has been an eventful month and there has been lots going on. In February, we saw the new talent show, Any Once Upon a Time, we had our first, and a successful Super Bowl party, Valentines Day and the Oscar Party which also was a success. ?Thanks to all who participated and made these events work. March has a lot in store as well starting with the, Switch Show where the Drag Queens will perform as boys and the Drag Kings will perform as girls. Then we have The Farra N Hyte fundraiser on March 7th, including lots of raffles and prizes up to and including a LCD HDTV, Mardis Gras (Mama Mia Show), Mardis Gras Party, and then we will be having some out of town visitors at the next couple of shows, ending the month with Heavenly Hytes from Toronto. We are going to start doing a little more in the Club redecorating end of things this month as well. We are trying to improve the Club and make it a better place for everyone to enjoy, and we hope you like the improvements so far and hope you will enjoy what is about to come even more. Just a note to everyone. The Board has decided for everyone's privacy that Cameras are not allowed in the Club, too many people have complained about being posted on facebook and ending up in pictures that they do not want to be in. Only Eydie is allowed to take pictures,so if you would like a photo, ask her and see if she will send it to you. Also the Club has introduced a new rule in keeping with the liquor license, if you leave after 2:00 a.m. there is no re- entry, this means if you want a cigarette you have to be prepared to leave at that time. The license requires that there is no re-entry or admittance after 2:00 a.m. We are enforcing this rule. That's it for me this Month, have a great March and you will be hearing from me soon. Regards And all the Best Danny

Queen Ruby's Report
Hi Everybody: Your Queen Ruby here...
The time really goes by quickly. Although February was a short month there was a lot of entertainment going on... I might be bias but I think club 717 performers did a fabulous job in February. Thanks to all who were in the shows.
The month started with the talent show and we will see them all again on April 3rd. I know it is nerve racking for them but thanks for putting on a great show. The Valentine's weekend was a lot fun. Thanks to Edna for all her help and everybody that helped out with food. Then we jumped into Oscar weekend by Savanaugh. I never expected to have so much fun performing music chosen for me. What a BLAST!!!! And Sunday's Oscar party what can I say but the big screen does help us old girls see so we can admire the dresses... Again thanks for all who helped. Finally the Dumb ass show was three performers who pulled off the theme quite well, job well done.
March is going to be just as busy as the previous month. Benn Over starts off the month March 6th with a real gender switch- come out and see why. Then we jump into Mardi Gras March 13th and 14th. Friday is going to be a production number of Mamma Mia. We are practicing at least twice a week so we can get all the moves. Not the moves we are use to...March 13th will be a fundraiser for the DURHAM HUMANE SOCIETY. The performers will be donating their pay and all tips for this needy cause, so please come out and help raise money for them.. On Saturday it's going to be PARTY PARTY nite!!!!!! Dress up and come win a prize and have some food. Then March 20th Savanaugh will bring some special friends to entertain.
Finally on the 27th, I Ruby will be hosting a show with the special Toronto entertainer ?????????????.
So I hope there is something for everybody to enjoy in March.
Once again I will be at the club on Friday's so cum over slap my TIT's and say Hi....

History of a King - Tommi
Getting to know one of Club 717's favorites: Tommi
I have been performing for 6 years and started performing drag in my last year of High School.
I performed monthly while attending college at Sir Sanford Fleming. While in college, I performed using the name JL Bait.
I performed in a show with Chardonnay, and she asked me to come see her once I was of age. I have been performing at Club 717 ever since. In my first show at the Club, I couldn't think of a name that I wanted to use, so I went with the cologne that I was wearing (Tommy Hilfiger).
Music that I enjoy performing to is generally Top 40 hits, Justin Timberlake, Usher, and anything that I can have a little fun with.
The performers that I look up to are Farra N Hyte and Heaven Lee Hytes. Farra for her stage presence, you can't help but watch her while she's performing, and her quick wit on the microphone. Heaven Lee for her dancing, and also her quick wit on the mic.
Make sure you come for my next show on March 7th where I'm hosting a Special Fundraiser for Farra N Hyte. Its an event you don't want to miss.
See ya,
Tommi |

| Out in Durham - by Steve O'Conner
Aids Committee of Durham Region Employee spotlight ~ Mark Hammann
Below is my interview with Mr. Mark Hammann.
1. How did you come about to be hired by the Aids Committee of Durham Region (ACDR)? Mark has been living with AIDS since 1997 and has been positive for over 20 years. He was first a client of the ACDR where he began volunteer work in May 2006. In September 2007 he was hired as the Gay Men's Outreach Worker. His main focus is education & prevention. He enjoys his job & finds it challenging.
2. Past Education/Work Experience & Volunteering: Mark was born in Rhode Island & grew up in North Carolina & Virginia. He was the chairperson of the Blue Ridge Lambda Alliance this organization challenged the likes of the Rev. Jerry Falwell & his anti-gay crusaders. This group worked for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual & queer rights in Central and Southwestern Virginia. It offered support as well as being a political organization & a grass roots program since 1982. Mark's education includes a graphic arts diploma from Danville (Virginia) Community College. He worked for 16 years as a graphic artist in the printing field. He owned & operated his own garden maintenance business in 1993 & had mainly retired clients. Some of his clients thought it was cool to have a gay gardener. Unfortunately Mark took ill in 1997 & being diagnosed with AIDS that year he became more involved in the North Carolina Aids movement. He was a speaker for their World Aids Day in 1998, involved in their Loving Food Resources (food bank for HIV+ people). He was a board member of the Western North Carolina HIV/AIDS Consortium in 1998-99. The consortium oversaw how the Ryan White funds (funds from the USA federal government for HIV/AIDS services) were distributed to agencies in a 17 county area of western North Carolina. The consortiums job was to make certain that the funds were reaching & being used to the best advantage for HIV+ clients.
3. How do you connect with the Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Trans sexual population in Durham Region? Mark's job is really doing outreach to these communities with the main focus being gay men. There will be more online outreach work done this year plus there will be trained volunteers doing outreach as well. Hopefully by the spring or summer 2009 there will be park/street outreach being done. Some information exchange seminars have been held with both gay & lesbians & the service providers. Mark has done joint presentations with PRIDE Durham & would like to work more closely with DAASC / Club 717. Planning with the community seems to indicate that a gay helpline maybe starting soon as well as a community resource, either with or like Pink Pages.
4. How do you reach the hard to serve marginalized potential clients (e.g. Bi sexual men who have sex with men)? Mark replied, the use of online outreach & 2 new websites, dazeindurham.com & acdrmsm.com There is more work to be done in serving male clients & bisexual men plus MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) that do not necessarily identify as gay or bisexual.
5. Describe ACDR's "typical" client mix for your type of work? I do not provide PHA client services, Tiff Idems is our Health Promotion Coordinator and she works with our PHA clients. However, I do know that gay men continue to make up most of our client base and of concern to us is that we are seeing more young gay men. As a satellite site for the John Howard Society I manage the Needle Exchange program here at the agency. I see about 35 needle exchange clients per month. They come from various backgrounds, we do not keep record as to their sexual orientation. Our interest is in harm reduction. We focus on the harm itself rather than on the behaviour(s). We do not insist on or object to abstaining from the behaviour(s), but we acknowledge the active role of the individual in harm reduction.
6. Have you networked with the larger Durham Region community? Mark has found working with the local schools challenging & more works needs to be done there. The ACDR is 1 of 6 Ontario Aids Network agencies in the province that does outreach via the internet. Staff will train volunteers to do this outreach as well.
7. How can DAASC/Club 717 help your clients? Donating food for the food bank is a great help & what was raised at Christmas time was by the Club was fantastic. The ACDR food bank is open weekly for the clients to access food needs & more donations are always welcome. Further, one can become a volunteer at ACDR. All that is needed is an application form, police check, TB test & a short interview. The agency does a good job of matching volunteer with their wishes to help. Also one can make a cash donation & those monies would be used to purchase food vouchers at various grocery stores or to help with medications not provided by other sources. Of course there are other programs & services that ACDR provides & they will be highlighted in a future article. The ACDR continues to expand their office space & their staff size is expected to double during the coming year.
If you know of a gay owned &/or a gay positive business that would like to be interviewed for a future Out in Durham feature article kindly contact me.
Steve O'Connor

Sad Tragedy in Durham Results in over 180 innocent deaths
With all the excitement building over Farra N Hyte's Fundraiser, I want to make sure everyone does not forget about our Fundraiser for the Durham Humane Society. Please save a few bucks to go towards this heartfelt cause. Even if your not an animal lover, you had to feel sadness over the terrible way all those innocent animals died last fall. I still get upset over this.
Queen Ruby will be hosting a Special Event FUNDRAISER on March 13th. It will be a stage presentation of Mama Mia to raise funds for the Durham Humane Society.
In memory of the dogs, cats and other small animals that perished in the tragic fire that took place at the Durham Humane Society Wednesday December 17th, 2008 shortly after 2 am. R.I.P. Fire destroyed the Humane Society building in Oshawa early Wednesday Dec. 17, 2008, killing cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs and many many other small innocent pets.

It was very upsetting researching this as I could have put in pictures of the mind boggling abuse the animals suffered from bad owners prior to the fire. The pictures were sickening, I can't imagine why someone would torture, and I do mean that in the true sense of the word, an animal. Sadly, the Humane Society rescued them only to have them burnt and suffocated to death. Imagine the pain of that type of death.......
It seems even in salvation they still suffered their final torture. Small souls that never got to feel love in a real home. I was unable to bring myself to put those terrible pictures in the newsletter. I'm hoping the warm loving pictures below will have a more positive impact and you will donate what you can.

Let's help Queen Ruby raise funds to rebuild the Durham Humane Society. A new modern facility that will help homeless and abused animals find a loving home. Also to ensure that this tragic event cannot happen again. The new facility will have sprinklers, something that would have saved hundreds of lives in the old facility.
I hope to see you on March 13th and let's make this a true success not only for Queen Ruby but for all of Durham Region as well. If you can't make it for some reason, see myself (ED) or use the Pay Pal link below and I will accept your donation and present it for you on the 13th.
Thank you,
Ed

Volunteer Opportunities Available

Dear Potential Volunteer, 2008 has come to an end and we're getting ready for our 2009 signature fundraising events. A Taste for Life will happen on Wednesday, April 29th and the AIDS Walk on Saturday, May 2nd. The planning committees will start working soon to ensure there is enough time for both events to be organized. We are inviting all active volunteers, community partners, and schools to participate with us by joining any of these planning committees. Meetings are usually once a week (time and day will be set by the committee members but they are usually in the late afternoon or evening) and will start running from the first week of January. If you are interested in joining the Taste for Life or AIDS Walk committees please contact me as soon as possible. A few hours of your time will help us raise the money we need to keep offering hour clients a great variety of services. Got Plant Issues - by Charlie
MARCH IS A GREAT MONTH TO START SEED SOWING, IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY, PLAN YOUR GARDEN AND TO PLAN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN THE GARDEN. THE STORES ARE FULL OF SEEDS AND ALL THE NECESSITIES YOU NEED TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. MOST PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE GROWING AT HOME BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE THE LIGHT. BUT IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE SOME SUNNY WINDOWS OR A FLORESCENT LIGHT UNIT, YOU COULD GROW PLANTS FROM SEED. DIRECTIONS FOR SEED SOWING ARE ON EVERY PACKET OF SEEDS. THE BIG TRICK IS NOT TO OVER WATER AND TO PROVIDE LOTS OF LIGHT. BECAUSE OF OUR COLD WINTER DAYS, THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO RESEARCH AND PLAN WHAT YOU WANT IN YOUR GARDEN THIS YEAR. DO YOU WANT ROSES, A HERB GARDEN, A WATER FEATURE, A DECK, SOME FLOWERS AND SHRUBS THAT ATTRACT BIRDS OR BUTTERFLIES. A REALLY GOOD SOURCE OF PLANT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE IN THE SHERIDAN GARDEN CATALOGUE. IT LISTS TREES, SHRUBS, PERENNIALS, VINES, ROSES, TELLING YOU THEIR REQUIREMENTS FOR LIGHT , WATER, THEIR HARDINESS, THEIR ULTIMATE SIZE THAT THEY WILL GROW AND MOST OF THE SELECTIONS HAVE COLOUR PICTURES. SO THIS IS LIKE A GARDEN ENCYCLOPEDIA, WITH PLANTS THAT ARE HARDY IN OUR ONTARIO GARDENS. AND FOR ANY ONE PLANNING TO CONSTRUCT ANYTHING IN THEIR GARDEN, FROM PATIOS, DECKS, GAZEBOS, WALKWAYS, PONDS OR WHATEVER , ALL THE BUILD IT STORES HAVE BOOKS WITH PLANS ON HOW TO DO IT, PLUS STAFF THAT WILL HELP OUT WITH INFO.
SO.... TIL NEXT TIME, WHEN WE CAN REALLY GET OUT TO THE GARDEN TO DO SOME STUFF...
CHARLIE

March Horoscopes - by Lawrence
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
While you feel the need to regenerate, recuperate, and hide out for a while, you're somehow forced to deal with groups and be more public than you'd prefer to be this month. The full Moon of March10 highlights a health issue while the new Moon of March 26 in your sign makes this a time of important new beginnings.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
Matters of career and your overall direction in life are taking precedence right now and the Sun in your sector of groups offers you many possibilities to network and make important new contacts. On March 10 a full Moon gives some pep to your love life and on March 26 a new Moon asks that you consider your spiritual life more seriously. GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
This is an adventurous and exciting time for you as you go about learning, exploring, traveling, and philosophizing about your life and what it all means. The full Moon of March 10 marks a time of completion regarding a home issue, while the new Moon of March 26 brings a lot of new people and perhaps some organizational involvement into your life.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
This is a heavy month where you find yourself going to extremes-much of the time it feels like you have to trudge through the muck but you come out all the stronger as a result. On March 10 a full Moon brings about a communications project of some sort while the new Moon of the 26th gives you a chance to head in a new direction with regard to your career. Something to Say...
What a month it has been! Rehearsals, rehearsals, planning, planning and more planning. I would like to express my most sincere thanks and appreciation to all of those involved in making two of my events this month a success.
Firstly, our production of "Any Once Upon A Time." This project has been dear to my heart for a long time from its conception a year and a half ago to getting it on stage this past month. All of the performers gave relentless hours for rehearsals and took a major chance in putting this show together for you. It was out of most of our comfort zone and definitely something unique for the club. I would like to personally thank all of the performers, and behind the scenes people for giving me the creative freedom and in trusting in me. I was extremely pleased with the performance. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who came out to support the play. The response was overwhelmingly positive.
Secondly, our first annual Oscar show and party. The Friday show themed on movie music was a smash - thanks to Ruby and Benn Dover for rehearsing and showing such professionalism. I worked both of them very hard! Thanks to John for organizing the food for Sunday's party and a special thanks to Rob and Movie Experts for donating the posters and prizes. The weekend was a huge success and I look forward to putting together a bigger and better Oscar party for next year.
Well no rest for the wicked.... Hmmmm.... "wicked" - I'm feeling another play coming on! There ya have it....

History - Durham Alliance Association Social Club (D.A.A.S.C)
Hi All Well, I am finally back with the continuing story of the Durham Alliance Association Social Club. Sorry for the delay but my father passed away on November 1st and I was very busy with his affairs. I then went on two weeks' vacation to the Dominican Republic (needed the break) and on the return it was Christmas decorating, shopping, family and New Year's. The New Year started off very busy and I am now in a position to continue the story. In my last publication I mentioned there were ten founding members when in fact there were twelve. I have since corrected that at the Club and had the other two members names added as founders and assured the two members that it was an oversight on my part. After getting our financial situation back on track we continued with business as usual and our monthly meetings and dances. This went on for a number of years and we even started participating in the Pride Day celebrations in Toronto. I remember the first year we had a booth set-up in Cawthra Park behind the 519 Church Street as Pride then was not as big as today and wouldn't you know it we had a light rain that day. That was ok because we came prepared with wood and plastic to make a cover to keep the rain off! In coming years we had a table on Church Street and would put a schedule together for volunteers to work no more than an hour shift on the table to promote our Association and dances. One year we had a Jimmy vehicle as our float provided by Larry Verrall who went as our King and Cathy Crawford as our Queen (before the Drag days) and a large contingent of followers behind us in the parade. I can't remember what year it was but a certain group of our membership wanted to hold a dance to invite their straight friends, family, etc. Don't forget that in those days not everyone was out with their family, work or whatever, this was Oshawa a blue collar town. We had to do allot of convincing to get certain people to start attending dances reassuring them that it was for gays only! The board gave in and we held a dance for other than gay members and gay friends and needless to say it was a failure and we lost money. Many gay members did not attend the dance and we decided this wasn't for the Durham Alliance Association Social Club. This is my opinion and my opinion only; back then why weren't the members happy to have one night a month out with their gay friends since they could see their straight friends and family for the rest of the month. I could never figure that one out, believe me! At the next Annual General Membership meeting this group of members wanted to have a referendum to change our "gay only" policy and it lost by one vote. The following year at Pride in Toronto only five of the "old boys" carried the banner and marched in the parade to represent the Durham Alliance Association. All the enthusiasm from the previous year was gone and they boycotted marching and stood in the crowd just watching. Because of our policy these members pulled away and formed the now defunct "Proud And Out" and held dances for a number of years at the Masonic Temple before it was taken over by the Aids Committee of Durham. We got the reputation of being the "Old Boys Club" but believe me if it wasn't for us old boys there may not be a gay club here in Oshawa. It always seemed funny to me that nobody from the private sector ever opened a gay bar in Oshawa when other smaller towns in Ontario have had them over the years. In 1988 my then partner use to have lunch on occasion at the Baron's Landing in the Bond Towers downtown. He noticed that they had a nice bar and spoke to the female bartender that we had a group of guys that like to get together on a Friday night for drinks and would it be alright if we came there. The bar agreed but it didn't take them long to figure out what we were all about. This went on for some time every Friday night. As time went on the clientele, I guess, figured out what was happening and business was dropping. The owner was approached and low and behold he decided to turn it into a gay bar, Oshawa's first! WOW! This went on until the summer of 1990 when a bomb was set off in the men's washroom but fortunately nobody was injured or killed. Seems like the owner was putting all the profits up his nose and had some enemies, nothing to do with it being a gay bar. The owner then directed us to a friend of his that owned the Big Orange on Simcoe Street North. We held a few functions there where I was the DJ on a couple of occasions. It wasn't until I read in the paper that this owner went to jail for 15 years for drug trafficking that we decided to pull out of there. What do we do now? As time went on two of our female board members got involved with a Karaoke Bar in Whitby and wanted us to check it out. Some of the board members went and were not impressed neither by the bar nor the clientele but the two board members pursued it and started working with Lorna, the owner, and her husband. The bar was eventually completely renovated and turned into a gay bar and thus "The Bar" was born. Later on it became known as Diva's. Lorna was very persistent and tried very hard to have DAASC move all our functions to "The Bar" but we were very hesitant about doing this. In 1994 the board of directors decided it was time to have our own place rather than running monthly dances and all the work involved for just one night. Everyone was getting tired and we thought it would be nice to have a place where we could just shut the lights off after the dance instead of having to take everything down, clean-up and all the work. It also made for a very late night for those working. Stay tuned next month, folks, for the continuing story of the Durham Alliance Association Social Club and the opening of Club 717.
