New Year Prayer for the Elderly:

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
The good fortune to run into the ones that I do,

New Year's Day Prayer for one and all
Dear Lord
So far this year I've done well.
I haven't gossiped, I haven't lost my temper, I haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I'm very thankful for that.  But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed, and from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help. Amen

Newsletter Editor - Ed Greetings!

Wow!!! It was incredible to see the out pouring of support and all the contributions our Club made over this past holiday season. You really should be proud of yourselves.

To see all the gifts of food, toys and money that was given to people in need in our community was truly amazing. Our club has so much to offer each other and the community around us. Maybe we can extend this spirit of giving even more? I'm proposing on the 1st Friday of each month we all bring a food item to the club. This way, we can provide much needed food through out the year. Let me know if your interested and I'll present our idea to the board.

With a New Year comes a new sense of growth for our newsletter. Please consider contributing to its content. Do you have an idea or inspiration to write a column? I'd love to hear from you. As you know without your feedback growth is impossible. Please don't hesitate to offer your ideas and constructive criticism so that our newsletter continues to grow.

To all my fellow friends and readers, may you have an amazing 2009 !!!

Happy New Year to one and all !!!

Here we go again, my gosh it seems I just get an article finished and it is time to do another one.

I can start with telling you, what an amazing December we had, there was so much to do and so much going on, it was hard to keep up with it all, and I was exceptionally busy having to buy things for the show on the 19th. Thank God I only do this as a gag and only once or twice per year. I can certainly tell you it is not cheap in any way to put on a simple number or two in a show. I never realized how much expense is involved in buying all the things you need for 5 minutes or so on a stage.

The shows in December were entertaining and a lot of fun, The first Kick off show on the 5th was a build up to the show on the 19th, this is where several performers and a couple of Board Members came out to put on a different show for our patrons.

Through out the month of December the Board Members, Staff and Performers donated Baskets to be drawn on December 19th. These were and are a way of saying Thank You to those who donate a gift to the Food and Toy drive or who purchased tickets from Ruby. A super special Thank You goes out to all of you who donated these baskets. They were very much appreciated and the Club is indebted to you for your valuable contributions. I was impressed with all the 16 baskets that were donated and am sure the 16 winners appreciate the gift baskets they received.

This year we did something a little different then we usually do when it comes to how we pay out the funds raised. There were three levels this year.

The toys donated were taken to the Durham Regional Police Toy drive. Thank you to all the wonderful patrons who brought in unwrapped gifts to take to the Police. You helped some less fortunate child have a better Christmas and that is what the season is all about. The second part was that the performers were donating the show fees and the money from the ticket sales to the Durham Aids Committee the Board of Directors agreed to have Club 717 match what ever money was raised. The money is to be used to purchase gift certificates from a local grocery store to be taken to the aids committee. This helps the people in Durham who use this service and require assistance to get groceries once in a while. We need to be generous and assist our own community where we can in any way possible. A full box of groceries was donated as well we raised over $400.00 to be used for food vouchers. The third part was that the performers were donating any tips raised to the Kelly Family Children. They are three small Children who survived this horrific crime. A seven year old who was celebrating his birthday when this tragic situation unfolded and an older Brother who is 13 as well. One of the murdered victims had a half brother who was under the Kelly families care, they had been appointed as his legal guardians. These three children witnessed the murder of their mother, father, a sibling and a relative who perpetrated the incident. I can not fathom the therapy these children will have to undergo, imagine having something like this on your birthday.  Back to the point, the performers donated their tips to a trust fund for these children and the Club agreed to match the donations. The performers raised $332.00 and the Club matched it for a total of $664.00, to be deposited into the Kelly family trust fund. When you consider all the layoffs and job situations going on in Durham right now, I have to say donating over $1,000.00 in total was awesome. For this, we as a community deserve a round of thanks.  I want to thank everyone who participated and made the night and the month as successful as it was. For those of you who donated baskets, show fees, tips, food, toys and to those who also came out, supported the event and helped to promote it in anyway, I extend my heartfelt Thank You..

They say what goes around comes around and one good deed brings about another. I think the reward for me is knowing in some small way we made a difference and brightened someone else's day. After going through any sort of a difficulty, it just helps knowing there are people out there who care.

January is building up to be an eventful month and there are going to be a couple of new ideas being launched this month.

The Board of Directors have been trying to save money so we can go to the next level of renovations. We want to do something to the second part of the entrance, located just outside the women's washrooms. Also we want to try and enhance the dance floor with more lighting and possibly adding another tower to suspend the lights. We also want to update and improve on the sound equipment. We have decided to play it safe and raise the money then spend a bit and replenish it before completing all renovations. It will be a work in progress but the end result should make you all happy to come to the Club.

I am not going to ramble on any longer; I would like to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year for 2009, and please continue supporting us through your patronage.
.
Lastly, we do love having you at the Club and want to continue seeing you there. Please drink responsibly and use a designated driver service to get you home. You can ask the person at the door which services are available. The cost of a couple of drinks will get you home safely and will not risk your life, another's life, your license and several other things that could happen as a result of drinking and driving.

We want to continue seeing you and we want you to have a good time, but please do not make us have to have a bad time by not being responsible lets all play safely.

Regards
And all the Best
Danny

HI,

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE........

I just wanted to say a huge Thank You to everyone who has given their time and patronage to make Club 717's Christmas and New Year's bash such a great success.

A big thanks to the new performers in the December 19th show: Kristy Kream, Cotton Candy, Fanny and the one and only Miss Swan.  All of you made the show such a great success.

We look forward to seeing some new talent in our February 2nd "New Talent Show". For more details on how to join ask for Queen Ruby or myself.

BEST WISHES FOR 2009

Queen Ruby's Report Queen Ruby

Hello Everybody,

Hope everybody had a great Christmas!!!! I know I did.  If you did not make it to the Xmas show, I just want to tell you how it turned out.

Thanks to all the performers (Madge, Edna, Lauren, Ben Dover, and our 4 special guests Kristy Kream, Cotton Candy, Miss Swan and Fanny).  We had a great time performing and moneys were raised for the Durham Aides Committee (from the performers pay and baskets donated by performers, board and staff members). The money for the Kelly family came from the performers tips raised that night as well. Club 717 matched all moneys raised as well to help out such a worthy cause in our community.  The toys were delivered to the Durham police on Monday before Xmas thanks to Madge and Edna (your help was greatly appreciated).  Once again I would like to thank all that helped out to make the night such a fabulous success.

Now it is that time of year to start making those New Years resolutions.  Myself, I always need to trim down so maybe I can get back to the Gym and stop the elbow from bending too much.  What ever your resolution is I hope it is a success.

January 2 is Ruby's New Year's kick off; the 9th is Savanaugh; Tommie is on the 16th with Farra N Hyte; and Madge on the 23rd.  We are planning to have a big production on January 30th and 31st.  Don't miss it come one, come all.  On February 6, we are planning a new talent night so calling all drag queens and kings to put on the wigs and try out life on the stage. It does get the blood surging.  We are allowing all new comers and anybody that has performed once at the club.  We need new performers to step up and help us old performers get a little rest (right Edna).  Any help I can give, talk with me at the club, I'll be there every Friday.
I think I have been babbling on long enough.  So I wish everybody a Happy New Years Eve and Prosperous 2009.

So come on over on Fridays "Slap my Boobs" and say Hi!!!!
Queen Ruby

Dear Members of the LGBT Community:

Re: Participants Wanted

I am a researcher from UOIT who is conducting research on anti-LGBT hate crimes.

I am currently conducting Focus Groups (informal group discussions) with members of the LGBT community to discuss the impact that hate crimes have on the LGBT community as a whole.

The results of this research will be used to investigate the extent to which anti-LGBT hate crimes impact the LGBT community and how the LGBT community can best respond when these incidents do occur.

The Focus Groups will be held in various locations convenient to you throughout Durham Region.

Participants will be provided with a $10 gift certificate as a token of our appreciation for participating.

If you would like to participate, please contact me at james.bell@uoit.ca and I will let you know when and where the Focus Groups will be held.

Dear Potential Volunteer,

2008 has come to an end and we're getting ready for our 2009 signature fundraising events. A Taste for Life will happen on Wednesday, April 29th and the AIDS Walk on Saturday, May 2nd. The planning committees will start working soon to ensure there is enough time for both events to be organized. We are inviting all active volunteers, community partners, and schools to participate with us by joining any of these planning committees.
Meetings are usually once a week (time and day will be set by the committee members but they are usually in the late afternoon or evening) and will start running from the first week of January.
If you are interested in joining the Taste for Life or AIDS Walk committees please contact me as soon as possible.  A few hours of your time will help us raise the money we need to keep offering hour clients a great variety of services.

Take Action Against Hate Crimes in Our CommunityMark Hammann - Gay Men's Outreach worker
As most everyone knows by now, two of our fellow community members were attacked while picking up their children at school simply because they are a lesbian couple.  This attack is not an isolated event here in Durham.  Many attacks go unreported or they are reported to local law enforcement and not taken seriously or worse the victims of these crimes are made to feel as if somehow it was their own fault.

The after effects of a hate crime can be devastating.  Hate crimes based on sexual orientation have more severe psychological effects on their victims than other types of crimes.  As reported by the American Psychiatric Association, a four year study from the 1990's showed that gay men and lesbian survivors of hate crimes had more signs of psychological distress, including depression, stress, and anger, than gay men and lesbian survivors of comparable nonbiased crimes during the same period.   Psychological difficulties like depression and stress are known to lead to other physical ailments.   Hate crime certainly doesn't help the health of individuals or of our community.

Sadly, the Crown has decided not to prosecute the November 3rd attack as a hate crime.  However, our community has been mobilized together by this painful situation and is taking action against future hate crimes.  There are two actions that are taking shape in the community.  One is PFLAG Canada is organizing a 'Communities Involved Committee' that will discuss the issues of hate crimes.  Durham Regional Police services will be a part of that committee.  The hopes of this committee are for a better understanding, assistance and more compassion for victims of these crimes when they occur in Durham.

Secondly, James Bell, a student at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is facilitating several focus groups, as well as a survey.  The purpose of this research is to explore how hate crimes impact the LGBT community as whole.  One of those focus groups will be held here at the AIDS Committee of Durham Region's office on Thursday January 22nd from 3 - 5PM.  Anyone who has anything to share on their knowledge or personal experiences of LGBTQ hate crimes in the community are encouraged to attend.  As a token of appreciation, participants will be given a $10 gift certificate for their participation in the Focus Group.  Space is limited, so you need to RSVP as soon as possible.

Treasurers Report Treasurer - John
Hi All

I am pleased to report that our Club has once again assisted the community. Even during this economic downturn, we managed to both donate food items and raise funds. During the month of December, we had a food and toy drive, and also a fund raiser to assist the tragedy involving the Kelly family. The December 19th Christmas Drag Show raised $332.00 which was matched by the club, therefore a total of $664.00 was donated to the Kelly family trust fund. A further $417.00 was raised in monetary food donations for the Durham Aids Committee. Along with these monetary donations, a large volume of non-perishable food items was also given to the Durham Aids Food Bank. A large variety of toys were also donated to the Durham Regional Police Association. We can certainly be proud of ourselves with these donations to our local community. I hope each of you has had a Happy Holiday season, and that you have a great New Year. We will have a number of fund raisers, and I know we will rally together to make each one another success for our Club and the community.

Cheers

ARIES (March 21-April 19)
Career matters are on the back burner, the front-burner, and everywhere in between this month. A full Moon on January 9 highlights a domestic issue or a family event, while a solar eclipse (aka new Moon) happens in your 11th house on January 26. Translated, this means that the coming 6-9 months will bring about profound changes in the areas of groups, friends, and organizations.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
You are putting a lot of time and energy into either a legal matter or your educational life. Travel may be playing some role here, and a full Moon on the 9th reveals a community issue or an event that may involve one or more siblings. A solar eclipse (aka new Moon) on the 26th brings about some major changes in your career over the next 6-9 months.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
Your head is in a deep, dark place these days as you struggle to unravel the mysteries of life at its deepest levels. A full Moon on January 9 signifies that finances and any assets of yours will be featured in some way. A solar eclipse (aka new Moon) on January 26 starts a chain of events over the next 6-9 months that fundamentally transform your philosophy on life either through travel or education.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)
There is some major activity going on with your significant other at this time, and your relationship is transforming in a very big way. A full Moon on January 9 happens in your sign and gives you a tremendous amount of drive and energy. A solar eclipse (aka new Moon) on the 26th means that over the next 6-9 months there will be some major new activity for you around the issues of credit, loans, taxes, and sexuality.

LEO (July 23-August 22)
There is a huge issue at this time regarding practical day-to-day matters like your day job and your overall health. The full Moon of January 9 unearths some deeply buried concepts, ideas, or memories that were operating below the surface until now. On January 26 a solar eclipse (aka new Moon) indicates that your relationship life and/or significant other is in for some exciting new changes over the next 6-9 months.

VIRGO (August 23-September 22)
There is a strong likelihood that matters of sex, romance, creativity and possibly children are at the forefront. A full Moon on January 9 sheds some light on who your true friends are and clears up any confusion you may have had regarding an organizational involvement. The solar eclipse (aka new Moon) of the 26th brings about some significant developments over the next 6-9 months with regard to your health, your job, and possibly even a pet.

LIBRA (September 23-October 22)
Your home life is where your focus is currently at, and there may even be some issues popping up around family, particularly matters from the past. A full Moon on January 9 marks a time of completion or fulfillment with regard to a career matter, and a solar eclipse (aka new Moon) on January 26 sets your creative and romantic lives in an exciting new direction over the next 6-9 months.

SCORPIO (October 23-November 21)
Your responsibilities currently reside within your community in some way-and a matter with one or more siblings is taking up much of your time and energy. The full Moon of January 9 raises your consciousness in some way with regard to travel, education, or your general world outlook. On January 26 a solar eclipse (aka new Moon) brings about some exciting new changes over the next 6-9 months with regard to your home and family life.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22-December 21)
Practical matters are at the forefront since you sense the need to take stock of your finances and assets. A full Moon on January 9 is going to bring to light some matter regarding borrowed monies, taxes, or a significant sexual issue. The solar eclipse (aka new Moon) of January 26 brings about some significant changes over the next 6-9 months regarding your sense of community, an issue with one or more siblings, and a communications project.

CAPRICORN (December 22-January 19)
You would do well to place a high degree of focus on yourself at this time-and this includes everything from your appearance to the way in which your immediate environment is arranged. A full Moon on the 9th indicates that your significant other will be emphasized or your relationship life in general if you're single. The solar eclipse (aka new Moon) on January 26 causes quite a stir in your interpersonal relationships over the next 6-9 months.

AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18)
This is an unusually spiritual time for you where you may be feeling the need to escape and find some version of paradise since life as it is seems too...ordinary. A full Moon on the 9th highlights an issue at the workplace and also emphasizes your health. A solar eclipse (aka new Moon) on January 26 makes this a life--changing year for you, especially if you were born within a few days of this date.

PISCES (February 19-March 20)
You feel like you must sacrifice your individual needs for those of the group-and that is precisely what you'll be doing a lot of this month. The full Moon of January 9 emphasizes your romantic life and also gives you a creative streak. The solar eclipse (aka new Moon) of January 26 brings about some significant developments over the next 6-9 months that transform your spiritual reserves and whatever spiritual practice you engage in.

All calm, quiet, reflective and if you did it right - debt free!   Immediately following New Year arrives one of my favourite times of the year.  That's right... believe it or not...the month of January!  The rush is over, cluttered Christmas decorations neatly packed away and now it is time to breathe!

We make such a big deal of Christmas and then again New Years with tons of food, alcohol, visits, parties, gifts and did I already say food and alcohol?  Tis the season for over-indulgence.  Lets face it, we eat too much, we drink too much and we spend too much!  So as we've wrapped up yet another season of insanity, I welcome in January!

As the temperature drops and the snow falls, January begs us to take comfort in the little things.  Quiet evenings wrapped in a comforter with the one we love, reading a book by a frosted up window pane, catching an old favourite movie with a bowl of popcorn or enjoying a hearty stew made from the left-overs of Christmas over-indulgence.  January beckons with it simplicity, calm, self-reflection and yes..... time!

So to all of my friends out there.... take some time.  Curl up, hibernate the body, soul and mind.  A peaceful January to all!

There ya have it....
Savanaugh had something to say!
