Issue 3 Volume 1
Newsletter Editor - EdGreetings!

Hello everyone,
Happy November !!

Recently while working at the club, I noticed our bartenders doing something unusual. They were keeping the bottle caps after serving the patrons. Curiously I asked why and was shocked that such a small gesture could make such a big difference. Apparently, they are donating them to a charity group that provides wheel chairs to disabled people. I think this is such a noble cause !!! So if you have any bottle caps at home, bring them in and give them to the bartenders. They're on a mission to make a difference and would appreciate your help. To our bartenders, I commend you for your hard work and dedication to this cause. Great work !!

This month we have lots of information to pass along so I'll let you get right to it without blabbering.

PLEASE NOTE: Click on the pictures and links through out the newsletter. Many people didn't realize this newsletter contains active links

Club 717 President - Danny

November Already.

Wow this year is really flying by; I want to say to so many people, thank you for all the positive feedback we have been receiving with the Club improvements.

The Floors are done, the women's bathrooms are done, the vestibule is done and it looks great in my opinion. Thank You to John and Ed for all your work in getting the project completed, these two guys are awesome and are giving so much of their time.

Thank You to Larry for organizing the tile guy for the floors, and thank you to Ralph, Pat, Charlie and John for all your help getting this work done and completed. Lastly, Thank You Donna for making the new floors look so awesome for the first night when everyone walked through the doors to see them.

We had a Wedding in the Club this past week and it was a well organized event and went off without a hitch. Chad and Kym, all of us at Club 717 wish the two of you the very best for a long and happy life together.

Chardonnay appeared at the wedding and entertained all, Fabulous Job that night and one of my all time favorite performances by Chardonnay.  You were in fine form that night Chardonnay !!

Thank you to Shannon for being the volunteer D.J. and Thanks again to Ed and John for being my floor guys and changing the Club 3 times that day all on a volunteer basis and lastly, Thank You to the awesome Bartender Tim who did the wedding bar by himself and also set up the dessert table. Guys all of you should pat yourselves on the back. You totally showed the other side what we are capable of and thanks to you, Chad and Kym had a perfect day.

There will be more renovations once we save up a bit more money.

The Annual General Meeting was held on October 26th and elections were held for the the new Board of Directors. The results are as follows and this is your new Board in no particular order(Yet). Dan Caudle, Donna McPherson, Jason Allman, Rob James, Tim Beaven, Larry Chapman, Shannon Nesbitt, Mike Childerhose, Kelly Hummell and John Duvall.

Congratulations to you all and best wishes for the next year.

On a sad note Pat Gostlin the Green Party Candidate for Oshawa was tragically killed in a car accident early Sunday morning (Oct. 26), Pat was a friend to many of us at the Club and frequently spent time with many of us. This is a very big loss for our community, as Pat was so in tune with our community and did not judge us but openly accepted us and stood behind our beliefs. I have spent some time with her recently and on occasion over the past few years now, and I have to say this woman touched my heart, and I am a better person for having known her. There are some stories that will be reveled when we have a memorial for Pat in the near future.

I want to express our deepest condolences to Pat's husband George whom many of us know and cherish as well. George believe me when I say we share in your pain and equally mourn the loss of a very dear friend to one and all. I am moved and brought to tears by the outpouring of sympathy and the ongoing tributes that are pouring in.

Now more then ever I can say we all need to take more responsibility when it comes to drinking and driving. Please,  please, please use a drive home service like Arrive Alive, Keys To Us, D.D. or just a cab. The cost is so minimal and it could save a life, even your own. We have to ensure our patrons get home safely and we have to protect innocent drivers on the road from impaired drivers. In memory of  Pat please put aside the money for the last few drinks for a ride with a sober driver. We want you to keep coming back. And alive!!!!

If you are on facebook, you can go to the groups section and read the comments about Pat Gostlin, a woman I am proud to have known, Pat I miss you, I love you and I will not forget you!!!

Now to lighten it up again. There is a huge list of things coming up and I will leave that for entertainment, but I hope to see people out for the step down shows and the upcoming competition.

Before you know it I will be writing about Christmas. It is only a month away, and I think this years Christmas show will be one you wont want to miss... but that's all I am saying.

Anyway, Once again I have rambled on long enough. You might think I will never run out of information!!!

Take Care everyone and you will hear from me soon

NOVEMBER  REPORT

IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ALMOST A FULL YEAR AS QUEEN HAS COME AND GONE.  FOR ME IT HAS BEEN A VERY FULL YEAR OF SHOWS AND EVENTS. CHRISTMAS, VALENTINES, MARDI  GRAS, PRIDE THROUGH JUNE, THE SWEATY SUMMER  AND NOW HEADING TO HALLOWEEN AND MY  STEPDOWN.

MY FELLOW PERFORMERS HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ALL THE BIG SHOWS: RUBY, EDNA, CHARDONNAY, SAVANAUGH, TWIGGY,TOMMI, BENN DOVER, JACKTUPP, DEWEY HAFTA, SHAWN, LOVELACE, RITA, DIVA from Peterborough, little DIVA DIVINE AND special appearances by DICK HUNT, SAHARA and DOLCE VITA.  AND PLEASE FORGIVE ME IF I HAVE FORGOTTEN ANYONE, AS I AM GETTING OLDER YOU KNOW.  I THANK ALL YOU HOUSE PERFORMERS FOR YOUR TIME, YOUR EFFORTS, YOUR UNIQUE AND QUIRKY TALENTS BUT MOST OF ALL FOR YOUR FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT.  I LOVE YOU GUYS. I EVEN PERFORMED WITH FARREN HEIT AND  ROBIN LOREN. SOMETIMES MY HEAD FEELS LIKE A RADIO, EVEN WHEN I WAKE UP IN THE MORNING THERE IS SOME TUNE BOUNCING AROUND. MY WARDROBE HAS CERTAINLY GROWN, BECAUSE THE WALKING ROOM IN OUR BASEMENT HAS SHRUNK CONSIDERABLY, AS I HAVE MY OWN SECTION.  I HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP TO EDNA, BUT I'M NOT FAR BEHIND.  AND NOW THE WIGS ARE SPILLING UPSTAIRS TO THE SPARE BEDROOM OR SHOULD I SAY DRAG ROOM # TWO. THERE IS A LOT OF BEHIND THE SCENES THAT HAPPENS AT CLUB 717.  THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, THE STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS DO SO MUCH TO MAKE THE CLUB FUNCTION.  THERE ARE BOARD MEETING, STAFF MEETINGS, DRAG MEETINGS, SUPPLY SHOPPING - BEER, LIQUOR AND MISC., CLEANING, DECORATING, PAINTING, FOOD PREP FOR EVENTS, CLEANUP AFTER EVENTS AND MANY OTHER THINGS THAT I CANNOT THINK OF RIGHT NOW. OH------THIS NEWSLETTER-----ED HAS TAKEN ON THE CHORE AND IS THE DRIVE BEHIND THIS , AND ISN'T HE DOING A WONDERFUL JOB!!!!  THIS TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND PREPARATION , NOT TO MENTION THE DEDICATION.  AND NICE LIGHTS TOO!  ED OFTEN DOES THE LIGHTING FOR THE DRAG SHOWS AND OTHER STAFF POSITIONS ALSO.  AND JOHN, HIS PARTNER, PROVIDES A LOT OF THE FOOD FOR OUR VARIOUS EVENTS. PLUS JOHN CLEANS THE CLUB, HELPS OUT WITH REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE  AND A LOT OF OTHER STUFF THAT I DON'T KNOW ABOUT. DANNY OUR PRESIDENT AND JOHN , THE STAFFING DIRECTOR EXTEND THEMSELVES TO MAKE THE CLUB A BETTER PLACE.  DURING PRIDE THEY WERE THERE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE TORONTO PRIDE FLOAT HAPPENED. I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS ABOUT ALL THE STAFF AND BOARD AND MANY OF OUR PATRONS WHO FREQUENT THE CLUB AND OFFER THEIR SERVICES AND TALENTS TOO.  OUR BARTENDERS, OUR FLOOR PERSONS, OUR DOOR PERSONS, AND WONDERFUL DJ'S, AND TO ALL THE PATRONS, I THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF CLUB 717 AND MAKING IT WHAT IT IS TODAY.

AS QUEEN MADGE, 2007-2008, I HAVE HAD AN AMAZING YEAR.  I HAVE MANY MEMORIES WHICH I WILL ALWAYS HOLD DEARLY.  AND NOW AS I MOVE INTO A NEW ROLE, AS QUEEN MUM, I KNOW THAT I CAN COUNT ON ALL OF YOU .  AND NOW IS THE TIME TO OPEN YOUR HEARTS AND SUPPORT THE NEW SOVEREIGN. THAT PERSON ALREADY HAS MY SUPPORT. SO TO RUBY AND BENN DOVER, I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST IN THE COMPETITION. I KNOW THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BLOW OUR SOCKS OFF.  I THINK THE COMPLETION WILL BE TIGHT.  EVEN THOUGH WE CAN ONLY HAVE ONE WINNER, YOU BOTH ARE WINNERS IN MY EYES BECAUSE YOU ARE BOTH TALENTED AND SPECIAL PEOPLE.  AND I WILL BE THERE TO SUPPORT YOU REGARDLESS, AS WILL EVERYONE ELSE AT THE CLUB 717.

YOUR UP AND COMING QUEEN MUM

Entertainment Directors Report
  Entertainment Director - Tim
Hi Everyone

Welcome to a very Royal November here at the club!

This month sees our fabulous Queen Madge step down and become the club's Queen Mom.  I have to say that Madge has done a superb job as Queen and has certainly earned a bit of a break!  As Queen Mom, Madge will be helping the new club sovereign ease into the role and I'm sure providing lot's of valuable advise and tips.  Madge and her team deserve a heck of a pat on the back for getting through the year with such style and grace.

On Saturday 8th November we will be having our New Club Sovereign Pageant.  This years contenders for the crown are Ruby and Ben Dover.  I hope to see everyone there on the night to cheer on their favourite.  The theme for the evening is Viva Las Vegas and I'm looking forward to a very exciting and entertaining evening.  The competition is in three sections, the first is to perform a number in the theme of the evening, the second is to perform a talent number in the theme.  The final segment will be a question and answer style interview.... and the questions are going to be deep and probative!!!!  The competition will have three judges and at the end of the evening we will crown our New Sovereign.

The Royal flavour continues the following week when we stage our Past Queen Show. This is a chance for us all to thank our past queens for the work they did during their reign and for their continued support of the club.  It also gives the past queens an opportunity to welcome the New Sovereign to The Royal Row. (or the rogues gallery as some refer to our Queens portraits!)  This show is always a spectacle so make sure to come out and see all the crowns and gowns in all their glory.

One sad piece of news this month is that Chardonnay has decided to retire from performing. Chardonnay has given so much to the club over the years and has always been ready to step in and help out where ever possible, she has had the run of Valentines over the past few years and has always made it a spectacular night.... there are several couples that got together at one of those parties and are still going strong. Her farewell show on the 21st will see her share the stage with the wonderful Safonda Cox.... now you know thats going to be a show!!..... and just for the record I'm hoping that Miss Chardonnay is "doing" a Cher............ whats she on Farewell Tour Number 7??  I know I for one am going to miss that feisty little Madonna!!

Our months shows end with Lauren Lovelace entertaining with Madge, Edna and Ruby on the 28th.  With three past queens in the show the royal flavour just keeps on coming!

Now that the weather has definitely turned colder we've stowed away the trusty bbq and are now running Pot Luck Dinners every third Sunday of the month...... let me tell you the Thanksgiving Dinner was awesome!!!  The turkey was delicious the desserts were numerous and everyone who attended had a great time.  This month the theme is Italian so whip up a dish and come and join us on Sunday the 16th for some great food and a chance to socialize, chat and even get to make some new friends.

This is my last column as Entertainment Director and I would like to just once again thank everyone who has made my two years in this position so much fun and to wish my successor every success.

Luv'n'hugz

At around 12:30 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, October 26, 2008, Pat Gostlin left us here on this earthly plane of existence, a little emptier inside for her loss. Having left the comfort of her friends to return to the comfort of her family, she was struck and killed by a drunk driver. This tragic loss has robbed us all of someone whom we cared deeply for.
Ever the giver, ever the smile on her face. Wherever Pat went, she always carried with her an abundance of warmth, kindness and humour. Never one to judge, she was always ready with a kind word for anyone and everyone she met.
We are devastated by the loss of Pat, and extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to her family and friends. Pat, you will be sorely missed!

Dear Friends,

I started doing drag at "The Bar" in Whitby.  My 1st live show in front of a crowd was with Ms Demeanor on a Friday night & then Dive DuBarry had me on the Saturday night with her.  So for a full year I was on stage every Friday & Saturday night.  I use to not show my legs or my butt at all.  Though things happened & I did it.  Soon after "The Bar" closed down & came to Club 717 & Ebony and I were friends before then & she got me in shows.  It was a blast!  I soon became the 3rd Queen of Club 717 1999-2000.  My best year ever was when Twiggy became Queen #4.  I will never forget that night that she won, she looked at me & told me with these evil eyes, "Girl you going to work this year & I will make certain of that!"  Her partner Kelly Duff looked at me & just smiled at me.  He then told me that I would be OK.  LOL!  Since then I've been doing shows & it is now been just over 10 years.

There comes a time when enough is enough.  So I've decided to pack up & sell some of my drag outfits. That is correct I am officially retiring from Drag.  My last & final show will be on November 21st, 2008 with Miss Sofonda Cox from Toronto.

Regards,

Chardonnay

NAUGHTY BUT NICE
MONTHLY FEATURE BUSINESS

Kathy Clarke (formerly Crawford & the way some long term members of DAASC/Club 717 will remember her) has been the owner/operator of the Naughty But Nice store in Oshawa since it opened its doors in 1980  >> 28 successful years. This place is the BEST one stop love shop where the pleasure is all yours! It is located in a house @ 206 King St West, Oshawa, L1J 2J5. The phone # is: 905 576-5826. The email address is: nbn@rogers.com  Business Hours are
as follows: Mondays to Fridays 9 a.m  to 9 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. & Sundays 12 noon to 5 p.m. VISA, MasterCard, Interact or cash can be used for your purchases. Besides Kathy there are 3 full time staff members who work at the store. Kathy hires people from the community to work there &
feels she has the best staff in Oshawa. They are all gay positive & friendly people. The biggest sellers at Naughty But Nice are the marital aids. For the men that means masturbation pumps & for women vibrators. Kathy stated that 70% of her sales are marital aids. Other popular items include: lingerie from petite to plus sizes; erotic lotions; X rated novelties; sexy greeting cards; XXX DVDs; vibes to dolls & pumps to plugs. The store pride's itself in having the largest variety & the lowest prices in Durham Region. Depending on the season or time of the year certain items are more popular (e.g. costumes sell well right now because of Halloween). Movies are constant sellers however Kathy noted that good gay x rated porn is hard to get & it is even harder to obtain good lesbian porn. She feels the quality is not there in most movies that are produced for sale. Kathy buys 90% of her items from Canadian wholesalers while the remaining 10 % comes from USA suppliers. Kathy also had a store in Kitchener & 1 in Barrie but has sold these 2 stores. She encouraged DAASC members & their friends/family to come check out the store. She has set up a Face book group under the Naughty But Nice name. There are special prices for all Face Book group members.
There has always been a 10% discount for DAASC/Club 717 members in the Naughty But Nice store. All you have to do to get your discount is show your card. Another reason to become a member of DAASC/Club 717 !! The website for Naughty But Nice will be set up within 10 days (Nov. 6th/08). Go to www.naughtybutnice.ca & check it out. The store's email address is: nbn@rogers.com

One of the nice things about interviewing Kathy for this article was our reminiscing about the past re: DAASC & Club 717. Kathy was an active board of directors member for 7 years. When she 1st started helping out our dances were held at the Valleyview Clubhouse in Oshawa. Kathy served as Vice President of DAASC/Club 717. Also, she helped out with decorating for monthly dances; cleaning; beer runs; obtaining licenses etc. She was on DAASC board for the 1st 2 years that Club 717 was open. Kathy is a very friendly & outgoing person. I encourage our readers to visit her store, Naughty But Nice & check out the various & popular items for sale. Don't forget to show your DAASC/Club 717 membership card in order to get your discount.
NOTE: If you know of a gay or gay positive business that should be featured in an upcoming newsletter kindly contact me at: cottageguy@rogers.com

Thanks!
Until next month...be happy & keep healthy

Final note from the editor:

I'd like to thank all our monthly contributors and sponsors for their commitment to our club and newsletter.

In our October issue, I received feedback from one of our members that I publish a correction notice. This is in response to the article relating to the History of Club 717. The correction is that there was actually 12 founding members present for the set-up/start up not 10.

Have a Great Month !!

Need a Laugh?

 Woman in peril

On a recent transatlantic flight, a plane flies through a severe storm. The turbulence is awful, and things go from bad to worse when one wing is struck by lightning.
One woman in particular loses it big time. Screaming, she jumps up: "I'm too young to die!" She wails.
Then she yells, "Well, if I'm going to die, I want my last minutes on earth to be memorable! Is there ANYONE on this plane who can make me feel like a WOMAN?"
For a moment there is silence. Everyone has forgotten their own peril. They all stared, riveted, at the desperate woman in the front of the plane.
Then an Italian man stands up. He is gorgeous: tall, well built, with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He starts to walk slowly up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt ...one button at a time.
No one moves.
He removes his shirt.
Muscles ripple across his chest.
She gasps.
He whispers ... "Iron this, and get me something to eat ..."
