A note from the President
Well hello again everyone,
Already we are preparing the second issue of the new and improved newsletter. What an overwhelming response we had from the first issue, it was all positive feedback which was great. Ed did an awesome job and spent a lot of time preparing the first edition and he deserves a huge round of applause for his efforts. We have just had another pot luck which went over well. We also have had Farrah N Hyte out to perform and completed another Kinky boots night. The Karaoke is still going slow and we need your feedback, for what you would like us to do for you at Club 717 on Thursdays and Saturday nights, We are a new Board and we are willing to listen and try new things, this is your Club and you have elected us to work for your interests, but we need your feedback. We were thinking of operating some Retro Saturday dance parties but that has not panned out as yet. I would like to have some comedy nights on some Sundays, such as bringing in episodes of Little Britain or some other comedies, now that we have the sound system hooked up to the big screen and TV. We are hoping to proceed with the renovations for the Club in the very near future, such as the club floor and some minor changes to the environment. I cannot say much but it has to do with lights and other minor changes. I am working on this with the Board right now. We are trying to get another Toronto performer out soon and Tim and Charlie are getting into the Competition mode. As you know, it has been a full year that we have served as your Board of Directors already. We hope we have satisfied the majority of you and realize we cannot always accommodate every wish, but we try to keep everyone happy and sometimes that may not make others happy. We just do what we think the majority would like us to do. October will once again be time for the next Annual General Meeting and we will be electing a new Board of Directors, or you will be re-electing some of the existing Board or perhaps even all of the existing Board to serve another term. I cannot speak for everyone but we will see who is willing to stand again soon enough. It has been a bumpy ride during the past year and a half, but the sailing is much smoother now and we have turned around the financial position of the Club. As well, we have managed to re establish some bonds and improve the communication between ourselves and some other community resources for the L,G,B,T. community in Durham. One other thing that we have begun to do is recognize the efforts of the founders and start a recognition system. We would like to thank all the Past Board members and all the past Queens for the efforts they made to Bring the Club to where it is today. Of course the thanks must be extended to all the patrons who have, and who continue to frequent our establishment over the years. It is you who keeps it going and it is you who keeps coming through to support the local G.L.B.T. community. We have had to rely on you over the years and will more then likely have to rely on you again to assist and support issues that may come up, but it keeps us going and enables us to be here for you and other members of the community. For that, I personally give a great big thank you to all of you and applaud all of you as well. Thanks for allowing us to be here for you. We have on a few occasions ventured out of the Club with some little trips and I want to know if anyone would be interested in attending a trip to Casino Rama. We did mention this in the last newsletter, but only one person replied to that thread. I guess a lot of people did not realize all you have to do is click on the underlined e-mail address attached in the area you are looking in, this will link you to the person you need to talk to. The idea for the Casino trip is, we would contract the bus and each person attending would pay $5.00 This will entitle you to participate in some small raffles on the bus on the way up and we will provide some light refreshments as well. We can play a movie while traveling and will be given a lunch coupon upon arrival at the Casino. The bus will return us after 5 hours at the Casino. It is a nice way to spend the day and is a great outing where no one has to drive. If you are interested, please reply to the link that will be attached in this newsletter. Other then that, we as a Board are simply starting to look towards Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, New Years Eve and before you know it, Mardis Gras will be upon us again. Take care and you will hear from me soon. My Warmest Regards, To you all Dan Caudle President president@club717.ca |

A message from our Queen
OCTOBER REPORT
AFTER RECEIVING EMAILS FROM A FEW BOARD MEMBERS ABOUT OCTOBER EVENTS, I THOUGHT I HAD BETTER BITE THE BULLET AND GET TO IT!!!!!
SO I HAVE DONE THE EVENT SCHEDULE FROM OCTOBER , GOING INTO NOVEMBER, AS THE FIRST SHOW IN NOVEMBER IS QUEEN MADGE'S STEP DOWM SHOW. CAN YOU BELIEVE ANOTHER YEAR HAS GONE BYE BYE!! AND THE NEXT NIGHT IS THE KING and QUEEN COMPETITION!! I WONDER WHO'S RUNNING???????????????????????????????????????? I'VE PUT OFF RESPONDING TO THESE EMAILS AS WE'VE HAD A DIFFICULT TIME TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO PERFORM AT CLUB 717. EDNA'S SHOW ON THE 24TH IS STILL UP IN THE AIR, AS SHE WAITS FOR SOME REPLIES. ANYWAYS, IT IS THURSDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 25th, AND I AM NOW PREPARED TO HOST THE KING SHOW, TOMORROW NIGHT WITH BILLIE AND THE KINGS. SO I HAVE SHAVED WHAT I NEEDED TO, GOT TOGETHER MY CLOTHES, WIGS , JEWELLERY, SHOES AND CROWN. SO WHEN I GET HOME TOMORROW FROM MY BIG DAY AT WORK, I NEED TO CLEAN UP, SHAVE, PUT ON NAIL POLISH, GET THE MAKE-UP OUT, TO MAKE MYSELF GLAMOROUS, THEN GET DRESSED, LOAD THE CAR WITH ALL MY PARAPHENALLIA, AND MAKE MY GRAND ENTRANCE AS QUEEN MADGE. I DON'T HAVE TO DO ANY NUMBERS TOMORROW NIGHT. SO I AM HOSTING AS THE MASTER OF CEREMONIES. TIME TO PRACTICE ON THE "MIKE". SOME PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THAT THEY CANNOT HEAR A WORD THAT I SAY. BUT YOU WILL HEAR ME TOMORROW!!! I'M STILL RECOVERING FROM LAST WEEKS "LEATHER AND FEATHER" SHOW, AMONG OTHER THINGS. BEFORE THAT "LEATHER AND FEATHER SHOW", ON THE WEDNESDAY, WE GAVE OUR DOG "RUDY" A DENTA BONE, TO HELP CLEAN HIS TEETH. HE ALSO JUST LOVES THEM. ANYWAY, HE SWALLOWED THAT BONE, AND DIDN'T EAT FOR THREE DAYS. SO ON THE SATURDAY AFTER THAT SHOW, WE BROUGHT HIM INTO SEE OUR VET. THEY PUT HIM ON INTERVENUS FOR FLUIDS AND SENT HIM OFF TO A VET HOSPITAL, WHERE HE STAYED TIL SUNDAY NIGHT. WE TOOK RUDY HOME SUNDAY NIGHT, AND RETURNED TO OUR VET THE NEXT MORNING, BEING MONDAY, WHERE HE STAYED UNTIL 6 PM THAT EVENING. SO---------NOW HE IS AT HOME AND DOING WELL. WE SPENT A BIT OF MONEY, BUT HE'S HEALTHY AND HAPPY NOW. TALK ABOUT STRESSFUL!!!! MORE STRESS FOR RUDY, BUT WE WERE THERE RIGHT ALONG WITH HIM. WHEN YOUR PET IS ILL, IT'S LIKE YOUR WHOLE LIFE GOES FOR A "SHIT". SO ALL IS WELL NOW IN THE EDNA AND MADGE HOUSEHOLD, NOT TO MENTION THE HOUSE OF LARRY AND CHARLIE!!! LARRY AND I JUST CELEBRATED OUR FIRST WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, AS DID DANNY AND JOHN. LAST YEAR WE DID A JOINT WEDDING CEREMONY. SO THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATED WITH ED AND JOHN. THE SIX OF US WENT TO THE 'blue heron" CASINO. THAT'S, DANNY and JOHN, ED and JOHN and LARRY and MYSELF. WE HAD A FABULOUS BUFFET DINNER AND BLEW A FEW BUCKS ON THE SLOTS. AND IT EVEN RAINED!! AND NOBODY WON NOTTTTTTING!!! I AM HAVING MY SECOND GLASS OF WINE AND I THINK I AM STARTING TO RAMBLE. SO I THINK I SHOULD END THIS REPORT. SO YOU HAVE MY MOST CURRENT THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND HAPPENINGS. WHAT MORE CAN I SAY???
TILL NEXT TIME, YOUR QUEEN, MADGE queen@club717.ca |

Entertainment Directors Report

Hi Everybody Fall has arrived and that means Halloween is coming!!! It's time to start thinking about your costume for the Club717 Halloween Party on Sat. November 1st. Details are still being finalized so keep an eye on the club notice boards and the weekly e-mail for all the info. I hope that everyone enjoyed September's entertainment. It was great to see the club so busy every Friday night and to see the great reception that you all gave Farra N Hyte when she came to visit. Kinky Boots was also well attended and I'm sure that the bridal party that joined us had a lot of fun.... and Tequila!.... It was certainly a fab night and we'll definitely be planning another. This month I'm asking our readers to fill in the survey we've compiled. The aim is to find out more about you, our members and patrons, so that we can better tailor the services, facilities and entertainment that we offer you. The survey is completely anonymous, so please take a few minutes and fill it in. October sees the club holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Board of Directors election on October 26th at 2:00 p.m. As I will be stepping down as Entertainment Director, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for giving me a wonderful two years in the hot seat. I have had so much fun and a few sleepless nights- being involved in all the planning of our major weekend events, Christmas and New Years Eve, our Pride entries (not everyone gets to ride a blue peacock in the parade on their very first Pride), our New Queen competitions, Past Queen shows, I've loved every minute of it. It's been challenging, invigorating and very exciting. I've made incredible friends along the way and I treasure the memories that I have of these two years. I want to thank the President and board for their absolute support of everything that we as a club have done in the entertainment field. I also want to thank and pay homage to the fabulous performers who entertain us every week and do soooooooooooooooooooooo much work behind the scenes to keep our club successful. A very special vote of thanks goes to our superb Queen Madge and the awesome Edna..... you guys ROCK!!. Finally the biggest thanks goes out to you, our patrons, you all make Club717 the place to be and the success story that it is. Thank You! I wish my successor the very best for their year of office and I hope that they enjoy things as much as I have. Love'n'hugz Tim
Please feel free to e-mail me at: entertainment@club717.ca with any comments or suggestions you may have regarding the entertainment programme at the club. |

Savanaugh - "History of a Queen"
"Just once Kev, I promise. I'll just enter the competition and do drag for one night!"
Those were my famous last words just before heading on to the stage years ago at Club 717. A new talent competition had been announced and following a few dares, Savanaugh was born. I honestly only intended to do the one night. I remember how petrified I was - I owned one wig, two costumes, one pair of shoes and had borrowed the makeup. Rehearsing my two numbers over and over in the living room as Kev gave that questioning eye - one time eh? The first number was "Orange Coloured Sky" and my second of the night was "All The Good Men Are Gay." I don't recall all of the judges, but remember one very vividly - I was frightened to death of Queen Mary. There she sat, cigarette in one hand, drink in the other. The others had pen and paper ready, but not Queen Mary. She sat there as only Mary could and gave that, "okay girl show me what ya got" look. Petrified as I was, my eyes didn't leave Mary's as she scoped me from head to toe. I won the competition that night to my total surprise. Mary approached me immediately after with a "you fucking bitch" introduction. She critiqued and pressed. I was petrified, I thought she totally hated the performance. She then says, "Okay hot shit, I'm doing a show here next Friday with Robin Lauren from Toronto and you are doing the show with us" There was no room to question - it was matter of fact. Any chance of a one time drag thing was destroyed - thanks to Mary! There ya have it - the birth of another 717 drag queen. After the show with Robin Lauren and performing with the other Queens in Chicago - I was totally hooked. I realized that my long lost days of theater and drama productions had really left its mark. Drag for me became a creative outlet that I had abandoned for years to pursue career and family. Performing means something different for every queen. For me, it really is a forum for creative expression. Whether I'm humping mashed potatoes on stage, humping the American Flag (okay, there might be a humping theme here), performing some tongue-in-cheek number, a classic drag song, making an ice cream sundae on my boobs or doing some fucked-up shit that nobody understands, there is always a purpose.
Savanaugh strives to show that she has something to say! |

Is There Stigma and Discrimination Within Our Own Gay Community? by Mark Hammann - Gay men's outreach worker
In the gay community we are all very familiar with stigma and discrimination. Many of us have felt it from homophobe's, as one example. We may not think of stigma and discrimination as being within the gay community. However, it is and we often don't even realize that our actions may be stigmatizing or discriminatory. The Gay Men's Sexual Health Alliance, is rolling out a new media/website campaign this fall across the province. The campaign deals with the issue of stigma and discrimination between HIV positive and HIV negative gay men around the issue of disclosing HIV status. In our individual efforts at communicating (or lack of communicating) about HIV status, we sometimes say or do things that can be stigmatizing or harmful. It often happens without any realization that we have done so. Our different actions, words and approaches to disclosing HIV status are not limited to just between HIV positive and negative men. There can be, and are, differences within each group as well. This campaign hopes to aid gay men, both positive and negative, in becoming more aware of and learning better ways at negotiating this issue. As well, it is hoped that this campaign will help in reducing the number of new infections among MSM (Men who have Sex with Men). The campaign will promote discussion among Gay/Bi/MSM through its website. Soon you will start seeing advertisements via media around the province, including billboards and all GO Train stations here in Durham. These advertisements will promote the campaign's website. Through the website, guys will be able to learn more about the issues through interactive programs and have an opportunity to participate in online discussions which will occur on selected dates and times. Here at the AIDS Committee of Durham Region we also have started a new website for MSM. Currently this website features a video where two guys confront the issue of HIV status after a sexual encounter. The video should help get folks thinking about how we do (or fail to) talk about HIV status with each other. There is a link under the video for you to share your thoughts about the video or any thoughts, comments you may have about the issue. Selected comments will be shared on the website (no names or identifying information will be posted) over the coming weeks. Also, the site features a short survey. One survey is for HIV negative guys and the other is for HIV positive guys. I encourage you to visit the site to share your comments, thoughts, and take the survey. A link to the provincial campaign will be added in the coming weeks and we'll be adding new features as well, so be sure to check the site from time to time. You can reach the website by going to http://www.aidsdurham.com/prevention_Men.php and clicking on the logo "ACDR - MSM Online". Let's take the time to think about our actions and words and begin communicating better, so we can build a stronger, healthier community for everyone. We all face enough stigma and discrimination without knowingly or unknowingly promoting more of it among ourselves.

Peterborough Pride Report
by Steve O'Connor
Peterborough Pride Parade.
I was very fortunate to attend the 6th Annual Peterborough Pride Parade on Saturday September 13th, 2008. This year theme was "Shine." The mission of Peterborough Pride exits to celebrate the history, courage, diversity & future of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, intersex & two-spirited communities. The mayor of Peterborough wrote a Peterborough Pride Day Proclamation where he asked fellow citizens to observe this day by opening their minds & hearts to diversity & to embracing the differences of all people in the Peterborough community. There was an official kickoff held on the steps of city hall. City council person Patsy welcomed all the walkers & organizers & declared Saturday September 13th as Peterborough Pride Day. The rainbow flag was flying proudly at City Hall. The participants were asked to walk slowly through the downtown core & enjoy our pride walk. There were 20 community based groups with floats, cars or just walkers carrying their group's banner that walked. I was asked by friends to join their group Affirm (gay United church members). There were a lot of gay & lesbian supporters who lined the parade route down George St. (downtown Peterborough). The parade started at 2:10 p.m. > only 10 minutes late which is good for a gay function. The parade was led by 8 dykes on bikes and motorcycle riders with their horns blaring loudly to announce the arrival of the parade. Some of the groups which participated were PFLAG, Ontario Teachers Federation, Rainbow Services Organization, Children's Aid Society. Trent University Queer Collective & CIBC. The parade ended at Millenium Park where a community fair was held. The various groups that marched set up booths & had lots of literature, buttons and ribbons for people to pick up. They were very good to answer any questions that I had about their organization & what they did. Prizes were given out for the best float which was won by the Peterborough Children's Aid Society & best individual costumes won jointly by Kevin (Queen Elizabeth) & Sean (Queen Victoria). Various games were held in the park. Later that evening the Pride Follies & Dance was held at Market Hall in downtown Peterborough. The follies show was excellent with drag queens performers, singers, poets, dancers & comics head lining the show which lasted 1.5 hours. This is the 3rd year in a row I have attended & enjoyed the Peterborough Pride parade & related activities. I will definitely go next year & I would encourage members from our community to attend this annual fun event. Peterborough Pride is always held in September so that students from both Trent University & Sir Sanford Fleming College can attend. Both of these schools have active gay & lesbian groups.

A new Moon gives you the opportunity to "disappear" for a while, whether it be through a vacation or simply locking your front door and turning off your cell phone. The full Moon of the 14th creates a highly romantic time for you. CAPRICORN (December 22-January 19) Your ultimate destiny, your direction in life, and career matters are still at the forefront for you. Over the next month or so the energy shifts to your circle of friends and any organizations you are involved with, and the new Moon on October 14 starts this process. On October 28 a full Moon in your home sector highlights home matters-whatever you've been focusing on with regard to your home life now feels complete. AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18) There has been an emphasis on education and foreign travel, and there might be a legal matter gobbling up some of your time this month. A full Moon on October 14 highlights community issues, communication projects, and possibly an event with regard to a sibling. On October 28 there will be a new Moon in your career sector so use this energy to start that new project, job, or some type of higher training that you've been considering. PISCES (February 19-March 20) You've been forced to look at some areas of life that you'd rather avoid-old skeletons in the closet, money issues, etc. A full Moon on October 14 in your money sector shows you the state of your financial affairs, and also serves to remind you of what really matters in life. On October 28 a new Moon inspires you to plan a trip or possibly begin some new form of education. |

History - Durham Alliance Association Social Club (D.A.A.S.C)
Going back to 1987 and a Halloween Dance held at Valleyview Park Clubhouse by Brian Barber was just the beginning. Brian passed away on August 8, 1995 and a Memorial was held at Club 717 in honour of his memory and dedication to the Durham Alliance Association Social Club. Brian had this great idea that we needed a social outlet for the gay and lesbian community here in Durham and he contacted the other nine people whose names appear on the plaque at Club 717. He decided to have a Thanksgiving Day dinner at his place the first weekend in November with a turkey and all the trimmings and invited the other nine people. Thus the Durham Alliance Association Social Club was formed. We decided in order to make this work we needed an Executive, Board of Directors and job positions for everyone. It didn't take long for people to volunteer and get involved. We approached a gay lawyer in Toronto by the name of Harvey Hamburg and had him draw up papers for us to become incorporated as a non-profit organization with By-Laws, a Constitution and guidelines to follow. We held monthly Executive meetings and Board meetings to discuss the business of the organization and set the theme for the next monthly dance. In those days our dances had themes with decorations and food to fit the occasion. We would get together on the Saturday of the dance and decorate the hall. I would look after setting up all the music equipment, as in those days I was the DJ. At Valleyview we would use both floors, upstairs was the dance area and downstairs was the bar and food. We even tried having dancing on both floors with the DJ and music downstairs on occasion. When this was done I would have to rent extra speakers to operate both floors with the music. It got the point where we purchased extra speaker cables and ran them through the ceiling at Valleyview and left them there for the next dance in order to cut down some of the work on setting up. We held dances ten months of the year, always taking the summer months of July and August off. Depending on availability, we sometimes booked other halls for our dances like Bathe Park Community Centre and Glen Stewart Park. One year we held our New Year's Eve dance at Bathe Park and we spent two days decorating the hall in the theme of Black & White, thus the Black & White Ball was born. I must admit the decorations looked fantastic when we were finished and the attendees that New Year's could not believe their eyes when they entered the hall. We kept this same theme for many years to come and Wayne Maidlow would always bring his home made eggnog for our refreshment while we were decorating. In those days everyone would dress to the nines in tuxedos and fancy party dresses for some of the ladies attending and also tuxedos. The Executive and Board of Directors would always make reservations at a local restaurant and go for dinner before the Black and White Ball got underway. I can now see where that expression "the good old days" comes from! Once we held a weekend garage sale at Valleyview to help raise funds with donations from members and a summer picnic was held for a few years at Cedar Park. As time went on we saw the need for computer technology to help with such things as our membership list, mailings and recording of minutes from our monthly meetings. We went out and purchased a computer for the organization and I spent nine years as Secretary of DAASC. With the assistance of Richard Chan who worked for the Ministry of Revenue here in Oshawa we set up a data base for our membership, mailings, minutes and the financial side of the organization. Richard was a real asset as he organized our financial statements and books when the then Treasurer showed up at a meeting with not statements but two garbage bags full of receipts and no reports. It took him some time to sort this mess out, but with his background in finances the job was completed. To be continued: Stay tuned next month for a further update on the history of the Durham Alliance Association Social Club. Submitted by Mike Childerhose | |
Final note from the editor:

Due to the Political Season that were in......I hope you find the following amusing...
****
A cannibal was walking through the jungle and came upon a restaurant operated by a fellow cannibal. Feeling somewhat hungry, he sat down and looked over the menu...
Broiled Missionary: $10.00
Fried Explorer:
$15.00
Grilled Liberal:
$100
Baked Conservative:
$100
The cannibal called the chef over and asked, "Why such a price difference for the Politicians?" the chef replied, "Have you ever tried to clean one? They're so full of shit, it takes all morning"

Can your favorite colour determine your perfect job?
Do you ever wish finding the perfect job could be as easy as 1, 2, 3? According to new research, it might be as easy as red, yellow or blue. That's right; by determining which primary, secondary and achromatic colours you prefer most and least, you can figure out a successful career path based on how you approach work, the types of workplaces where you work best and how you handle work tasks.
How it works:
First choose your preferred colour (red, yellow or blue). From there, you choose your preferred secondary (green, purple or orange) and achromatic (black, white or brown) colours. Write them down before continuing.
Your preferred colours determine how you attach each task. They indicate your talents -- what you prioritize first in order to be successful. They also highlight what you overdo, especially when you feel great. For example: if you're partial to yellow, your information-driven; blue preference people are idea-driven and people who prefer red are results-driven.
If you favour green as your secondary colour, you realistically evaluate situations; purple indicates you like fact-finding possibilities and orange signals that you scrutinize feasibility. Finally, if black is your choice from the achromatic colours, you consider value above all else; white shows that you like having options and brown confirms that you like implementation and accomplishing tasks.
