September 2008                              Newsletter

Issue 1 Volume 1
Newsletter Editor - EdGreetings!

As you can see we've re-launched our official club newsletter. You may recognize me as the guy that usually helps clean up the empty bottles or runs the fall coat check at the club. Recently, the Board of Directors have chosen to give me a shot at delivering the monthly news.

I'd like to thank the countless people that have given their time, energy and ideas to make this issue a reality. Without you, this could not have been possible. "You know who you are" !!

I look forward to seeing you at the club and wish you a wonderful September !! We've got some great things planned for you !!

A note from the President
Club 717 President - Danny

Hello Everyone,

It has been a very long time since we issued a newsletter. I would like to start with a special Thank You to Ed for taking on the task of preparing a newsletter for the members of Club 717.

Ed and John both are very active members who give a lot of their time to the Club and have been a very important part of the Club's new success.

There are so many people to thank for all they have done and given to Club 717 for the past couple of years, unfortunately I cannot take all the time, and the entire first edition to go over it.

To the current Board, a heart felt "Thank You" for all you do and what you continue to do.

To the past Board, an exceptional "Thank You" for beginning the process of renewal.  Then supporting us through a dark period of time and succeeding at it. Most importantly for addressing the problem with finances and approaching members to set up a financial committee.

To the financial committee, a super huge "Thank You". It is you who have kept the doors open for a community that needs us to be here.

To the Staff, "Thank You" for volunteering all the time that you have given, and keeping the Club alive. It was because of you people especially that we are where we are today.

To the performers, "Thank You" for going through what you go through every week to entertain us. We need to stop and realize the great expense you go through and we appreciate that. You get very little in the way of compensation for all you do, and I personally appreciate all your time and work that you put into the shows.

To the members and patrons, "Thank You" for coming to us when we needed you. It is for you that we do this and because of you that we enjoy what we do.

It has been an eventful year, with a lot of changes. A successful & fun New Years Eve Party, a new ice maker ("Thank You" Whitby Mazda & numerous other donors), new performers, out of town performers and extra events, such as Kinky Boots nights, Drag King shows, Kendall Partington on the Ivories (Which has not happened in a while), and other venues including a trip to Toronto for a boat cruise with Spearhead.

You people support it all, and now we have re-introduced Karaoke on Thursdays. A few people have come out to support this activity, but we could use some more - have any of you heard Jean-Guy sing?

The summer is coming to an end and we have had a busy busy B.B.Q season between members and patrons. And I am trying to diet.......

I have been so thrilled with the pot-luck dinners and Club B.B.Q'S and we just held our first Family B.B.Q. What a success it was and a pleasure to finally meet the children of some of our patrons. That was a great experience!

As most of you know, I had my annual B.B.Q. which was also a way to say Thanks to the Volunteers, Staff and Patrons of the Club. It was a rainy day but all in all it was a successful day and we all weathered the storm, some of us are still soggy but we will overcome it eventually.

We are moving ahead in leaps and bounds and have now added a debit machine to our facility, so we can get cash back or use a visa at the Club if the need arises, rather then having to leave and find a bank machine. I feel Club 717 has a bright future ahead.

It is almost the Annual General Meeting time and with that will be the elections. Now is the time to start gearing up for the elections. It has been a pleasure sitting on the Board of Directors again, and I hope that our efforts have not been in vain. We have strived to carry Club 717 forward and hope the momentum carries on.

My Warmest Regards,
To you all

THE QUEEN'S PRIDE REPORT

On Sunday June 29th, a group of us gathered at Club 717 to load the float with Pride decorations which included; colourful Pride decorations of Adirondack chairs, hoola hoops with Pride coloured twigs, some Pride flags, big colourful umbrellas and the people on the float.

About 3 weeks before the parade, Danny, John, Larry, Jean-Guy and myself met at the club on a few occasions to install a wooden floor on the float, then a raised section at the back for the DJ equipment. We also installed a gazebo on the float for decoration and support. Everything on the float was painted black, so that when we added the colourful decorations, they would POP !!

The theme for the Toronto Pride Parade this year was "United", SO I interpreted "United" to be people in the club who have supported me and who played key roles in the club. SO my fellow floaters who went down Young Street with me were; my spouse, my biggest supporter and drag queen extrordinaire, Edna; Ruby Licious my fellow Fellatio Sister and great supporter, my good friend and supporter Ralph and our DJ Lindsy, who rocked out the tunes in her sexy leather outfit, and Kelly, who works frequently at the club and who's there to help out when needed. Last but not least my good friend Miss Chardonnay, who rode as Jean-Guy and who organized and had the float all decorated with the help of those who arrived before I did that day.

Danny and John arrived a bit later with 7,000 freezies that we threw from the float into the crowd. Some of the walkers handed out Club 717 business cards. Our entourage was led by Ron in a colourful army outfit while waving a Pride flag. Just behind the float was the Aids Committee of Durham, carrying their organizations banner, which to me was all part of the "United" theme. All the groups in Durham & people at the club who live, work and share the work-load, as well as, the good times together were there.

I must say at this point that I would have had everyone at the Club 717 float if that were physically possible. I have had tremendous support and offers of help from many. When it comes time to do the tasks, too many people in the kitchen is not a good thing. But I know that there are many people ready and willing to help out, and I Thank You !!!!!

The parade seemed to be over in no time. We were dancing and laughing and waving to many that we knew and more than many that we didn't know. Water guns are used to dampen the Pride float goers, but our team was able to hit a few people in the head with a freezie now and again. Not that we were vindictive; it's all in fun !!

I am writing this now almost two months after the fact. We need to get this newsletter up and going. My memory sometimes fails me, so if I have forgotten to mention your name, please forgive me. I truly thank everyone at Club 717 for their support. The board, staff, performers and the patrons all made our Pride effort a huge success.

The "Spousal Show" in June was a fundraiser for Pride and our last show in June also added to the money raised for the event. The month of June at Club 717 this year was certainly one of the most Pride orientated events that I have ever seen at the club, and that is because of all the people who patronize the club and make it their home.

So......That's all I have to say, until the next newsletter. But if the there is something you want to know about Club 717 from the Queen's point of view, just ask me in person or write a note to the editor 717editor@gmail.com and I or someone with an answer will fill you in on all the juicy details.

Now your September TIP:

Fall is here and as we all know, September is a busy month for everybody. Back to school and the change of season means new fashion, trends, and fads. Try to get in to your personal stylist every 6-8 weeks. This keeps your hair looking trimmed up and neat. It also keeps you informed on the new fads taking over from colors to styles.

Also remember that a clean shaped brow will help you get noticed.

Keep it glamorous!

CHOCOLATE AMARETTO CHEESECAKE

Ingredients:
Example Only - Chocolate Amaretto Cheesecake
1 1/2 lbs of Cream cheese
3 large eggs
1 cup white sugar
8 oz. chocolate chips
2 tbsp of cocoa powder
2 cups sour cream
5 tbsp of Amaretto liquor

Crust: 2 cups of graham crumbs, 1/4 cup of butter (melted) and 1/4 cup of white sugar
Procedure: In a bowl, mix the graham crumbs, melted butter & sugar together. In a cuisinart, process cream cheese, sugar, cocoa, eggs and Amaretto. Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. Add sour cream and melted chocolate and process until well mixed. Pour into springform with graham cracker crust. Bake at 285 for 45 to 55 min. (convection oven) regular oven at 350 until edges starts to puff up. Insert a sharp knife around the edge of the cake and the pan and go around the cake. Let cool in oven with door semi-open for about 1/2 hour. Let cool on counter till room temperature then refrigerate.

The cake is amazing. It's not a dry cheesecake....It's almost like a mousse cake. Serve with a nice French vanilla ice cream.

P.S. The big mistake that people do when making this cake is over baking it. Remember.... the only thing that needs to cook in this cake is 3 eggs.

Enjoy,
Roger
Edna - "The History of a Queen"
Edna Dubarry

How Edna became a Drag Performer at Club 717

For Halloween 2000, Larry decided to dress for the club 717 Halloween Party as "Dame Edna" and Charlie went as "Elton John". Around that time, because we were relatively new members at the club; we joined New Year's 2000, to get a price reduction on the New Year's Eve Tickets.

So we finally figured out that we like to go see the Drag shows and our frequency at the club picked up. Most of the Drag performers became aware of us hiding out on "Perverts Row", because those are the best seats, giving a good view of the show and letting you melt into the backdrop and not be so noticed. But the Drag performers would talk to us at the bar or from the mic when they were on stage. Twiggy, Miss D, Rita Book, Barb Wire and Ebony were the first queens that we got to know. We did not know for the longest time that Jean-Guy was a Drag performer, until we saw him in the Pride Parade in Toronto on top of a fancy red car. We turned to each other and said that is Mr. Overalls. Because that is what we called him. We only saw him working in the club, but we never saw him perform unit after that Pride.

It was Rita Book, AKA Jeffary Fudge, who took a real interest and kept encouraging us to come see his shows and even invited us to his place for dinner and drinks, which was the start of our friendship. Rita book became Queen of Club 717 for 2001/2002.

Sitting around one afternoon in the backyard having some refreshments with our friends Jeffary, his partner, John and Donna, (who has become a close friend of ours), listening to a "Mrs. Miller CD", Jeffary invited Larry to do a show, lip sinking Mrs. Miller and dressed as Dame Edna Everage.

So that show began with Larry, being the surprise guest and was asked to stay in the drag room until called to the stage - and so began the "Deer in the Headlights" show for Edna.

Shortly after Larry AKA Edna was invited to do a show at Rainbow Ridge Campground and Trailer Park with Miss D., Twiggy, Barbwire, Rita Book and Chardonnay. Edna performed "These boots are made for walking", so the deer in the headlights was told to  - - Keep walking Edna - ha ha ha..

The following week Miss D. and Twiggy were doing a Leather Show at the club and invited Edna into the show, but told her she had to loose the glasses and reinvent herself into the theme.

Everyone wondered who the new performer was. Edna's confidence level went up Big Time.

Two weeks before the King/Queen competition, Edna was persuaded to enter the competition. Mary, Pam (Issac cox) and Donny (CJ Douglas) were the competition. Larry requested help from Charlie to do the competition. Charlie's thought was to dress as, Madge, Dame Edna's side kick, so that he could be on stage and place props and help dress behind the curtain. Mary became our next Queen, and rightly so. There was some confusion as to who the runner up was because of the way it was announced. All the contestants thought they were the runner up.

Charlie, being the entertainment director at the time, persuaded Queen Mary to do a production of "Chicago" for the Mardi Gras Event. So, Queen Mary her partner Richard, Edna & Charlie spent hours at the club preparing for the "Chicago" show and that was when we all bonded and became close friends.

Unfortunately, Queen Mary became very ill. It was on her death bed that she asked Edna to take over her reign. So Edna finished off Mary's Reign for 2002/2003 carrying through the plans that Mary had made. So Edna, as Queen Edna was coronated, and her first queenly function was the Toronto Pride Parade. Through all these events, the performers, board and club members bonded. Now Edna was doing at least one show per month and her skill and entertainment assets were on the rise. Then it was time to plan for another King/Queen competition. Jewels and Savanaugh, relatively new performers, were competing for the title. Jewels was crowned Queen, Edna became Queen Mum. Edna's year as Queen Mum was the most fun and enjoyable. Many more friendships were formed and support from club members have created many happy memories and good times at Club 717. So the Edna you see today, is a result of those times of trial and tribulation. And there may be some who remember these events differently. But as far as I can remember, this is the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and please forgive me if I have faltered !!

Treasurers Insight with Bob
Club Treasurer - Bob
As Treasurer for the Durham Alliance Association Social Club, it is my responsibility to make sure all funds raised through bar sales, admission, membership fees, coat check and fund raising are recorded and safely deposited into the Club's bank account. Also it is my job to report financial statements back to the Executive Board, Board of Directors and to the membership. I am also responsible to ensure all bills and taxes are paid promptly and accurately. My first term as Treasurer has been a learning experience but with the help of my good friend Roy Miles I am enjoying the work and contribution I am making to the club and it's members.

As many of you know, funds went missing from the club's coffers in the past and I can guarantee you that that will never happen while I am associated with the DAASC. At present the club is in very good financial shape even after the slow summer season. The savings account maintained by the club has a balance of $12,632.34 and the current account stands at $4,836.86 as of August 22, 2008. The club operated at a loss during the month of July and I anticipate that it will also lose money in the month of August as well. The main reason for this is the fact that we have been running a Karaoke Night on Thursdays at a cost of $200 per night and the fact that we are paying staff and performers on a permanent basis now. Last summer this was not done, so our expenses are much higher during the summer months while income is lower.

Plans are in the works for 3 major events for 2008-2009. Again New Year's Eve and Mardi Gras will be big fundraising events and new this winter will be "Oscar Night". Plan to join us Sunday, February 22nd to party with the Academy Awards. Lots of food, drink and prizes and there will also be some surprises too!

Until next month, thanks for supporting Club 717

Don't let your guard down.  Know what the risks are and play safer.

By Mark Hammann - Gay Men's Outreach Worker

Here at the AIDS Committee of Durham Region we have seen a substantial increase in new HIV+ clients during this past year.   Many are young gay men.   This is disturbing (especially if it is a trend) as we are now over twenty years into this pandemic.

There are many factors that play into new infections like, mental and emotion issues, economic status, ethnic/cultural issues, substance/alcohol abuse, and condom fatigue, just to name a few.  In the last Ontario Gay Men's Health Survey we discovered that our region has higher levels of risk behavior and substance/alcohol use.   Could this be why we are seeing increasing numbers of those newly infected?

We are not saying to stop having great sex or fun, just be aware.   Plan ahead before partaking in alcohol or other substances.  Know how those substances affect you.  Doing so will help reduce the risks.  If you can't use a condom (for whatever reason), know what the risk factors are and how much risk you are willing to take.  It's your life, so take charge of it.

Living with HIV is better today than it was years ago when I was first infected.  However, life with HIV is still no picnic.   Medication side effects, staying on and following a strict medication routine, multiple doctors visits and paying for medications, not to mention continuing bouts of fatigue, nausea and diarrhea.   There are also the external issues like, stigma and discrimination, lack of intimacy and the isolation it can cause.  All of this is no picnic.  HIV infection is not something to take lightly.  HIV infection remains a serious issue.  Now is not the time to let our guard down.

"We have seen a substantial increase in new HIV+ clients during this past year."

We all need to make a stronger commitment to each other and ourselves.  Playing safe is still important.  We should always carry condoms (and water-based lube!).  As I stated before we should be very aware of what the risk factors are for all sexual activity.   Each of us can then choose what level of risk we are willing to accept if we so choose not to use protection.  We here at the AIDS Committee of Durham Region have condoms and lube to give you free of charge.  We can also help you to better understand the risk factors.  Visit our website www.aidsdurham.com, call   or stop by (22 King Street West Suite 202), we are here to help you protect yourself.

September Hottie

September Quote

Life is too short to wake up with regrets! So love the people who treat you right. Forgive the ones who don't, just because you can.
Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands and don't let go. If it changes your life, let it.
God never said life would be easy, just promised it would be worth it. - unknown

He will be missed by the remaining board members and we thank him for his dedication and attention to detail during his appointment. A job well done !!

Effective immediately and for the remainder of this boards term, Jason Allman will assume the Secretary position.

In addition, John Duvall was invited and accepted the position of assistant to the Secretary and to fill the vacant Membership position until October. John Duvall also assumed the regular cleaning duties at the club.

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT in Durham

Mosquito

If you missed "Clarington This Week" recently you missed an important article.
Apparently a horse died in Durham from "Eastern Equine Encephalitis" yea, I said the same thing. WHAT is that!!

Well in short its deadlier than the West Nile Virus and more common. It's transmitted the same way, by mosquitos!! Keep your bug spray close. I recommend "OFF Skintasktic" you've seen the commercials, goes on dry and not greasy.

One last comment, the average recovery time from the West Nile Virus is 1 year !!

This is the peak time for mosquitos ......

In Pharmacology, all drugs have a generic name: Tylenol is Acetaminophen, Aleve is naproxen, Amoxil is amoxicillin, Advil is ibuprofen, and so on.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra, and announced that it has settled on Mycoxafailin.

Also considered were Mycoxafloppin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Mydixadud, and Alimpdixafixit, and of course, Ibepokin......
